Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Titolo originale

«Neonatology and Neonatal Disorders»

Titolo in italiano (traduzione redazionale): «Neonatologia e disturbi neonatali».

Original title

«Neonatology and Neonatal Disorders»

Italian title (editorial translation): «Neonatologia e disturbi neonatali».

⚠️ This is chapter 42 of a clinical textbook, written by two authors, and it is not a review like the one in card C-07. Three warnings before any number. First: the chapter speaks almost always in the impersonal voice («may be», «is usually», «appears»): the first person appears only once in the whole text («on the basis of our laboratory equipment, we usually recommend a transfusion…»), and so for most of the doses the reader cannot tell the authors' practice from the data of a cited paper. The card does this for the reader, row by row, in the dose table. Second: part of the numbers are unpublished or personal: four times «unpublished» (three studies and one 2000 dataset), two «personal communication», two «anecdotal». Third: no number in this card is a result of the chapter; every number is reported, and where the source is someone else's paper the card says so through the chapter, because the cited papers were not read.

Autori

Authors

Whitehead Claire E. and Cebra Christopher — the two authors of the chapter, in the order of the Crossref record (queried on 11/10/2026) and of the deposited text (Europe PMC: «Whitehead CE, Cebra C»). Cebra C. is also the first of the five editors of the volume. In the OpenAlex record only Cebra has an ORCID (shown in the record, not in the deposited text); no record reports one for Whitehead.

Volume editors: Cebra C, Anderson DE, Tibary A, Van Saun RJ, Johnson LW.

Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

State University; University of Tennessee; Washington State University; Pennsylvania State University; Colorado State University).

Corresponding author affiliation

The deposited text does not designate a corresponding author and gives no affiliations for the two authors of the chapter: the front matter shows only the affiliations of the five editors (Oregon State University; University of Tennessee; Washington State University; Pennsylvania State University; Colorado State University). Card C-07, by the same first author, reports an affiliation of the Royal Veterinary College for a 2009 paper: this is not a datum of this chapter and it is not transferred here.

Specie e soggetti

Nessun soggetto proprio.

Species and subjects

No subjects of its own. The chapter concerns neonatal and young llama and alpaca (crias), with the clinical core on the cria under two weeks of age; individual sections go down to crias of 2-4 months (colic, rickets) and, for orthopedic surgery, to animals of 14-18 months. The data reported come from papers on llamas and alpacas, mostly North American, Australian and British (clinical cases and small series), from physiology papers on the llama fetus (adaptation to hypoxia), from calves (atresia of the colon and anus, discharge rates after surgery), from foals (fever in sepsis, peritoneum) and from sheep (vitamin D, pigmentation). The text also cites the dromedary for one point only (llama, alpaca and dromedary plasma are said to be interchangeable for transfusion). The card gives the species next to every number.

Study type and level of evidence

Clinical textbook chapter by two authors, with no declared search strategy and no statement of aim. The field is defined by the title and the table of contents: the conditions of the neonate (and of the young cria) in order of clinical presentation, from breathing to lameness.

Level of evidence: structured opinion of two clinicians on a literature that the reader cannot reconstruct. The body is made of four materials, which the card keeps distinct: (a) the published case material on the camelid (mostly case reports and small series, 95 references from 1971 to 2011, only six from 2010 onward); (b) data extrapolated from calf, foal, lamb and human; (c) the authors' practice, partly indicated («we usually recommend», «our laboratory equipment») and partly not indicated because written in impersonal form; (d) unpublished or personal data.

Consequence for the reader. The selection of the papers discussed is not reproducible: this card summarizes the reading of two authors, not the state of the literature. Where the text names the primary paper, the card names it and refers to it.

Relevant reporting standard: no reporting guideline exists for narrative reviews; the SANRA quality scale is used (chapter 14 §4.2). The authors declare no standard. The score compiled by the editorial team, item by item, is in the rating box: 4/12. That SANRA was designed for journal articles and not for textbook chapters is a caveat of the editorial team: the scale is applied because it is the only one in the series for narrative texts, and here its score mainly measures the absence of a literature search and of a stated aim.

In breve

In brief

The chapter is the clinical path of the sick cria, ordered by symptom and by system. It opens with the assessment of the neonate that starts badly (breathing, standing, nursing), moves to the critical cria (blood tests, fluids, plasma, hypothermia, fever, sepsis, respiratory function, seizures, heart murmurs), then to abdominal pain and distension (atresias, meconium, feeding errors, umbilical abscess, peritoneal fluid, obstructions, ulcers of the third compartment), to diarrhea (only as a table: the agents and their handling are referred to another chapter of the volume), to the urinary system and to the limbs (ligament laxity, flexural and angular deformities, rickets, septic arthritis). The thread that holds it together is the chain that starts from nursing: the cria that does not nurse becomes dehydrated, may become hypoglycemic or lack immunoglobulins, and then septic. The authors write that the cria is more prone than the calf and the foal to hypoproteinemia, hypernatremia and hyperglycemia, and that the cria is rarely severely dehydrated and more often in septic shock or with impaired renal or hepatic function. Among the numbers reported: in South America 20% to 80% of crias do not reach weaning (no source); in a single unpublished study 13% of sick crias were hypoglycemic.

Why this study matters

First reason: it treats the sick cria by system, not only for sepsis and diarrhea. The 2009 review (card C-07), as the card summarizes it, stops at sepsis, meningitis, umbilicus, joints and diarrhea; this chapter adds breathing and ventilation, the heart, the abdomen, the kidney, the malformed vulva and anus, the developmental defects of the limbs and rickets.

Second reason: it says, in several places, that the datum in the camelid is missing. Brown adipose tissue «has not been specifically documented in camelids to date»; it is not known «when surfactant is produced in the lungs of camelids»; for the heritability of cardiac defects and atresias «hard data for camelids are still lacking»; survival rates after surgery for atresia of the colon are, for the cria, «not available»; the prophylaxis of ulcers in the hospitalized cria has a risk «undefined». These are five renunciations of an assertion, written in the text.

