Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes
- AQualità scientifica3/5
- BUtilità clinica3/5
- CValore didattico4/5
- DRilevanza per la specie4/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

⚠️ The data do not come from measurements on the animals but from the records of breeders who answered a questionnaire. The date of the last mating, the date of birth, the weight of the cria, dystocia and stillbirth are those the breeder wrote down; no veterinary report was collected for the individual cases. Moreover, the farms were chosen because they kept good records (the authors call this «good student effect»). The second warning concerns the numbers: in this article five figures do not add up between one section and another or with their own arithmetic (stillbirth rate, caesarean rate, share of breeders included, total of pregnancies in the table of farms, p value for maternal age in the abstract). They are reported in the fields Main results and Limitations, and summarized in the commentary.

Specie e soggetti
Species and subjects
Alpaca (Vicugna pacos), pregnant females and born cria, on 48 farms in 13 countries of both hemispheres. 7,049 pregnancies recorded between 2002 and 2024 (breeders had to fill in one line for each pregnancy from 2000 onwards). The farms included were those that had expressed interest (97) and had provided the minimum information (48; see the discrepancy on their percentage in Main results). The text we read makes no distinction of breed (Huacaya/Suri).
Where the animals are. According to the table of the work, the northern hemisphere has 40 farms (United Kingdom 14, Belgium 5, France 5, United States 5, Canada 4, Germany 2; Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria and Estonia 1 each) and the southern hemisphere 8 (Australia 6, New Zealand 2). Pregnancies per country range from 16 (Austria) to 2,984 (United Kingdom) in the north, and include 2,410 from Australia and 162 from New Zealand in the south. No Italian farm, no South American farm and no Asian farm: the authors declare it as a limitation for South America and Asia, «where they are originating from». ⚠️ The sum of the rows of the table is not 7,049: see the discrepancy in Main results.
How many animals for each analysis. The number of pregnancies changes with the variable, because the optional fields were often empty: sex of the cria known for 6,815 pregnancies; age of the dam for 3,224; weight of the cria for 2,708; identity of the sire for 2,708 (68 males included, see below); identity of the dam for 627 pregnancies of 76 females; time of birth for 405; lunar phase for 2,535; embryo transfer declared in 129 pregnancies against 1,725 declared natural conceptions; information on viability at birth for 1,663; type of birth (eutocic or dystocic) for 860.
Study type and level of evidence
Retrospective survey of farm records collected with a questionnaire, observational and descriptive-analytical: there is no control group, no assignment of factors, no direct observation by the researchers. Declared aim: to describe the geographical, seasonal, gestational, maternal and paternal factors associated with pregnancy length and cria weight, and to evaluate the effect of these two variables on dystocia and stillbirth.
Level of evidence: retrospective observational study of data declared by breeders, hence a source of hypotheses and reference distributions, not of causes. Its strength is its size, which for this species has no precedent in the literature cited by the authors («the first survey to compile such a large number of alpacas pregnancy records»); its weakness is that each comparison group (sex, age of the dam, embryo transfer, month of birth) is defined on different subsets of very different size, and that farm, country and hemisphere overlap.
Relevant reporting standard: STROBE for observational studies (cross-sectional version, because each pregnancy is a line of a record). The authors declare no standard. The items checked by the editorial team are in the field Limitations.
In breve
In brief
From the records of 48 farms in 13 countries, the authors collect 7,049 alpaca pregnancies and describe their length: median 346 days (range 270-428; coefficient of variation 3.37 %), with half of the pregnancies between 339 and 353 days. Length is one day longer in the northern hemisphere (346 days against 345; p < 0.0001), changes with country and month of birth, depends on the sire (differences of up to 16 days among the 68 males considered) and on the age of the dam (females older than 6 years have a median one day shorter), and does not depend on the sex of the cria or on the identity of the dam. The median cria weight is 7.6 kg (range 3.0-17.7 kg; 2,708 cria), does not correlate with pregnancy length, and is somewhat higher in summer in the north and in cria of dams younger than 6 years. Among the documented births, 63 out of 860 (7.33 %) required intervention by the breeder or the veterinarian; stillborn cria are 71 out of 1,663 (4.27 %) according to the results and 2.7 % according to the discussion. This card declares five discrepancies of the article; none changes the median of 346 days.
Terza ragione: individua dove cercare.
