Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Titolo originale

«Lactation and Neonatal Care»

Original title

«Lactation and Neonatal Care»

Italian title (editorial translation): «Lattazione e cura del neonato».

⚠️ This is a chapter of a clinical textbook, not a study, and part of what it contains is the authors' declared experience («Our recommendation», «we have not seen any problems», «in our experience»): the first person plural appears six times in the body of the text, and many other statements are attributed to «some practitioners» or «have been suggested» without a source. No number in this card is an original result of the chapter: every number is reported, and where the text refers to someone else's work the card says so. The second warning concerns the doses and volumes: the chapter gives them for colostrum, plasma, vitamin D3 and enemas, and almost all of them are the authors' experience or extrapolation from other species. They are reported in a dedicated table, with an indication of how much has been measured in the camelid. A third warning concerns internal consistency: the chapter contains a few arithmetic and unit discrepancies, listed under Limitations, which the editorial team verified on the text and did not resolve.

  • Full text read in its entirety: yes. Read on 11/10/2026 from the Europe PMC full-text service (version deposited in PubMed Central, about 40,000 characters of body): all sections, the three tables (parameters of the normal cria; birth weight in an alpaca herd; congenital defects with a possible genetic basis), the captions of the twelve figures and the 56 bibliographic entries. The cited sources were not read: everything this card attributes to a cited work it attributes through the chapter.

Venue status (verified on 11/10/2026): publisher Elsevier BV; it is not a journal and has no ISSN. PubMed: no (no PMID). DOAJ: no (query by title, zero records). OpenAlex: the source is classified as «Elsevier eBooks», a book platform that is not open access, with 1,208,620 indexed works, a number that tells the vastness of the container and not the relevance of the chapter; the article nevertheless appears with a free «green» copy in the PubMed Central repository.

Measurable impact of the single chapter: 14 citations according to OpenAlex, 10 according to Crossref, 0 according to Europe PMC, all as of 11/10/2026. The three sources do not coincide because they count different sets of citing works; the card reports the three numbers and does not choose.

Licence of the original article: Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc., all rights reserved, with the additional permission that accompanies the deposited text: Elsevier grants that research linked to its COVID-19 resource centre is available in PubMed Central «with rights for unrestricted research re-use and analyses in any form or by any means with acknowledgement of the original source», «for as long as the COVID-19 resource centre remains active». It is not a Creative Commons licence: it is a publisher's permission, conditional on the continued existence of that resource centre. Read on the deposited text on 11/10/2026. It allows the text to be read in order to write a card of our own; it does not authorize this card to republish tables or figures. This card may reproduce: factual data reworded and short quotations in quotation marks. No tables, no figures: the three tables are described in words and only a few of their values are recalled.

Specie e soggetti

Nessun soggetto proprio.

Species and subjects

No subjects of its own. The chapter concerns llamas and alpacas, from parturition to weaning. The data reported come from different sources: mortality in the first semester from a survey in the United Kingdom on llamas and alpacas; mortality before weaning «in South America» from a 1975 paper; birth weight and survival from alpacas raised under South American conditions; a table of 113 alpaca crias from a herd in the United States (the authors' own data, in congress proceedings); milk composition from llamas and alpacas, where for provenance the card relies on the titles of the references, because the text does not say it (llamas: United States and Argentina; alpacas: two regions of Chile, which is declared in the text). For colostrum and for vaccination the text borrows indications declaredly from other species («extrapolated from other species») and recalls goat and bovine colostrum as substitutes; the card flags it where the text does.

Study type and level of evidence

Clinical textbook chapter, narrative in approach, with no declared search strategy and no stated objectives: the text starts from mortality data and proceeds by sections (prenatal care, postnatal care, normal behavior, passive transfer, prophylaxis, high-risk neonates, emergencies in the first 24 hours, congenital defects, anatomy and physiology of the mammary gland).

Level of evidence: narrative review of a teaching text, therefore a structured opinion of a group of clinicians on a literature that the reader cannot reconstruct. The body is made of three materials that the card keeps distinct: (a) published data on the camelid, often small series, congress proceedings and other textbooks; (b) extrapolated indications from other species, in particular for the quantities of colostrum; (c) the authors' experience, in the first person.

Consequence for the reader. The selection of the works is not reproducible: this card summarizes the reading of a group of authors, not the state of the literature. Doses and thresholds are cited as «the chapter reports». Where the primary work is indicated by the text, the card names it and refers to it.

Relevant reporting standard: for narrative reviews there is no reporting guideline; the SANRA quality scale is used (chapter 14 §4.2), applied here to a book chapter, with the caution that comes from a format not designed for that scale. The authors declare no standard. The score compiled by the editorial team, item by item, is in the assessment box: 5/12.