Third reason: it corrects two common ideas. «It is a dangerous misperception that the majority of sick neonates need supplemental glucose»: in a single unpublished study, 13% of sick crias were hypoglycemic and 14% had a blood glucose above 200 mg/dL (11 mmol/L), hence the indication to measure before giving. And fever is not a requirement of sepsis: in a study of 21 crias with culture-positive sepsis none had a rectal temperature above 39 °C, and 7 (33%) were hypothermic.

Fourth reason: it contains operational numbers for the cria. For example the radiographic transit times of barium in the neonatal llama cria, the dose of vitamin D that poisons (in two alpaca crias) and the one that prevents rickets, the volume of plasma and the infusion rate. With a warning that this card repeats: many of these doses have no source (table that follows).

Fifth reason, internal to the series. The chapter cites as references 12 and 15 two 2009 papers by the same first author, among them the review summarized in card C-07: the two cards are therefore two levels of the same discourse, and should be read together.

Obiettivo

Il capitolo non dichiara uno scopo. La frase di apertura è una premessa: «Management of the newborn alpaca or llama cria requires both the owner and the clinician to be familiar with the normal state to correctly identify abnormalities and to prevent or treat potential problems.»

Objective

The chapter does not state an aim. The opening sentence is a premise: «Management of the newborn alpaca or llama cria requires both the owner and the clinician to be familiar with the normal state to correctly identify abnormalities and to prevent or treat potential problems.» The aim is inferred from the title and the table of contents.

Clinical question (editorial wording; the PICO format does not apply to a descriptive treatment): in a llama or alpaca cria in the first weeks of life that presents weak, collapsed, with a painful belly, with diarrhea, with a defect of the urinary system or with a deformed limb [P], which conditions are to be considered, in which order are they assessed and treated, and which interventions do the authors report [outcome]?

Disegno dello studio

Study design

Textbook chapter of 24 pages, 95 references, 12 figures, one table and two boxes. Structure: the abnormal neonate (dysmaturity, prematurity); the critical cria (blood, fluids, hypothermia, fever, sepsis, breathing, seizures, heart murmurs); the abdomen (atresias, meconium, nutrition, umbilicus, peritoneal fluid, obstructions, ulcers); diarrhea; the urinary system; the limbs.

⚠️ Not verifiable and therefore not asserted: the existence of a criterion for choosing the papers (absent, as far as the text says), the origin of data without a bibliographic entry, the conditions under which the unpublished data were collected (places, years, criteria), and the doses without a reference.

Metodi / Protocollo

Methods / Protocol

The chapter has no methods. No database, no search string, no range of years, no language, no inclusion criterion. The sources include articles, chapters of other textbooks (large animal internal medicine, surgery and medicine of South American camelids, veterinary antimicrobial therapy), four conference proceedings or abstracts, a breeders' magazine article (1990), four unpublished datasets and two personal communications, and a sentence that refers to other chapters of the same volume for cardiology, abdominal surgery and diarrhea.

Doses. The chapter contains many doses. They are reported in the table that follows, each with dose, route, species and source, and with an indication of how much is measured in the camelid. Doses without a specific source are marked as such: the text does not say whether they are the practice of the authors, of others, or extrapolation. The card does not recommend them.

The text also gives, without a specific source: oxygen 2-4 L/hour at 100% by nasal catheter, to be given when arterial oxygen pressure falls below 60 mmHg, and ventilation when carbon dioxide pressure exceeds 60 mmHg; mechanical ventilation with tidal volume 4-8 mL/kg, 20-30 breaths/minute, peak inspiratory pressure below 20 cmH₂O; an initial volume of milk (or substitute) of about 3.5% of body weight in the absence of colostrum (the same percentage as the gastric capacity of the cria); overfeeding above 15% of body weight in 24 hours. It gives no doses for the systemic and intra-articular antibiotics of septic arthritis. The «L/hour» value for oxygen is the one written in the text and was not verified elsewhere.

Risultati principali

  • Perdite: nel Sud America dal 20 % all'80 % dei cria non sopravvive fino allo svezzamento, per cause «many of which have not been cataloged»; nelle popolazioni nordamericane il tasso è più basso ma «figures are not available». Le aziende ben gestite «should aim to lose fewer than 5%» dei cria in un anno.
«Lack of satisfactory progress over that time usually indicates a severe congenital abnormality or an acquired disease.»
Rischi: ipotermia, ipo- o iperglicemia, scambi gassosi insufficienti (per il surfattante: «it is unknown when surfactant is produced in the lungs of camelids»), assorbimento insufficiente degli anticorpi.

  • Glicemia: «It is a dangerous misperception that the majority of sick neonates need supplemental glucose.» Soglia convulsiva «just under 40 mg/dL» (2,22 mmol/L) e supplemento sotto 70 mg/dL (3,9 mmol/L), senza riferimento.

Fluidi, plasma, accesso venoso

  • Antibiotici e antiinfiammatori: la maggior parte degli antibiotici iniettabili usati nei puledri e nei vitelli «may be used in crias at similar dosage rates and intervals» (affermazione senza riferimento).

8, rassegna generale), che però «has not been specifically documented in camelids to date»: il suo ruolo nel cria è dunque incerto.

«Generally, sepsis should be considered a possible cause or complication of almost any disease or disease sign in a neonate.»

Gli autori scrivono che queste risposte del feto «appear to be preserved into the neonatal period» (rif.

L'emogasanalisi prima e durante l'ossigeno orienta sullo shunt (nello shunt destro-sinistro l'ossigenazione migliora poco).

Dolore e distensione addominale

In bovino e suino l'atresia ani è ritenuta ereditaria; nel camelide «atresia ani has been reported anecdotally in related llamas».
51-53). «Information about survival rates in crias is not available.» Anastomosi colo-colica termino-laterale raccomandata.
  • Liquido peritoneale: nell'adulto sano (alpaca e lama) fino a 3.000 cellule nucleate/µL, meno di 2.000 neutrofili/µL, proteine sotto 2,5 g/dL (rif.

  • Vulva imperforata: in 6 alpaca (rif.

Arti

Due frasi riassumono il tono: «Identifying the neonates that require interventions and determining the level are matters of experience and good diagnostic evaluation.» e «Generally, the earlier the critical cria is recognized and treated, the better is the outcome.» Sono osservazioni cliniche, senza numeri di sopravvivenza.

Main results

(everything that follows is «the authors report»; the primary sources were not read. Where the text cites a paper, the card gives its reference; where it does not, the card says so.)

