Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Autori
Autore corrispondente: Rubén Pinares — Escuela Profesional de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Sicuani, Perù ([email protected], come dichiarato nell'articolo).
Affiliazioni degli altri autori, come dichiarate nell'articolo: Centro de Investigación en Camélidos Sudamericanos (CICAS) La Raya, Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Sicuani (Meza); Instituto de Educación Superior Pedagógico Internacional Elim, Lima (Crispín); Facultad de Ingeniería, Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac, Abancay (Lozano); Instituto Veterinario de Investigaciones Tropicales y de Altura (IVITA-Maranganí), Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima (Pezo).

Complete list, five authors, in the order and form of the Crossref record (queried on 31/08/2026). No ORCID is present in the Crossref record for any of the five authors.
Corresponding author: Rubén Pinares — Escuela Profesional de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Sicuani, Peru ([email protected], as stated in the article).
Affiliations of the other authors, as stated in the article: Centro de Investigación en Camélidos Sudamericanos (CICAS) La Raya, Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Sicuani (Meza); Instituto de Educación Superior Pedagógico Internacional Elim, Lima (Crispín); Facultad de Ingeniería, Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac, Abancay (Lozano); Instituto Veterinario de Investigaciones Tropicales y de Altura (IVITA-Maranganí), Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima (Pezo).
It is worth noting straight away: two of the five authors belong to the two institutions where the sample was collected. This is an ordinary condition in this field — camelid research centers are also herds — and it is not a declared conflict; it is, however, a piece of context.

PubMed / MEDLINE: no (vedi nota sopra).

⚠ Bibliographic note — why this article cannot be found on PubMed
This is the first thing an Italian veterinarian must know about this issue, and it has nothing to do with alpacas.
A Europe PMC search for
DOI:"10.3389/fanim.2023.1167113"returns zero results (query of 31/08/2026). This is not a defect of the article: Frontiers in Animal Science is not a journal indexed in MEDLINE. The query"Frontiers in Animal Science"[Journal]on PubMed (esearch, 31/08/2026) returns only three records in total (PMID 34966907, 34825243, 36325303), which are PMC deposits of NIH-funded articles and not an indexing of the title.Operational consequence, and it is a heavy one: whoever searches for camelid fiber literature only on PubMed finds almost nothing, and concludes that it does not exist. This is not true: it exists, and it is elsewhere — on Crossref, on DOAJ, on OpenAlex, in Peruvian journals (Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Perú, Scientia Agropecuaria), in open-access conference proceedings volumes. The gap that many attribute to the literature is, in large part, a gap in the search engine used.
Journal status (verified 31/08/2026): Frontiers in Animal Science, electronic ISSN 2673-6225 (ISSN-L 2673-6225), publisher Frontiers Media SA. PubMed / MEDLINE: no (see note above). DOAJ: yes (is_in_doaj = true on the OpenAlex record for the title). OpenAlex: 962 indexed works, fully open-access journal. It is a young title — founded in 2020 — from a large and controversial publisher; it is indexed in DOAJ, which is the minimum requirement set by §7 of chapter 14 of the KT, but it does not yet have the track record that would allow it to be considered a reference venue.

Specie e soggetti
Specie: alpaca — Vicugna pacos. Nessun'altra specie nello studio.
- per tipo genetico: 68 Huacaya e 50 Suri;
- per sito: 44 alla fiera di Pitumarca, 41 alla fiera di Maranganí, 33 al CICAS La Raya (Centro de Investigación en Camélidos Sudamericanos, provincia di Canchis, regione di Cusco, Perù);
- per età, in classi dentarie: A (DL, denti da latte, 7-18 mesi) n = 22; B (2D, due denti, 18 mesi-2 anni) n = 52; C (4D, quattro denti, 2-3 anni) n = 14; D (BL, bocca piena, ≥ 3 anni) n = 30;
Species and subjects
Species: alpaca — Vicugna pacos. No other species in the study.
n = 118 alpacas, all of colored fleece (black and brown; whites are excluded by design), distributed as follows:
- by genetic type: 68 Huacaya and 50 Suri;
- by site: 44 at the Pitumarca fair, 41 at the Maranganí fair, 33 at CICAS La Raya (Centro de Investigación en Camélidos Sudamericanos, Canchis province, Cusco region, Peru);
- by age, in dental classes: A (DL, milk teeth, 7-18 months) n = 22; B (2D, two teeth, 18 months-2 years) n = 52; C (4D, four teeth, 2-3 years) n = 14; D (BL, full mouth, ≥ 3 years) n = 30;
- by sex: males and females (the numerical breakdown by sex is not reported in the text consulted — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]).
