  • AQualità scientifica2/5
  • BUtilità clinica4/5
  • CValore didattico4/5
  • DRilevanza per la specie5/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Titolo originale

«Alpaca's stress and welfare from behavioral and physiological perspectives»

Original title

«Alpaca's stress and welfare from behavioral and physiological perspectives»

⚠️ Watch the title under which this article circulates. In the bibliography from which this card originates, the article was listed as «The role of human-animal relationship for alpaca welfare», by Budzyńska. An article with that title does not exist: a title search on Crossref, Europe PMC and OpenAlex, carried out on 01/09/2026, returns zero records across all three databases. The Budzyńska article that matches the description — alpaca, welfare, human-animal relationship — is this one, and the human-animal relationship is one of the three axes declared in the abstract. This card cards the article that exists, and states here the substitution because anyone searching for the original title would never find it.

Autori

Entrambe le autrici afferiscono al Department of Animal Ethology and Wildlife Management, University of Life Sciences in Lublin, Polonia.

Authors

Budzyńska M. · Kapustka J.

Full list, two authors. No ORCID in the article record.

⭐ In this case, affiliations are reported at author level in the Crossref record — and this is the only one of the three new cards where this happens. Both authors are affiliated with the Department of Animal Ethology and Wildlife Management, University of Life Sciences in Lublin, Poland.

Why the group must be acknowledged. This is the Polish Lublin group, i.e. the same one from which CRL-O-02 (alpaca behavior at physical examination) and CRL-O-03 (fleece cortisol) come. Monika Budzyńska also co-authors CRL-O-02, where she is not first author. This review should therefore be read for what it is: the synthesis a group writes about its own line of research, with the merits (it knows the data from the inside) and the limit (it is not an independent review of the field).

Nessuna figura, nessuna tabella.

The abstract, however, is available in two languages — English and German — in the PubMed record, and it is a long descriptive abstract, which states the review's three-part structure and its operational conclusions.

Journal status (verified on 01/09/2026): Tierärztliche Praxis Ausgabe G, publisher Thieme. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: no (query doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:1434-1220, zero records). OpenAlex: 1,875 indexed works, source is_oa: false, is_in_doaj: false, source h-index 18.

Context note. This is the journal of large animals and farm animals of the German-speaking veterinary profession. Publishing an alpaca review here means writing for the veterinarian who examines alpacas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland — that is, exactly the reader of this website, shifted across a border. It is the venue closest to our reader among all those cited in this issue.

License of the original article: no open license declared; editorial copyright regime. This card may reproduce: factual data and short quoted citations. No figures, no tables.

Specie e soggetti

Species and subjects

Alpacas (Vicugna pacos), kept under European conditions and intended for fiber production and tourism. This is the framing stated by the authors in the abstract, and it is the reason this review enters this collection rather than remaining a general piece of writing.

This is not a primary study: it has no subjects of its own. How many works were included, with what search strategy and with what criteria, is not stated in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Tipo di studio e livello di evidenza

Revisione narrativa, dichiarata come review e organizzata in tre aree tematiche.

Study type and level of evidence

Narrative review, declared as a review and organized into three thematic areas.

⛔ This is not a systematic review, and the card does not treat it as one: the abstract does not mention databases queried, search strings, inclusion criteria, number of works examined or a flow diagram. No SANRA score has been assigned by the editors, because assigning one without the full text would be a judgment on what has not been read.

In breve

In brief

A review in three parts — (i) regulation and assessment of stress in the alpaca; (ii) alpaca welfare and the Five Freedoms; (iii) the importance of knowledge of behavior for improving welfare — written for the European veterinarian. There are four operational conclusions, and they are the same ones that emerge from the primary studies in this collection: keep routine procedures short, ensure sufficient space with access to species-appropriate feed, ensure contact with conspecifics, use positive training techniques.

«Kept in the European conditions and used for fiber production and tourism»: il turismo compare nell'inquadramento.

Why this study matters

For three reasons, in decreasing order of importance.

First: it is the framework into which the other cards fit. The authors say so at the outset — alpaca welfare requires a multidisciplinary approach that holds together applied ethology, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. This collection is organized exactly this way, and this review is the document the reader should read first, with the primary-study cards second.

Second: it is written for the European alpaca, and about tourism. «Kept in the European conditions and used for fiber production and tourism»: tourism appears in the framing. It is the only one of the sources in this issue to explicitly name the context in which alpacas are growing in number in Italy — walks, open farms, visits — and this makes it, for our reader, immediately relevant.

Third: it converges. The four operational conclusions coincide with those that CRL-D-06 derives from an experiment in Peru and CRL-D-07 from a questionnaire in Austria and Germany. When three independent works, with different methods and on different continents, arrive at the same four recommendations, those recommendations can be given.

