Trentuno giorni come minimo, fino a quarantuno.

Quattro cose, tutte a costo quasi nullo.

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 31/08/2026

Ovine protocols do not cover Eimeria macusaniensis, and not out of laziness: for three measured reasons, each of which would suffice on its own.

First: the oocyst does not float where the others float. Routine flotation is done at specific gravity 1.28, and at 1.28 this oocyst — 81-107 µm in length, 8-11 µm wall — is too heavy and stays at the bottom. A laboratory processing alpaca faeces with the ovine protocol can report «negative for coccidia» on an animal that is full of them. It is the single easiest error to make and the easiest to correct: ask the laboratory for a solution with specific gravity above 1.28 — supersaturated sugar at 1.33, zinc sulfate at 1.36 — or ask for sedimentation, which according to Rohbeck is as effective as flotation and which every laboratory already knows how to do for trematodes. It costs a phone call.

Second: prepatency lasts longer than any ovine control window. Thirty-one days at minimum, up to forty-one. A cria negative today may be infected and undemonstrable for a month. Any surveillance scheme built on ovine intervals — where minimum prepatency is on the order of ten days — samples into a void. And the worst fact is not the window: it is that disease precedes shedding. In Oregon, out of forty-two camelids, in seventeen oocysts were not found and the enteritis was there all the same, with early gamonts and no mature gamont. A negative, here, is not reassurance: it is often the worst moment.

Third: the count does not measure severity. Asymptomatic vicuñas at 411,600 oocysts per gram; dead alpacas with negative faeces. In the small ruminant the count guides the decision; here it guides nothing. The decision is made on signs — lethargy, weight loss, abdominal distension, constipation, and not necessarily diarrhoea, which is an inconsistent finding in adults — and on two laboratory tests that cost little: hypoproteinemia with hypoalbuminemia, which is the most consistent finding, and hyponatremia, which in camelids is rare without enteritis.

And then there is the link this card considers the thing to take home: E. macusaniensis opens the door to clostridium. Out of one hundred and eight alpacas aged two to eight weeks that died of enterotoxemia, thirty-three (30.5 %) had stages of E. macusaniensis in the intestine — and among the smallest there were ones ten days old. It is not proven that the coccidian causes enterotoxemia; the author writes it as a hypothesis and this card reports it as a hypothesis. But even if it were only a coexistence, the practical consequence does not change: in a cria that died of enterotoxemia, coccidiosis must be looked for, and in a herd with recurrent enterotoxemia it must be looked for in the living. «Infections observed even in well-managed herds», writes Rosadio. Good management is not a differential diagnosis.

The flip side, and it is what makes this the most serious pharmacological gap in the chapter: there is nothing to give. No anticoccidial is licensed for camelids, none has been titrated in this species, efficacy is declared unknown by the author, and — the worst sentence of all — no anticoccidial has a measurable effect on the late stages, which are exactly those associated with clinical disease. In other words: by construction, when the alpaca is sick the drug arrives too late. The review lists two documented failures with amprolium and sulfadimethoxine, and does not even give the dose of the three molecules a clinician today would reach for first. This card, accordingly, does not give it either.

What changes for a veterinarian in Italy, today. Four things, all at near-zero cost. (a) When sending alpaca or llama faeces to a laboratory with suspected coccidiosis, specify in writing specific gravity > 1.28 or sedimentation. Otherwise the negative result is worthless. (b) The moment of risk is transfer. Thirty animals after transport (llamas in one place, alpacas in another, possibly the same outbreak), thirty alpacas twenty days after entering a new farm, adults dead within five weeks of arrival: at a show, an outside mating, or a purchase, coccidiosis must be factored in before it appears. And since prepatency is a month, the check is done at one month, not one week. (c) Oocysts last seven years on the ground. A paddock where a cria died of coccidiosis is not clean the following spring. Cold helps — at 6-7 °C they do not sporulate — but it does not kill. (d) In a cria that died of enterotoxemia, ileal histology should be requested, not just testing for clostridium.