In breve

In brief

The chapter reconstructs the care of the cria from pregnancy to the first weeks and closes with lactation. It opens with mortality: in the United Kingdom 4-11% of the deaths of llamas and 17-33% of those of alpacas occur in the first six months of life, largely in the first week; in South America mortality before weaning can reach 50%. It then gives the rules of care: watch the female at the end of pregnancy, disinfect the cord, expect a cria to stand and nurse within three hours, and measure IgG between 24 and 36 hours of life. The central issue is the passive transfer of immunity: the camelid placenta does not let immunoglobulins through, the cria is born hypogammaglobulinemic and depends on colostrum, which is well absorbed for only a few hours. There follow the prophylaxis of the neonate, the signs of the premature and dysmature cria, the emergencies of the first 24 hours (sepsis, congenital defects, meconium and urine retention, hypothermia) and, in the last part, the anatomy of the mammary gland, and the production and composition of llama and alpaca milk. The authors report that the indications on the quantities of colostrum are extrapolated from other species, and part of the clinical numbers is their own experience.

Why this study matters

It puts colostrum, its measurement and the mammary gland in the same chapter. For a veterinarian attending an alpaca birth it collects in a single reading the expected time to stand and nurse, the sequence of replacement colostrum, the IgG thresholds with four methods, prophylaxis and the physiology of lactation, which in the English-language literature is, according to the authors themselves, «scarce».

It declares where the data are lacking. The chapter writes that research on colostrogenesis in camelids is scarce («a relative paucity of research»), that powdered colostrum supplements «have not been critically evaluated in camelids», that the use of the bovine coronavirus vaccine in pregnant females to increase the protection of colostrum «has not been fully investigated», that fescue agalactia has been blamed but is «not scientifically verified». These are four points where the authors renounce a statement.

It gives an order of magnitude to lactation. Initial production, peak at about three weeks, weekly decline, milk composition of llamas and alpacas in two regions: these are the few numbers on the mammary gland available on a single page, with their limits (no time unit, no denominator), which the card flags.

It is also a source of transcription errors to be avoided. The same chapter writes an IgG threshold in mg/dL and, in the following sentence, in «mg/mL»; it gives a plasma dose per kilogram and a volume in millilitres that cannot be reconciled; it indicates goat colostrum and bovine colostrum both as «second choice». Whoever cites the chapter without checking carries these points along.

Obiettivo

Gli autori non dichiarano un obiettivo. Il capitolo si apre con i dati di mortalità e con la frase «Neonatal care and early recognition and treatment of neonatal ailments are of the utmost importance to reduce these losses», che è la sola giustificazione esplicita.

Objective

The authors declare no objective. The chapter opens with the mortality data and with the sentence «Neonatal care and early recognition and treatment of neonatal ailments are of the utmost importance to reduce these losses», which is the only explicit justification.

Clinical question (editorial formulation; the PICO format does not apply to a descriptive review): in a female llama or alpaca at the end of pregnancy and in her cria in the first weeks [P], which measures of care, prophylaxis and colostrum replacement do the authors indicate, with which thresholds for checking passive transfer [outcome], and what is known about the production and composition of milk?

Disegno dello studio

Study design

A 12-page chapter (pp. 286-297), 56 references, three tables and twelve figures. Structure: prenatal and postnatal care; normal behavior of the cria; assessment of passive transfer; prophylaxis; identification of high-risk neonates; emergencies in the first 24 hours (sepsis, failure of passive transfer, orphan cria, congenital defects, meconium and urine retention, umbilical abnormalities, exposure); lactation (anatomy, development of the mammary gland, milk production and composition).

⚠️ Not verifiable and therefore not asserted: the existence of a criterion for choosing the works (absent, as far as the text says), the age of some data (the references range from 1952 to 2011) and the settings of some observations by the authors.

Metodi / Protocollo

Methods / Protocol

The chapter has no methods. No database, no search string, no range of years, no language, no inclusion criterion. The sources comprise articles, five entries that are congress proceedings or abstracts (among them a work by the first author), textbooks and textbook chapters, and two monographs (a Peruvian one from 1989 on congenital defects of the alpaca and one from 2002 on the reproduction of South American camelids); they cannot be told apart in the body of the text except by their reference number.