The neonate that starts badly

  • Losses: in South America 20% to 80% of crias do not survive to weaning, for causes «many of which have not been cataloged»; in North American populations the rate is lower but «figures are not available». Well-managed farms «should aim to lose fewer than 5%» of their crias in a year. None of the three statements has a reference.
  • Crias at risk from the start: those born outside the «daylight window» for birth (suggesting a prolonged delivery or an illness of the dam or fetus), after a difficult delivery or by cesarean section. They are slow to reach sternal recumbency, to stand and to nurse. The three vital things in the first hours are breathing, standing, nursing, in that order; checking the choanae with a soft rubber catheter in each nostril, oxygen with nasal prongs («self-retaining»), intubation if ventilation is needed.
  • Helping to stand: every 10-20 minutes; the three best points of contact are the sternum and the two points of the hips; a towel under the abdomen may increase abdominal pressure and restrict breathing.
  • Colostrum and milk: if the dam has colostrum, let the cria nurse or milk her; otherwise camelid or ruminant colostrum for the first 12-24 hours (ruminant colostrum from herds free of paratuberculosis, if possible; bovine colostrum has been associated, in rare cases, with immune-mediated hemolysis). In the absence of colostrum, goat or cow milk or a replacer at an initial volume of about 3.5% of body weight, and in that case plasma «should be strongly considered». The text warns that some think camelid milk has metabolic effects beyond nutrition (not proven) and that a cria fed milk of another species should be observed for the signs of a hyperglycemic disorder.
  • Plasma for failure of passive transfer (FPT): llama, alpaca and dromedary plasma is said to be interchangeable («appear to be»), cross-matching rarely necessary and complications «rare». One commercial unit (300 mL) is often enough for an alpaca; a large llama cria with complete FPT may need two. The rate should be reduced if heart or respiratory rate rise by more than 10%. The intraperitoneal route (ventral midline or high right flank) is said to be common as a field procedure in uncomplicated FPT; if rapid (5-10 minutes) it causes abdominal discomfort, and a non-sterile technique or perforation of the bowel causes peritonitis or hemorrhage.
  • Expected course of crias that start slowly: they learn to nurse and stand within 48 hours; oxygen is rarely needed beyond 72 hours and often for less than 24. «Lack of satisfactory progress over that time usually indicates a severe congenital abnormality or an acquired disease.»
  • Prematurity and dysmaturity: a cria born after less than 335 days of gestation «could be considered premature» (the text itself says that normal length is variable and that «dysmature» is the more appropriate term). Signs: obtundation, low birth weight, unerupted incisors (the central ones normally erupt 2-3 weeks before birth), soft or curled ears, poor suckle reflex, silky coat, tendon laxity. Risks: hypothermia, hypo- or hyperglycemia, insufficient gas exchange (for surfactant: «it is unknown when surfactant is produced in the lungs of camelids»), insufficient absorption of antibodies. In a single referral hospital more than half of the dysmature crias had FPT; one paper (ref. 1, conference proceedings 2006) reports 75% survival, which the text attributes to arrival within 24 hours of birth in 87.5% of the cases. ⚠️ The text does not give the number of crias: 87.5% corresponds to 7 of 8 or 14 of 16, and 75% to 6 of 8 or 12 of 16; the card does not choose.
  • Tendon laxity of the premature: resolves by itself as the cria bears weight and the tendons strengthen; in severe cases splints from the elbow to below the fetlock, not for too long, because they may increase the laxity; daily check.

Blood tests and blood glucose

  • Blood count: in neonatal sepsis Gram-positives often cause neutrophilia with a left shift, Gram-negatives often an acute neutropenia that resolves in 3-5 days (refs. 2 and 3). Stress may mask neutropenia: a normal neutrophil count in a stressed camelid, especially with a left shift or toxic appearance, «may still be evidence of sepsis». Mycoplasma haemolamae has been identified in neonates (ref. 4, a 2011 paper on crias born to infected dams).
  • IgG: a low value may be a cause of sepsis (FPT) or a consequence (consumption); the later after birth it is measured, the less can be said about passive transfer, especially in sick crias. The chapter gives no IgG thresholds.
  • Blood glucose: «It is a dangerous misperception that the majority of sick neonates need supplemental glucose.» In an unpublished study, only 13% of sick crias were hypoglycemic (11% of those under 24 hours old) and 14% had a blood glucose above 200 mg/dL (11 mmol/L); the text does not give the number of crias. Seizure threshold «just under 40 mg/dL» (2.22 mmol/L) and supplementation below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L), without a reference. The most likely causes of hyperglycemia are stress and the administration of glucose.
  • Sodium: hypernatremia and hyperchloremia are much more frequent in sick crias (about 14%) than hyponatremia and hypochloremia (about 1%); above 165 mEq/L of sodium the measures of rehydration and of lowering glycemia are «aggressive». ⚠️ Neither value has a reference or a denominator.
  • Other values: hypokalemia in 38% of sick crias (from anorexia; no reference or denominator); azotemia in 14% in an unpublished study (a few with renal failure or congenital defects, most in hypovolemic or septic shock and responding to fluids); hepatic lipidosis in 12% of live-born crias that did not survive, the youngest 2 days old (no reference or denominator).
  • Acidosis: metabolic acidosis is the more frequent; bicarbonate is given below pH 7.25 (formula in the table) and is avoided in respiratory acidosis.

Fluids, plasma, venous access

  • Fluids: gastric capacity is about 3.5% of body weight, so oral administration should be limited. The cria is more prone than calf and foal to hypoproteinemia, hypernatremia and hyperglycemia, is rarely severely dehydrated and more often has septic shock or renal or hepatic compromise: hence the smaller initial bolus and the slower rate, and the warning to avoid fluids with glucose or lactate without a specific indication (values in the table).
  • Plasma: more effective than crystalloids at expanding volume in sick crias with increased endothelial permeability; synthetic colloids are used with increasing frequency in camelids, but in the cria the immunoglobulins matter as much as the colloid, so plasma is preferred. Rates that are too high cause tachypnea, dyspnea and central nervous signs. In the cited study (ref. 7, clinically healthy alpaca crias with FPT, 30 mL/kg of plasma over 90 minutes) plasma volume increased and arterial oxygen pressure improved, but lung volume decreased: the authors advise more caution with cardiac or systemic disease, and suggest monitoring central venous pressure.
  • Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories: most injectable antibiotics used in foals and calves «may be used in crias at similar dosage rates and intervals» (statement without a reference).
  • Venous access: early intravenous catheter, with samples taken from the catheter just placed under sterile conditions; hematoma after venipuncture is more frequent in the cria than in the adult. In hypovolemia with no accessible vein: intraosseous infusion with an 18-gauge spinal needle in the proximal femur.

