Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes
- AQualità scientifica2/5
- BUtilità pratica2/5
- CValore didattico4/5
- DTrasferibilità ai camelidi europei2/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

3 · Autori
Maximiliano G. Jorge · Maturrano H. Lenin · Castillo D. Hugo · Guzmán M. Karol · Pérez J. David · Luna E. Luis · Puray C. Nidia · Rosadio A. Raúl
Maximiliano», «H. Maturrano», «A.
3 · Authors
Complete list, eight authors, in the form and order of the Crossref record:
Maximiliano G. Jorge · Maturrano H. Lenin · Castillo D. Hugo · Guzmán M. Karol · Pérez J. David · Luna E. Luis · Puray C. Nidia · Rosadio A. Raúl
None of the eight has an ORCID registered in Crossref.
The Peruvian naming convention, which is a trap for indexes and must be explained once and for all. RIVEP prints the authors in the form «Given name + paternal surname + initial of the maternal surname»: the article page reads «Jorge Maximiliano G.», «Lenin Maturrano H.», «Raúl Rosadio A.». Crossref registers the same thing inverted:
family: "Maximiliano G.",given: "Jorge".It follows that «G.», «H.», «A.» are not initials of the given name: they are initials of the second surname. Anyone treating them as initials of the given name — as anyone reading them the Anglo-Saxon way would automatically do — would get «G. Maximiliano», «H. Maturrano», «A. Rosadio»: eight people who do not exist. And anyone searching for «Rosadio R.» in an index that has filed «Rosadio A., Raúl» might not find it.
It is the same kind of error documented in the review of this KT with «Valdez Marín J.C.», and the same as «du Sert NP» in chapter 14. This fact sheet copies the form of the record and explains it, instead of normalizing it.
Proof that the trap is real: the eighth author of this fact sheet, Rosadio A. Raúl, is the same person registered in CRL-M-04 as «Rosadio Alcántara, Raúl». Two journals — or rather two volumes of the same journal — two different forms of the same name, no ORCID linking them.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo
M-01 e M-03 (fascicolo 32(3), 2021): Crossref dice CC BY, SciELO dice CC BY-NC. M-05 (fascicolo 29(2), 2018): Crossref dice CC BY-NC-SA, SciELO dice CC BY-NC. M-04 (fascicolo 35(1), 2024): concordano, CC BY.
8 · Article license
⚠️ Divergence between registrations, the fourth and last in the issue — and this is the sharpest of RIVEP's three, because the two licenses do not differ only in the non-commercial clause.
- Crossref (
works/10.15381/rivep.v29i2.14479,licensefield) declareshttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0→ CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (with an obligation to share alike)- the SciELO article page displays
creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/deed.es→ CC BY-NC 4.0 (without that obligation)The difference is not cosmetic: SA (ShareAlike) binds the derivative work to adopt the same license, and a fact sheet incorporating SA material would inherit that constraint. Publisher's page not openable (Anubis protection), so the status remains
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].What this fact sheet does, meanwhile: it applies the more restrictive one, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, and in order not to inherit its constraint the fact sheet incorporates nothing reproducible: only numerical data — not covered by copyright — and attributed short quotations, exercising the right of quotation. The four Figures are not reproduced.
The three RIVEP divergences of this issue, together. M-01 and M-03 (issue 32(3), 2021): Crossref says CC BY, SciELO says CC BY-NC. M-05 (issue 29(2), 2018): Crossref says CC BY-NC-SA, SciELO says CC BY-NC. M-04 (issue 35(1), 2024): they agree, CC BY. Three cases out of four diverge, always in the same direction — Crossref more permissive than SciELO. It is not an incident on one article: it is a systematic discrepancy between two registrations of the same journal, and anyone downloading license metadata from Crossref for RIVEP should know it.
9 · Specie e soggetti
Specie: alpaca (Vicugna pacos), neonate.
- Età: fra 5 e 21 giorni, secondo i Materiali e metodi
9 · Species and subjects
Species: alpaca (Vicugna pacos), neonates.