Doses. The chapter contains volumes, doses and concentrations for colostrum, plasma, vitamin D3, enemas, antiseptics for the cord and a milk additive. They are reported in the table that follows, each with dose, route, species and source, and with an indication of how much has been measured in the camelid. They are all numbers from authors who declare that they report their own practice, extrapolate from other species or cite a work: none comes from a clinical trial on the cria conducted in this chapter. For vaccination the text gives no doses: it declares that, unlike some colleagues who prefer not to vaccinate pregnant females, the authors «have not seen any problems» with the vaccine against C. perfringens types C and D and C. tetani in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy (the authors' experience), that breeders give by mouth in the first 24 hours a bovine modified live vaccine against coronavirus («reported to be effective», with a reference to a single genomic analysis of the alpaca coronavirus; abortion has been reported after parenteral use) and that crias are routinely tested for BVDV by PCR in North America. For antibiotic combinations in sepsis the text lists combinations (enrofloxacin with procaine penicillin G, enrofloxacin with ceftiofur, ceftiofur with gentamicin) without a dose.

Risultati principali

Al rifrattometro, solidi totali sotto 4,5 g/dL fanno sospettare il fallimento, oltre 5,5 g/dL sono compatibili con un buon trasferimento (voce 14), ma «others have found that this test is not very accurate» (voce 17).

  • Vitamine e minerali: vitamine A, D, E e selenio dove servono.

«Poor IgG status of the newborn is the most important risk factor for neonatal infectious diseases.»

«Failure of passive transfer is a major cause of neonatal mortality in camelids.»

«Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment of neonatal disease, particularly infections, results in greater positive outcome.»

Main results

(everything that follows is «the chapter reports»; the primary sources were not read)

Mortality and prenatal care

  • Mortality (reference 1, survey in the United Kingdom): 4-11% of the deaths of llamas and 17-33% of the deaths of alpacas occur in the first 6 months of life, and a high share in the first week. In South America mortality before weaning can reach 50%, attributed mainly to Clostridium perfringens types A and C (reference 2, a 1975 paper). The chapter does not give the denominators of the two series.
  • Pregnancy: over 80% of fetal growth occurs in the last trimester. A pregnancy beyond 370 days is associated, «in our experience», with dysmaturity and neonatal deaths in the first 3 days (the authors' experience, no number).
  • Preparation for parturition: observe the female in the last week, in a clean paddock or a barn easy to watch, without changing her social organization or moving her in the first stage of labor.

The normal cria

  • First minutes: fetal cortisol and the catecholamine surge help adaptation and, according to the text, can mask a problem: the neonate looks normal right after birth while having a physiological impairment. An infection acquired in utero should be suspected if plasma fibrinogen is high in the first 12-24 hours, if the placenta is abnormal or if the dam has a discharge at parturition.
  • Normal parameters (table of the chapter, not reproduced; no source): birth weight 5-11 kg in the alpaca and 9-18 kg in the llama; temperature 37.7-38.9 °C; pulse 60-100/minute; respiratory rate 10-30/minute; standing in 30 minutes (10-120) and at the udder in 45 minutes (20-180); meconium and urine within 18 hours; daily gain in the first 3 months 0.2-0.4 kg (alpaca) and 0.4-0.8 kg (llama).
  • Birth weight in a herd (second table, not reproduced; source: the authors' congress proceedings, 2008): 113 alpaca crias from a US herd (49 females, 64 males), mean 7.98 kg, standard deviation 1.18, minimum 3.76 kg, maximum 11.25 kg. In alpacas raised under South American conditions birth weight increases with the age of the dam, falls after 11 years and a low weight is associated with more neonatal deaths (reference 8, a 2009 paper). The chapter reports that in the first 24 hours the cria normally loses 120-250 g (alpaca) or 250-500 g (llama) and that the grazing South American alpaca gains on average 195 g per day. The cria should be weighed every day for 2 weeks and then every other week.
  • Cord and first contact: disinfection of the cord according to the table of doses; dam-cria bond with nose-to-nose touching and humming; if the cria is not standing and nursing within 3 hours, «a problem should be suspected».