Hypothermia, fever and hyperthermia

  • Hypothermia: fetal temperature is 0.3-0.5 °C higher than maternal; at birth the neonate depends on non-shivering thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (ref. 8, a general review), which however «has not been specifically documented in camelids to date»: its role in the cria is therefore uncertain. Newborn llama crias have very high thyroxine concentrations that fall over the first 90 days (ref. 9). Hypothermia causes depression, reduced reflexes, hypoventilation, hypoxia, acidemia, arrhythmias; it predisposes to FPT (less nursing); hypoglycemia, «although uncommon», may be associated.
  • Warming: a draft-free environment, drying, lamps, blankets and hot-water bottles, forced-air warming blankets (effective because of the relatively large surface area of the cria); insulate the cria from direct contact with the heat source and turn it often if recumbent, because excessive heat causes cutaneous vasodilation and lowers core temperature; warm-water bathing is not recommended; lamps should be above the height of a possible kick from the dam.
  • Normal temperature of the cria: 37.8-38.9 °C (refs. 12 and 13); hyperthermia from 39 °C (written once as 102.2 °F and once as 102.1 °F). Fever is an inconsistent finding: in a study of 21 crias with sepsis none had a temperature above 39 °C, whatever the bacterium isolated, and 7 (33%) were hypothermic (ref. 2); in another retrospective study only 2 of 6 crias with Gram-negative sepsis were pyrexic (ref. 3). In septicemic foals the text cites 30% of cases being pyrexic (ref. 13).
  • Cooling of crias in heat stress: removal from the heat, fans, clipping, ice packs wrapped in towels, in the inguinal region; NSAIDs are indicated for heat stroke and for seizures from hyperthermia, whereas for lowering fever of other causes their use is described as «controversial». Above 41.5 °C (106.7 °F) thermoregulation fails.

Sepsis

  • Definition and agents: sepsis as systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) with documented or suspected infection (ref. 2). Most common isolates: E. coli, Pseudomonas, β-hemolytic streptococci, Enterococcus, Listeria monocytogenes, Citrobacter; Gram-negatives are 54% of diagnoses in one study and 72% in another review (refs. 2 and 16). ⚠️ Neither has a denominator in the text; 54% does not correspond to a whole fraction of 21 (11 of 21 is 52%, 12 of 21 is 57%), but the text does not say that the 54% is calculated on the 21 crias. The organisms are mostly opportunists, and infect the individual cria instead of causing outbreaks.
  • Picture: weakness, lethargy, hypothermia more often than fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, failure to nurse or to gain weight. The initial physical examination is often unremarkable, so laboratory tests are needed. «Generally, sepsis should be considered a possible cause or complication of almost any disease or disease sign in a neonate.» Total protein is not a good predictor of FPT in septic crias (ref. 2).
  • Treatment: support (fluids, environment, nutrition), plasma, anti-inflammatories and broad-spectrum antibiotics with attention to Gram-negatives (table). With the aminoglycoside: creatinine at least every 48 hours. In case of hypopyon: mydriatics (atropine drops) to avoid synechiae, glaucoma and enucleation. Prognosis «generally fair» if recognized and treated early and without morphological defects (dysmature lung, inadequate pharyngeal reflexes); vertebral or tissue abscesses may give late complications.

Breathing and oxygen

  • Signs: tachypnea, dyspnea, flared nostrils, open-mouth breathing and respiratory noises; more subtle are obtundation, poor growth, cyanosis. Dyspnea and open-mouth breathing may appear for a few hours even in healthy crias and should resolve within an hour.
  • Adaptations to altitude (refs. 18-24, physiology papers on the llama and the llama fetus): the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve is shifted to the left, with saturation ≥ 90% even at altitude; hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction is much reduced; the llama fetus responds to acute hypoxia with intense peripheral vasoconstriction and a modest increase in cerebral blood flow, with hypometabolism. The authors write that these fetal responses «appear to be preserved into the neonatal period» (ref. 24) and that the adaptations «may explain» why neonates tolerate hypoxia associated with congenital heart defects better than other domestic species: it is a hypothesis, not a clinical datum.
  • Thresholds and support: oxygen below PaO₂ 60 mmHg, ventilation above PaCO₂ 60 mmHg; oxygen by nasal catheter (values in the table); oxygen is not effective in a right-to-left shunt; a good improvement of the blood gas with oxygen is favorable for prognosis. Cyanosis when deoxyhemoglobin exceeds 2.5 g/dL.

Seizures

  • Causes: infectious, cerebral edema and metabolic are the most probable; in an unpublished study of 22 neonatal llamas and alpacas with neurological disease, 50% had an infectious disease and 64% of these a meningitis or encephalitis (the text does not give the absolute number). Seizures of the neonate may be subtle (tremors, involuntary movements, lip smacking, rapid eye movements), also in the cria.
  • Meningitis and meningoencephalitis: a rare sequel of neonatal sepsis. Cases with Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, Salmonella Newport, Streptococcus bovis (refs. 26-30). Variable and vague signs (weakness, depression, inability to stand, tremors, ataxia, opisthotonus, seizures); one case with abdominal discomfort alone at onset and one case presented because it slept more and more (meningitis with secondary hydrocephalus, diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid and CT). The cerebrospinal fluid is diagnostic with good probability. Prognosis «guarded» even with intensive care.