What this card cannot tell you. How much coccidiosis there is in Italian farms, and which species. It was not searched for, and the review does not contain it: for Europe there are three lines — two from Switzerland in 2006 with herd-level prevalence only, one from the United Kingdom without sample size. Zero lines for Italy. An Italian coprology case series using high-specific-gravity flotation would not be cutting-edge research: it would be the first data that exists.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo

«© This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US; foreign copyright protection may apply 2018 — This article is made available via the PMC Open Access Subset for unrestricted research re-use and secondary analysis in any form or by any means with acknowledgement of the original source. These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic.»

8 · Licence of the article

Unusual regime, and it must be read in full because it is not a Creative Commons licence. The <permissions> block of the JATS XML, read on 31/08/2026, states:

«© This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US; foreign copyright protection may apply 2018 — This article is made available via the PMC Open Access Subset for unrestricted research re-use and secondary analysis in any form or by any means with acknowledgement of the original source. These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic.»

Two consequences, stated because no card in the collection has encountered one like it so far:

  1. The work is a work of the United States government — the author is a USDA-ARS employee — and as such is not protected by copyright in the United States; protection abroad is possible.
  2. The PMC re-use permission is stated as time-limited, tied to the duration of the WHO declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was revoked in May 2023. The text of the permission has not been updated in the deposit. This card cites and summarizes — a lawful act under any regime — and does not reproduce tables or figures: Table 1 of the article is recalculated and re-presented, not copied, and field 18 explains why the re-presentation was necessary. The Europe PMC license field for this record is empty, consistently.

9 · Specie e soggetti

Nessun dromedario, nessun battriano. Le prevalenze citate coprono Argentina, Bolivia, Cile, Perù, Svizzera, Regno Unito, Giappone, Nuova Zelanda, Australia, Germania e Stati Uniti; le casistiche vanno da 4 guanachi semi-captivi a 3.766 alpaca morti in tre centri produttivi peruviani.

9 · Species and subjects

All four South American species: llama, alpaca, guanaco and vicuña.

⚠️ Taxonomic warning, and it is not pedantry. Dubey explicitly states in the introduction that «the generic nomenclature is controversial» and that he uses the genus Lama for all four species: the article therefore reads Lama pacos, Lama vicugna, Lama glama, Lama guanicoe. The current nomenclature for the two species descended from the vicuña is Vicugna pacos (alpaca) and Vicugna vicugna (vicuña). This card uses the current nomenclature in the text and reports Dubey's when quoting: anyone comparing the two lists without knowing this believes they are reading two different articles.

No dromedary, no bactrian. The prevalences cited cover Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Germany and the United States; the case series range from 4 semi-captive guanacos to 3,766 alpacas that died in three production centres in Peru.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

Not formulable in PICO — it is a descriptive review. The question the article addresses, in the author's words, is: to summarize information on the history, validity of Eimeria species, life cycle, pathogenicity, prevalence, epidemiology, diagnosis and control of coccidiosis in camelids, with the explicit, stated aim of making accessible a body of Peruvian literature published in local journals «not readily accessible to a wider audience».

11 · Disegno dello studio

Revisione narrativa (l'XML JATS la marca article-type="review-article"; l'autore scrive «the object of this review»).

11 · Study design

Narrative review (the JATS XML marks it article-type="review-article"; the author writes «the object of this review»). No stated search strategy, no inclusion criteria. Not evaluated with the main scale (chapter 14 §11).

12 · Level of evidence

Single-author narrative review, with value as taxonomic and expert synthesis. For the reader: (a) every figure is second-hand except where Dubey recalculates or personally examines it; (b) the selection of literature is not reproducible; (c) the therapeutic recommendations are not results of controlled studies — the author states this expressly: «the efficacy of various drugs for treating clinical coccidiosis is unknown».

An element that raises the value of this particular review above the average of its kind: the author repeatedly states the limitations of his own sources, marks a species as nomen nudum, dates a personal communication, and explicitly writes where his attempts to obtain further information failed. It is the opposite of the review that smooths over gaps.

13 · Standard di reporting pertinente

SANRA, come da capitolo 14 §4.2. L'autore non dichiara alcuno standard. Punteggio grezzo compilato dalla redazione nel campo 23.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

SANRA, as per chapter 14 §4.2. The author does not state any standard. Raw score compiled by the editorial team in field 23.