Phase I — construction of the physiological IgG degradation curve:
- 6 healthy neonatal alpacas, with a history of colostrum intake in the first hours of life
- origin: Centro de Investigación y Producción La Raya, Universidad Nacional del Altiplano, Santa Rosa district, Melgar province, department of Puno, Peru — the same center as fact sheet M-04
- sampling at 9 time points: days 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 of age
Clarification on a number the abstract makes ambiguous. The 9 is not the number of animals — which is 6 — but the number of sampling time points. Anyone reading «n=9» as sample size would be off by three animals in excess.
Phase II — association between failure of passive transfer and mortality:
- 43 blood samples in total: 17 dead crias with lesions compatible with enterotoxemia and 26 healthy crias that survived outbreaks of the same disease
- Age: between 5 and 21 days, according to the Materials and Methods
- origin: birthing seasons 2007-2010, in alpaca-raising communities of the departments of Puno and Cusco and at CIP-La Raya
- The healthy crias come from the same herds in which the fatal cases had occurred — a correct choice, which makes the controls comparable for environmental exposure
⚠️ Inconsistency between abstract and methods, noted by the editorial team. The abstract states the age range as «5-23 días»; the Materials and methods state «edades entre los 5 y 21 días». Two days' difference over a three-week window, in a study whose outcome depends on age because IgG decays with age, is not an indifferent slip. This fact sheet uses the Methods interval and flags the other.
The necropsy criteria and the type of microbiological analysis are not specified → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
Country: Peru, departments of Puno and Cusco.
Altitude: NOT STATED in this article. CIP La Raya is named, but this article does not report its altitude. Fact sheet CRL-M-04, on the same center, reports 4200-5500 m a.s.l.: this is a figure attributed to that other article, and is not turned here into a figure of this one. For the alpaca-raising communities of Puno and Cusco from which the other samples come, the altitude is not stated by either source →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
In neonatal alpacas aged 5-21 days from Andean herds with enterotoxemia outbreaks [P], an insufficient concentration of serum IgG (partial failure of passive transfer) [I], compared with adequate concentrations [C], is it associated with death from enterotoxemia [O]?
(The question is the authors', who state it explicitly: the study «fue diseñado para elucidar la posible asociación entre niveles insuficientes de IgG y la mortalidad por enterotoxemia en alpacas neonatas». It is the only one of the five articles in the issue with a research question already in near-PICO form.)
11 · Disegno dello studio
11 · Study design
Two distinct phases, and they must be kept distinct:
- Phase I: prospective longitudinal observational study on 6 animals, to build a reference curve
- Phase II: case-control observational study, with samples collected in the 2007-2010 birthing seasons — hence retrospective relative to publication (2018), with eight to eleven years between collection and printing
Ethical approval: not stated. No committee, no protocol → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
12 · Level of evidence
Small, multi-site case-control observational study (17 cases, 26 controls), on archived samples.
Bottom line for the reader: with 17 cases and 26 controls, and with only one animal per group below the 900 mg/dl threshold, this study has very low statistical power. A "non-significant" result here is not proof of absence of association: it is a measurement too imprecise to distinguish a strong association from no association at all. This is exactly the point on which this fact sheet diverges from the authors' conclusion (§18).
13 · Standard di reporting pertinente
STROBE (studio caso-controllo). Non dichiarato dagli autori.
13 · Relevant reporting standard
STROBE (case-control study). Not declared by the authors.
14 · Metodo
Fase I:
14 · Method
Definition of failure of passive transfer adopted, cited by the authors: serum IgG below 900 mg/dl at 48 hours of age (attributed to Garmendia et al., 1987).
Why the definition matters in this species, as the authors explain it: the alpaca has a diffuse epitheliochorial placenta, which prevents the passage of immunoglobulins from mother to fetus during gestation; crias are therefore born «prácticamente agammaglobulinémicas» and depend entirely on colostrum.
