Specie e soggetti

Alpaca (Vicugna pacos), razza Huacaya.

Species and subjects

Alpaca (Vicugna pacos), Huacaya breed. 150 single newborns (no twin births), 25 males and 25 females per group, i.e. sex balance imposed by design and not left to chance.

Housing context, given in full because it is half the result: private herd, community of Iscahuaca (district of Cotaruse, province of Aymaraes, department of Apurímac, Perú), 4,193 m elevation, latitude 14°24′42″. During the study (January-April, birthing season) the average temperature was 18 °C at midday and −3 °C at dawn, wind 3-4 m/s, relative humidity 75-82 %, average annual precipitation 1,088.5 mm. Natural pasture (Festuca dolichopylla, Stipa ichu, Agrostis spp., Calamagrostis spp. and others); by day on pasture with the mothers, by night in the assigned shelter.

The mothers were not weighed, and the authors say why: to avoid stressing them and thereby reducing milk production, and to avoid increasing the risk that they would crush the crias in attempting to avoid human contact. No female died during the study.

Study type and level of evidence

Randomized experimental study with three arms and a control group, completely randomized design, on production animals under field conditions. The OC arm (open corral) is stated by the authors as the control group, «because it is the most common overnight housing method among alpaca breeders in the region»: it is a control of current practice, not a placebo.

Level of evidence: randomized controlled trial on production animals — the highest rung among the designs present in this issue, and the only randomized design in the entire C group. Consequence for the reader: the association between protection strategy and survival is, in this context, causal and not correlational — it is the only claim of this type that the issue contains. What the high level does not guarantee is transferability: the context is high-altitude Andean, and the record repeats it three times because it is the point where the European reader is most exposed to error.

Relevant reporting standard: REFLECT (Reporting guidelines for Randomized Controlled Trials in livestock and food safety), which is the modification of CONSORT for production animals; alternatively ARRIVE 2.0 for the experimental part. Declared by the authors: no — neither is named in the article, either in the abstract or in the full text read on 31/08/2026.

In breve

In brief

In the Peruvian Andes at 4,193 m, with −3 °C at dawn, 150 newborn alpaca crias were assigned at random, immediately after colostrum intake, to three ways of spending the night: open stone corral without shelter (OC, the traditional way, control), the same open corral but wearing a vest (BV), or a three-sided semi-open shed (SH). Fifty crias per group, followed for twelve weeks with mortality recorded every day and weight every seven. Survival at 12 weeks was 100 % in the vest group, 76 % under the shed, 64 % in the open corral; daily growth was 0.17 · 0.14 · 0.13 kg/day in the same order. The shed and the open corral were not found to differ from each other. The sex of the cria had no effect on either survival or growth.

Why this study matters

For two reasons, and the second is more interesting than the first.

The first: it is the only randomized controlled experiment that exists on neonatal survival of the South American camelid, and the effect is enormous — thirty-six percentage points of survival between the unprotected and the protected arm, on groups of 50. In a literature made up of case reports and retrospective series, a finding of this shape is a rarity that should be put to use.

The second: the arm that failed teaches more than the one that won. The semi-open shed — that is, the «serious» intervention, the one that costs money, the one that is built — was not found to differ from the open corral (76 % versus 64 %, P = 0.275). And the authors say why, with two observations found in the full text: inside the shed they measured temperatures similar to those outside («data not shown», and this is a limitation), and they saw a large proportion of females with their crias remain consistently outside the shed. The shelter had been adapted from models for cattle and sheep. A structure that the animal does not use protects no one, and no budget estimate says so.

Obiettivo

Dichiarato dagli autori: «comparing three different management strategies (semi-open shed, open corral, and cria body vest in an open corral) on alpaca cria survival and body weight gain to 12 weeks of age».

Objective

Stated by the authors: «comparing three different management strategies (semi-open shed, open corral, and cria body vest in an open corral) on alpaca cria survival and body weight gain to 12 weeks of age».

Clinical question in PICO form (editorial formulation; here the design allows it in full): in a newborn alpaca cria in extensive high-altitude Andean farming [P], a vest worn overnight, or a semi-open shed [I], compared with traditional overnight housing in an open corral without shelter [C], increase survival at 12 weeks and daily weight gain [O]?

Disegno dello studio

Disegno completamente randomizzato.

La sequenza conta: l'ingestione di colostro viene prima dell'assegnazione, e gli autori lo dichiarano come tentativo esplicito di neutralizzare il fallimento del trasferimento passivo come variabile confondente — «we attempted to circumvent this issue in the current study by ensuring colostrum intake by all crias».