Why this study matters
First reason: it gives a distribution, and for the European alpaca there was none. The classic value of 11.5 months (about 343 days) was derived from small samples (Peru 341.6 days; Australia 343 days, according to the authors) with narrower extremes (325-358 and 316-367 days). A veterinarian who must decide whether a female at 370 days is late or simply in the tail of the distribution now has a median, an interquartile range and a dispersion on 7,049 pregnancies, with a substantial share of European farms.
Second reason: it dissolves some beliefs with a denominator. The sex of the cria does not lengthen the pregnancy (unlike in the horse); the lunar phase does not move births (2,535 records); the identity of the dam does not matter (76 females with more than 7 pregnancies); the weight of the cria is not associated either with length or, in the sample, with dystocia.
Third reason: it points out where to look. The sire, the age of the dam, the month and the country weigh on length, but the article does not explain the mechanism: the authors' hypotheses (melatonin, light, endometrial receptivity after embryo transfer) are declared as to be studied and this card reports them as such.
Fourth reason: the text declares its weaknesses, and we add others. The authors write that the categories «dystocia» and «stillbirth» depend on the breeder's judgment. That five numbers of the article do not add up between one section and another, on the other hand, they do not say: this card declares it, after redoing them.
Obiettivo
Dichiarato dagli autori: «Using a survey collecting worldwide data from alpacas' breeders, this study aims to describe the geographical, seasonal, gestational, maternal and paternal factors associated with PL and CW. The effects of the PL and CW on dystocia and stillbirth were also investigated.»
Objective
Declared by the authors: «Using a survey collecting worldwide data from alpacas' breeders, this study aims to describe the geographical, seasonal, gestational, maternal and paternal factors associated with PL and CW. The effects of the PL and CW on dystocia and stillbirth were also investigated.» (PL, pregnancy length; CW, cria weight at birth.)
Clinical question (editorial wording): in a pregnant alpaca female kept in Europe, within what interval of days from the last mating can parturition be expected, which factors shift this interval, and are the length or the weight of the cria associated with dystocia or stillbirth?
Disegno dello studio
Study design
International survey of breeders' records, circulated through specialized groups on social networks. The interested breeders (97) were contacted to check whether their retrospective records had enough items; those who could not provide at least the location of the farm and the dates of the last mating and of birth were not sent the questionnaire. The form was a spreadsheet with one line per pregnancy from 2000 onwards: four main questions (farm and country, date of the last mating, date of birth) and nine optional ones (weight of the cria, embryo transfer, identity and age of the dam, identity of the sire, sex of the cria, dystocia with possible caesarean, neonatal viability and approximate time of birth, ±1 hour). Where the datum was missing, the breeder ticked «absence of data».
Pregnancy length is therefore calculated, by the way the form is built, from the last mating to birth. ⚠️ Not verifiable and therefore not asserted: the written definition of abortion and of stillbirth, and whether the extremes of 270 and 428 days were checked against the farm record. The complete questionnaire, indicated by the text as supplementary material, was not read.
Metodi / Protocollo
Statistica (descritta dagli autori).
Methods / Protocol
Management of matings (described by the authors, referring to most of the breeders). Receptivity and matings were assessed in paddocks of about 20 square metres by introducing the male to the female, as described in a work of 1995; some breeders assisted the male with intromission. The so-called «spit-off» method was used: the male is introduced in the presence of the female every 7 days over a period of 21-60 days; rejection (spitting or kicking) 7 days after mating is considered a sign that ovulation occurred, and a second rejection at 14 days confirms corpus luteum activity. According to the authors this method allowed the mating date to be recorded precisely. Pregnancy was confirmed with transabdominal ultrasonography after 2-3 months on most farms. This is information reported about the farms, not a protocol imposed by the study.