Heart murmurs

  • Heart rate of the neonate: mean 108 ± 18 beats/minute (ref. 31); a range of 80-120 is judged acceptable.
  • Murmurs: «relatively common» in neonates, mostly innocent or transient. Left systolic murmurs of grade 1-3 of 6 may persist for months (transient peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis, refs. 31 and 32); if the cria is vigorous and growing, reassessment is deferred (to 3-4 months). Murmurs above grade 3 of 6, right-sided or diastolic, or not resolving with therapy, are better investigated. Many significant murmurs are congenital defects; heritability is held probable but «hard data … are still lacking», so removal of survivors from breeding is advised. Blood gas before and during oxygen guides on shunt (in a right-to-left shunt oxygenation improves little).

Abdominal pain and distension

  • Atresia ani: the most frequent among the atresias reported in the camelid (refs. 37-39); it presents in the first 3 days; a rectovaginal fistula may delay the diagnosis (a female alpaca with atresia ani not recognized until 3 years; a 3-day-old alpaca cria with atresia of the rectum and a small fistula, which let only air through). Surgical correction with a circular incision and rectal «pull-through», 12 sutures, antibiotics for 5-7 days; some crias outgrow the correction and need a second operation. Those operated can be healthy but not breeding animals: heritability is to be discussed with the owner. In cattle and pigs atresia ani is held to be inherited; in the camelid «atresia ani has been reported anecdotally in related llamas».
  • Atresia of the colon: a single case reported in the camelid, in a 10-day-old cria that had been doing poorly since the second day (ref. 39). For comparison, the text reports from the calf: survival up to 19 days without diagnosis; age at presentation 3-18 days for atresia of the colon and under 4 days for atresia ani (refs. 40, 48); about a third of calves with atresia of the colon had FPT (ref. 51); discharge rates after surgery 35-44% (refs. 51-53). «Information about survival rates in crias is not available.» End-to-side colocolic anastomosis recommended.
  • Enterotoxemia: in a single report 27% of crias with clostridiosis had diarrhea (refs. 49 and 50); death usually 1-2 days after the first signs. ⚠️ The text gives no denominator, and the same citation (refs. 49 and 50) also supports the sentence on coccidiosis: the titles are «lesions associated with Eimeria macusaniensis *in neonatal alpacas dying from enterotoxemia» and «*E. macusaniensis infection in 15 llamas and 34 alpacas». The card reports the 27% but cannot say which of the two papers contains it.
  • Meconium: should be passed within 20 hours; obstruction presents with non-productive straining from 24 hours; the enema is in the table. If nothing is obtained, think of atresia.
  • Feeding errors: the bottle-fed cria may have a syndrome similar to «ruminal drinking» of the calf (milk in the first compartment instead of the third, from a deficit of the esophageal groove reflex): the most common cause is overfeeding above 15% of body weight in 24 hours or drinking too fast; remedies: smaller and more frequent meals and a small-orifice nipple; ultrasound and a thin tube to confirm and empty.
  • Umbilicus: umbilical infections «appear to be rare» in the camelid; ultrasound is useful even with a normal-looking stump.
  • Peritoneal fluid: in the healthy adult (alpaca and llama) up to 3,000 nucleated cells/µL, fewer than 2,000 neutrophils/µL, protein below 2.5 g/dL (ref. 59); in the neonate normal values are not established. Rupture of the bladder in the neonate «extremely rare»: one case, in a 6-week-old cria with urethral obstruction by a urate urolith (ref. 58). Peritonitis: most common isolates E. coli and streptococci; the presence of bowel contents in the fluid has a «guarded to grave» prognosis and the text recommends euthanasia. Intraperitoneal transfusion may cause peritonitis; in an already sick cria the intravenous route is preferable.
  • Obstructions and intussusception: intussusception «rare», a single case in the cria (ref. 56); wood shavings, pellets, grain, hair, sand, plant fiber and smectite have been associated with impactions of the spiral colon (refs. 34, 44, 61-63).
  • Barium study (ref. 36, neonatal llama crias; number not reported): with 11 mL/kg by tube, the contrast entered C1 and left C1 and C2 after a mean of 11.25 hours (range 4-22.5); in the bottle-fed cria it went directly to C3; total transit was long compared with the foal, with arrival in the ascending colon at a mean of 25 hours (16-37) and persistence up to 48-72 hours; to exclude an atresia of the colon the contrast must be seen in the rectum.
  • Third-compartment (C3) ulcers: in the necropsy of 87 llamas in a teaching hospital (ref. 64) ulcers were the cause of death in 5% and contributed to death or were an incidental finding in more than 20%; the incidence is said to be similar in the cria and the adult; many non-ruptured ulcers are silent; fecal occult blood is not reliable.

Diarrhea

  • Frequency: diarrhea is the most common cause of illness before weaning, with about 23% of crias affected in a 5-year study of 250 crias on four Ohio farms (unpublished data, 2000).
  • Table 42-1 (described in words): E. coli under 7 days, usually related to sepsis; coronavirus and rotavirus from 2 days (the first «common in the United States», the second «not common»); Cryptosporidium from 2 days; Giardia from 7 days; coccidia from 14 days (with prepatent infections possible earlier); Salmonella rare at any age; Clostridium perfringens from 3 to 80 days (types A, C, D); nematodes and cestodes from 60 days onward; plus non-infectious causes (nutritional, antibiotic-induced, portosystemic shunt, mechanical obstruction). For nematodes the text adds that diarrhea from nematodes or cestodes is rare under 2 months (ref. 69).
  • What the chapter does not give: no frequency per agent, no dose, no treatment: it refers to chapter 40 of the volume. It recommends a panel of tests, because co-infections blur the picture.

Urinary system

  • Congenital defects: rare, except vulvar deformities; genetic or teratogenic origin uncertain. Unilateral and bilateral renal agenesis (refs. 73, 74); a 4-day-old cria that was inappetent, treated for FPT and sepsis, returned within a month with azotemia (agenesis of the right kidney, confirmed at necropsy); a llama with suspected unilateral agenesis and contralateral hypoplasia lived about 2 years (personal communication). Agenesis of the bladder in a 10-day-old alpaca cria (ref. 75); duplication of the ureter in a 7-month-old alpaca (ref. 72), resolved with unilateral nephrectomy and ureterectomy.
  • Imperforate vulva: in 6 alpacas (ref. 70), 2 of 6 were full siblings, hence the hypothesis of heritability; quick correction, sedation not necessary, with about 0.1 mL of lidocaine by sacrococcygeal epidural, dorsal-to-ventral midline incision, ointment with antibiotic and steroid for 5-7 days. A similar defect in males (or intersex): perineal swelling full of urine and hypoplastic penis; requires urethrostomy.
  • Renal failure: creatinine in healthy neonates is low (little muscle mass), but higher in the first 48 hours. Toxic causes: gentamicin, oxytetracycline, vitamin D overdose. In two alpaca crias with anuric renal failure from vitamin D by mouth (ref. 80): estimated doses 3,750 IU/kg/day for 7 days and 12,987 IU/kg/day for 5 days; soft-tissue mineralization with hyperphosphatemia and hypercalcemia, seen on ultrasound as a continuous hyperechoic line and at necropsy as a white line in the medulla. Fractional excretion of sodium to distinguish prerenal from renal forms; fluids (table); furosemide by continuous infusion (table).