Study design

Completely randomized design. Dependent variables: cria survival and weight gain at 12 weeks. Independent variables: sex (male/female) and protection strategy (OC / BV / SH).

The crias were allowed to take colostrum first, before being individually identified and weighed at birth, all within 2-4 hours of birth. The sequence matters: colostrum intake comes before assignment, and the authors state this as an explicit attempt to neutralize passive transfer failure as a confounding variable — «we attempted to circumvent this issue in the current study by ensuring colostrum intake by all crias».

Ethical approval: yes, stated — Ethics Committee of the Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad del Cusco, CBI-UNSACC-2020-005.

⚠️ What the method does not say. The procedure by which randomization was carried out (how the sequence was generated, allocation concealment, who assigned) is not described; no blinding is described, and the cause of death was attributed by those who knew the group. There is no sample size calculation: the 50 per group is a stated number, not a justified one.

Metodi / Protocollo

Significatività a P < 0,05. Software R, versione 3.3.3.

Methods / Protocol

The vest (BV). Outer shell in waterproof nylon, inner lining in polar fleece, fastened to the cria with ties on the forelimbs and under the chest. Kept on until 12 weeks and readjusted every week to follow growth. The dimensions of the vest are reported by the authors only in panel B of Figure 1, which this record was not able to read as a numerical value → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Anyone wishing to replicate the device must open that figure: it is the article's only construction specification, and without it the «vest» is not a protocol but an idea.

The open corral (OC, control). 600 m², stone wall 1.2 m high, no covering. Cria and mothers together, at night.

The semi-open shed (SH). Beaten-earth enclosure of 560 m² containing the shed; shed 3.5 m deep, 6 m wide, three stone walls from 1.8 to 2.5 m high, the fourth side a movable net 1.2 m high, roof in galvanized sheet metal (calamina).

Measurements. Individual identification shortly after birth; birth weight with a portable digital hanging scale (Kambor®, Germany); weight repeated every 7 days up to 12 weeks; mortality recorded every day; all measurements taken in the first three hours of the morning. Cause of death determined by necropsy and/or observation of pre-mortem clinical signs — that is, not always by necropsy, and the proportion of the two methods is not reported → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Analysis. Survival: bivariate analysis with Fisher's exact test. Growth: calculated as (final weight − initial weight) / days of age at final weight, analyzed in ANOVA with main effects of strategy and sex and their two-way interaction; the interaction was not found to be present and the final analysis included only the main effects. Comparison of means with Tukey's test. Significance at P < 0.05. Software R, version 3.3.3.

Risultati principali

Sopravvivenza a 12 settimane (n = 50 per gruppo):

GruppoSopravvissutiSopravvivenzaMortiMortalità
BV — gilet, recinto aperto50/50100 %0/500 %
SH — tettoia semiaperta38/5076 %12/5024 %
OC — recinto aperto (controllo)32/5064 %18/5036 %

BV contro SH: P = 0,001. BV contro OC: P = 0,001.

Concludono che queste qualità «may have favored homeostasis during the first week(s) of life».

BV versus SH: P = 0.001. BV versus OC: P = 0.001. SH versus OC: P = 0.275 (Fisher's exact test) — that is, shed and open corral are not distinguishable. No effect of sex on survival (P < 0.999).

⚠️ An internal discrepancy in the article, reported because the reader will encounter it. The abstract gives for survival P = 0.001; the text of the Results section gives for the same comparison P < 0.001 and for SH-versus-OC P < 0.190, while Table 1 reports 0.001 and 0.275. The conclusions do not change under any of the three readings. The record cites the values from Table 1, which is the primary location of the data, and flags the discrepancy rather than silently choosing one.

Causes of death (Table 1 of the article, absolute counts out of 50 per group):

GroupEnteritisEnterotoxemiaPneumoniaStarvationCrushingTotal deaths
BV000000
SH4142112
OC3364218

Thirty crias died in total: overall mortality 20 % (30/150), and all deaths occurred within the first six weeks of life. When they died: of the 12 SH, 3 at night and 9 during the day on pasture; of the 18 OC, 5 at night (2 near the corral wall, 3 in the middle) and 13 during the day on pasture. The authors state that no medical intervention was possible, due to the extent of the pastures.

Daily weight gain, first 12 weeks (mean ± standard deviation, per the model): BV 0.17 ± 0.03 kg/day; SH 0.14 ± 0.02 kg/day; OC 0.13 ± 0.04 kg/day; P < 0.001, means separated with Tukey's test. No effect of sex (P < 0.979): 0.15 kg/day in both males and females.