Phase I:
- sampling on days 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21
- serum obtained by centrifugation at 2500 g for 5 min, stored at −20 °C
- IgG measured by radial immunodiffusion (RID), Triple J, USA kit, specific for camelid IgG; reading of the precipitation ring diameter and comparison with the standard curve of reference sera
- exponential regression model between IgG concentration and age, to describe physiological degradation over the first three weeks
Phase II:
- dead crias: blood drawn by cardiac puncture within 5 hours of death
- healthy crias: blood from the jugular vein with a vacutainer system
- storage: the authors note that «no presentó problemas debido al frío intenso, típico de la región» — that is, the cold chain was ensured by the climate, not by equipment
- criterion for inadequate IgG: concentrations below the physiological degradation curve built in Phase I, defined as partial failure of passive transfer
- statistics: Odds Ratio with a p < 0.05 threshold for the association; Student's t-test for comparing the concentrations of the two groups; IBM SPSS Statistics 22 software
A methodological point that deserves recognition. The authors did not settle for the fixed threshold of 900 mg/dl at 48 hours: they built a reference curve for physiological decay, and then defined as "inadequate" the concentrations that fell below that curve at the corresponding age. This is methodologically finer than using a single threshold on animals aged 5-21 days, and is the greatest merit of the work. The flaw is that the curve is built on 6 animals (§18).
15 · Risultati (dati)
Fase I — 6 alpaca neonate sane:
- a 21 giorni: valori fra 366 e 1492 mg/dl
|---|---|---|
| Numerosità | 17 | 26 |
| IgG sierica media | 2361 mg/dl | 2893 mg/dl |
| Sotto la curva di degradazione | 3 / 17 | 1 / 26 |
| Sotto 900 mg/dl | 1 / 17 (899,70 mg/dl a 14 giorni) | 1 / 26 (a 19 giorni) |
15 · Results (data)
Phase I — 6 healthy neonatal alpacas:
- at 48 hours: all above 900 mg/dl, with values between 1493 and 4798 mg/dl; mean 3098 mg/dl (mean reported in the discussion)
- at 21 days: values between 366 and 1492 mg/dl
- 1 animal out of 6 (16.7 %) — indicated by the authors as «cría 3» — had lower concentrations than the others, which the authors classify as partial failure of passive transfer
Phase II — 17 crias dead of enterotoxemia versus 26 healthy crias:
| Crias dead of enterotoxemia | Surviving healthy crias | |
|---|---|---|
| Sample size | 17 | 26 |
| Mean serum IgG | 2361 mg/dl | 2893 mg/dl |
| Below the degradation curve | 3 / 17 | 1 / 26 |
| Below 900 mg/dl | 1 / 17 (899.70 mg/dl at 14 days) | 1 / 26 (at 19 days) |
The two means were compared with the t-test and are statistically similar: the article does not report the p value nor the difference with its confidence interval → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
Detail of the three cases below the curve, among the dead: two — died at 5 and at 10 days — had concentrations above 900 mg/dl; the third, died at day 14, had 899.70 mg/dl, that is «ligeramente por debajo del límite inferior».
The most telling figure in the article is that 899.70. One cria out of seventeen, dead of enterotoxemia, had 899.70 mg/dl against a threshold of 900. Thirty hundredths of a milligram per deciliter separate "partial failure of passive transfer" from "adequate." It is the clearest reminder that a dichotomous threshold on a continuous variable is an operational convention, not a biological fact.
Risk analysis, as reported: Odds Ratio 5.35; confidence interval 0.50-57.22. The authors conclude that «no existe asociación entre niveles adecuados de IgG y la mortalidad por enterotoxemia en alpacas neonatas».
Arithmetic reconstruction by the editorial team, because the article does not state the contingency table used. The OR of 5.35 is not compatible with the comparison on the 900 mg/dl threshold — 1/17 versus 1/26 would give (1/16)/(1/25) = 1.56 — but is compatible with the "below the degradation curve" comparison: 3/17 versus 1/26 gives (3/14)/(1/25) = 5.36, which coincides with the published value except for rounding.
It follows, with reasonable certainty, that the OR is calculated on the 3 and 1 "below curve" figures, not on the cases of actual failure — something the article never states explicitly. This fact sheet states that this is a reconstruction, not a claim by the authors, and marks it:
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT: which contingency table generates OR 5.35].If the reconstruction is correct, the OR rests on four animals in total, distributed in two cells of 3 and 1. This alone explains the confidence interval from 0.50 to 57.22.