14 · Metodo

14 · Method

No stated method. The article is organized by chapters — Eimeria species, history, prevalence by host species, clinical infections, concurrent infections, stress, ante-mortem diagnosis, faecal examination, biopsy and ultrasound, other laboratory tests, post-mortem diagnosis, experimental infections, treatment — and each rests on eight summary tables with country, sample size, Eimeria species and reference.

What the author produces himself, and which must be credited: (a) the taxonomic judgment on E. peruviana (Yakimoff 1934), declared nomen nudum / species inquirenda because it has not been found again and no archival material exists; (b) the historical reconstruction of lost Peruvian literature, with a personal communication from Dr. Guillermo Leguía dated 10 January 2018; (c) direct examination of other researchers' figures to establish which species was involved.

15 · Risultati (dati)

(c) Prepatenza — Tabella 8 dell'articolo, infezioni sperimentali.

  • E. macusaniensis è trasmissibile fra guanaco, alpaca e lama (esperimenti in Tabella 8).

  • All'opposto: nella casistica dell'Oregon (Cebra e coll.

2007; Johnson e coll. 2009).

⛔ Correction to chapter 20-parassitologia-v2.md §5.1. That chapter attributes the measurements 100-110 × 77-84 µm to E. ivitaensis, prudently marking the column assignment as needing verification. The verification has been done, and the attribution is wrong: those figures belong to E. macusaniensis measured in the llama. E. ivitaensis measures 83.5-98.6 × 49.3-59.1 µm — it is therefore narrower, not larger, and the difference in width (49-59 versus 61-84 µm) is the character that separates them under the microscope together with wall thickness (4.0-4.5 versus 8.3-11.4 µm) and the micropylar cap, prominent in E. macusaniensis and absent in the original description of E. ivitaensis. The chapter must be corrected.

Author's morphological note: the five species «are so different in size and shape that they can be identified without the need for sporulation», and E. macusaniensis and E. ivitaensis are «among the largest of all Eimeria species». E. macusaniensis is described as resembling a watermelon seed or a sliced avocado.

(b) Sporulation — why cold is an ally. Oocysts of E. macusaniensis: sporulated in 9 days at 30 °C, in 21 days at 18-25 °C, and not sporulated at 6-7 °C (Rohbeck 2006, cited by Dubey). The author attributes the slowness to the wall thickness.

Author's summary: minimum prepatency 31 days for *E. macusaniensis, 16 days for *E. alpacae, 10 days for E. punoensis. *(The text of the article reads «16 days for E. lamae» here, but Table 8 has no row for E. lamae and gives 16-18 days for E. alpacae; the original work, Foreyt and Lagerquist 1992, reports «E. alpacae was 16-18 days». The 16 belongs to E. alpacae.)* The absolute minimum among all camelid Eimeria is therefore 10 days, and Dubey uses it for a precise clinical inference: since stages of E. macusaniensis were found in 10-day-old alpacas, «these findings indicate that alpacas can become infected the day they are born».

⚠️ The prepatency of E. ivitaensis does not appear in Table 8 and is not reported elsewhere → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT] — precisely: it has never been measured, as far as this review reports.

(d) Immunity and persistence — the two data points that decide pasture management.

  • Oocysts of E. macusaniensis survived for 84 months, «the longest period of any known Eimeria species» (Jarvinen 2008). Seven years.
  • Immunity is weak. In reinoculated llamas (Rohbeck 2006) infection resumed, with lengthened prepatency (37-40 days versus 32-36 at first infection), shortened patency (20-23 days after re-exposure versus 39-43 at first infection) and fewer oocysts shed. Dubey concludes that E. macusaniensis is «only weakly immunogenic».
  • E. macusaniensis is transmissible among guanaco, alpaca and llama (experiments in Table 8).

(e) The datum that overturns diagnostics: the count does not indicate severity, and disease precedes shedding.