Dates and locations of sampling, as stated: XXVI regional livestock fair of Pitumarca and LXX Expo Feria Agropecuaria of Maranganí, both 16-24 June 2022; CICAS La Raya, 16 June 2022.
A design element that determines how everything else should be read: two of the three sites are livestock fairs. At a fair, one brings the best animal one has. The third site is an unselected herd of a research center. The sample is therefore not representative of the population of Cusco alpacas: it is a comparison between a showcase and an ordinary flock, and the authors themselves attribute it to selection.
Study type and level of evidence
Cross-sectional observational study on a convenience sample, with standardized instrumental measures and comparison between groups defined post hoc (genetic type, site, age, sex). It is not an experiment: no treatment was assigned, no randomization is possible or would make sense.
Level of evidence: descriptive-analytical observational study. Consequence for the reader: the measurements are as reliable as the instrument and the procedure (which here are stated and are those of the industry); the differences between groups are associations in a non-probabilistic sample, and the most interesting one — the one between sites — is confounded with the selection of animals brought to the fair. This article can be used to know how much colored alpaca fiber measures; not to estimate the average of a region.
Relevant reporting standard: STROBE (observational studies). Declared by the authors: no — the word STROBE does not appear in the article. As required by §3 of chapter 14, the checklist is used retroactively to say what is missing, not to reproach.
In breve
In brief
One hundred and eighteen colored alpacas from three sites in the Cusco region were sampled on the left flank and measured with an OFDA 2000 following the IWTO-47 procedure. Huacaya fiber turns out to be finer than Suri fiber — 22.95 µm versus 24.71 µm mean diameter (p < 0.05) — and more uniform; Suri fiber is markedly longer — 118.20 mm versus 68.16 mm staple length (p < 0.001) — and much less curved (16.75 °/mm versus 45.14 °/mm, p < 0.001). But the largest gap is not between the two genetic types: it is between sites. Alpacas brought to the two fairs measure 22.48 and 22.28 µm; those of the unselected CICAS La Raya herd measure 27.08 µm (p < 0.001), with a comfort factor — the percentage of fibers under 30 µm in the sample — dropping from 90.37% and 89.72% to 73.25% (p < 0.01). The correlations measured on the same sample finally show that mean diameter, spinning fineness and comfort factor are largely the same number said in three ways.
Why this study matters
Because it is, today, the best-documented Suri/Huacaya comparison one can cite: a single instrument, a single procedure, a single sampling period, all commercial parameters together, free full text.
And because it contains a result that overturns the current conversation in the industry. The market — and much of the literature for breeders — discusses Suri versus Huacaya as if that is where the value lies. This study measures that difference and finds it equal to 1.76 µm on mean diameter. In the same sample, with the same instrument, the difference between selected animals and unselected animals is worth about 4.7 µm (22.28-22.48 µm versus 27.08 µm). The economic lever is almost three times larger on management than on the genetics of fleece type.
Obiettivo
Dichiarato dagli autori (abstract, sezione Introduction): «The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of color, breed, location, age, and sex of alpacas on fiber quality characteristics and staple length.»
Objective
Stated by the authors (abstract, Introduction section): «The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of color, breed, location, age, and sex of alpacas on fiber quality characteristics and staple length.»
Clinical question in PICO form (editorial phrasing; the observational design allows this only in part): in alpacas (Vicugna pacos) of colored fleece raised in the Cusco region [P], does belonging to the Suri type [I] compared to the Huacaya type [C] — and, in parallel, coming from a selected herd compared to an unselected flock — associate with differences in mean fiber diameter, its variability, comfort factor, spinning fineness, curvature and staple length [O]?
