- AQualità scientifica3/5
- BUtilità clinica3/5
- CValore didattico5/5
- DRilevanza per la specie3/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

7 · Stato della rivista
The Canadian Veterinary Journal — verificato il 31/08/2026. ISSN 0008-5286; NLM ID 0004653; editore Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.
7 · Journal status
The Canadian Veterinary Journal — checked on 08/31/2026. ISSN 0008-5286; NLM ID 0004653; publisher Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: no — the query doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:0008-5286 returns total: 0. OpenAlex: the record sources/issn:0008-5286 reports 216 indexed works, is_oa: false, is_in_doaj: false; the count is manifestly partial for a journal publishing since 1960, a sign that OpenAlex holds more separate records for it — the record reports the figure as returned, without correcting it, and without using it as a measure of the journal.
It is the journal of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association: a professional association journal, peer-reviewed, not predatory. Applying the five questions of chapter 14 §7.1: it has been indexed in PubMed since 1960, has an identifiable, non-commercial publisher, is not paid open access, and its editorial base is public. Absence from DOAJ is not a warning sign because the journal does not present itself as open access.
8 · Licenza dell'articolo
Copyright editoriale, nessuna licenza aperta. La pagina dell'articolo riporta: «Copyright and/or publishing rights held by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association».
8 · Article license
Publisher copyright, no open license. The article page states: «Copyright and/or publishing rights held by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association». Europe PMC's license field is empty and isOpenAccess is N: the article is free to read but not freely reusable.
This record may therefore reproduce: factual data and short quoted excerpts, under the right of quotation. It may not reproduce tables or figures, and accordingly the values in field 15 are reported as single numeric data points rather than as a reproduction of table 1 or 2. Read and verified on 08/31/2026.
9 · Specie e soggetti
15 camelidi sudamericani: 7 lama e 8 alpaca.
9 · Species and subjects
15 South American camelids: 7 llamas and 8 alpacas. Breakdown as stated, and this is the second of the five articles in the issue to give one.
- Sex, as reported on the PMC page: of the 7 llamas, 2 intact males and 5 intact females; of the 8 alpacas, 6 intact males and 2 intact females → the sex breakdown is
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]for form only, having undergone a single reading pass. - Median age 5 years (range 0.5-13 years). The inclusion criteria excluded animals younger than 6 months.
- Setting: single university referral hospital — Texas A&M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital — between January 2003 and June 2011. Of 327 camelids presented in the period, 15 met the case definition. The denominator is there, and it is the reason this case series is worth more than a case series.
- Season: presentations from May to October, the majority in August (8 of 15 cases).
- No animal with pre-existing disease, by construction: the case definition excluded them. No control group.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
Editorial formulation; the design allows only the descriptive form.
In a South American camelid older than 6 months, with no pre-existing disease, that fell ill after exposure to a hot environment [P], what are the clinical, clinicopathological, and pathological findings [O], and what is short-term survival? There is no [I] or [C]: the study compares nothing with nothing.
11 · Disegno dello studio
Nessun confronto, nessuna analisi statistica inferenziale, nessuna randomizzazione. Confronti descrittivi fra sottogruppi (animali in decubito contro animali in stazione) senza test.
11 · Study design
Retrospective, single-center case series, with explicit case definition and stated denominator. No comparison, no inferential statistical analysis, no randomization. Descriptive comparisons between subgroups (recumbent animals vs. standing animals) without testing.
12 · Level of evidence
Case series — the lowest rung of the pyramid, and on this subject the highest available.
Consequence for the reader: the study establishes what was seen in 15 camelids with heat stroke, and in particular in which direction the laboratory values move. It does not establish how common it is, because there is no comparison group of camelids sick for other reasons. It does not establish what works: no treatment was compared with any other. And it does not establish diagnostic thresholds: the medians published here describe fifteen animals, they do not define a criterion.
Chapter 14 §1.3 requires the sentence be written in full, and here it is: «case series» does not mean «weak evidence to view with suspicion» — it means that this is, as of the date of this record, essentially everything that exists on heat stroke in the camelid with laboratory data and necropsy findings.
Dichiarato dagli autori: no.
13 · Relevant reporting standard
CARE, the case report checklist, applied retroactively to the series; secondarily STROBE for the descriptive part on population and selection. Stated by the authors: no.