Limbs

  • Arthrogryposis: found in 21 of 895 crias with congenital defects in a study of congenital defects of the llama (ref. 81); the text judges it rare compared with calves and lambs.
  • Flexural deformities: less frequent than in the foal and the calf; usually mild and regressive; physiotherapy with manual stretching several times a day and splints for up to 2 weeks (dog gutter splints or half-rounds of PVC); prognosis worse for the carpus than for the distal joints. Surgery: suspensory ligament desmotomy had a favorable outcome in one cria (ref. 82); two earlier cases had unfavorable outcomes (ischemic necrosis of a distal limb after section of flexor tendons and suspensory ligament in a 1-day-old llama, ref. 83; luxation of the fetlock after wedge osteotomy, ref. 84); a 2-month-old cria with severe carpal deformity recovered after section of two tendons and a splint.
  • Selenium: deficiency may give weak neonates; the text reports «anecdotal» reports in camelids and the frequent use of selenium preparations in weak crias «regardless of cause». No dose.
  • Rickets: reported in camelids in North America, New Zealand, Australia and Europe (refs. 85-88). Signs: reduced growth, recumbency, angular deformities, hunched posture, lameness; the most evident blood alteration is hypophosphatemia. High risk in spring for recently weaned crias born in summer or autumn, put on fresh grass without supplementation (spring grass has little vitamin D₂); cutaneous D₃ synthesis falls in winter (cloud cover, latitude); dark pigmentation and thicker fleece are linked to lower photosynthesis (from the sheep, ref. 92, and from two papers on the alpaca, refs. 86 and 91). Crias weigh from 5 to 45 kg: the dose must be calculated on weight and not «per cria». The prophylactic dose and the risk of toxicity are in the table.
  • Angular deformities: the most common is carpal valgus; surgery by age: periosteal stripping with or without partial ulnar ostectomy (5 cm incision; bandage 7-10 days; reassessment at 30-45 days); above 10 degrees or in larger crias, transphyseal bridge on the radial physis with one cortical screw proximal and one distal (2.7 or 3.5 mm) and 18-20 gauge orthopedic wire in a figure-of-eight, usually to be removed after 3-4 weeks (otherwise varus). The radial physes close around 9 months, after which osteotomy is needed: bilateral wedge ostectomy of the distal radius in a 14-month-old alpaca with carpal valgus of 40° and 42° (ref. 93), walking at 12 months but with reduced carpal flexion; in an 18-month-old llama (ref. 94). A 1-month-old alpaca with congenital valgus of the metacarpophalangeal joint, corrected with a transphyseal bridge (ref. 95).
  • Septic arthritis (joint ill): usually affects a single joint; culture is often negative (bacteria in the synovium or antibiotics already given); «through-and-through» joint lavage, arthroscopy if fibrin deposits are large; systemic and intra-articular antibiotics and anti-inflammatories; look for and treat FPT. ⚠️ The text writes that septic joints are «less uncommon» in the cria than in the calf and the foal: literally this would mean «more common», but the rest of the sentence suggests «less common». The card does not resolve it.

The authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)

The chapter has no conclusions section. Two sentences summarize the tone: «Identifying the neonates that require interventions and determining the level are matters of experience and good diagnostic evaluation.» and «Generally, the earlier the critical cria is recognized and treated, the better is the outcome.» They are clinical observations, with no survival numbers.

Implicazioni cliniche

Clinical implications

For the Italian veterinarian who follows a herd of alpacas or llamas, and for the association that keeps them in custody.

  1. Measure, then decide. The chapter repeats that glucose is measured before giving glucose, that fever is absent in the sepsis of the cria (none of the 21 crias of the cited study had more than 39 °C) and that sodium rises easily: three numbers to know, all drawn from few animals or from unpublished data.
  2. Low temperature is corrected with caution. Heat insulated from direct contact, cria turned often, no warm bath: cutaneous vasodilation may lower core temperature (the authors' indication, without data).
  3. Plasma has a route and a rate. Intravenous with a filtered set, 20-30 mL/kg, the 30 mL/kg over at least an hour; the only study in the cria (clinically healthy alpacas with FPT) shows that even at 30 mL/kg over 90 minutes lung volume falls: with a suspect heart or lung, caution is due. The intraperitoneal route is a field procedure for uncomplicated FPT, to be avoided in an already sick cria.
  4. The doses in the table are not a prescription. Of the 17 rows, ten have no specific source; seven have one, but only in five is the reference a paper on the camelid that measures something of that dose (gentamicin in healthy llamas; barium in llama crias; prophylactic vitamin D in the alpaca; plasma in healthy alpaca crias with FPT; pantoprazole in adult alpacas), one (toxic vitamin D) describes an adverse event in two crias, and one (the bolus in shock) refers to a review that was not read. Two rows (the fluid boluses) contradict each other. Whoever uses them must bring them back to the formulary and to the indications in force in Italy, which this card has not verified.
  5. The murmur in the neonate is almost never the disease. Left systolic murmurs up to grade 3 of 6 are frequent and may last months; re-check at 3-4 months and investigate earlier if the cria does not grow, or if the murmur is louder, right-sided or diastolic. This is the authors' indication, with a reference to a 2009 review of cardiology.
  6. A congenital defect is discussed with the owner before operating. Atresias and malformations are held to be hereditary in cattle and probable in the camelid («hard data … are still lacking»): the authors advise removing those operated from breeding.
  7. Rickets exists in Europe too and vitamin D is a drug with a narrow margin. The chapter reports rickets of the camelid in Europe, a prophylactic indication in winter (1,000 IU/kg, 2-3 times) and two alpaca crias that went into anuric renal failure from oral doses estimated at thousands of IU/kg/day for 5-7 days. Card B-02 treats the same risk with its own numbers.
  8. The diarrhea of the cria, here, is only a table. The chapter gives the age of onset per agent and refers to another chapter for frequencies, diagnosis and therapy. For frequencies in studies with numbers see cards C-05 and C-07.
  9. Many procedures presuppose an equipped facility. Blood gas analysis, mechanical ventilation, monitoring of central venous pressure, CT and arthroscopy are not barn procedures; the chapter does not say how to adapt the sequence to the field, and the editorial team did not search for data on the availability of such facilities in Italy.
  10. No Italian data. The chapter contains no data on Italy, and the card did not search for any.