Passive transfer of immunity

  • Placenta and colostrum: the epitheliochorial microcotyledonary placenta does not let immunoglobulins through (reference 9); the cria is born hypogammaglobulinemic. Intestinal absorption of IgG is possible for a short time and drops sharply after 18 hours of life. IgG in the mammary secretion is 8-10 times that of serum about 3 weeks before parturition (reference 11), but camelids do not selectively transfer IgG1 from serum to the mammary gland before parturition; the concentration falls quickly after parturition.
  • Normal IgG: under normal conditions the serum IgG of the cria exceeds 2,000 mg/dL at 24 hours (no source). The chapter says that failure of passive transfer is a main risk factor and that between farms the IgG of healthy neonates differ greatly, so that on some a cria with insufficient transfer remains healthy.
  • Measurement: the IgG peak is between 24 and 48 hours, so the ideal sampling is between 24 and 36 hours. Methods listed: serum radial immunodiffusion (SRID), total solids by refractometer, total protein, globulins, sodium sulfite turbidity test. For the text SRID is the reference method in the alpaca and the llama (references 14-16), but it is species-specific and does not hold if non-camelid colostrum was given. With the plates of the manufacturer cited, above 800 mg/dL is adequate and below 400 mg/dL indicates failure; but «most studies consider 1000 mg/mL» the adequate minimum value (see Limitations: units). By refractometer, total solids below 4.5 g/dL raise the suspicion of failure, above 5.5 g/dL are compatible with good transfer (reference 14), but «others have found that this test is not very accurate» (reference 17). Total protein and globulins should be at least 5.5 g/dL and 2 g/dL, with the caveat that they rise falsely in dehydration; commercial turbidity tests are less sensitive than SRID.
  • When to give colostrum: immediately in cases of agalactia or mastitis, or if the cria has not been seen nursing within 2 hours of birth. Colostrum of the same camelid, as an alternative goat, then bovine, free of BVDV, paratuberculosis and brucellosis; powdered supplements have not been evaluated in the camelid. Quantity and modes are in the table of doses. Repeated orogastric intubation can cause esophagitis (reference 13).
  • Causes of failed intake: from the dam (poor colostrogenesis, pain or stress; agalactia frequent in young females or after hormonal treatments in pregnancy; mammary edema, mastitis, pain after dystocia or cesarean) and from the cria (weakness, cleft palate, swollen tongue, abnormal teat conformation).
  • Plasma: in case of failure hyperimmune warm plasma is given (doses in the table); crias that are weak or do not nurse should receive colostrum anyway after the plasma.

Prophylaxis

  • Agents of the first days: the chapter writes that the most common infections in the first days are «clostridial diseases caused by Escherichia coli and coronavirus», a sentence that attributes the clostridium to E. coli (see Limitations). C. perfringens type A has caused severe losses in some populations (references 18-19). Protection comes from the colostrum of a vaccinated dam; clostridial antitoxin if transfer is insufficient; autologous vaccines may reduce the effects of type A.
  • Vitamins and minerals: vitamins A, D, E and selenium where needed. Crias without vitamin D grow less in winter and, if born in winter, may show rickets (reference 21).
  • BVDV: in North America it is routine to test all crias by PCR at birth in order to isolate persistently infected ones (references 23-25).

High-risk neonates and the first 24 hours

  • Risk factors: dams with previous problems, prematurity, dystocia, prolonged obstetric manipulation, cesarean section, placentitis, premature placental separation, prolonged pregnancy.
  • Premature cria: weight more than 20% below the farm average, thick epidermal membrane adherent to the footpads and the mucocutaneous junctions, «floppy» syndrome (does not rise, does not hold the head up, floppy ears), silky coat, limbs hyperextended at the carpus and fetlock, incisors not erupted, absent or poor suckling. The dysmature cria from a pregnancy beyond 370 days has similar characteristics but normal body development.
  • Sepsis: suspected above all in the first 10 days; in one study the median age at presentation was 2 days (reference 6, a 2007 paper). Hypopyon, uveitis or conjunctivitis indicate early septicemia. Most common isolates: E. coli, Enterococcus, Listeria monocytogenes, Citrobacter. The outcome of medical therapy is generally favorable if there is no gastrointestinal or nervous system involvement. Anemia: look for Mycoplasma haemolamae (reference 27, description of a case in a 4-day-old cria).
  • Orphan cria: goat or cow milk; for long-term use goat milk or its replacers are preferable. Human contact, especially with males, should be limited to avoid the «berserk» syndrome.
  • Congenital defects: more frequent, according to the text, than in other domestic animals. The most common and potentially lethal: choanal atresia, atresia ani or coli, atresia vulvi, severe cardiac and urinary defects. The most common cardiac defect is ventricular septal defect. Angular limb deformities dominate among the skeletal ones (the most frequent is carpus valgus; above 10 degrees surgical correction is needed). Polydactyly of the alpaca is presumed to be hereditary, autosomal dominant. For choanal atresia surgical correction has been attempted, but the text invites considering euthanasia because of the high rate of complications. The authors ask for necropsy of every stillborn and neonatal death.
  • Meconium retention: meconium is normally passed within 18-24 hours of birth and in the active cria within 6 hours of the first feeding; initial treatment is in the table; repeated enemas can irritate the mucosa and cause rectal prolapse; the main differential diagnosis is atresia ani. The text reports severe electrolyte disturbances after the inadvertent transvaginal administration of phosphate enemas (reference 48, two crias).
  • Other emergencies: urine retention (from congenital defects: urethral aplasia with bladder rupture in the male, atresia vulvi in the female); umbilical abnormalities (hernias under 3 cm often resolve by themselves or with bandaging; patent urachus is less frequent than in other species); hypothermia and depression from exposure or starvation, «probably the most common acquired problems» in the first 24 hours.