  • «The number of oocysts detected does not correlate with clinical signs» — the author's statement, supported by seven independent papers.
  • Vicuñas in Argentina shed up to 411,600 oocysts per gram while remaining entirely asymptomatic (Cafrune et al. 2014).
  • Conversely: in the Oregon case series (Cebra et al. 2007) of 42 camelids examined by flotation, oocysts of E. macusaniensis were not found in 17, and yet enteritis associated with E. macusaniensis was confirmed histologically. In 13 camelids whose faeces did not demonstrate oocysts, early gamonts but no mature gamonts were detected: the pathophysiological explanation for the discrepancy.
  • Hence the PCR: Cebra et al. 2012 developed a species-specific ITS-based PCR for E. macusaniensis and E. lamae, without cross-reactivity between the two; in experimentally infected alpacas, oocyst DNA was detectable up to 7 days before oocysts appeared in the faeces.

(f) The most operationally important datum in the whole card: the oocyst does not float. Verbatim: «although most coccidian oocysts float in sugar or salt solutions with a specific gravity of 1.28, oocysts of E. macusaniensis are large and heavy and do not float well in these solutions. Solutions with specific gravity > 1.28 are recommended». The solutions used in the literature, with the source:

And the zero-cost alternative: «the sedimentation methods used for trematode eggs are as effective as the flotation method» (Rohbeck 2006).

(g) The rest of the diagnostics.

  • Clinical signs: lethargy, diarrhoea, abdominal distension, anorexia, weight loss, constipation and colic. «Diarrhoea is an inconsistent finding, especially in adult camelids» (Cebra et al. 2014). Several camelids with coccidiosis died suddenly.
  • Laboratory: «hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia are the most consistent finding»; hyponatremia relatively common, and a rare finding in camelids without some form of enteritis.
  • Ultrasound: local distension and increased thickness of the small intestine, particularly the ileum, as a suggestive diagnosis.
  • Post mortem: lesions most common in the ileum, most severe in the jejunum and ileum; mucosal thickening, congestion, plaques, severe hemorrhagic enteritis. ⚠️ «The intestine may also appear macroscopically normal, even in the presence of severe infection.»
  • E. macusaniensis is the only camelid species reliably identifiable in lesions; its schizont stage is unknown.

(h) The open door to clostridium. This is the most important clinical inference of the review, and it must be reported with its numbers. In 108 alpacas aged 2-8 weeks that died of Clostridium enterotoxemia in three Peruvian centres, histological sections of intestine (103 of ileum, 5 of jejunum) revealed stages of E. macusaniensis in 33 alpacas (30.5 %); of 31 alpacas of known age, three were 2 weeks old and two were only 10 days old; massive infection in 3 of 31 alpacas under 2 weeks of age; and infections were observed even in well-managed herds (Rosadio et al. 2010). Dubey concludes: «it appears that massive parasitization by E. macusaniensis in the ileal crypts predisposes camelids to other enteric pathogens, particularly toxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens».

(i) Prevalences in Europe — the only three reported, and that alone is telling:

(j) Therapy — what was used, with dose, route, species and source.

⚠️ No anticoccidial is licensed for camelids, and none of the molecules listed here has been titrated in the camelid. They are all [DOSE EXTRAPOLATED]. The author writes two sentences that must be read before any figure: «the efficacy of various drugs for treating clinical coccidiosis is unknown» and «none of the anticoccidials has a measurable effect on the late stages of gamonts and oocysts, which are the ones commonly associated with clinical coccidiosis caused by E. macusaniensis and E. ivitaensis».

Why this card does not write a figure for ponazuril, diclazuril and toltrazuril. These are the molecules the author describes as «generally of low toxicity» and «widely used in countries where they are available in a practical form of administration»: that is, the ones an Italian veterinarian would reach for first. This review does not give their dose. The house rule is that a dosage is only written with dose + route + species + source together. Here the dose is missing, and therefore the figure is not given. Whoever needs it should look it up in the species treatise and state its source — not take it from this card, which does not have it.

(k) The two documented therapeutic failures, reported by the review:

  1. An entire herd of 30 alpacas that developed coccidiosis 20 days after introduction into a new farm, treated with amprolium hydrochloride: two deaths and four euthanized; of these, two of the deaths had histologically confirmed coccidiosis (Cebra et al. 2007). ⚠️ Internal discrepancy in the article, flagged by the editorial team: in the chapter on clinical infections the same episode is described as «six additional alpacas became ill within 13 days; four of these died and were necropsied», and oocysts appeared in the faeces of five alpacas 37 days after the transfer. The two descriptions of the same outbreak do not match on the number of deaths → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT] of Cebra et al. 2007, not opened in this session.
  2. A case that reached jejunal biopsy, which died despite therapy with sulfadimethoxine. (The review reports that «some camelids died despite this therapy and had histologically confirmed coccidiosis».)