Limiti

Dichiarati dagli autori.

  7. Clostridiosi e diarrea: «Only 27% of crias with clostridiosis in one report had diarrhea» con due rinvii (rif.

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 12/10/2026

Limitations

Declared by the authors. The chapter has no limitations section. It does however declare in several places that the datum in the camelid is missing: brown adipose tissue is not documented; it is not known when the lung produces surfactant; the heritability of cardiac defects and atresias has no data; survival after surgery for atresia of the colon in the cria «is not available»; the risk of ulcers in the hospitalized cria is «undefined»; normal values of the peritoneal fluid of the neonate are not established; the role of camelid milk in glucose metabolism «has not yet been studied scientifically».

Added by the editorial team.

  • No declared literature search and no declared aim: the selection of papers is not reproducible.
  • The dosing is largely without a source. The table says so row by row. The impersonal voice of the chapter prevents telling the authors' practice from a datum of the literature; the only first person in the text concerns a transfusion threshold.
  • Extrapolation from other species: atresia of the colon, fever in sepsis, peritoneal fluid and vitamin D rest in part on calves, foals and lambs; the text often declares it but not always.
  • Unpublished and personal data: four unpublished data (13% hypoglycemia, 14% azotemia, 22 neonates with neurological disease, 23% diarrhea in 250 crias) and two personal communications are not reconstructible.
  • Percentages without a denominator: the 13%, 11%, 14%, 1%, 38%, 12% of blood values; the 27% of crias with clostridiosis and diarrhea; the 54% and 72% of Gram-negatives; the 75% and 87.5% of survival and arrival within 24 hours; the barium transit times without the number of animals.
  • Self-citation: ten of the 95 references have as author one of the two surnames of the authors of the chapter (eight with Cebra, two with Whitehead). It is not a defect, but the share of «house» literature is not negligible.
  • Mostly hospital-based and North American case material: the data are from crias brought to a clinic, therefore more severe than average.
  • Aging: the most recent reference is from 2011 (only 6 of 95 from 2010 onward); it was not searched, and it is therefore not excluded, whether after 2011 the literature on the sick cria has changed any of these indications.
  • The chapter refers to other chapters of the volume (cardiology, abdominal surgery, diarrhea, airways, disorders of energy metabolism, catheterization): those were not read, and what they say is not in the card.
  • Figures not seen: only the captions of the 12 figures were read.
  • Cited sources not read: everything the card says of a cited paper it says through the chapter.

Discrepancies verified by the editorial team on the text (not resolved with the primary papers; one line each):

  1. Fluid boluses: in the paragraph on fluids the initial bolus is 30 mL/kg (up to 90 mL/kg if overtly hypovolemic) with a rate up to 100 mL/kg/day; in the paragraph on renal failure the boluses in shock reach 100 mL/kg in 15-30 minutes but «boluses greater than 20 mL/kg are rarely necessary», then 2-4 mL/kg/hour. The two indications do not coincide.
  2. Percentage of Gram-negatives: 54% «in one study» and 72% «in another review», with no denominator; the 54% is not a whole fraction of the 21 crias of the sepsis study.
  3. Survival of dysmature crias: 75% survival and 87.5% arrival within 24 hours, with no number of animals.
  4. Reference to the wrong figure: the imperforate vulva is cited «see Figure 42-5», but the figure of the imperforate vulva is 42-1 and 42-5 is the abdominal radiograph of a two-week-old cria; a little further on the text writes «Figures 39-7 and 39-7» (the same number twice).
  5. Units: 39 °C is written 102.2 °F in the definition of hyperthermia and 102.1 °F in the reference to the study of 21 crias.
  6. Ambiguous sentence: septic joints are «less uncommon» in the cria than in the calf and the foal; literally «more common», in context probably «less common».
  7. Clostridiosis and diarrhea: «Only 27% of crias with clostridiosis in one report had diarrhea» with two citations (refs. 49 and 50) that also support the sentence on coccidiosis; it is not possible to say which paper contains the percentage.
  8. Different age thresholds between two texts by the same first author: table 42-1 gives coronavirus, rotavirus and Cryptosporidium from 2 days and coccidia from 14; card C-07 reports, from the 2009 review, coronavirus from 10 days, Cryptosporidium from 7 and coccidia from 21. It is not an internal contradiction of the chapter, but a difference between two sources that the card flags without resolving.
  9. Date and citations of the record: Crossref and PMC give print in 2014 and electronic publication on 6 December 2013 (OpenAlex gives the year 2013); citations are 7, 6 and 0 according to the three databases.

Funding: not declared in the text. No funder in the Crossref record or in that of Europe PMC (verified on 11/10/2026).

Conflicts of interest: not declared in the text (no statement found in the deposited text). The text names no commercial brands.

What is missing with respect to the reporting standard (SANRA). The description of the literature search (item 3) and the statement of aims (item 2) are missing altogether. Partial are: the justification of importance (item 1, with a quantified opening but no references), the referencing (item 4, for the unpublished data and the doses without a source), the scientific reasoning (item 5, for the origin of the doses) and the presentation of data (item 6, for the missing denominators). Outside SANRA but within the rules of the series: funding and conflicts not declared, no limitations section.

◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 12/10/2026

A chapter that covers a lot of ground in a confident voice, and a table of doses that does not say whose they are.