Lactation

  • Mammary gland: inguinal site, difficult to see in non-lactating females; examination requires lateral recumbency or the hind leg flexed and raised. Macroscopic differentiation is visible in the fetus at about 4 months of gestation; the greatest growth is in the last month and in the last 2-3 weeks the gland is 5-6 times larger than at the beginning.
  • Abnormalities: supernumerary teats (polythelia) with an incidence of 17% in llamas and 6% in alpacas; absence of teats (athelia) in up to 0.9% of alpacas. The chapter gives neither the denominators of these incidences nor a specific source.
  • Milk production: initial about 1,600 mL in the alpaca and 2,000 mL in the llama; peak at about 3 weeks after parturition, 2,325 ± 480 mL in the llama and 1,938 ± 290 mL in the alpaca (for the peak, reference 51, a 2002 monograph); then a decline of 9% per week. The text gives no time unit for the volumes. Production increases with the age of the dam; weaning is normally at 4-6 months; production dries up rapidly after weaning or loss of the cria. The curve resembles that of cattle.
  • Lactating dam (alpaca, South American grazing conditions, a single study): weight and body condition little changed; plasma urea nitrogen and creatinine lower in lactation than at the end of pregnancy; no change in non-esterified fatty acids; chloride falling and calcium rising; the authors of that work conclude that metabolic adjustment is completed in the first or second week. Lactational anestrus is rare, but the follicular wave and the corpus luteum may be affected by thinness.
  • Milk composition: in the llama, lactose 6.5% and fat 2.7% (more lactose and less fat than cattle); other studies report fat of 4-4.5%; energy 70 kcal/100 g, lower than domestic ruminants; composition does not vary with stage and number of lactation; more calcium, less sodium, chloride and potassium; trace elements similar to ruminants. In the alpaca (two regions of Chile: Andean high plateau, AHP, and Patagonia, P) mean milk fat was 3.8 ± 0.6 (AHP) and 2.6 ± 0.5 (P) and lactose 4.4 ± 0.5 (AHP) and 5.2 ± 0.5 (P); the units are not stated in the text; the difference is attributed by the authors of that work to pasture quality and the energy expenditure of walking.

Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)

«Poor IgG status of the newborn is the most important risk factor for neonatal infectious diseases.» — It is a statement of the authors, without numbers at the point where it appears; the references of the neighboring sentences (references 14-16) are studies on IgG measurement.

«Failure of passive transfer is a major cause of neonatal mortality in camelids.» — It refers to three works (references 10, 15, 16); the chapter does not report the mortality shares of those works.

«Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment of neonatal disease, particularly infections, results in greater positive outcome.» — A general principle, with a single reference (reference 6, a series of 21 cases of sepsis).

Implicazioni cliniche

Clinical implications

For the Italian veterinarian who follows an alpaca or llama farm, and for the association that keeps them in custody.

  1. A cria that does not nurse within three hours should be looked at, not waited for. This is the indication of the chapter; the text gives two different times, 3 hours to suspect the problem and 2 hours to start colostrum, and the card reports both. Replacement colostrum, if needed, should be given before the gut stops absorbing (after 18 hours the decline is strong).
  2. The best replacement colostrum is that of the same species; as an alternative that of the goat, then of cattle. The chapter writes «second choice» both for the goat and for cattle; the card does not resolve it. Non-camelid colostrum must come from animals free of BVDV, paratuberculosis and brucellosis, and with non-camelid colostrum the species-specific SRID does not hold.
  3. IgG thresholds depend on the method, and the chapter writes them with two units. The unit of the adequacy value «1000 mg/mL» of the text cannot be established by the editorial team; if it were mg/dL, 1,000 mg/dL would equal 10 g/L, the threshold that card CRL-C-02 discusses as a threshold of suspicion and not a verdict; card CRL-C-02 also shows that the same serum gives different values with different kits. Whoever uses the thresholds of the chapter must write the method next to the number.
  4. The quantities of colostrum and plasma in the chapter cannot be recalculated by themselves. The volume per meal («60-90 mL every 2 hours») and the volume of plasma («300-500 mL») do not agree with the percentages and the mg/kg of the text (see Limitations); the veterinarian who uses them must start from the weight of the cria and the percentage, not from the typical volume.
  5. Vitamin D3 is dosed in international units per kilogram, and the unit must be written. The chapter gives 1,000 IU/kg subcutaneously in late autumn and midwinter for the cria; card CRL-B-02 reports a unit-of-measure error with a fatal outcome in three crias. The chapter does not say where the cited work was done; card CRL-B-02 reports it as conducted in South Australia.
  6. Weight is a tool. Weighing every day for two weeks and then every other week is, for the authors, the way to judge whether the milk is enough; the cria normally loses a few hundred grams in the first 24 hours, and the normal loss (120-250 g in the alpaca, 250-500 g in the llama) is in the text.
  7. A congenital defect should be looked for early and necropsy should be requested. The authors ask for necropsy of stillborn and neonatal deaths, because without a diagnosis the genetic component cannot be understood; the text also says that some respiratory defects are mistaken by owners for choanal atresia.
  8. The lactation of the alpaca is less documented than the table of numbers suggests. The milk volumes have no time unit, the composition data come from few works and from two regions of Chile, and production dries up early after weaning or loss of the cria, as the text says.
  9. Nothing here concerns Italy. The chapter contains no data from Italian or European farms: the studies on the cria come from the United States, the United Kingdom, South America and Australia.