Statistics (described by the authors). Commercial statistics program (version 9.0); significance at p < 0.05, trend for p < 0.1. Normality with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test; Welch t or Brown-Forsythe ANOVA for normal data, Mann-Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis (with Dunn's test) for the others; chi-square for discontinuous variables. Results as mean ± standard deviation or as median with minimum and maximum. A mixed model with all the variables did not converge, because of the optional fields often being empty and of the collinearity among country, farm and hemisphere; the authors therefore ran least-squares multiple linear regression models (hemisphere + month of birth + sex; country + month + sex; sire + dam; sire + sex; age of the dam + sex) and then single confirmation models. For the sire only the males with more than 10 cria were considered (Brown-Forsythe ANOVA); for the dam only the females with more than 7 pregnancies (Kruskal-Wallis). The dams were split into two classes, ≤ 6 years and > 6 years. Bonferroni correction: ten models on length (threshold q = 0.005) and six on weight (threshold q = 0.0083). Lunar phase: births divided into less and more than 50 % of moonlight, compared with a random distribution with the chi-square test. Weight in the southern hemisphere had too few data for a comparable model, and for weight only one model was run (age of the dam + sex) in the northern hemisphere.
Definitions. Dystocia = need for human intervention (by the breeder or the veterinarian); it is a broad definition, and the authors declare it as such. Caesarean section is included. For viability at birth the text gives no written definition of stillbirth.
Doses. The study does not administer drugs nor report any: no doses, no table of doses.
Ethics and data. Survey without manipulation of animals; consent of the breeders to the use of the data; names of the farms replaced by a number immediately after receipt. Funding: the clinical income of the theriogenology unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Liège. Conflicts of interest: none declared by the authors. Data availability: in the supplementary material of the article (not read).
Risultati principali
- Madre: nessun effetto dell'identità (76 femmine, n = 627).
- Intervento umano in 63 parti su 860 documentati (7,33 %).
Main results
*(the numbers are those of the article, with the species, alpaca, and the denominator; discrepancies are flagged where they appear and summarized in Limitations)*
Who answered
- 97 breeders expressed interest; 48 provided the minimum information, which the text reports as 50.52 %. ⚠️ Discrepancy verified by the editorial team (1): 48 out of 97 is 49.48 %; 50.52 % corresponds to 49 out of 97. The number of farms (48) is confirmed by the table (40 northern, 8 southern); the percentage is wrong or the number is another one.
- 7,049 pregnancies between 2002 and 2024. ⚠️ Discrepancy (2): adding up the rows of the table of farms by country (row by row, without reproducing it) gives 5,428 pregnancies in the northern hemisphere and 2,572 in the southern, in all 8,000, not 7,049; the difference is 951 pregnancies. The text does not explain whether the table also counts records later excluded.
Pregnancy length (alpaca, 7,049 pregnancies, unless otherwise indicated)
- Worldwide median 346 days, range 270-428, coefficient of variation 3.37 %; half of the pregnancies between 339 and 353 days. For the pregnancy of 270 days there is no information on the survival of the cria. From the median and the coefficient of variation alone, and only as an order of magnitude by the editorial team, the standard deviation would be about 11-12 days.
- Sex of the cria (known in 6,815 pregnancies): no effect on length. Sex ratio 0.986 males per female, not influenced by hemisphere or by age of the dam. No twin pregnancy reported.
- Embryo transfer: 129 pregnancies against 1,725 declared natural conceptions; trend towards a longer length (p = 0.0918). The size (about 2 days) is indicated only in the discussion, not in the results.
- Sire: effect on length (p < 0.0001; n = 2,708), with differences of up to 16 days among the 68 males included (those with more than ten cria).
- Dam: no effect of identity (76 females, n = 627). Age recorded for only 3,224 pregnancies: females older than 6 years have a median one day shorter than the younger ones (p = 0.0039).
- Hemisphere: median 346 days in the north against 345 in the south (p < 0.0001); the abstract gives for the two hemispheres the intervals 345.9-346.7 and 344.3-345.1 days without saying what they are. Length also varies between countries of the same hemisphere (p < 0.0001) and with the month of birth (p < 0.0001). In the north 63.61 % of births fall from June to August and the pregnancy is longer when birth occurs in late spring; in the south 60.4 % of births fall between December and February. The figure (not reproduced) shows the monthly medians; the discussion derives from it that in the south births in February-April follow pregnancies 3-5 days shorter than those of September, and cites a difference of up to 12 days between autumn and spring births in New Zealand (a work of 1997, not its own); for the north it says only that pregnancies are shorter when birth is in autumn than in spring and summer, without giving the number in the text.
- Time of birth (405 pregnancies): median 11:30, range from 00:30 to 23:30, no difference between hemispheres; the discussion says that births fall mostly between 10:00 and 13:00. A smaller Australian study, cited, gave a median of 9:00.
- Lunar phase (2,535 records): no difference between periods of low and high moonlight.