Epidemiological note explaining both: transport stress and change of ownership or location predisposes to coccidiosis. «In one case, 30 llamas developed clinical coccidiosis after transport to a new farm» (Cebra et al. 2007; ⚠️ the article writes «30 alpacas» for the treatment and «30 llamas» here, and in its chapter on Cebra's work the outbreak is described in alpacas only: it cannot be shown that they are the same episode or which species is right, because the full text of Cebra 2007 is not open access and its abstract does not say); adult alpacas developed fatal coccidiosis within 5 weeks of transport to a new farm (Chigerwe et al. 2007; Johnson et al. 2009).

16 · Authors' interpretation

The author concludes that coccidiosis «can be severe in captive camelids», while under free-range conditions in South America camelids «can shed numerous oocysts in their faeces without showing clinical signs». This is the sentence that frames the entire problem: it is a disease of confinement, not of the parasite.

The author states that the pathogenesis is not understood: «the pathogenesis of fatal coccidiosis is not fully understood, because even adult camelids can die suddenly, and animals can develop clinical signs well before oocysts are detected in the faeces».

The author hypothesizes — explicit attribution, not a result — that «massive parasitization by E. macusaniensis in the ileal crypts predisposes camelids to other enteric pathogens, particularly toxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens».

The author closes with a request, not a recommendation: «in summary, therapeutic treatment of coccidiosis in South American camelids needs validation». And he adds an open question that applies to Europe as much as to the Americas: «whether there are differences in the biology of Eimeria species in North and South American camelids needs further investigation».

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations stated by the authors

The article does not have a dedicated section, but it contains an unusually high number of explicit admissions, which must be quoted:

  • On E. peruviana (Yakimoff 1934): «it appears there was confusion with other faeces sent by Iwanoff, since E. peruviana was never found again subsequently. Since no archived specimens exist, this issue cannot be resolved retrospectively. I consider it nomen nudum / species inquirenda.»
  • On the Peruvian literature: the original works «were published in local journals or conference proceedings and are no longer available because the archives have been eliminated» — with a personal communication from Dr. Guillermo Leguía dated 10 January 2018.
  • On Rojas et al. 2016: «it is uncertain whether the diagnosis of Eimeria infection was based only on faecal examination or on histology… my attempts to obtain further information on the endogenous stages were unsuccessful.»
  • On Mamani Paredes et al. 2009 (3,766 alpacas): «however, this survey lacked a critical assessment of etiology».
  • On Hertzberg and Kohler 2006: «only herd-level prevalence stated», and for Swiss alpacas «no individual data».
  • On endogenous stages: «the schizont stage of E. macusaniensis is unknown»; for E. lamae «I found no description of the endogenous stages».
  • On Table 1: the number of specimens measured by Leguía and Casas (1998) and by Schrey et al. (1991) was not stated by the original authors.

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

18 · Limitations added by the editorial team

  1. No search strategy: a structural limitation of the genre, and the reason for the four-star cap on axis A.
  2. Prevalence data pool North and South America — the author states this («data from North and South American camelids are pooled, but infection patterns may differ») and then pools them anyway in Tables 2-5. Anyone reading those tables as a prevalence estimate is summing incompatible altitudes, climates and farming systems.
  3. European coverage is three lines, two of which are from the same 2006 Swiss study and with herd-level prevalence only. There is nothing for Italy, in this review, and not because it wasn't searched: because it hasn't been published.
  4. An internal discrepancy on the 30-alpaca outbreak (field 15k), between the clinical chapter and the therapeutic chapter of the same article.
  5. The tables do not report confidence intervals for any prevalence, and some sample sizes are «not stated» already in the primary source: the percentages must be read as observed proportions, not as estimates.
  6. The article is eight years old. In molecular parasitology eight years is a long time: Cebra's 2012 PCR may have successors today, and this review would not include them. Anyone using it as a current reference on diagnostics must update it.
  7. Non-current nomenclature (field 9): Lama pacos for the alpaca and Lama vicugna for the vicuña.