Disegno dello studio
Study design
Cross-sectional survey with convenience sampling at three sites, in a single time window (16-24 June 2022). The explanatory variables are four — color, genetic type (breed), site, age, sex — and are all pre-existing characteristics of the animals, not assigned.
No assignment, no blinding, no follow-up: these are the three things this design does not have and cannot have. The sample size calculation is not reported and does not appear to have been performed.
Metodi / Protocollo
Il prelievo. Campione di 2 g prelevato dal centro del fianco sinistro (mid-side), dietro la terza costa, a metà fra la linea dorsale e la linea del ventre, come citato dal testo: «Fiber samples (2 g) were taken from the middle of the left side of the animal (mid-side), behind the third rib, halfway between the back line and the belly line.»
Methods / Protocol
Sampling. A 2 g sample taken from the center of the left flank (mid-side), behind the third rib, halfway between the back line and the belly line, as quoted from the text: «Fiber samples (2 g) were taken from the middle of the left side of the animal (mid-side), behind the third rib, halfway between the back line and the belly line.»
This detail is not pedantry. The Polish literature on the same topic (Radzik-Rant, Wielechowska and Rant, Animals 2021;11(10):2939, PMCID PMC8532777 — not catalogued here) has measured on 16 adult females that the mean fleece diameter correlates with that of the flank at r = 0.927 and that the neck and pieces have higher medullation and shorter fiber. The flank is the right point precisely because it is the one that represents the fleece. A sample taken from the neck measures a different animal.
The instrument and procedure. OFDA 2000, optical fiber diameter analyzer, calibrated on a standard wool top according to the IWTO-47 procedure (2007 edition), under standardized laboratory conditions — 20 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity — according to the IWTO-52 procedure. The environmental conditions are stated because keratin fiber absorbs moisture and the measured diameter changes with the humidity of the room: whoever compares two measurements made under undisclosed conditions is comparing two different things.
The parameters measured (all on alpaca, all with OFDA 2000/IWTO-47, on the same 2 g flank sample):
| Abbreviation | Name | Unit | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| MFD | mean fiber diameter | µm | mean of the diameters measured on the sample |
| SD | standard deviation of the MFD | µm | absolute dispersion of the diameters |
| CV | coefficient of variation of the MFD | % | SD/MFD × 100 — relative dispersion |
| CF | comfort factor | % | percentage of fibers in the sample with diameter < 30 µm |
| SF | spinning fineness | µm | equivalent diameter used by the industry for the spinning count |
| MC | mean curvature | °/mm | how curved the fiber is |
| SL | staple length | mm | length of the staple |
The analysis. Comparisons between levels of the four explanatory variables with significance reported by thresholds (ns, * p < 0.05, ** p < 0.01, *** p < 0.001) and mean-separation letters for the three-level comparisons. The exact statistical model (analysis of variance, post-hoc test, any correction for multiple comparisons) is not reported in the text consulted here — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. This is a real gap: without the model one does not know whether the comparison between sites was adjusted for genetic type, and that is exactly the adjustment that would be needed.
Risultati principali

Main results
All values below are measurements on alpacas (Vicugna pacos) of colored fleece, obtained with OFDA 2000 following IWTO-47, on a 2 g sample taken from the flank, n = 118 overall. Group means are reported by the authors without standard deviation of the mean nor confidence intervals — this is a limitation of the reporting, not an omission of this datasheet.

To be read with care: in this sample, age does NOT significantly influence mean diameter nor comfort factor. Only staple length varies. This is a result that contrasts with what was measured on an independent sample of white Huacaya alpacas from Huancavelica (Paucar-Chanca et al., Scientia Agropecuaria 2019;10(3):429-432, DOI 10.17268/sci.agropecu.2019.03.14 — not catalogued here), where the MFD rose from 21.35 µm at 2 years to 24.70 µm at 7 years. The two populations differ in color, in center and — above all — in the breadth of the age window: there are no seven-year-old animals here, the oldest class is "≥ 3 years." The discrepancy is therefore explainable and should be stated, not hidden.