Cria weight (alpaca, 2,708 live and stillborn cria)
- Median 7.6 kg, range 3.0-17.7 kg; 75 % under 8.4 kg; the lightest among the survivors 4.4 kg. No declared verification of the two extremes.
- No correlation between pregnancy length and weight.
- Sex: males 7.6 kg against females 7.5 kg; p = 0.0168, above the corrected threshold of 0.0083 that the authors themselves set (the text writes «trend»).
- Age of the dam: dams younger than 6 years 7.8 kg, older than 6 years 7.4 kg (p < 0.0001). The text does not say whether they are means or medians.
- Embryo transfer: no effect on weight.
- Month of birth, in the north only: effect (p < 0.0001), heaviest cria in July, August and September; in the south the data are too few.
- ⚠️ Difference between abstract and text (3): the abstract writes that season and maternal age influence length and weight in the northern hemisphere with «p < 0.0001 for both»; in the results the effect of the age of the dam on length has p = 0.0039.
Birth complications (alpaca)
- Human intervention in 63 births out of 860 documented (7.33 %). Of these 63, four required a caesarean (6.35 % of the 63). Causes reported: abnormal fetal presentation, position or posture, uterine inertia or torsion, feto-maternal disproportion, fetal abnormalities (no numbers per cause).
- ⚠️ Discrepancy (4): the caesarean rate on the whole is written 0.8 % in the results and 0.46 % in the discussion. 4 out of 860 is 0.47 % (0.465 %): 0.8 % is not reproducible.
- The weight of the cria does not differ between dystocic and eutocic births; dystocia tends to follow longer pregnancies (349 against 347 days; p = 0.0798, above 0.05 and above the corrected threshold of 0.005). The sex of the cria is not associated with dystocia.
- Stillbirths: 71 out of 1,663 records with information on viability, that is 4.27 % (71/1,663 = 4.27 %: the calculation holds). No difference between hemispheres or between dams younger and older than 6 years. No difference in weight compared with live cria, but the weight is known for only 10 stillborn. The pregnancy is shorter in stillborn cria: median 339 days against 346 of live ones (p = 0.0069, below the threshold of 0.0083).
- ⚠️ Discrepancy (5), the one flagged by the editorial team at the start of the work: the discussion writes that stillbirths are 2.7 % of cases, against 6 % in the literature. The 2.7 % is not reproducible with any denominator of the text: 71 out of 1,663 gives 4.27 %; 71 out of the 2,708 weighed cria would give 2.6 %. Between the two figures the editorial team does not choose: 4.27 % is the one whose numbers are written out; 2.7 % is the one quoted in the comparison with the literature.
Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)
The explanations that follow are hypotheses of the authors, not tested in this study:
- The role of melatonin (secreted at night, with receptors in the fetuses of seasonal species) and of light, to explain months and seasons; in the horse, blue light on one eye of the mare shortened the pregnancy, and the authors propose studying it in the alpaca.
- A possible delay of endometrial receptivity after embryo transfer (in the llama the signal would be mediated by embryonic estradiol), to be confirmed.
- Birth during the day as a necessity for the cria, because camelids neither lick the newborn nor eat the placenta; housing the females indoors before birth could interfere with the time. Some breeders of the questionnaire reported births just after a morning rain or a brief shower (anecdote, no number).
- The stillborn cria with a short pregnancy could be an abortion classified as stillbirth by the breeder, besides a birth induced by fetal stress as in the dromedary.
- The dystocia rate of 7.3 % against 1.6 % on 1,660 births of another cited work is attributed to the broader definition of dystocia used here (any human intervention, even premature out of anxiety or inexperience).
- The absence of an effect of the sex of the cria on length, different from the horse (where a male fetus can lengthen the pregnancy by up to 7 days, according to the cited works), would suggest an endocrine dynamics specific to camelids.
Implicazioni cliniche
Clinical implications
For the Italian veterinarian who follows pregnant alpaca females. The article contains no therapeutic indications; what follows is the editorial team's reading, and says where the data arrive and where they do not.
- The median is 346 days, and half of the births fall between 339 and 353. A female at 360 or 370 days from the last mating is not abnormal for that reason alone: the observed range goes from 270 to 428 days, with a dispersion (coefficient of variation 3.37 %) similar to that of the horse. The article gives no threshold of delay and no moment to intervene; whoever uses it to decide when to induce or examine a female is asking of the data something they do not contain. The extremes of the sample, moreover, were not verified and may include recording errors.