19 · Finanziamento

19 · Funding

⚠️ Not stated. The JATS XML contains no funding-group block and no Funding section. The author is an employee of the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (field 3), and the article is declared a work of the United States government (field 8): institutional public funding can be inferred from this, but it is an inference of the editorial team, not a statement by the author, and must be treated as such.

20 · Conflitti di interesse

⚠️ Non dichiarati. Nessuna sezione Competing interests, Conflict of interest o Declarations compare nell'XML JATS.

20 · Conflicts of interest

⚠️ Not stated. No Competing interests, Conflict of interest or Declarations section appears in the JATS XML. In 2018 the journal did not systematically require this for reviews; the fact remains that the information is not there, and it must be written as such and not as «no conflict». It is noted, as contextual information and not as a substitute for a declaration, that the author is a public researcher and that the article does not recommend any commercial product — indeed, it states that the efficacy of all the molecules it lists is unknown.

Unica voce a zero.

21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard (SANRA)

  • Item 3 — description of the literature search: entirely absent. The only item scoring zero.
  • Item 2 — objectives: stated as a list of topics to be summarized, not as questions.
  • Outside SANRA but within the collection's rules: a funding statement and a conflicts of interest statement are missing (fields 19 and 20).
  • Not missing, and to be credited above the average of its genre: the justification of importance is explicit and original (making accessible a lost body of literature); referencing is precise, with dated personal communications; the reasoning states the gaps instead of papering over them and goes so far as to declare a species nomen nudum; the data are presented in eight tables with country, sample size, species and reference.

23 · Valutazione a stelle

SANRA compilata dalla redazione — 9/12.

Voce SANRAPunteggioMotivo

A — Qualità scientifica★★★★☆SANRA 9/12.

23 · Star rating

SANRA compiled by the editorial team — 9/12.

SANRA itemScoreReason
1 · Justification of the topic's importance for the reader2/2Explicit and original: coccidiosis is an important cause of mortality and much of the literature is in inaccessible local Peruvian journals. Making that body of work accessible is stated as the aim.
2 · Statement of concrete objectives or formulation of questions1/2Objective stated as a list of topics to summarize (history, species validity, life cycle, pathogenicity, prevalence, epidemiology, diagnosis, control). No defined question.
3 · Description of the literature search0/2Entirely absent.
4 · Referencing2/2Precise down to dated personal communications; the author states when a source is no longer obtainable and when his attempts to obtain others failed.
5 · Scientific reasoning2/2Declares a species nomen nudum on the basis of the absence of archival material; separates what he personally examined from what he reports; flags questionable geographic pooling before doing it.
6 · Appropriate presentation of data2/2Eight tables with country, sample size, Eimeria species, notes and reference; the morphometrics report the host of origin and source for each measurement.

SANRA → star conversion per chapter 14 §11: 9-12 → ★★★★☆.

AxisScoreRationale, with one fact inside
A — Scientific quality★★★★☆SANRA 9/12. Cap from chapter 14 §11 applied: no narrative review reaches five on this axis. Also penalized, outside SANRA, by the absence of funding and conflicts statements (fields 19-20). Credited, however, for a rare trait: the author measures his own ignorance instead of hiding it.
B — Clinical usefulness★★★★☆Offers reproducible, immediately applicable diagnostic procedures: specific gravity > 1.28 or sedimentation, the one-month control window after transfer, the two guiding laboratory tests (hypoproteinemia, hyponatremia), ileal ultrasound, histology in the cria that died of enterotoxemia. It does not reach five for a precise reason: on the therapeutic side the article declares the efficacy of everything unknown, and for three molecules it does not even give the dose. A high axis B cannot rest on doses the article does not report (chapter 14 §11), and indeed it does not.
C — Educational value★★★★★Teaches three things not learned elsewhere: that a negative coprology can be an artifact of specific gravity; that oocyst count does not measure severity in this species; and — a methodological lesson — how to write a review that states its own gaps, from nomen nudum to the dated personal communication to «my attempts were unsuccessful».
D — Species relevance★★★★★A review entirely dedicated to South American camelids, all four species, with explicit separation of morphometrics obtained in the llama from those obtained in the alpaca. No data from another species is passed off as camelid. Relevance for Italy is high precisely because it shows how little is known about Europe.