⚠️ Birth weight was measured but is not reported as a mean per group in the full text read: it is therefore not verifiable that the three groups started from comparable weights → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. In a randomized trial with n = 50 per arm the imbalance is unlikely, but «unlikely» is not «verified».

Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)

The authors attribute the vest's result to the properties of the materials: conductivity, thermal capacity, air-trapping capacity and thermal insulation of the inner fleece; water and wind imperviousness, body heat retention and breathability of the outer nylon. They conclude that these qualities «may have favored homeostasis during the first week(s) of life». It is a hypothesis of mechanism, not a measurement: no body temperature, no thermography, no energy expenditure was recorded on the crias.

On the failure of the shed the authors propose two explanations, both stated as such: inadequate design (wall height, only three sides, roof type) and the animals' reluctance to stay inside; and they draw from this the recommendation that shelters should be designed for the alpaca, not adapted from those for cattle and sheep, «taking into account their peculiar behaviors».

On the greater variability observed in the OC group (standard deviation 0.04 versus 0.02 of SH) they advance the hypothesis that there exist individuals less affected than others by cold, and propose looking for genes associated with cold tolerance and considering genotype-environment interaction in breeding programs. It is a research proposal, not a result.

Implicazioni cliniche

Clinical implications

For the Italian veterinarian, today, in order of how well the data supports transfer.

  1. Fully holds: the shelter must be judged on use, not on design. The shed in this study was a real construction, in stone, with a sheet-metal roof — and it saved no one more than nothing. Anyone assessing a farm must ask whether the animals actually stay inside it, and verify this by looking, not by reading the floor plan. It is an observation transferable to any latitude.
  2. Fully holds: the first six weeks are the window. All thirty deaths occurred within six weeks. It is the period in which surveillance, weekly weighing and suspicion should be concentrated.
  3. Fully holds: the pattern of causes. Enteritis, enterotoxemia and pneumonia — that is, infectious causes — produced 21 of the 30 deaths (9 of 12 in SH, 12 of 18 in OC); starvation and crushing the other 9. Thermal protection reduced deaths that on the death certificate are called «infectious». It is the link between this record and C-02, C-04 and C-05: cold does not kill on its own, it kills by causing illness.
  4. Holds with caution: weekly weighing as a diagnostic tool. A gap of 0.04 kg/day between two groups can only be seen by weighing. In the European context weekly weighing of the cria in the first three months is already recommended practice; this study gives it a measured reason.
  5. Does not hold, and it must be said: the vest is not a prescription for Italy. The effect was obtained against −3 °C at dawn at 4,193 m with wind of 3-4 m/s and humidity 75-82 %, on animals that sleep outdoors. The benefit in an Italian farm indoors or with enclosed housing has not been measured by anyone, and cannot be inferred from here. In a hypothermic, premature or dysmature cria, covering is a supportive measure already in use: this study is not proof that it works in that case — it is proof that it works in the Andean case.
  6. Attention to a risk the article does not discuss. A garment kept on for twelve weeks on a rapidly growing animal requires the weekly readjustment that the authors performed. Without that, the device becomes a constraint. The article does not report any adverse event (chafing injuries, maternal rejection, recognition difficulties) — nor does it report having looked for them → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Limiti

Dichiarati dagli autori.

Finanziamento: dichiarato — «This research was financially supported in part by the Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac located in Abancay, Perú (RR-178-2016)».

Conflitti di interesse: dichiarati — «The authors declare that there was no conflict of interest».

ARRIVE 2.0 li richiederebbe.

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 31/08/2026

Valutazione a stelle

AsseVotoMotivazione
La lezione sui ricoveri viaggia; i numeri no.

Limitations

Stated by the authors. The authors do not have a "limitations" section, and this is itself the first limitation. However, they acknowledge, within the discussion, three things: that temperatures inside and outside the shed were similar and that the data is not shown («data not shown»); that the weight of the females post-partum was not recorded, with the reason given; and that no medical intervention was possible due to the extent of the pastures.

Added by the editorial team.