| Staple length (mm) | 81.51 | 98.36 | < 0.05 |
A useful methodological curiosity: mean diameter does not differ significantly between sexes, but comfort factor and spinning fineness do. This is not a contradiction: comfort factor is sensitive to the thick tail of the distribution (the few fibers above 30 µm), which the mean diameter dilutes. Whoever compares two lots by looking only at the mean throws away exactly the information the buyer will use.

⚠️ Methodological note on the value of these r's. A Peruvian study on 22,543 Huacaya alpaca fleece samples from the Puno region (Apaza Zúñiga et al., Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Perú 2022;33(3):e22908, DOI 10.15381/rivep.v33i3.22908 — not catalogued here) concludes that for alpaca fiber traits Spearman's correlation is more appropriate than Pearson's, because Pearson values turn out to be systematically higher on the same pairs of variables. The r's above are Pearson's: they should be read as plausibly overestimated, and the qualitative conclusion (MFD, SF and CF are almost the same number) remains robust nonetheless.
Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)
The authors explicitly attribute the gap between sites to selection: the animals from Pitumarca and Maranganí come from selected herds and are brought to the fair, those from the CICAS La Raya are an unselected flock. This is a reasonable attribution and stated as such; it is not demonstrated by the design, which has no way to separate genetic selection from management, feeding, pasture altitude or the simple fact that the best animal is brought to the fair.
The authors also conclude that color (black versus brown) does not influence fiber characteristics nor staple length — which is the article's most useful "negative" result for those who trade colored fiber.
Implicazioni pratiche
Practical implications
- The sampling protocol is replicable tomorrow on an Italian farm, and this datasheet reports it in full: 2 g from the left flank behind the third rib, halfway between the back line and the belly line; measurement with OFDA 2000 following IWTO-47 under conditions of 20 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 5% RH following IWTO-52. Asking the laboratory which instrument and which procedure it used is part of the report, exactly as one asks about the method of a blood test.
- The number to compare is not one: it is three. Mean diameter (µm), coefficient of variation (%) and comfort factor (% of fibers < 30 µm). The first tells how fine it is, the second how homogeneous it is, the third how much it will prickle. In this sample males and females have the same MFD and different comfort factors.
- Suri is not "the prized alpaca": it is another fiber. 50 mm longer on the staple, almost three times less curved, on average 1.76 µm coarser and less uniform. It has a different market (luster, drape) and a different processing. Selling it as "finer" is false in this sample.
- The room for improvement lies in the herd, not in the genetic type. Almost 5 µm separate selected and unselected; 1.76 µm separate Huacaya and Suri.
Limiti
Finanziamento: dichiarato. «This research is part of project approved with Resolution No 084-2022-VRIN-UNSAAC: Depigmentation of black and brown fibers with hydrogen peroxide and microscopic characterization of medullated fibers in Huacaya alpacas. Funding was by the National University of San Antonio Abad del Cusco (UNSAAC).» Finanziatore pubblico universitario, nessuno sponsor industriale.
Conflitti di interesse: dichiarati assenti. «The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest.»
Limitations
Limitations declared by the authors: [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT] — in the text consulted, no explicit "Limitations" section was identified. If one exists, it should be cited; this datasheet does not state that the authors did not declare limitations, it states that none were found.
Limitations added by the editorial staff:
- Convenience sample, not probabilistic. No reference population is defined; the means do not estimate anything beyond the 118 animals measured.
- Structural confounding between site and selection. This is the most interesting result and the least interpretable one: two of the three sites are fairs. The design does not allow separating "territory" from "showcase."
- Sample size not justified by a calculation, and very unbalanced classes: age class C has n = 14 against n = 52 for class B.
- Breakdown by sex not reported, which makes it impossible to weight the comparison between sexes.
- Statistical model not described: without it one does not know whether the comparisons between sites are adjusted for genetic type, age and sex. This is the heaviest gap with respect to STROBE.
- No measure of dispersion of the mean (neither SD of the mean nor 95% CI) alongside the group values: the differences are declared significant but their magnitude cannot be assessed with uncertainty.