Limiti

Dichiarati dagli autori.

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 12/10/2026

Limitations

Declared by the authors. The chapter has no limitations section; however, it declares in several places that data are lacking: the English literature on the mammary gland and lactation is scarce; research on colostrogenesis is poor; powdered colostrum supplements have not been evaluated in the camelid; the use of bovine coronavirus vaccines in pregnant females has not been studied; fescue agalactia has not been verified; the quantities of colostrum are extrapolated from other species.

Added by the editorial team.

  • No declared literature search: the selection of the works is not reproducible.
  • The dosage is experience or extrapolation. The table of doses says, row by row, how much it is; a single dose (vitamin D3) has, in the title of the cited work, a counterpart in the alpaca, and that work was not read.
  • Unpublished or hardly reconstructible data: the table of birth weights comes from congress proceedings of the same authors; three percentages of abnormalities (17%, 6%, 0.9%) have neither a specific source nor a denominator; the milk volumes have no time unit.
  • Case-mix and geography: the sources are North American, South American, British and Australian; for continental Europe there is nothing.
  • A repetition in a table: the list of congenital defects reports choanal atresia twice.
  • Twelve years of distance: the chapter is from 2013-2014; it was not searched, and it is therefore not excluded, whether after then the literature on passive transfer, colostrum and lactation of camelids has modified the indications (among them those on the measurement of IgG, card CRL-C-02).
  • Cited sources not read: everything the card says of a cited work it says through the chapter.

Discrepancies verified by the editorial team on the text and not resolved. They are observations of the editorial team, not ascertained errors of the authors: where the chapter may have a misprint, the card says so and does not correct it.

  1. Unit of the IgG threshold. The text writes «800 mg/dL» and «400 mg/dL» for the SRID plates and then «1000 mg/mL» as the adequate minimum for most studies; 1000 mg/mL would be 1,000 g/L, impossible for a serum. The editorial team does not know which unit the authors intended: it reports the quantity as written and flags the inconsistency. There also remain two adequacy thresholds (800 and 1,000 mg/dL) and no indication for the 400-800 mg/dL interval.
  2. Colostrum: percentage and volume. 10% of weight in 12 hours, in meals every 2 hours (6 meals), for the birth weights of the same table (5-11 kg in the alpaca, 9-18 kg in the llama) gives 500-1,100 mL for the alpaca and 900-1,800 mL for the llama in the 12 hours, that is about 83-183 mL and 150-300 mL per meal; the volume «60-90 mL every 2 hours» gives 360-540 mL in 12 hours, that is 10% of a cria of 3.6-5.4 kg, largely below the minimum of 5 kg. Counting also the meal at time zero (7 meals) one obtains 71-157 mL for the alpaca, and the 60-90 mL interval overlaps only the lightest alpaca crias.
  3. Plasma: mL/kg and total volume. With 15-25 mL/kg an alpaca cria of 5-11 kg receives 75-275 mL, and a llama cria of 9-18 kg receives 135-450 mL; the volumes indicated, 300 mL (alpaca) and 500 mL (llama), exceed those obtained from the dose per kilogram over the whole range of weights of the chapter's table for the alpaca (at 11 kg, 300 mL is about 27 mL/kg) and for the llama (at 18 kg, 500 mL is about 28 mL/kg).
  4. Meconium. The table of normal values writes «less than 18 hours» (with a note: about 8 hours after a normal feeding); the text writes «within 18-24 hours» of birth and, in the active cria, «within 6 hours» of the first feeding. These are four different numbers for the same event.
  5. Time threshold for acting on colostrum. A problem is suspected if the cria is not standing and nursing within 3 hours; colostrum should be given if the cria has not been seen nursing within 2 hours. The table of normal values gives a median time to the udder of 45 minutes, with a range that reaches 180 minutes.
  6. Umbilical hernia. Small hernias «under 2 cm» resolve spontaneously (section on abdominal abnormalities); hernias «under 3 cm» resolve by themselves or with the belt (section on umbilical abnormalities). The two thresholds are not reconciled.
  7. Mean birth weight. The table of 113 crias gives means of 7.76 kg (49 females) and 8.12 kg (64 males) and an overall mean of 7.98 kg; the weighted mean of the two subgroups is 7.96 kg. The difference is 0.02 kg, larger than rounding. The minimum observed in the 113 alpacas (3.76 kg) is moreover below the lower end of the reference range of the first table (5 kg).
  8. Daily gain. The first table indicates 0.2-0.4 kg per day in the alpaca in the first 3 months; the text reports a mean of 195 g per day in the South American grazing alpaca, which is below the lower end; the text does not reconcile them.
  9. Replacement colostrum. Goat colostrum is «second choice» after the colostrum of the same species, and a few lines later bovine colostrum is also «second choice».
  10. Clostridia. South American mortality before weaning is attributed to C. perfringens types A and C; further on the only cases with references are of type A, and the vaccine indicated is against types C and D. A sentence on the first days of life also writes that the most common infections are «clostridial diseases caused by Escherichia coli and coronavirus», which attributes the clostridium to E. coli: the editorial team does not know which list the authors intended.
  11. Metadata of the record. Year 2013 (deposit date, 6 December 2013, and OpenAlex) against 2014 (Crossref and copyright); 14 citations (OpenAlex), 10 (Crossref), 0 (Europe PMC).
  12. Normal IgG and threshold. The text writes that the serum IgG of the cria are «normally above 2,000 mg/dL» at 24 hours and that the adequacy threshold is 800-1,000 mg/dL; the first number has no source.