  • The decisive thermal data is not in the article. The claim that inside the shed the temperature was the same as outside is the key to the interpretation of the entire SH arm, and is presented as data not shown. It is not verifiable → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
  • A single herd, a single season, a single breed. All 150 crias come from a single private herd in Iscahuaca, in a single birthing season, all Huacaya. There is no spatial or temporal replication: any particularity of that herd or of that year is confounded with treatment.
  • Randomization is stated but not described, and there is no blinding. The cause of death was attributed by observers who knew which group the animal belonged to, and in part without necropsy. On survival — a hard outcome, alive or dead — this carries little weight; on the breakdown of causes of death, which is the most suggestive table in the article, it carries a great deal.
  • The BV group has zero events, and zero events is an awkward number. A survival of 100 % on 50 animals has a 95 % confidence interval that does not reach 100 % (with the rule of three, the lower bound of survival sits around 94 %); the article does not report any confidence interval, for any result. A true and large effect remains true and large, but «100 %» is the point estimate of a sample, not a promise.
  • No time-to-event analysis. With mortality recorded daily for 12 weeks, a survival curve was possible and would have been more informative than a Fisher's test on a 2×3 table. It was not done.
  • Confounding not separable between the vest and surveillance capacity. The crias with the vest were dressed, readjusted and handled every week. It is not possible to separate the thermal effect of the garment from the effect of being the animal that someone looks at closely seven times more often. The authors do not raise the point.

Funding: stated — «This research was financially supported in part by the Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac located in Abancay, Perú (RR-178-2016)». Public academic funder, with resolution number. The role of the sponsor in the design, the analysis and the decision to publish is not specified.

Conflicts of interest: stated — «The authors declare that there was no conflict of interest». The PubMed record does not report a CoiStatement, but the declaration is in the full text. Non-accusatory but necessary note: the vest is an artisanal device with no named manufacturer nor brand in the article; there is therefore no identifiable commercial interest behind the winning arm. It is information the reader has a right to have alongside the result.

What is missing relative to the reporting standard (REFLECT / ARRIVE 2.0).

  • Method of generating the randomization sequence and allocation concealment: absent. REFLECT requires them, as does CONSORT, from which it derives.
  • Sample size calculation: absent. The 50 per arm are not justified.
  • Blinding of outcome assessors: absent, and not discussed.
  • Precision measures (95 % CI) for the primary outcomes: absent; P values and standard deviations are reported, not intervals.
  • Unit of randomization and unit of analysis: the individual is randomized, but cria and mothers shared the same enclosure per group — which means that the group is also a place, and the true experimental unit could be the enclosure, not the cria. The article does not address the point; it is the most serious methodological gap in the list.
  • Flow diagram of animals (assigned, lost, analyzed): absent. It is reconstructable here from the numbers because no loss to follow-up is stated, but it must be reconstructed by the reader.
  • Data on animal welfare in the BV arm (adverse events related to the garment): absent. ARRIVE 2.0 would require them.

◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 31/08/2026

The article was written to show that the coat works; the figure that matters here is another one: the semi-open shelter made no difference (P = 0.275).

It was written to say that the vest works. We will use it to say that the shed did not work, because that is the sentence that, in Italy, saves money and animals.

The number that must be memorized is 0.275. It is the P of the comparison between the semi-open shed and the open corral: no difference. Someone built a shelter of 3.5 × 6 meters with three stone walls up to 2.5 meters high and a galvanized sheet-metal roof, and the result on cria survival was statistically indistinguishable from having built nothing. The two explanations the authors give are both trivial and both verifiable by anyone in half an hour: it wasn't warmer inside than outside, and the animals stayed outside anyway.

This is how money gets spent on a camelid farm in Europe. The structure gets built, because the structure can be seen, photographed, put in the grant application and shown to the visitor. Then no one measures the temperature inside, no one counts how many animals actually sleep there, and the fact that mortality does not fall gets attributed to anything else. The verification tool costs fifteen euros — a data-logging thermometer with memory, one inside and one outside, for a month — and this article is proof that someone who did take that measurement discovered that their shed was useless.

On the vest, on the other hand, our position is one of declared caution, and it needs explaining because it is unpopular. The effect is real, it is large, it is randomized. But it was obtained against −3 °C at 4,193 meters with wind and high humidity, on animals that sleep outdoors all year round. An Italian alpaca farm — Po Valley, Apennines, prealps — has a thermal problem that is different in nature, not in intensity: rarely the dry high-altitude nighttime cold, much more often humidity, mud, closed and poorly ventilated housing, and in summer heat, which in the camelid is a more serious problem than cold and which this study does not touch at all. Whoever imports the vest from the Andes to Italy is importing the answer without the question.

There is then something the article does not separate out and that we cannot pretend not to see. The crias in the BV group were dressed at birth and readjusted every week for twelve weeks. That is, they are the animals that someone picked up, looked at closely and assessed twelve times more than the others. In a herd where «no medical intervention was possible» due to the extent of the pastures, this difference is not a detail: it is a second variable traveling alongside the first, and no one measured it. We are not saying that the effect is due to this. We are saying that the article is not able to exclude it, and that the way to exclude it was obvious — a fourth arm, handled every week without a vest — and it would have cost fifty more crias.