14 · Metodo
Selezione. L'inclusione richiedeva:
- nessuna malattia preesistente;
- segni clinici comparsi dopo esposizione a un ambiente caldo;
- temperatura rettale superiore a 39,4 °C all'ammissione o alla comparsa dei segni — criterio citato per esteso: «Criteria for selection included a rectal temperature greater than 39.4 °C at admission or at the onset of clinical signs»;
Nessuna analisi statistica inferenziale. Nessun calcolo di numerosità. Numero di sedi: una.
14 · Method
Selection. South American camelids older than 6 months presented to the Texas A&M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital between January 2003 and June 2011. Inclusion required:
- no pre-existing disease;
- clinical signs arising after exposure to a hot environment;
- rectal temperature above 39.4 °C at admission or at onset of signs — criterion quoted in full: «Criteria for selection included a rectal temperature greater than 39.4 °C at admission or at the onset of clinical signs»;
- plus at least two of: creatine kinase > 476 U/L, sodium > 148 mmol/L, or a diagnosis of heat stress made by the clinician → this fourth condition is reported from a single reading pass,
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]for the exact wording.
Of 327 camelids presented in the period, 15 met the definition. The authors cite the stringent selection as the cause of the small sample size, and state it among the limitations.
Data collected: signalment; month of presentation; weather data of the animal's environment of origin; physical examination findings; complete blood count and clinical chemistry at admission; treatments; complications during hospitalization; outcome; necropsy and histopathology findings in animals that underwent necropsy.
A methodological point the authors state and that weighs on the whole record: the laboratory did not have its own reference intervals for clinical chemistry, and published intervals from elsewhere were used. They write this among the limitations, and the record repeats it next to the numbers, not only at the end.
No inferential statistical analysis. No sample size calculation. Number of sites: one.
15 · Risultati (dati)
Ambiente.
Temperatura corporea. Alla comparsa dei segni, riferita per 8 dei 15 casi: mediana 41,8 °C (37,2-42,7). All'arrivo in clinica: mediana 39,8 °C (36,1-41,6).
Esame fisico all'ammissione.
In questi 15 camelidi succede l'opposto su entrambi i fronti.
|---|---|---|
| Creatinchinasi (CK) | 5.514 U/L (553-44.497) | 14-238 U/L |
| Aspartato aminotransferasi (AST) | 3.563 U/L (404-15.375) | 127-420 U/L |
E la differenza fra chi era a terra e chi no, riportata dagli autori senza test statistico:
| Sottogruppo | CK mediana | AST mediana |
|---|---|---|
| In decubito (n = 8) | 7.070 U/L (652-44.497) | 7.500 U/L (1.654-15.375) |
| In stazione (n = 7) | 3.459 U/L (377-9.880) | 750 U/L (404-3.613) |
Altri valori riportati: glucosio medio 11,99 mmol/L (7,16-19,09) [riferimento 4,1-8,55]; creatinina media 167,96 µmol/L (97,24-786,76); magnesio medio 0,78 mmol/L (0,37-0,99) [riferimento 0,82-1,44]; GGT media 31 U/L (13-57) [riferimento 3-28]; proteine totali medie 55 g/L (35-76) [riferimento 51-78]; globuline medie 27 g/L (19-35) [riferimento 11-30]; leucociti mediani 12,6 × 10⁹/L [riferimento 8-21]; linfociti mediani 648/mm³ [riferimento 689-4.848]; MCHC mediana 491 g/L [riferimento 393-468]; anisocitosi in 10 casi su 15; piastrine agglutinate in 5 su 15, piastrine adeguate in 10 su 15; alterazioni tossiche dei neutrofili in 3 su 15.
- Bulbo: esaminato in 5, in 1 alterazioni assonali simili a quelle midollari; nessuna alterazione significativa nelle altre aree encefaliche.

Environment. Weather values associated with the 15 cases: median mean temperature 28.8 °C (26.7-31.6), median maximum temperature 33.9 °C (31.1-37.2); median mean humidity 67 % (52-80), median maximum humidity 89 % (74-100). The authors also report a heat stress index (HSI): mean 151 (132-169), maximum 182 (162-199) — the formula by which the index is calculated was not verified through two passes → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
It is worth pausing on these figures before reading the rest. A maximum of 33.9 °C and 89 % maximum humidity are not an exotic climate: they are August in the Po Valley, and they are July in much of Italy. The record returns to this in the commentary.
Body temperature. At the onset of signs, reported for 8 of the 15 cases: median 41.8 °C (37.2-42.7). On arrival at the clinic: median 39.8 °C (36.1-41.6). The two medians are two degrees apart, and the minimum on arrival is 36.1 °C: some animals arrived normothermic or hypothermic.