⚠️ Internal inconsistency in the denominators, noted by the editorial team. In the discussion the authors write that «En estos dos últimos grupos se presentaron animales con niveles de IgG menores a 900 mg/dl a partir de los 15 días de edad (1/17 y 1/26 animales, respectivamente)». But «estos dos últimos grupos», in the preceding sentence, are the six healthy animals of Phase I and the 26 healthy animals of Phase II: the denominator 17 belongs to the group of the dead, not to Phase I. Either the denominator is wrong, or the reference to the groups is. This fact sheet flags it and does not choose.
⚠️ Second inconsistency, between results and conclusions. The article's fourth conclusion states that «Los niveles de IgG permanecen superiores a los 900 mg/dl hasta los 18 días de edad en crías aparentemente saludables». But the Phase I results give, at 21 days, a range of 366-1492 mg/dl — hence with animals below 900 — and the discussion states animals below 900 mg/dl starting from 15 days. The three statements do not hold together.
16 · Interpretazione degli autori
Attribuita, non fusa con i dati.
Le cinque conclusioni dell'articolo, per esteso:
- i sei cria usati per costruire la curva avevano concentrazioni adeguate di IgG a 48 ore;
- «Los niveles de IgG permanecen superiores a los 900 mg/dl hasta los 18 días de edad en crías aparentemente saludables» (ma si veda §15);
- uno dei cria morti di enterotossiemia aveva 899,70 mg/dl a 14 giorni, sotto la soglia di protezione;
- «La prueba de Odds Ratio no evidenció a la concentración deficiente de IgG sérica como factor de riesgo a morir por enterotoxemia»;
16 · Authors' interpretation
Attributed, not merged with the data.
The article's five conclusions, in full:
- the six crias used to build the curve had adequate IgG concentrations at 48 hours;
- «Los niveles de IgG permanecen superiores a los 900 mg/dl hasta los 18 días de edad en crías aparentemente saludables» (but see §15);
- one of the crias dead of enterotoxemia had 899.70 mg/dl at 14 days, below the protection threshold;
- «La prueba de Odds Ratio no evidenció a la concentración deficiente de IgG sérica como factor de riesgo a morir por enterotoxemia»;
The authors interpret their data as a refutation of the Garmendia et al. (1987) model, which associated neonatal enterotoxemia with inadequate maternal IgG concentrations: «estas fatalidades no serían consecuencias de fallas en la transferencia pasiva».
The authors put forward an alternative hypothesis to explain the concentrations that were nonetheless lower in the dead animals: «Los menores niveles de IgG de los animales muertos por enterotoxemia sugieren un gasto de IgG en afán de contrarrestar infecciones microbianas» — that is, consumption, not deficiency. It is a hypothesis, and the authors present it as such.
The authors place their own 16.7 % partial failure rate (1/6, Phase I) among the values reported by others: similar to Garnica and Bravo (2001) and Weaver et al. (2000a), higher than the 9 % of Garmendia et al. (1987) and Bravo et al. (1997), and attribute the difference to the «mayor número de muestras utilizado en dichos estudios».
The authors cite from the literature, as data measured by others and not measured here: the neonatal enteric complex can affect up to 70 % of crias during epizootic periods (Ameghino and De Martini, 1991); 9 % (11/82) failure in crias from Puno (Garmendia et al., 1987); 15 % of alpacas and 20 % of llamas in the Americas with failure (Weaver et al., 2000a,b); 6 crias with IgG below 1000 mg/dl out of 150 llamas and 300 alpacas (Bravo et al., 1997); 1 out of 77 (Flodr et al., 2012).
The authors describe enterotoxemia as dysbiosis, not as a simple infection: an interaction between two or more microbial agents that triggers an intestinal dysbiosis with excessive proliferation of Clostridium perfringens type A, production of phospholipase C and, to a lesser extent, of β2 exotoxin.
17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori
17 · Limitations declared by the authors
The article has no "Limitations" section and states no limitation of its own. It is the sharpest case in the issue: a study that publishes a negative result on 17 cases nowhere notes that 17 cases may not be enough.