Funding: not declared in the text. No funder in the Crossref record or in the Europe PMC one (verified on 11/10/2026).

Conflicts of interest: not declared in the text (no declaration found in the deposited text). The text names a manufacturer of SRID plates; the card does not report the brand.

What is missing with respect to the reporting standard (SANRA). The description of the literature search (item 3) and the formulation of the aims (item 2: the chapter has an introduction on mortality, but no objective) are missing altogether. Partial: referencing (item 4, for the congress sources and the doses without a source), scientific reasoning (item 5, for the numbers without a source and the unit inconsistencies) and presentation of the data (item 6, for the missing denominators and units). Outside SANRA but within the rules of the series: funding and conflicts not declared, no limitations section.

◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 12/10/2026

A chapter that puts the care of the cria and lactation in order, and that whoever cites it must reread with a calculator in hand.

The merit of the chapter is its ordered breadth: from pregnancy to the mammary gland, through colostrum, its measurement, prophylaxis and congenital defects, all in twelve pages that a field veterinarian can use as a memo. In our series it earns one more point because it says clearly where the data are lacking: colostrogenesis in camelids is little studied, powdered colostrum supplements are not evaluated, the bovine coronavirus vaccine in pregnant females is not proven, and the quantities of colostrum are, by the authors' admission, extrapolated from other species.

Now the part that makes us reflect as an editorial team: the units and the sums. We redid the chapter's numbers by hand and twelve points do not add up (listed under Limitations). The three that weigh most in practice are these. The IgG threshold «1000 mg/mL» is written one line after thresholds in mg/dL: if a reader copies the number without the unit, he uses it as if it were another quantity. The colostrum volume «60-90 mL every 2 hours» corresponds to 10% of the weight of a cria of 3.6-5.4 kg, largely below the minimum of 5 kg that the table of normal values gives for the alpaca. And the plasma volume «300-500 mL» exceeds, for every weight of the same table, what is obtained from the 15-25 mL/kg of the preceding paragraph. We do not say that the authors made a mistake: we say that the reader cannot know which of the two forms (the percentage or the volume) they intended, and that both are on the page. For this reason the card reports both forms and does not choose one.

The comparison with the review on the sick cria (C-07) is useful. That one deals with the cria that has already collapsed, with a table of doses of which nine rows out of eleven have no counterpart in the camelid; this one deals with the cria before it collapses (colostrum, IgG checks, prophylaxis) and its table of doses has the same character: a single dose, vitamin D3, refers to a work on the alpaca. Read together, the two texts say that the practice of camelid neonatology rests more on experience than on evidence, which is why each of our cards repeats the distinction. On the measurement of IgG, card C-02 adds what the chapter does not say: the same threshold gives different classifications with different kits, for 1-17% of the samples of that study. Card B-02 adds that the dose of vitamin D3 per kilogram is written with the unit next to it.