Obiettivo

Objective

To review the main sources of stress in the alpaca, the behavioral and physiological responses to stressful situations, and the possibilities of developing positive human-animal relationships and improving the welfare of alpacas kept under European conditions for fiber production and for tourism.

Disegno dello studio

Revisione narrativa in tre aree:

  1. Regolazione e valutazione dello stress nell'alpaca.

Study design

Narrative review in three areas:

  1. Regulation and assessment of stress in the alpaca.
  2. Alpaca welfare and the Five Freedoms.
  3. The importance of knowledge of behavior for improving welfare.

Metodi / Protocollo

Methods / Protocol

⚠️ Not stated in the abstract. Databases, period covered, inclusion and exclusion criteria, number of sources, any quality assessment of included sources: all [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The card does not assume that these exist, nor does it assume that they do not.

Risultati principali

Main results

The authors conclude that, alongside many factors that can induce a stress response in the alpaca and reduce its quality of life, there are numerous possibilities for optimizing its welfare and increasing its behavioral comfort; and that correct alpaca care must be founded on knowledge of the species' behavioral repertoire and on the rules of good management practice.

The four levers explicitly indicated as capable of significantly benefiting the animals:

  1. Keep the duration of routine management procedures short.
  2. Ensure sufficient space, in an area with access to species-appropriate feed.
  3. Ensure contact with conspecifics.
  4. Use positive training techniques.

⚠️ No numerical values: it is a narrative review and the abstract does not report any. The card does not invent any.

Implicazioni cliniche

Clinical implications

  1. The four levers are a checklist usable during a visit. Duration of procedures, space, feed, conspecifics, training: five questions to ask whoever cares for the animal, and each has at least one primary study behind it in this collection.
  2. Contact with conspecifics should always be asked about. It is the only one of the four levers not covered by a primary study in this issue, and at the same time the one most often mismanaged in Italy: an alpaca kept alone, or paired with an animal of another species, is a situation that is encountered and that must be named.
  3. Tourism is a welfare context, not just an economic activity. The authors place it in the framing; alpaca walks, in Italy, are increasing and have no literature of their own.
  4. Positive training returns, for the third time. Here as a recommendation of a review, in CRL-D-07 as a measured association, in CRL-O-02 as a precondition for all animals studied.

Limiti

  • Nessun dato nuovo: chi cerca numeri deve andare agli studi primari.

Commento dell'associazione

Valutazione a stelle

AsseVotoMotivazione
B · Utilità clinica★★★★☆Quattro raccomandazioni operative, chiare, ricordabili e applicabili senza attrezzatura.

Limitations

  • ⛔ It is a narrative review without a stated method as far as this card has read: it is not a systematic review and should not be cited as one. Which works were included, and why, is not verifiable.
  • ⛔ It is not independent of the field it reviews. The authors belong to the Lublin group, which has produced part of the primary literature on the subject (CRL-O-02, CRL-O-03). This is normal and not a fault; it is however a reason not to use this review as verification of those studies.
  • Closed access, full text not read. The card relies on the bilingual abstract.
  • The four recommendations are matters of animal-husbandry common sense, and the abstract does not state the strength of evidence behind each one. That they are reasonable does not mean they are proven: for two of the four — short procedure and training — this collection has primary studies; for the other two, it does not.
  • No new data: anyone looking for numbers must go to the primary studies.

Association commentary

This card originates from a bibliographic error, and we want to tell that story. The article had been given to us under a title — «The role of human-animal relationship for alpaca welfare» — that does not exist in any database. It would have been easy to card it anyway, putting that title at the top with the DOI of the article that resembles it: no one would have noticed for years. We did the opposite: we carded the article that exists, with the title it has, and we wrote at the top of the card what happened. A title that circulates incorrectly is the quietest way in which a bibliography decays, and the only remedy is to say so the first time it is encountered.

On the content: it is the review we would have wanted to write ourselves, and we are glad we don't have to. The four final levers are exactly the ones this collection had arrived at on its own, from different studies and with different methods. When convergence exists, one stops discussing and starts recommending: short procedures, space, appropriate food, companions of one's own species, gentle training. It is not a brilliant list. It is the list that holds.

The lever we insist on most is the third, contact with conspecifics, because it is the one we see missing most often in Italy and because it is the only one of the four that costs no effort and no technique: it only costs a second animal. An alpaca kept alone is not an alpaca kept a little worse: it is a social animal kept in a condition that its behavioral repertoire does not provide for.