- Length must be calculated from the date of the last mating, which on the farms of the study was in general well recorded with the weekly encounter method and ultrasound confirmation at 2-3 months. A record without these dates does not allow comparison with the 346 days.
- Differences of one or two days (hemisphere, age of the dam, embryo transfer) have no clinical weight against a dispersion of 11-12 days (editorial estimate). What counts for planning is rather the month of birth (in the south, 3-5 days of difference between births of February-April and of September) and the sire (up to 16 days among the 68 considered), with the reservations stated in Limitations.
- The sex of the cria does not allow the birth to be predicted: no effect on length (6,815 pregnancies), unlike what the authors report for the horse.
- The dystocia of 7.33 % is not a frequency to expect in the clinic. It is the share of births in which the breeder declared any intervention (63 out of 860), a broad definition that the authors themselves indicate as the cause of the gap with the 1.6 % of another cited work. Caesareans are 4 (out of 860 documented births); on all births the article writes two different percentages (0.8 % and 0.46 %), and the count gives 0.47 %.
- A stillbirth after a short pregnancy may be an abortion. In the sample the median of stillborn cria is 339 days against 346 of live ones; the authors admit that the breeder may have classified an abortion as stillbirth, and the text gives neither the definition nor the share of stillborn cria that underwent necropsy. Whoever investigates a late loss must therefore look for the cause in the individual case (see card C-06), not attribute it to the length of the pregnancy.
- Birth weight has a European-Australian reference: median 7.6 kg (2,708 cria), 75 % under 8.4 kg, the lightest survivor 4.4 kg. The scales were different (the authors consider the error negligible), and there is no weight threshold associated with mortality or dystocia: in the sample the weight did not differ between dystocic and eutocic births or between live and stillborn cria (but only 10 stillborn cria have a weight).
- Nothing can be derived about Italy. No Italian farm; the climates and managements of Australia, the United Kingdom and North America are not those of our farms, and the country itself affects length (the authors cite differences among north-western European countries with similar photoperiod and climate).
Limiti
Dichiarati dagli autori (sezione Limitations of the Study e discussione):
- Significato clinico e significato statistico.

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE
Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 12/10/2026
Valutazione a stelle
Limitations
Declared by the authors (section Limitations of the Study and discussion):
- The study depends on the accuracy of the breeders' records; the participants were chosen for the documented quality of their records, and this may produce a second bias, the «good student» effect.
- The data come from the best-managed farms, which may inflate human intervention at birth and therefore dystocia; dystocia versus eutocia and stillbirth versus abortion depend on the breeder's judgment, not on veterinary reports, and must be interpreted with caution (possible misclassification).
- Farm data are missing (altitude, feed supplementation, winter housing and housing before birth), which could explain the effect of the country.
- Under-represented continents: Asia and South America, with scarce and incomplete answers.
- Different scales for weight, measurement error judged «negligible».
- The short extremes could include abortions mistaken for short pregnancies, because the survival of the cria was not reported in those cases.
Added by the editorial team.
- Five discrepancies of the article, verified on the text and not resolved: (1) 48 farms out of 97 are 49.48 % and not the declared 50.52 %; (2) the rows of the table of farms add up to 8,000 pregnancies (5,428 in the north, 2,572 in the south) and not 7,049; (3) the abstract attributes to the age of the dam an effect on length with «p < 0.0001 for both», whereas the results give p = 0.0039; (4) the caesarean is 0.8 % in the results and 0.46 % in the discussion, and 4 out of 860 is 0.47 %; (5) stillbirths are 4.27 % (71 out of 1,663) in the results and 2.7 % in the discussion, and the latter figure cannot be derived from any denominator of the text.
- Other minor inconsistencies: the comparison between the ratio of 0.986 males per female and the share of 51.5 % of males in the dromedary puts side by side two different measures (0.986 males per female equals about 49.7 % of males); the age class is «≤ 6 years» in the methods and «younger than 6 years» in the results on weight and stillbirths, without saying where the females of 6 years fall; the weight of 2,708 cria and the number of pregnancies for the effect of the sire (2,708) coincide, which is possible but not explained.