Physical examination at admission. Median heart rate 76 beats/min (40-160); median respiratory rate 40 breaths/min (16-100); recumbent at admission in 8 of 15 camelids; scrotal edema in 3 of 8 males; recently shorn 1 of 15; previous episode of heat stress 2 of 15; cooling already begun before arrival 4 of 15.
The four values that overturn the expectation
These are the findings the authors themselves describe as novel. All values are for South American camelids (7 llamas and 8 alpacas); in square brackets the reference interval used by the authors, which — they state — is not from their own laboratory but taken from the literature.
Parameter Value in the 15 cases Reference interval used Direction Packed cell volume (PCV) median 21.3 % (10.9-30) 27-45 % below Hemoglobin median 112 g/L 119-194 g/L below Albumin 27 g/L (16-44) 31-52 g/L below Sodium 139.5 mmol/L (118-151) 148-158 mmol/L below The heat stroke one expects — the kind seen in dogs and humans — brings hemoconcentration and hypernatremia. In these 15 camelids the opposite happens on both fronts.
Muscle damage, which instead is in the expected direction, and massively so:
| Parameter | Value in the 15 cases | Reference interval used |
|---|---|---|
| Creatine kinase (CK) | 5,514 U/L (553-44,497) | 14-238 U/L |
| Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) | 3,563 U/L (404-15,375) | 127-420 U/L |
And the difference between those recumbent and those not, reported by the authors without a statistical test:

⚠️ Some reference intervals in table 2, as rendered on the page, are internally implausible — for example that of eosinophils (647-4,867/mm³, higher than that of segmented neutrophils) and that of azotemia (3.21-47.84 mmol/L). They were not used in this record and are marked
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. A column misalignment in the table's rendering is plausible, but it cannot be ruled out from the article, and the authors themselves warn that the intervals are not from their own laboratory. The four values in the box above, those for CK and AST, and the outcome counts, were instead verified in two independent readings requesting literal citation.
A subgroup that explains hypoalbuminemia better than any hypothesis. None of the survivors had pleural, peritoneal, or pericardial effusion; the 3 animals with third-space losses had albumin of 25, 29, and 31 g/L. And males with scrotal edema had median albumin 20 g/L (16-25) versus 27 g/L (19-44) for the others.
Complications during hospitalization. Clinical signs of pneumonia in 5 of 15 cases; kidney disease in 1 of 15 (creatinine 786.76 µmol/L); anthelmintics administered to 9 of 15; McMaster fecal count performed in 5, of which 4 had more than 500 coccidian oocysts or strongyle eggs per gram.
Outcome. 7 of 15 camelids discharged alive; 6 of 15 euthanized; 2 of 15 died in hospital. The authors calculate a mortality of about 53 % (8 of 15) and note that it is similar to that reported in humans and dogs, close to 50 %.
- Days recumbent, discharged: median 1 (0-12). Non-survivors (n = 8): median 4.5 (1-14).
- Length of hospitalization, discharged (n = 7): median 6 days (0-45). Non-survivors (n = 8): median 2.5 days (0.5-14).
- Persistent thermal dysregulation in 2 of the 7 discharged, and one of these took 40 days to regain thermoregulation.

- Kidney: in 1 animal marked tubular necrosis with intratubular myoglobin casts.

16 · Interpretazione degli autori
Gli autori dichiarano come nuovi tre reperti, ed è la frase che l'abstract riassume: «Novel findings include decreased packed cell volume and albumin concentration and mild spinal axonal degeneration». E aggiungono la conseguenza pratica: «Heat stress should be considered in weak camelids with a history of hyperthermia».
16 · Authors' interpretation
The authors state three findings as novel, and this is the sentence the abstract summarizes: «Novel findings include decreased packed cell volume and albumin concentration and mild spinal axonal degeneration». And they add the practical consequence: «Heat stress should be considered in weak camelids with a history of hyperthermia».
The authors frame the physiology by recalling that camelids evolved for temperatures below 20 °C with reduced capacity for thermoregulation at high temperatures, and that the «thermal windows» — ventral abdomen, axilla, inguinal region — lose efficacy when temperature and humidity together cancel out radiation, conduction, and convection. (The description of the thermal windows is the authors' own and rests on the physiological literature they cite, not on measurements from this study.)
The authors note that the prior literature describes the opposite of what they found — hemoconcentration, electrolyte imbalances, muscle necrosis, reduced serum proteins — and that prior scientific documentation was minimal.