The reading we propose, in one sentence. This is not a study of the vest. It is a study that demonstrates that close and repeated contact with the cria in the first six weeks is accompanied by a survival of 100 %, and that a structure built for other species is not worth the cost of its shadow. Of the two, the second is demonstrated; the first is our hypothesis, and it is labeled as such.

What we would do, with this in hand. We would not promote the vest. We would promote three things: (a) the thermometer in the shelter, with the reading compared against the outside, as a minimum requirement to call a «shelter» a shelter; (b) weekly weighing of the cria up to the twelfth week, which is the window in which this study saw 100 % of its deaths occur; (c) recorded observation of where the animals sleep, because reluctance to enter was the most costly observation in the article and is within reach of anyone with eyes.

Star rating

AxisScoreRationale
A · Scientific quality★★★☆☆Experimental study with declared ethical approval (CBI-UNSACC-2020-005), stated and sex-balanced sample size, control group of current practice, analysis appropriate to the design, funding and conflicts declared: the ★★★ level is fully earned. The fourth star, which the CRL grid reserves for those with «randomization described in the method» and «limitations discussed», is not reached: the randomization sequence and allocation concealment are not described, there is no blinding of those who attributed causes of death, there is no sample size calculation, there is no limitations section, and the thermal data on which the interpretation of the SH arm rests is stated as data not shown.
B · Clinical utility★★★☆☆Offers two replicable and described procedures (the comparison of shelters with internal/external measurement; weekly weight monitoring to 12 weeks) to be used with the caution the context imposes. Does not reach four because the main result is not applicable with reasonable confidence to the European context: it was obtained under climatic and management conditions that do not occur in Italy, and the conditions of use outside the Andes have not been made explicit by anyone. The vest's construction dimensions, the winning arm's only reproducible specification, are found only in a figure.
C · Educational value★★★★☆First-rate training material, and not for the reason it seems: it teaches, with a real experiment, that a costly structural intervention can do nothing and that the way to notice this is to measure temperature and look at where the animals sleep. The table of causes of death by group is didactically excellent. It does not reach five because on none of its topics is it the first-choice reference in the species: it is the only reference, which is another matter.
D · Relevance to the species★★☆☆☆Study on alpaca — the right species — but in an extensive Andean system at 4,193 m with −3 °C at dawn, which the CRL grid describes exactly as «a context very distant from the European one». A single herd, a single season, a single breed. The lesson on shelters travels; the numbers do not.

No overall score, by design. A = 3 and C = 4 are not in contradiction: a methodologically incomplete study can teach a great deal, provided one says where it is incomplete.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that, in extensive high-altitude Andean farming, protecting the cria with a vest worn from birth and readjusted weekly was accompanied by a survival at 12 weeks of 100 % (50/50) versus 64 % (32/50) for traditional housing, and that a semi-open shed adapted from models for cattle and sheep did no better than nothing (76 % versus 64 %, P = 0.275).

It cannot be concluded that a vest improves cria survival on an Italian farm, nor that the observed effect is due to thermal insulation rather than the weekly handling that accompanied it: neither of these two things was measured.

Messaggi da portare a casa

  1. Tettoia 76 %, recinto aperto 64 %, P = 0,275.

Takeaway messages

  1. Shed 76 %, open corral 64 %, P = 0.275. A real structure, in stone and sheet metal, did not beat not having it. A shelter should be judged on the temperature measured inside and on the number of animals that actually sleep there, not on its design.
  2. All thirty deaths occurred within the first six weeks (30/150, overall mortality 20 %). It is the window on which surveillance and weighing should be concentrated.
  3. Twenty-one of thirty deaths had an infectious cause (enteritis, enterotoxemia, pneumonia). Thermal protection reduced deaths that on the report are called infectious: cold and infection are not two separate chapters in the cria.
  4. The 100 % of the vest group is a point estimate on 50 animals, with no confidence intervals anywhere in the article, and travels together with twelve weekly handlings that no one separated from the effect of the garment.
  5. It is the only randomized controlled experiment on cria survival that exists. It should be used — and used knowing that it holds for the Andes at 4,193 meters.

Record CRL-C-01 · version 1.0 · 31/08/2026 · summarizes a single source, not a body of literature. It has not been searched, and therefore it is not excluded, whether studies subsequent to 2021 on thermal protection strategies for the cria exist, nor studies conducted in Europe on the same question. The vest's construction dimension and the shed's internal/external thermal data remain to be read in the figured full text.