- Colored alpacas only. The result does not extend to whites, which are the majority of commercial fiber.
- Medullation is not measured. It is the main textile defect of alpaca fiber and requires a microscope, not the OFDA; the article does not report it.
Funding: declared. «This research is part of project approved with Resolution No 084-2022-VRIN-UNSAAC: Depigmentation of black and brown fibers with hydrogen peroxide and microscopic characterization of medullated fibers in Huacaya alpacas. Funding was by the National University of San Antonio Abad del Cusco (UNSAAC).» Public university funder, no industry sponsor.
Conflicts of interest: declared absent. «The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest.»
◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE
Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 31/08/2026
Fonte: Kiesling C., «The Camelid Registry LAREU: What Are We Breeding In Europe?», in Gerken M., Renieri C., Allain D., Galbraith H. (a cura di), Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals, Universitätsverlag Göttingen 2019, pp. 97-110, ISBN 978-3-86395-408-6.
Valutazione a stelle
What is missing relative to the reporting standard (STROBE, applied retroactively)
- The design is not stated in the title or abstract with a standard term.
- The definition of the source population is missing, as is the recruitment criterion for the animals sampled at the fairs.
- Numbers and reasons for any exclusions are missing (how many animals sampled, how many samples discarded).
- The description of the statistical method is missing, as is the treatment of confounders.
- Measures of uncertainty are missing (95% CI or standard error) alongside the estimates.
- An explicit discussion of limitations and generalizability is missing.
- Present and well done, instead: the description of the instrument, the calibration procedure, the environmental measurement conditions and the anatomical sampling point. This is the part that matters most and is not usually the one that is well written.
◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial staff · 31/08/2026
Huacaya versus Suri is 1.76 µm; selected versus unselected herd, in the same sample and with the same instrument, is about 4.7 µm.
The first comparison — Huacaya versus Suri, 1.76 µm — is the one the whole industry talks about, and the one that appears in brochures. The second — selected herd versus unselected herd, about 4.7 µm in the same sample, with the same instrument, in the same month — is the one nobody advertises, because it is not bought: it is done.
Why this concerns a European breeder more than it seems. The LAREU register, as of April 2017, counted 19,892 camelids in Europe held by 2,583 owners, with an average of 7.7 animals per owner; in Italy 1,008 animals held by 109 owners (479 alpacas and 529 llamas — Italy is the only country among the top eight where llamas outnumber alpacas). Source: Kiesling C., «The Camelid Registry LAREU: What Are We Breeding In Europe?», in Gerken M., Renieri C., Allain D., Galbraith H. (eds.), Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals, Universitätsverlag Göttingen 2019, pp. 97-110, ISBN 978-3-86395-408-6. LAREU is a voluntary, free register, not a census: the figures are, by construction, an underestimate.
A holder with eight animals does not have a population to select from. They have no genetic variance, no replacement stock, no males to choose among. What they have, and what this study quantifies, is the other half of the lever: sampling done well, measurement done with a stated instrument, separating the neck and pieces from the fleece, shearing at the right time, feeding. The gap of almost five microns between La Raya and the fairs is not all genetics, and it is precisely this ambiguity — which we had to flag above as a methodological limitation — that makes the result useful to whoever has eight alpacas instead of eight hundred.
The second thing this datasheet serves to say, and it costs little to say well. The comfort factor is not an adjective. It is the percentage of fibers in the sample below 30 µm, measured by an instrument on a 2 g sample taken at a precise point. When a price list writes "comfort factor 90%" without saying with which instrument, on which sample and taken from where, it is not giving a datum: it is giving a reassurance. The difference between the two things is entirely in this datasheet: 90.37% at Pitumarca and 73.25% at La Raya, same species, same instrument, same week.