The authors state that hyponatremia is common in South American camelids with heat stress and that it differs from what is described in dogs and humans, and state that they do not know why: they write that the reason for hyponatremia and hypoalbuminemia in camelids «is unclear» and «warrants further research». This is a statement of ignorance, and it is the most useful piece of their discussion.
The authors hypothesize that the platelet agglutination observed in 5 of 15 cases might indicate a heat-stroke-related coagulopathy. Hypothesis, not finding: no coagulation tests were performed.
On the spinal axonal degeneration, the authors are explicit about the limit of their own inference: the finding is not described in other species with heat stroke, a heat-related mechanism is possible, but migration of Parelaphostrongylus tenuis cannot be excluded. The parasite is endemic in North America and is not endemic in Italy; the record returns to this point in field 18.
The authors note that the picture of progressive weakness suggests a neurological component in addition to the myopathy.
17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori
«One limitation of this study is that the sample size was small due to the stringent selection criteria used to exclude other disease. This could bias some of the results. Also, established reference intervals for biochemical analyses are not available at our laboratory, and therefore published parameters were used.»
17 · Limitations stated by the authors
The article has a statement of limitations, brief, and it should be quoted in full because it is brief:
«One limitation of this study is that the sample size was small due to the stringent selection criteria used to exclude other disease. This could bias some of the results. Also, established reference intervals for biochemical analyses are not available at our laboratory, and therefore published parameters were used.»
Two limitations, and both carry weight: the sample size, small by construction, and the borrowed reference intervals.
Il finanziamento è dichiarato (assente); i conflitti no.
18 · Limitations added by the editors
- The authors' second limitation is more serious than they state, and this must be said. The whole message of the article — «hematocrit is low, albumin is low, sodium is low» — is a comparison between the measured values and reference intervals that do not belong to that laboratory, that instrument, or that population. The CRL-A-01 record in this series documents that in camelids the instrument is part of the data, and in particular that hematocrit and MCHC measured automatically can differ systematically from reference methods. The median MCHC of this series — 491 g/L against a reference of 393-468 — is exactly the type of value that work teaches not to take at face value without knowing which analyzer produced it. None of this cancels the finding — a median PCV of 21.3 % with a minimum of 10.9 % is not a calibration artifact — but it shifts the question: the direction is solid, the magnitude is not.
- There is no comparison group at all, and this limits what can be said more than the sample size does. A camelid severely ill from any cause and treated with intravenous fluids can have low PCV and albumin. Without a group of critically ill camelids not due to heat, one cannot know how much of these three findings is «heat stroke» and how much is «critically ill camelid in intensive care».
- The chronology relative to fluid therapy is missing. Eleven of 15 animals received intravenous fluids. If the baseline samples, or part of them, were taken after fluid therapy began, part of the hemodilution is iatrogenic. The article does not say whether the admission laboratory work preceded the fluids →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. - Dehydration is documented only indirectly. If these animals were dehydrated — and clinically they were — one would expect high total protein; it is normal (55 g/L, reference 51-78) with globulins at or above the interval (27 g/L, reference 11-30) and low albumin. The picture is consistent with a selective loss of albumin (the three animals with effusions, the scrotal edema in males with median albumin 20 g/L), which is the most economical explanation and one the authors come close to without stating it as such.
- The spinal axonal degeneration is not interpretable outside North America. The authors themselves do not exclude Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, which in Texas is a real differential diagnosis and in Italy is not. For an Italian reader the finding is therefore less confusable but also less confirmed: no one has yet looked for it in European camelids with heat stroke.
- Parasite burden is an undiscussed confounder. 9 of 15 animals received anthelmintics, and 4 of the 5 fecal counts exceeded 500 eggs or oocysts per gram. A strongyle burden — Haemonchus foremost — is in itself a cause of anemia and hypoalbuminemia. With four positive counts out of five performed, this is a concrete alternative explanation for two of the three findings stated as novel, and the article does not address it.
- The case definition includes a circular criterion. Among the entry conditions is «a diagnosis of heat stress», i.e. the clinician's judgment. A case is a case in part because someone had already called it that: this is unavoidable in a retrospective study, but it must be stated.
- No conflict-of-interest statement. Funding is stated (none); conflicts are not.
19 · Finanziamento
Nessuno, dichiarato per esteso: «No funding was obtained (grant or otherwise) to perform this study». L'articolo ringrazia inoltre «Dr. Noah Cohen for assistance» e dichiara che i risultati furono presentati in forma di abstract all'ACVIM Forum di New Orleans, Louisiana, nel giugno 2012.