- Effect of country, farm and hemisphere cannot be separated. The mixed model with all the variables did not converge: the effects are estimated in separate models, and an association with the sire or with the country may be, wholly or in part, an association with the farm (a sire usually works on a single farm). This is a consideration of the editorial team, in line with the collinearity that the authors themselves indicate.
- Pregnancies of the same female or of the same sire are not independent; the tests used (Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis) assume independence, and the declared precision is therefore probably overestimated.
- Clinical significance and statistical significance. With 7,049 pregnancies, one day of difference between hemispheres (346 against 345) or between age classes is «p < 0.0001»; the card does not consider it relevant for the veterinarian. No effect estimate has a confidence interval in the body of the text.
- Corrected thresholds. With the Bonferroni thresholds declared by the authors (q = 0.005 for length, 0.0083 for weight) the following remain: the effect of hemisphere, country, month, sire, age of the dam (p = 0.0039), the effect of age and of month on weight, and the shorter length in stillborn cria (p = 0.0069). The following do not remain: embryo transfer (p = 0.0918), sex on weight (p = 0.0168) and dystocia in long pregnancies (p = 0.0798), which the text calls «trend» and which must not be cited as differences.
- Length is measured from the last mating, not from ovulation or conception; with repeated matings the figure is an overestimate of the real pregnancy.
- Self-selection of breeders: recruited through groups on social networks; 49 of the 97 interested (by the editorial team's count) did not provide the minimum information and we do not know whether they differ from those included.
- Supplementary material not read (questionnaire and data): it cannot be said how missing values were handled or whether the extremes were checked.
- Later literature not searched: it is not excluded that after October 2025 other studies or comments have appeared.
What is missing with respect to the reporting standard (STROBE, cross-sectional version). Present: setting and period (item 5), eligibility criteria (item 6, by quality of records), data sources (item 8), bias (item 9, in part), statistical methods (item 12) with the correction for multiple comparisons, number of participants at the main steps (item 13, with the discrepancies stated above), limitations (item 19), funding (item 22). Absent or partial: the written definition of pregnancy length, of abortion and of stillbirth (item 7); the study size and how it was decided (item 10); the handling of data clustered by farm (item 12, the mixed model failed); the estimates with their precision (item 16); the handling of missing data (item 12). Four items out of twenty-two absent or partial on the editorial team's reading (7, 10, 12, 16).
◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 12/10/2026
A survey that for the first time gives the alpaca pregnancy a distribution, and whose own numbers were not reread to the end.
The value of the article lies in the size of the sample and in its frankness about its limits: 7,049 pregnancies from 48 farms, a median of 346 days that confirms the one known with a much narrower uncertainty, a usable interquartile range in the clinic, and the explicit declaration that dystocia and stillbirth are judgments of the breeders. When the literature on the camelid rests on samples of a few dozen animals, a work like this serves as a reference for the years to come.
Now the part that made us stop as an editorial team: the sums. We redid the divisions that the text allows. Four do not add up. 48 farms out of 97 are 49.48 %, not 50.52 % (which is 49 out of 97). The rows of the table of farms add up to 8,000 pregnancies, not 7,049. Four caesareans out of 860 births are 0.47 %: the article writes 0.8 % in the results and 0.46 % in the discussion. Stillbirths are 71 out of 1,663, that is 4.27 %, in the results; 2.7 % in the discussion, where they are compared with the 6 % of the literature, and the 2.7 % comes out of no denominator. To these is added a fifth inconsistency, in the abstract: the age of the dam appears there with a p below 0.0001 for length, whereas the results give 0.0039. They do not change the median of 346 days nor the order of the factors, but a reader who cited the stillbirth rate from the discussion would cite a number that the work does not produce. For this reason, in the card every number has next to it its denominator and the place in the text it comes from.
A second matter concerns the «trends». The article set itself Bonferroni thresholds (0.005 and 0.0083) and then called «trend» values, such as that of dystocia in long pregnancies (p = 0.0798), that lie above even the ordinary threshold. For the veterinarian the consequence is simple: the three «trends» (embryo transfer, sex and weight, dystocia and length) are not results. Likewise, one day of difference between hemispheres on 7,049 pregnancies is significant and is not relevant.