18 · Limitations added by the editorial team
The first is the most important, and is the reason this fact sheet exists in this form.
- "No association" and "association not measurable" are not the same sentence. The confidence interval of the OR runs from 0.50 to 57.22. An interval that contains 0.5 (a halved protective effect) and 57 (a fifty-sevenfold risk) excludes nothing: it is compatible with no effect, with a strong protective effect, and with a very strong risk effect. The point estimate is moreover 5.35, that is, in the direction of increased risk. The correct conclusion from these numbers is "we were unable to measure the association", not "the association does not exist." The authors write the latter. This fact sheet dissents, and states it as the editorial team's dissent, not as a finding of the article.
- The contingency table for the OR is not stated (§15). The editorial team's reconstruction places it on four animals in total.
- The reference curve is built on 6 animals, and it is the yardstick against which all the other 43 are judged. A methodological merit resting on a tiny base: no confidence band around the curve is reported, and without a band "below the curve" is a judgment with no stated uncertainty.
- Eight to eleven years between collection (2007-2010) and publication (2018). The sera were stored at −20 °C; no verification of IgG stability after years at that temperature is reported, nor the date the RID was performed →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. If the samples from the dead and the healthy animals had been stored for different lengths of time, differential degradation would be a direct confounder on the only variable measured. - Two different sampling matrices between the groups. The dead animals were sampled by cardiac puncture within 5 hours of death; the healthy ones by jugular venipuncture in vivo. These are two biologically different samples — hemolysis, post-mortem changes, dilution — and no assessment of the effect of this difference on the RID is reported. The comparison between the two means is potentially biased as a result, and the direction of the bias is not predictable.
- Non-standardized case definition: "compatible lesions" at field necropsy and unspecified "microbiological analyses." It is not stated whether the toxin, the genotype, or only isolation was sought — and in a setting where C. perfringens is a gut commensal, that difference is the diagnosis.
- No control of confounders: age, herd of origin, campaign year. On a variable that decays with age, and with cases and controls described only as "of similar ages," the lack of age-adjusted analysis is a substantial gap.
- Internal inconsistencies on age range (5-23 versus 5-21 days), denominators (1/17 versus 1/26) and duration of protection (18 days versus 15) — §9 and §15.
- No ethical approval declared (§11); no conflict-of-interest declaration (§20).
- The result does not disprove the importance of colostrum. This is a reading someone might draw from it, and it would be the exact opposite of what the data show: in this study almost all the crias, dead or alive, had high IgG — that is, they had received colostrum. The study does not compare crias with colostrum against crias without: it compares two groups that almost all received it. It says nothing about what happens to those who do not receive it, and this fact sheet states this to prevent misreading.

A network note, of interest to this association. The presence of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid among the supporters is the only European trace in the whole issue. It is an institutional bridge already existing between Andean camelid research and a European Union university, and is the kind of information that KT chapter 13 (research and network) exists to collect.

- Confondenti (voci 7 e 16): nessuno controllato, nemmeno l'età
- Limitazioni (voce 19): assenti
- Finanziamento: presente (voce 22); conflitti: assenti
- le IgG di un cria di alpaca sano a 48 ore stanno fra 1493 e 4798 mg/dl, con media 3098 — un intervallo di riferimento misurato nella specie, non estrapolato dal vitello;
- decadono, e a 21 giorni possono già essere sotto la soglia di 900 mg/dl;
Chiunque abbia mai scritto «FPT: sì/no» su una cartella clinica dovrebbe tenere quel numero a mente.

23 · Valutazione a stelle
Vincolo incrociato rispettato (B ≤ A + 2).