19 · Funding
None, stated in full: «No funding was obtained (grant or otherwise) to perform this study». The article also thanks «Dr. Noah Cohen for assistance» and states that the results were presented in abstract form at the ACVIM Forum in New Orleans, Louisiana, in June 2012.
20 · Conflicts of interest
Not stated. No conflict-of-interest statement appears on the article page. Chapter 14 §5.4 requires this to be written rather than leaving the field blank: the absence of the statement is itself the information, and in a 2014 series in an association journal it is common and not suspicious.
21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard
Relative to CARE (adapted to a series) and to STROBE for the descriptive part:
- Case-by-case chronology (CARE 7). There is no individual timeline: how much time between exposure, onset of signs, first cooling, and arrival? We know that 4 of 15 had already been cooled, not when or how.
- Interventions with dose and route (CARE 9a). Twelve different drugs named, zero doses.
- Differential diagnosis discussed (CARE 8c). Excluding «pre-existing disease» is not a differential diagnosis: the parasite burden documented in 4 of 5 counts is not discussed as an alternative cause of anemia and hypoalbuminemia.
- Selection flow diagram (STROBE 13a). There is the denominator (327) and there is the included (15); there are not the reasons for exclusion of the 312.
- Conflict-of-interest statement. Absent.
- Provenance of the reference intervals, item by item. The authors honestly state that they are taken from the literature, but do not say from which source for which parameter: without that reference no one can recheck.
- No gap found, instead, on: explicit case definition, starting denominator, period and setting, necropsy findings by organ with counts, outcome with counts, funding statement, and limitations statement. The starting denominator is a point on which this article is better than CRL-H-01 and CRL-H-02, which lack it.
22-24 · Giudizio — riquadro separato
22 · Commento redazionale — riquadro dell'associazione
23 · Valutazione a stelle

Why this record is the most important in the issue for Italy, despite scoring three stars out of four axes.
Because it describes an event that occurs in Italy every summer and that we are probably misclassifying. The weather data of the series — mean 28.8 °C, maximum 33.9 °C, maximum humidity 89 % — do not describe deep Texas: they describe an August in the Po Valley and half the peninsula. An alpaca does not need a desert to go into crisis; our July with still air is enough.
The reversal, which is the one thing to memorize from this record. The Italian vet was trained on dogs and humans, where heat stroke means hemoconcentration, hypernatremia, high hematocrit. In these 15 camelids the opposite happens: median PCV 21.3 % against a reference of 27-45, sodium 139.5 mmol/L against 148-158, albumin 27 g/L against 31-52. Whoever arrives at the bedside with the dog schema looks at those numbers and concludes «this is not heat stroke, it's anemia» — and starts looking for Mycoplasma haemolamae, or hemorrhage, or an ulcer. They search for the wrong thing while the animal is cooled too little and too late. The reverse is equally true and equally costly: faced with a PCV of 21 % in a weak camelid in August, «heat stroke» must be on the list, not off it.
The second clinical takeaway is the temperature on arrival. Median 39.8 °C, with a minimum of 36.1 °C. At the onset of signs the median was 41.8 °C. A camelid with heat stroke can arrive at the clinic normothermic, or cold, simply because time has passed or because someone wetted it down. A normal rectal temperature does not rule out anything, and environmental history — what was the weather, where was the animal, was there shade, was there wind — is worth more than the thermometer.
The third is for those who shear. Only one animal out of fifteen had been recently shorn. That is too small a number to say anything about the protective effect of shearing, and this record does not say it. We flag it because it is the question every breeder asks in June, and because no one has studied it: fourteen of fifteen cases in non-recently-shorn animals are an observation without a denominator, not a measure of risk. Anyone citing it as evidence that shearing protects would be making exactly the error chapter 14 §5.3 prohibits.
Where we ask for more. Two questions remain open, and both are within reach of an Italian study conducted without touching a single additional animal. The first: how much of that low PCV is heat stroke and how much is parasitosis? In this series 4 of 5 fecal counts were above 500 eggs per gram, and no one looked the issue in the face. The second: was the sample taken before or after fluids? Eleven of fifteen animals received intravenous fluids, and a hematocrit measured after two liters of crystalloids is a different number. These two extra columns in a prospective collection would be enough to make the finding far stronger than it is now.