The third, and it is the one that concerns us as an association. This article does not exist on PubMed. There is no PMID, there is no PMCID, the journal is not in MEDLINE. An Italian veterinarian who opens PubMed and searches
alpaca fiber diameterwill never find it, and will conclude — as we concluded in an earlier version of chapter 11 — that fiber literature is scarce. Fiber literature is not scarce: it is outside PubMed. It is on Crossref, on DOAJ, on OpenAlex, in Peruvian journals, in Göttingen's open-access conference proceedings volumes. Whoever wants to work seriously on this species must change engine, not expectations. This is, in our view, the most costly bibliographic lesson of the entire E fascicle. What we do not conclude from this study. We do not conclude that Cusco alpacas measure 22.9 µm: 118 colored animals, two of the three sites at fairs, do not estimate a region. We do not conclude that age does not matter for diameter: here the oldest class is "≥ 3 years," and on another sample with animals up to seven years old, diameter rises. We conclude nothing about white alpacas, which are not in the study.
Star rating
Axis Score Rationale A · Scientific quality ★★★☆☆ Observational study with declared n for each subgroup, partially explicit selection criteria, stated and standardized instrument and measurement procedure (OFDA 2000, IWTO-47, IWTO-52), stated environmental conditions, declared funding and conflicts of interest. The fourth star would require a prospective controlled design or ARRIVE consistency: here the statistical model, measures of uncertainty, sample size justification and a limitations section are missing. B · Clinical utility ★★★☆☆ Offers a replicable procedure described in sufficient detail — sampling point, sample mass, instrument, procedure, conditions — and a grid of reference values against which to position a lot. To be used with the caution imposed by the observational design. Cross-constraint respected: B = A. No dose, route or therapeutic protocol is involved. C · Educational value ★★★★☆ Teaches three things at once: that comfort factor, spinning fineness and mean diameter are almost the same number (r = −0.95 and 0.99); that the mean can fail to differ while comfort factor differs, because the latter reads the tail of the distribution; and that staple length is independent of diameter (r = −0.01, n.s.), i.e. that "long" and "fine" are two markets, not two degrees of the same scale. Course material. D · Relevance to the species ★★★☆☆ Study on Vicugna pacos and only on that, in a clinical and management context common for the species but Andean — Cusco livestock fairs, high-altitude herd — and on colored alpacas. The measurement protocol is fully transferable to Europe; the mean values are only transferable as a term of comparison, not as an expectation. The fourth star would require a large or multicenter sample with a population described well enough to assess transferability: here the source population is not defined. No overall score, by construction.
Bottom line. One can conclude that, in colored alpacas measured with OFDA 2000 following IWTO-47, Huacaya fiber is finer and more uniform than Suri by about 1.8 µm while Suri is longer by about 50 mm on the staple and three times less curved, and that in the same sample the difference between a selected herd and an unselected flock is almost triple that between the two genetic types. One cannot conclude that those values represent the Cusco alpaca population nor any European population, nor that the gap between sites is due to genetic selection: the design does not separate selection from management nor from the showcase effect of the two fairs.
Esiste, e sta su Crossref, DOAJ e OpenAlex.
Take-home messages
- Huacaya 22.95 µm versus Suri 24.71 µm (OFDA 2000/IWTO-47, colored alpacas, n = 68 and 50, 2 g sample from the flank, June 2022). The difference between the two genetic types is 1.76 µm.
- Selected 22.28-22.48 µm versus unselected 27.08 µm in the same study: about 4.7 µm, almost triple. The lever is the herd.
- Comfort factor is a percentage with a denominator: the fibers of the sample. 90.37% at Pitumarca, 73.25% at CICAS La Raya. Without a stated instrument and sample, it is not a datum.
- Length and fineness are independent (r = −0.01 with MFD, not significant): a long fleece is not a fine fleece, and Suri proves it.
- This article is not on PubMed. Whoever searches only there concludes that fiber literature does not exist. It exists, and it is on Crossref, DOAJ and OpenAlex.

Datasheet CRL-E-01 · version 1.0 · 31/08/2026 · summarizes a single source, not a body of literature. It has not been searched, and is therefore not excluded, whether more recent or broader Suri/Huacaya comparisons exist; the Europe PMC and Crossref search of 31/08/2026 returned none, but the journal of this very article is not indexed in MEDLINE, which makes the search by exclusion structurally less reliable in this domain than in the other four of this fascicle.