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

It can be concluded that: Eimeria macusaniensis requires a diagnostic approach different from that of small ruminants for three documented reasons — its oocysts (81-107 × 61-80 µm in the alpaca, 100-110 × 77-84 µm in the llama, wall 8.3-11.4 µm) do not float well at specific gravity 1.28 and require denser solutions or sedimentation; minimum prepatency is 31 days (up to 41 experimentally), against 10 days for the fastest camelid Eimeria; and the number of oocysts does not correlate with clinical signs, so much so that in 17 of 42 camelids in an Oregon case series enteritis was histologically confirmed without oocysts in the faeces. Oocysts survive 84 months in the environment and immunity after infection is weak.

It cannot be concluded that: a therapy of known efficacy exists. The author writes that the efficacy of the drugs is unknown and that no anticoccidial has a measurable effect on the late stages, those associated with clinical disease; the only dose-route-duration reported — amprolium hydrochloride 10 mg/kg in a 1.5 % solution per os for up to 15 days, sulfadimethoxine 110 mg/kg per os for 10 days, decoquinate 0.5 mg/kg/day in feed for 4 weeks — are extrapolated, never titrated in the camelid, and associated with two documented failures. And nothing can be concluded about the Italian situation: the review contains three lines for Europe and zero for Italy.

26 · Schede CRL correlate

  • CRL-L-01 (questo fascicolo) — Hinney e coll. 2024.
«Two Centrifugal Flotation Techniques for Counting Gastrointestinal Parasite Eggs and Oocysts in Alpaca Faeces», Journal of Veterinary Research 2022;66(3):389-393, DOI 10.2478/jvetres-2022-0039 · PMID 36349129 · PMCID PMC9597935 · licenza CC BY-NC-ND (Crossref ed Europe PMC, interrogati il 31/08/2026; testo pieno non aperto in questa sessione).

26 · Related CRL cards

  • CRL-L-01 (this volume) — Hinney et al. 2024. The link is a number that neither card highlights on its own: in the seven German alpaca farms, Eimeria spp. was present in all 7 farms and in 61 % of the 224 animals, alongside strongyles. Coccidiosis is not an alternative to helminthiasis: it coexists, and anyone counting only strongyle eggs is looking without seeing it.
  • CRL-L-04 (this volume) — Sala et al. 2024. A non-obvious but real link: both cards document transfer as the moment of risk. There, an alpaca contracts mange returning from an outside mating; here, thirty alpacas develop coccidiosis twenty days after a change of location, and adults die within five weeks of arrival. The risk is not the animal: it is the movement.
  • Context on alpaca coprology, checked but not made into a card, and to be read alongside field 15f: Maria Pyziel-Serafin Anna, Raboszuk Adrianna, Klich Daniel, Orłowska Blanka, Sierociuk Dagmara, Anusz Krzysztof. «Two Centrifugal Flotation Techniques for Counting Gastrointestinal Parasite Eggs and Oocysts in Alpaca Faeces», Journal of Veterinary Research 2022;66(3):389-393, DOI 10.2478/jvetres-2022-0039 · PMID 36349129 · PMCID PMC9597935 · licence CC BY-NC-ND (Crossref and Europe PMC, queried on 31/08/2026; full text not opened in this session). ⚠️ Two warnings about the citation, and this is why it was re-checked. First: chapter 20-parassitologia-v2.md §7.1 reports a title different from the one deposited — it speaks of «confronto fra due tecniche di flottazione centrifuga» — while the record's title is the one above. The title is copied, not described. Second, and more insidious: the first author's name is deposited both in Crossref and in Europe PMC as family = "Maria Pyziel-Serafin" and given = "Anna", giving the authorString «Maria Pyziel-Serafin A». The chapter cites her as «Pyziel-Serafin AM», which is a reconstruction: it does not correspond to either record. This card reproduces the record's form and flags the anomaly — it does not correct it on its own authority, because reconstructing a name is exactly what the house rule forbids.