21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard (STROBE)
- Design not named (item 4): the word "case-control" never appears
- Case and control definition (item 6): present but not operational — "compatible lesions" is not a reproducible criterion
- Data sources and measurement methods for each group (item 8): the difference in matrix between the groups (cardiac puncture versus jugular) is declared but never discussed as a possible source of differential error. It is the most serious STROBE gap in the article
- Sample size (item 10): no calculation, no justification. In a study publishing a negative result, the absence of a power calculation is the gap that makes the conclusion unsustainable
- Confounders (items 7 and 16): none controlled, not even age
- Main results with their precision (item 16): the p value of the t-test is not reported, the difference between the means has no confidence interval
- Limitations (item 19): absent
- Funding: present (item 22); conflicts: absent
- Faithful abstract (item 1b): the abstract's age range contradicts that of the methods
Not missing, and it should be said: the construction of the species-specific reference curve (§14), which no checklist requires and which is the best part of the work.
22 · Association's commentary
This is, of the five, the fact sheet in which the editorial team dissents from the authors — and that is why it was worth doing.
The authors did something difficult and useful: they took a dogma of their field — failure of passive transfer as the cause of alpaca neonatal mortality, established by Garmendia in 1987 — and went to measure it. They built a species-specific reference curve instead of using a borrowed threshold. They published a negative result, which is the category of result that least often finds a place in a journal. All of this must be acknowledged before any objection.
And then they wrote, on a confidence interval running from 0.5 to 57, that the association does not exist. That sentence cannot be drawn from that number. Seventeen dead crias, three of which below the curve, and only one below the 900 threshold: that is too few animals to rule anything out. The conclusion the data support is more modest and equally interesting: most of the crias that die of enterotoxemia in these herds received colostrum and have high IgG. That is: colostrum alone is not enough to protect them.
That is a different sentence from "IgG has nothing to do with it," and for a veterinarian in Italy it is the one that matters. Anyone raising alpacas checks passive transfer — rightly so, and that is the subject of fact sheet C-02 in this collection. This article says that a normal check of passive transfer does not protect against enterotoxemia, and that therefore clinical surveillance of the cria does not end when the IgG is fine. Read together with fact sheet M-04, the picture closes: if enterotoxemia is a coinfection with Eimeria, and if the environmental oocyst load peaks in the second-third week after birth, then that is the risk window, and IgG does not close it.
Three things are still worth the trip, and they are numbers:
- the IgG of a healthy alpaca cria at 48 hours ranges between 1493 and 4798 mg/dl, with a mean of 3098 — a reference range measured in the species, not extrapolated from the calf;
- it decays, and at 21 days it may already be below the 900 mg/dl threshold;
- the 900 mg/dl at 48 hours threshold is the operational definition of failure in this species, and comes from Garmendia et al., 1987 — a reference this article cites in full and which anyone working on camelids should know.
One last thing, on house method. The number 899.70 mg/dl — the cria that died on the fourteenth day — is thirty hundredths from the threshold. On one side of the threshold there is a case of failure, and the article's conclusion changes. Anyone who has ever written "FPT: yes/no" on a clinical record should keep that number in mind.

23 · Star rating
A · Scientific quality: ★★☆☆☆ This is the lowest score in the issue, and the reason is precise: the study has a comparison group, a statistical analysis, and a well-built reference curve — level-3 elements — but it publishes a conclusion that its own data do not support (§18 point 1), does not justify the sample size in a negative-outcome study, states no limitation, does not report the p value of the main comparison, and contains three internal inconsistencies on age, denominators, and duration of protection. Level 3 requires "largely" coherence with STROBE, and here the gap lies precisely on the items that decide the interpretation. It does not drop to 1 because the denominators are there, the laboratory methods are described, and the funding is declared.
B · Practical usefulness: ★★☆☆☆ It suggests a hypothesis — that alpaca neonatal enterotoxemia is not governed by passive transfer — to be verified, not applied. It changes no practice: no one will stop checking passive transfer because of this article, and no one should. Cross-constraint respected (B ≤ A + 2).
C · Educational value: ★★★★☆ This is the fact sheet with the widest gap between quality and educational value in the whole issue, and it is not a contradiction: it is first-rate teaching material precisely because of how it errs. It teaches four things at once: the physiology of the epitheliochorial placenta and agammaglobulinemia at birth; the IgG reference range in the alpaca cria; the difference between "absence of proof" and "proof of absence"; and how to read a confidence interval running from 0.5 to 57.