A sentence for whoever has a lactating female. The milk numbers (initial volume, peak at about three weeks, 9% weekly decline, fat and lactose) are the few that exist in the text, and they come from few works, without time units and without denominators; the difference between the two Chilean regions recalls that composition depends on pasture, and should not be transported to Europe without caution. There is no number concerning Italy.

SANRA itemScoreReason
1 · Importance2/2It opens with mortality: 4-11% of the deaths of llamas and 17-33% of those of alpacas in the first 6 months in the United Kingdom, up to 50% in South America before weaning.
2 · Aims and questions0/2No objective formulated; a generic justification on early care remains.
3 · Description of the literature search0/2Absent altogether.
4 · Referencing1/256 references, partly specific and partly congress proceedings; doses, shares of abnormalities and «normal» values without a source.
5 · Scientific reasoning1/2It sometimes distinguishes the extrapolated from the unverified, and admits the gaps; but it contains unit and calculation inconsistencies that are not discussed, and does not treat opposing positions.
6 · Presentation of outcome data1/2Numbers with the species almost always; denominators and time units often absent (polythelia, milk volumes), one table with a clear denominator (113 crias).

AxisRatingReason
A · Scientific quality★★☆☆☆SANRA 5/12, with zero on the literature search and on the aims. Ceiling of chapter 14 §11: a narrative review does not reach five stars on this axis.
B · Clinical usefulness★★★☆☆A useful sequence of times, thresholds and prophylaxis for whoever follows a birth or a lactation, with a described procedure for colostrum and IgG measurement. It does not rise to four because the dose and volume numbers are almost all experience or extrapolation and some do not agree with each other; within the constraint B ≤ A + 2.
C · Didactic value★★★★☆An ordered teaching text, from pregnancy to the mammary gland, which declares many gaps. It does not reach five because it contains unit inconsistencies that a student might copy, and because the sources are in part from congresses.
D · Relevance for the species★★★★☆A chapter entirely devoted to llamas and alpacas, with data on both. Transferability to Italy is good for the sequence of care and for the meaning of passive transfer; more uncertain for the thresholds and for the composition of milk. It does not rise to five because the sources are not European and because for some quantities the text extrapolates from other species.

No overall grade, by construction. A = 2, C = 4 and D = 4 is the signature of a good teaching chapter: ordered as a guide, fragile as a source of numbers.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that a textbook chapter of 2013-2014, written by four authors, reports for the llama and alpaca cria that the placenta does not let immunoglobulins through, that the cria depends on colostrum absorbed in the first hours (with a strong decline after 18 hours), that IgG should be checked between 24 and 36 hours with a method whose name must be written, that the milk peak occurs at about 3 weeks after parturition and that the quantities of colostrum are, by the authors' admission, extrapolated from other species.

It cannot be concluded that the colostrum and plasma volumes of the chapter are proven in the cria, because the percentage of weight and the volume indicated do not coincide; nor that the IgG threshold is 1,000 mg/dL, because the text writes it with another unit; nor that the milk volumes are daily, because the text gives no time unit. Nothing about Italy can be drawn from here.

Messaggi da portare a casa

Take-home messages

  1. A textbook chapter is cited with its subject. Every number in this card is «the chapter reports»; the primary works were not read.
  2. The cria is born without immunoglobulins (epitheliochorial placenta), and absorbs them from colostrum mainly in the first hours; after 18 hours absorption falls greatly. If it does not nurse within 3 hours, or has not been seen nursing within 2, one intervenes.
  3. The best replacement colostrum is that of the same species. As an alternative goat or bovine, free of BVDV, paratuberculosis and brucellosis; the quantities of the chapter (10% of weight in 12 hours) are extrapolated from other species, and the typical volume indicated does not coincide with the percentage.
  4. IgG are measured between 24 and 36 hours, and the method must be written next to the number. SRID is the reference method but does not hold with non-camelid colostrum; by refractometer total solids below 4.5 g/dL raise the suspicion of failure.
  5. The threshold «1000 mg/mL» of the text has an uncertain unit. The thresholds in mg/dL of the neighboring paragraph are 800 and 400; the card does not resolve it.
  6. Plasma is given in two forms (15-25 mL/kg and 300-500 mL) that do not coincide: the dose per kilogram is calculated from the weight.
  7. Vitamin D3 is indicated at 1,000 IU/kg subcutaneously in late autumn and midwinter; the unit must be written every time.
  8. Milk: initial production about 1,600 mL (alpaca) and 2,000 mL (llama), peak at 3 weeks, 9% weekly decline; with no time unit. Fat in alpaca milk 3.8 and 2.6 according to the Chilean region.