The word tourism in the framing, finally, interests us more than it might seem. In Italy alpaca walks are growing, and they have no literature of their own — no one has ever measured an alpaca during a walk with strangers. Issue CRL-O says the same thing for assisted interventions: no camelid has ever been measured during a session. Tourism and assisted interventions are the same gap seen from two sides, and it is the gap that this association has before it.

Star rating

AxisScoreRationale
A · Scientific quality★★☆☆☆Two stars, and this is not a judgment on the content. It is a narrative review for which, as far as this card has read, no method is stated: neither databases, nor criteria, nor number of sources; and the authors belong to the group that produced part of the reviewed literature. The chapter 14 grid does not grant a third star to a synthesis whose method is not verifiable. It does not drop to one because the framing is explicit, the three-part structure is stated and the conclusions are consistent with the independent primary studies in this same issue.
B · Clinical utility★★★★☆Four operational recommendations, clear, memorable and applicable without equipment. It is the card to hand to whoever provides care. It does not reach five because the abstract does not state the strength of evidence behind each one, and two of the four do not have, in this collection, a primary study supporting them.
C · Educational value★★★★☆It is the framing text of the issue: it gives the map in which cards D-03, D-06, D-07 and O-02 find their place, and it does so in the language and context of the European veterinarian. The fifth star is withheld by the closed access: a first-choice educational reference must be able to be handed to the student.
D · Relevance to the species★★★★★Alpaca, European conditions, fiber and tourism. There is nothing to discount on this axis: it is the reader's species, in the reader's context, and it names a use — tourism — that no other source in this issue names.

No overall score, by design. A = 2 and B = 4 is the typical signature of a useful narrative review: the advice is worth more than the method by which it was gathered, and whoever cites it must say what it is.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that a review exists, published in the German-speaking large-animal journal and written explicitly for the alpaca kept in Europe for fiber and tourism, that organizes the field into three areas — stress assessment, Five Freedoms, knowledge of behavior — and derives from them four operational recommendations: short routine procedures, sufficient space with species-appropriate feed, contact with conspecifics, training with positive techniques. It can be concluded that these four recommendations are consistent with the independent primary studies carded in this issue (CRL-D-03, CRL-D-06, CRL-D-07).

This work cannot be cited as a systematic review: it does not state method, databases, criteria or number of sources as far as this card has read. No numerical data can be derived from it, because it reports none. It cannot be used as independent verification of the studies of the Lublin group, of which the authors are members. It cannot be assumed that the four recommendations carry the same strength of evidence: for two — short procedure and training — this collection has primary studies; for space and conspecifics, it does not.

Messaggi da portare a casa

Take-home messages

  1. Four levers, easy to remember: short procedures, space with appropriate food, companions of one's own species, gentle training.
  2. Contact with conspecifics is the lever most often missing in Italy, and the only one of the four that is solved with a second animal rather than a technique.
  3. Convergence is the notable fact. An experiment in Peru, a questionnaire in Austria and a review in Poland arrive at the same recommendations: one can stop debating them.
  4. It is a narrative review and should be cited as such. Anyone who cites it as a systematic review makes an error that the expert reader spots immediately.
  5. Tourism with alpacas has no literature of its own. It appears in the framing of this review and does not appear in any primary study: it is a gap, not a shortcoming of our research.
  6. The title under which this article circulates in some bibliographies is wrong. The real title is the one written at the top of this card; the DOI is 10.1055/a-2632-2386.

CRL-D-06 (the Peruvian experiment from which, with a completely different method, comes the same recommendation to keep the procedure short and to ensure feed afterward) · CRL-D-07 (the Central European questionnaire that measures the training lever on a large sample: it is the primary source of the fourth recommendation) · CRL-D-03 (the physiological parameters of stress in the species, i.e. the subject matter of the first of the three areas of this review) · CRL-O-02 and CRL-O-03 (the two primary studies of the same Lublin group, to be read knowing that this review is not an independent verification of them).

Card CRL-D-08 · version 1.0 · 01/09/2026 · synthesizes a single source, read only in the bilingual abstract (English and German) and in the metadata: the article is closed access, with no open license stated and no deposited copy in public archives. Still to be read in the full text: the review's method — databases, period, inclusion criteria, number of sources —, the bibliography, the strength of evidence attributed to each of the four recommendations, funding and conflicts of interest. No SANRA score has been assigned, because assessing the quality of a narrative review without the full text would be a judgment on what has not been read. ⚠️ This card documents a bibliographic correction: the title under which the article had been reported to the association — «The role of human-animal relationship for alpaca welfare» — does not correspond to any existing record in Crossref, Europe PMC and OpenAlex as of 01/09/2026, and the article carded here is the one that corresponds to the description by author, species and topic.