D · Transferability to European camelids: ★★☆☆☆ Data on alpacas, but in a very distant context: communal Andean birthing seasons, epizootic outbreaks, field necropsy, cold chain ensured by climate. What really transfers is the IgG curve, which is species physiology and does not depend on context; the numbers on the association with enterotoxemia do not.
24 · Bottom line
What can be concluded: in 17 neonatal alpacas dead with lesions compatible with enterotoxemia in Andean herds, the mean serum IgG concentration was 2361 mg/dl against 2893 mg/dl in 26 healthy crias from the same herds, and only one of the 17 had a value below the 900 mg/dl threshold (899.70 mg/dl at 14 days). That is: almost all the dead crias had received colostrum and had adequate IgG.
What cannot be concluded: that there is no association between failure of passive transfer and death from enterotoxemia. The Odds Ratio of 5.35 has a confidence interval from 0.50 to 57.22 — compatible with anything — and rests, according to the editorial team's reconstruction, on four animals in total. This study did not measure the association: it measured that, with this sample size, the association is not measurable. And it cannot in any way be concluded that colostrum is of little importance: almost all the animals in both groups had received it, and those who do not receive it were not studied here.

SciELO ArticleMeta — articlemeta.scielo.org/api/v1/…
DOAJ — doaj.org/api/search/journals/…
1 · What worked, and what did not
The databases were queried on 31/08/2026, all via API, without WebSearch. Listed in order of actual yield on this task.
| Tool | How it was used | Yield |
|---|---|---|
Crossref, per-journal endpoint — api.crossref.org/journals/<ISSN>/works with cursor pagination | The decisive tool. Instead of querying by keyword, the catalogs of four Latin American journals were downloaded in full and then searched locally: RIVEP 2437 records, Revista MVZ Córdoba 1142, Revista Científica FCV-LUZ 807, Archivos de medicina veterinaria 791. 5177 records in total, of which 712 with «alpaca», «llama», «vicuña», «guanaco» or «camélido» in the title | ★★★★★ |
Crossref, works/<doi> | For the authors' names, ORCIDs, affiliations, licenses and bibliographic details of each fact-sheeted article. Never OpenAlex, for the names | ★★★★★ |
SciELO ArticleMeta — articlemeta.scielo.org/api/v1/… | Resolved DOI → stable SciELO identifier, gave the language of publication (v40) and affiliations (v70), and contradicted Crossref's language field for the Chilean article (M-02 §1). It is a real API, which responds in JSON, whereas the human search interface does not respond | ★★★★☆ |
SciELO Perú — www.scielo.org.pe, sci_arttext pages by PID | Provided four full texts out of five. Responds correctly with a browser user agent | ★★★★☆ |
NLM Catalog — esummary.fcgi?db=nlmcatalog | Gave the indexing status of the two journals (currentindexingstatus: "N"), the cessation date of Arch Med Vet and the abbreviated titles. It is the right tool for proving that a journal is not indexed, instead of inferring it from an empty search | ★★★★☆ |
PubMed esearch with [AID] and Europe PMC query=DOI:"…" | Used to demonstrate an absence, five times each: zero results out of zero, verifiably | ★★★★☆ |
DOAJ — doaj.org/api/search/journals/… | Responded, and the response was total: 0 for both journals, by ISSN and by title alike. An absence recorded with the date, as chapter 14 §7 requires | ★★★☆☆ |
scielo.conicyt.cl (historical mirror of SciELO Chile) and direct PDF scielo.cl/pdf/… | ||
| The two routes that worked for the Argentine article, after the main access had been denied | ★★★☆☆ | |
| Europe PMC, keyword search in Spanish | Queried with alpaca AND LANG:spa (6 results in total, only one veterinary), «camélidos sudamericanos» (17, almost all in English), «Rev Inv Vet Peru» (0). Practically useless for this task, and it is the finding that proves the issue's thesis | ★☆☆☆☆ |
search.scielo.org (SciELO search interface) | HTTP 403. Not usable automatically | ☆☆☆☆☆ |
www.scielo.cl | HTTP 403 on every attempt, including WebFetch | ☆☆☆☆☆ |
RIVEP publisher portal revistasinvestigacion.unmsm.edu.pe | Protected by Anubis v1.27.0, a proof-of-work anti-scraping system requiring JavaScript. This is why three licenses out of five remain unresolved (M-01, M-03, M-05 §8) | ☆☆☆☆☆ |
ISSN portal portal.issn.org | Responded 200 but in HTML, not JSON, despite ?format=json. Not read verifiably, and therefore not cited as a source | ☆☆☆☆☆ |
The operational lesson, in one line
For the Andean literature you do not search by keyword: you download the journal's catalog and search it at home. Peruvian, Chilean, Colombian and Venezuelan journals diligently deposit their DOIs in Crossref — RIVEP has 2437 of them — and Crossref serves a journal's entire catalog in three calls. Free-text search, on indexes that do not contain Spanish, does not find them; the full list cannot fail to find them. This is the reusable technique this issue leaves to the collection.