The merit of this chapter is its breadth ordered by symptom: whoever has before them a cria with a tight belly, a murmur or a crooked leg finds a starting point, with the published cases named and the renunciations declared (brown adipose tissue, surfactant, heritability, survival after surgery for atresia of the colon). The sentence on blood glucose, which corrects the habit of giving glucose to every sick cria, and the finding that fever is absent in the sepsis of the cria are worth the reading on their own.

Now the part that makes us reflect as an editorial team: the tone. The 2009 review (C-07) wrote «the author prefers», and the reader knew when they were reading a practice. This chapter writes «may be used», «usually», and the same doses arrive without saying whether they are proof, habit or extrapolation. In our table ten rows out of seventeen have no specific source and two contradict each other on fluid boluses. This is not a reproach to those who write a textbook: it is the reason why a dose, passing from a textbook to a card to a barn notebook, becomes a prescription. For this reason we have written, row by row, what is measured and what is not. Whoever uses those numbers should bring them back to an up-to-date formulary: we have not done so.

The comparison with C-07 is instructive. The two sources, by the same first author, give different age thresholds for the same agents of diarrhea; and the chapter, unlike the review, gives no frequency per agent. Read together they complement each other, they do not overlap. For the risk of vitamin D, which the chapter documents in two alpaca crias, card B-02 gives the numbers of a larger series.

A sentence for whoever has a cria in hand. In the first hours what counts is breathing, standing and nursing; the chapter says that crias that start slowly learn to do so within 48 hours and that, if this does not happen, a congenital defect or an illness is sought. The part that remains applicable without a hospital is that: helping the cria to stand, warming with caution, giving colostrum or plasma, measuring blood glucose before correcting it.

Star rating

SANRA compiled by the editorial team — 4/12.

SANRA itemScoreReason
1 · Importance1/2Quantified opening (20% to 80% of crias not weaned in South America), but without references and without North American data.
2 · Aims and questions0/2No aim stated: the field is defined by the title and the table of contents.
3 · Description of the literature search0/2Absent altogether.
4 · Referencing1/295 references, partly specific; four unpublished data, two personal communications, doses without a source, a citation that does not allow attributing the 27%.
5 · Scientific reasoning1/2Often declares what is not documented in the camelid; but the impersonal voice does not tell practice from proof, and the two indications on fluid boluses do not coincide.
6 · Presentation of outcome data1/2Species almost always stated; denominators often absent.

Conversion SANRA → stars according to chapter 14 §11: 3-5 → ★★☆☆☆.

AxisScoreRationale
A · Scientific quality★★☆☆☆SANRA 4/12, with a zero on the literature search and on the aims. Ceiling of chapter 14 §11: a narrative text does not reach five stars on this axis.
B · Clinical usefulness★★★☆☆Offers replicable procedures described in detail (stabilization, plasma, correction of atresia ani, vulvoplasty, transphyseal bridge), to be used with the caution imposed by the level of evidence. It does not rise to four because the doses are largely without a source (the constraint B ≤ A + 2 would allow four).
C · Teaching value★★★★☆Broad training text, with differentials by symptom, named cases and declared renunciations. It does not reach five because it does not tell practice from proof and because the references stop at 2011.
D · Relevance to the species★★★☆☆Entirely devoted to llamas and alpacas, but with mostly North American hospital case material, undescribed populations and important parts (atresia of the colon, fever in sepsis, vitamin D) resting on calves, foals and sheep.

No overall score, by construction. A = 2 and C = 4 is the signature of a good textbook: useful for orientation, fragile as a source of numbers.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that a 2014 textbook chapter by two authors reports for the llama and alpaca cria a sequence by system (breathing, blood glucose, fluids, plasma, temperature, sepsis, seizures, murmurs, abdomen, kidney, limbs); that in a single unpublished study 13% of sick crias were hypoglycemic, and that in a study of 21 crias with sepsis none had a temperature above 39 °C; and that the authors declare undocumented in the camelid brown adipose tissue, the time of surfactant production and the heritability data.

It cannot be concluded that the doses of the chapter are proven in the cria: ten rows out of seventeen of the table have no specific source and two contradict each other; nor that the age thresholds of the agents of diarrhea hold for Europe; nor that the outcome of congenital defects is known, because for the cria «information about survival rates … is not available». No datum on Italy can be drawn from here.

Messaggi da portare a casa

Take-home messages

  1. A textbook chapter is cited with its subject. Every number in this card is «the authors report»; the primary papers were not read.
  2. In the first hours three things count, in order: breathing, standing, nursing; a cria that does not do so within 48 hours usually has a congenital defect or an acquired disease.
  3. Blood glucose is measured before giving glucose: in a single unpublished study 13% of sick crias were hypoglycemic and 14% above 200 mg/dL.
  4. Fever is absent in the sepsis of the cria: in 21 crias with sepsis none above 39 °C, 7 (33%) hypothermic.
  5. Warming is done with caution: insulated heat, cria turned, no warm bath.
  6. Plasma has a route and a rate: 20-30 mL/kg intravenous with a filtered set; in healthy alpaca crias with FPT, 30 mL/kg over 90 minutes reduced lung volume.
  7. The doses in the table are mostly without a source: ten rows out of seventeen have no specific reference; the fluid boluses contradict each other.
  8. Rickets is described in Europe and vitamin D has a narrow margin: two alpaca crias in anuric renal failure with oral doses estimated at 3,750 and 12,987 IU/kg/day.
  9. A congenital defect is discussed with the owner before operating: the authors advise not using those operated for breeding.
  10. Diarrhea here is only a table of ages, with no frequencies or therapy.

Card CRL-C-08 · version 1.0 · 12/10/2026 · synthesizes a single source, read in full in the text deposited in PubMed Central (textbook chapter, 95 references, no reference read; figures seen only in the captions). It was not searched, and it is therefore not excluded, whether after 2011 more recent papers on the sick cria have appeared; Italian sources and the other chapters of the volume were not searched. The nine discrepancies flagged (the fluid boluses that do not coincide; the Gram-negatives and the survival of the dysmature without a denominator; the reference to the wrong figure; the units in °F; the sentence on septic joints; the 27% of clostridiosis; the age thresholds different from C-07; the dates and citations of the record) were verified by the editorial team on the text and not resolved with the primary papers.