The comparison with the literature cited by the authors is useful and must be read with one caution. The hypotheses on melatonin, light and endometrial receptivity are proposals to study, not results; and the dystocia of 7.3 %, when elsewhere 1.6 % is cited, depends on the definition, as the authors themselves write. The reader who looks in the article for the moment to intervene in a long pregnancy, or for the cause of a stillbirth, will not find it: they will find a median, an interval, the factors that shift it, and a sample without Italian farms. For the rest of the sequence after birth, card CRL-C-07 and the other cards of this group complete the reading.
Star rating
Axis Score Rationale A · Scientific quality ★★★☆☆ Retrospective observational survey with a declared n that is large for the species (7,049 pregnancies, 48 farms, 2002-2024), declared Bonferroni correction, limits listed by the authors. The fourth star is not reachable by construction: data declared by breeders, self-selected farms, no control. Also holding it back are the five numerical discrepancies, the lack of handling of clustering by farm (the mixed model failed), the absence of confidence intervals and the «trends» so called above the corrected threshold. B · Clinical usefulness ★★★☆☆ It gives the clinician a reference distribution (median 346 days, half of the births between 339 and 353, range 270-428) and a reference for birth weight (7.6 kg), useful for orientation on a long pregnancy. It does not reach four because it contains no decision threshold, no therapy, and no estimate of the real frequency of dystocia; within the constraint B ≤ A + 2. C · Didactic value ★★★★☆ A useful case for teaching three things: how a distribution is read before a median, why a p value with 7,000 observations does not say whether the difference is of use, and why every percentage must be rechecked with its denominator. It does not reach five because the card had to correct the article at five points: a text used to teach how to read numbers should add up. D · Relevance for the species ★★★★☆ A study entirely on the alpaca, largely on European and Australian farms, with births, seasons and management recognizable to the Italian clinician. It does not rise to five because it has no Italian farm, excludes South America and Asia, and because the data are from breeders selected for the quality of their records. No overall score, by construction. A = 3 and C = 4 is the signature of a useful descriptive survey that is not yet polished.
Bottom line
It can be concluded that in the records of 48 farms in 13 countries, with 7,049 alpaca pregnancies recorded between 2002 and 2024, the median length is 346 days (range 270-428), with half of the pregnancies between 339 and 353 days; that length depends on the sire, the country, the month of birth and, by one day, the age of the dam, and not on the sex of the cria or the identity of the dam; that the median cria weight is 7.6 kg (2,708 cria) and does not correlate with length; and that 63 births out of 860 (7.33 %) required an intervention, according to a broad definition.
It cannot be concluded that a long or short pregnancy is pathological in itself, because the article gives no thresholds and because the extremes were not verified; nor that the stillbirth rate is 2.7 %, because the calculation of the results gives 4.27 % (71 out of 1,663) and the two figures sit in the same article without explanation; nor that embryo transfer lengthens the pregnancy, that weight depends on sex or that dystocia follows long pregnancies, because none of these three results passes the thresholds the authors set for themselves; nor that the sire causes the difference, because sire and farm are confounded. Nothing can be derived from here about Italy.
Take-home messages
- The alpaca pregnancy has a median of 346 days, and half of the births fall between 339 and 353. On 7,049 pregnancies from 48 farms; the extremes (270 and 428) were not verified.
- The article gives no threshold of delay: it is not used to decide when to intervene.
- The sex of the cria and the identity of the dam do not change the length; the sire (up to 16 days among 68 males), the country, the month of birth and, by one day, the age of the dam do. One day of difference is statistically significant and clinically negligible.
- The median birth weight is 7.6 kg (2,708 cria, range 3.0-17.7 kg); it does not correlate with length and does not distinguish dystocic from eutocic births.
- The 7.33 % of births with intervention (63 out of 860) is not the clinical frequency of dystocia: it is the share of births in which the breeder intervened, including the times in which he did so out of anxiety.
- Stillbirths: 4.27 % (71 out of 1,663) in the results, 2.7 % in the discussion. The first can be recalculated, the second cannot. A shorter pregnancy in stillborn cria (339 against 346 days) may be an abortion classified as stillbirth.
- Five numbers of the article do not add up (50.52 % instead of 49.48 %; 8,000 instead of 7,049; p for maternal age in the abstract; caesarean 0.8 % against 0.46 %; stillbirths 4.27 % against 2.7 %): the median is cited, not these.
- The «trends» are not results. Embryo transfer, sex on weight and dystocia in long pregnancies lie above the thresholds corrected by the authors themselves.