3 · What this issue did NOT search
This must be stated, because chapter 14 (§2.2) requires that every fact sheet declare the coverage it does not have, and this holds for all five together.
- This is not a systematic review. There is no protocol, no flow diagram, no risk-of-bias assessment of the studies. Five articles were selected from a catalog of 5177 records, with declared criteria (topic not covered by fact sheets A-I, full text reachable, numerical data with denominators) but not reproducible in the PRISMA sense.
- Four journals across one continent. RIVEP, Archivos de medicina veterinaria, Revista MVZ Córdoba, Revista Científica FCV-LUZ. Not queried: Bolivian journals, Argentine ones (InVet, Analecta Veterinaria, RIA), Ecuadorian ones, and gray literature — Peruvian bachelor's and doctoral theses, which appear repeatedly in the bibliographic note of M-01 (Unzueta 2018, Ruiz 2016, Martela 2016, Arias 2020) and which probably contain most of the field data.
- LILACS was not queried, although the mandate named it: the four APIs that worked saturated the available work, and adding a poorly queried database would have been worse than declaring it unqueried. It remains as the first step of the next round.
- Portuguese was not touched. Brazilian literature on camelids is marginal, but the SciELO Brazil collection is the largest in the system and was not looked at.
- None of the works cited within the five articles was verified at the source. Every time a fact sheet reports a third-party figure — the 40 % mange rate in alpacas, the 70 % mortality in the enteric complex, the 9 % failure rate of Garmendia — it reports it as the article reports it, with attribution, and declares it unverified.
- Three licenses out of five remain unresolved (M-01, M-03, M-05), because the publisher's portal cannot be opened automatically. It is the most concrete technical debt this issue leaves behind.
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | RIVEP, ISSN (M-01 §7) | NLM: 1609-9117 elettronico | SciELO: «versión impresa ISSN 1609-9117» | Non deciso: entrambe riportate con la fonte |
| 2 | RIVEP, licenze (M-01, M-03, M-05 §8) | Crossref: CC BY (2021) e CC BY-NC-SA (2018) | SciELO: CC BY-NC in tutti e tre i casi | Si applica la più restrittiva; stato dichiarato irrisolto.
4 · The three metadata divergences, gathered together
So that they do not remain scattered across the fact sheets, and so that anyone reusing these APIs knows them in advance.
| # | Where | What one registration says | What the other says | How it was decided |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | RIVEP, ISSN (M-01 §7) | NLM: 1609-9117 electronic | SciELO: «versión impresa ISSN 1609-9117» | Not decided: both reported with the source |
| 2 | RIVEP, licenses (M-01, M-03, M-05 §8) | Crossref: CC BY (2021) and CC BY-NC-SA (2018) | SciELO: CC BY-NC in all three cases | The more restrictive one applies; status declared unresolved. Three cases out of four diverge, always with Crossref more permissive |
| 3 | Arch Med Vet, language (M-02 §1) | Crossref: language: "en" | SciELO ArticleMeta: v40: "es" — and the text is Spanish | Decided by reading the article. Crossref is wrong, across the journal's entire archive |
And a fourth error, which is not a divergence between databases but within an article: M-02's bibliography prints «2011» for a work that Crossref registers with year 2001 (M-02 §18 point 8).