A prognostic finding that is not in the abstract. Two of the seven discharged animals retained thermal dysregulation, and one took 40 days to regain thermoregulation. This is the information the owner needs on the evening of discharge: the animal that leaves alive is not necessarily the same animal as before, and for weeks it will need to be kept in the shade as if it were still sick — because, as far as thermoregulation goes, it is.
Our operational position, for members. From June to September, faced with a weak or recumbent camelid: first ask what the weather has been and where the animal was, then take the temperature — knowing it may be normal —, and send together complete blood count, CK, AST, sodium, albumin, and a fecal count. The package costs little and distinguishes between the two hypotheses that resemble each other in this species. A CK of 5,000 U/L in an alpaca in August is not a pasture accident: it is heat myopathy until proven otherwise, and it is more severe in those recumbent (median 7,070 U/L versus 3,459).
23 · Star rating
Axis Score Rationale A · Scientific quality ★★★☆☆ Case series with stated n (15), explicit and quantitative selection criteria, published starting denominator (327), basic descriptive analysis, necropsy and histology findings reported by organ with counts, stated limitations, and stated funding: this is the third rung of the grid. It does not rise to four because there is no comparison group, no statistical test, no conflict-of-interest statement, and above all because the reference intervals are not the authors' own laboratory's — which is the foundation on which the main finding rests. B · Clinical utility ★★★☆☆ Offers a replicable, near-zero-cost procedure — recognizing heat stroke in a weak camelid with a compatible environmental history, knowing that PCV, sodium, and albumin go down and that the temperature on arrival can be normal — described in sufficient detail and to be used with the caution the level demands. It does not rise to four because no treatment is compared with any other and the article does not report a single dose: the grid (§11, axis B) prohibits going beyond the third star when protocols are not reported in full. C · Educational value ★★★★★ First-choice educational reference on the subject in the species: anyone who needs to learn what heat stroke is in a camelid starts here, because there is nothing else with laboratory data and necropsy findings together. It also teaches the hardest lesson of comparative medicine — that a picture known in another species can present reversed — and it teaches it with four numbers. D · Relevance to the species ★★★☆☆ Study on South American camelids, with a stated breakdown (7 llamas, 8 alpacas), in a common clinical setting: companion and fiber animals referred to a hospital, not an extensive system. Moderate generalizability: single-center, 15 animals, and with a local confounder — Parelaphostrongylus tenuis — that the European reader must know to set aside. The weather data, on the other hand, are fully comparable to an Italian summer, and that is why it does not drop to two. A = 3 and C = 5 are not a contradiction, and the grid provides for this: the fifth, educational star does not reward rigor but the fact that, on this question in this species, one starts here and there is nowhere else to start.
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that, in 15 South American camelids (7 llamas and 8 alpacas) selected from 327 presented to a Texas university hospital between 2003 and 2011 with rectal temperature above 39.4 °C after heat exposure and with no pre-existing disease, admission values ran in the opposite direction to that expected from heat stroke in dogs and humans: median hematocrit 21.3 % (reference 27-45), median hemoglobin 112 g/L (119-194), albumin 27 g/L (31-52), sodium 139.5 mmol/L (148-158); that muscle damage was instead massive and in the expected direction (CK 5,514 U/L, reference 14-238; AST 3,563 U/L, reference 127-420) and greater in recumbent animals; that the median temperature on arrival was 39.8 °C versus 41.8 °C at onset of signs, with a minimum of 36.1 °C; that 7 of 15 were discharged alive, 6 euthanized, and 2 died; and that, of the 5 spinal cords examined histologically, all 5 showed minimal to mild axonal degeneration, with skeletal muscle necrosis in all 7 animals examined.
It cannot be concluded that these values are specific to heat stroke: there is no comparison group, and a camelid critically ill from another cause was not measured. It cannot be concluded by how much the values deviate from normal, because the reference intervals are not the authors' own laboratory's and some, as rendered on the page, are internally implausible →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. It cannot be excluded that part of the anemia and hypoalbuminemia is due to parasite burden (4 of 5 fecal counts above 500 eggs or oocysts per gram) or to fluid therapy, given that 11 of 15 animals received intravenous fluids and the chronology of sampling is not published. No cooling protocol nor any dosing can be derived: the article names twelve drugs and doses none of them →[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. It cannot be concluded that shearing is protective: only one animal out of 15 had been recently shorn, and without a denominator that number measures nothing. The spinal finding cannot be transferred to Europe: the authors themselves do not exclude Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, a North American parasite.Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 08/31/2026
