Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes
- AQualità scientifica3/5
- BUtilità clinica4/5
- CValore didattico5/5
- DRilevanza per la specie4/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Commento dell'associazione
Riquadro redazionale — CRS/CRL, 31/08/2026.
I 1/3 · C 1/1 · P 2/2 · M 3/3 = 32).
Association commentary
Editorial box — CRS/CRL, 31/08/2026.
Roots touch: in twenty heads of healthy animals the distal root of mandibular 09 was deviated caudally in 13 of 20 cases, and at around thirty months a very thin layer of bone remained between two roots. In twenty heads of healthy animals, the distal root of mandibular 09 was deviated caudally in 13 of 20 cases, that of 08 in 8 of 20; at around thirty months, between the distal root of 09 and the mesial root of 10 a thin layer of bone remained, and at sixty months that bone was gone. Two heads out of twenty had the cementum of the distal root of 09 missing, with the root canal exposed toward the neighboring tooth's root. These are animals with no history of dental disease. It is the anatomical picture of why a periapical infection in a South American camelid does not stay on one tooth alone, and it is the anatomical foundation of the clinical line that card CRL-N-03 reports from live animals: in 13 of 40 cases, three or more cheek teeth of the same arcade were involved.
On the question the reader brings to this card — «how does the camelid tooth differ from the ruminant's?» — the honest answer is that the reference anatomical source does not answer it. Rostami 2014 compares with the equid, on three points: similar tissue density, similar development of the dental sacs, and one difference — in camelids, after eruption the morphology does not change and no enamel overgrowths develop, unlike in the horse. The latter is, incidentally, the anatomical datum supporting the clinical warning against routine molar floating that card CRL-N-04 reports and that CRL-N-01 confirms from the field (none of the 11 oral soft-tissue lesions in 228 alpacas was attributable to enamel overgrowths). That the comparative camelid-ruminant anatomy has not been written is a gap in the literature, and it must be declared as such every time someone assumes it is known.
A method note this card paid to learn. Chapter 21 of the KT attributes to this article a dental formula (
I 1/3 · C 1/1 · P 2/2 · M 3/3 = 32). The full text was read in its entirety and that formula is not there. This is the typical case in which a plausible reconstruction — the article describes elements from which the formula could be deduced — is attributed to the source as if the source had written it. What the article actually says is more interesting and less tidy: mandibular 07 is present in 13 of 20 heads and the maxillary one in 17 of 20, that is, the element count is not constant within the species, and a fixed formula of 32 would be precisely what these data do not allow one to write.A limitation worth keeping in mind every time this work is cited on the alpaca: there were three alpacas. The two species-specific statements — chisel-shaped permanent incisors in the alpaca, spatulate in the llama — are useful and probably true; they are also 3 against 17, all males, and have not been verified by any other study read in this issue.
What CANNOT be concluded from this. Not that South American camelids have 32 teeth. Not that 65% of alpacas have mandibular 07 (65% was thirteen heads, mostly llamas). Not that communications between pulp horns of the same column do not exist — they were not detected, which is a different statement. And not that root deviations cause dental disease: the authors explicitly propose it as a hypothesis to be tested, and to date no one has tested it.

⚠️ Watch how this work is cited. Crossref registers volume: 10, issue: 1 and article-number: 4 (no pages field); Europe PMC registers issue: null and pageInfo: "4"; the PubMed summary record gives BMC Vet Res 10 () 4. The «4» is the article number, not a page: a citation «10:4-4» or «10(1):4» treating it as a page is formally wrong. The correct, verifiable form is 2014;10:4.
Dates: electronic publication date 6 January 2014 (Crossref) and first publication date 2014-01-06 (Europe PMC); Crossref however registers a print publication date of December 2014, which is the date of the annual cumulative print issue. The year is 2014 in both cases, but it is the kind of divergence that, on a different DOI, produces the wrong year.

This card can reproduce: being CC BY, it could also reproduce figures and tables with attribution. 9 · Specie e soggetti
|---|---|---|---|
| Lama (Lama glama) | 17 | 7 femmine, 10 maschi | vedi sotto |
| Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) | 3 | 3 maschi | 9, 61 e 67 mesi |
9 · Species and subjects
⚠️ This is the field that decides how the rest of this card is read.
Twenty heads of South American camelids, and seventeen are llamas.
| number | sex | age | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Llama (Lama glama) | 17 | 7 females, 10 males | see below |
| Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) | 3 | 3 males | 9, 61 and 67 months |
Age of the whole sample: median 34 months (2 years and 10 months), range from 9 months to 9 years (Table 1 of the article lists individual ages in months: 9, 9, 18, 19, 21, 30, 31, 32, 32, 32, 36, 38, 39, 41, 44, 61, 61, 67, 80, 107). ⚠️ Editorial arithmetic check. With twenty values the median is the mean of the tenth (32) and the eleventh (36): 34 months. The full text instead writes «median age … 3 years and 3 months» (39 months), which is neither the median of the list in its own Table 1 nor the mean (807/20 = 40.4 months, about 3 years and 4 months). The article's value does not agree with its table; this card uses the calculation on the individual ages. The range (9 to 107 months, almost 9 years) holds.
Origin and status: heads of healthy animals, slaughtered for meat production or euthanized for reasons unrelated to dental problems; none with a history of disease or abnormality of the head. Each head detached at the atlanto-axial joint, frozen at −20 °C and thawed for three days before examination.
⚠️ What follows from 17 llamas and 3 alpacas. Every sentence in this article that says «SAC» is predominantly llama. The only two explicitly species-specific statements — the shape of the permanent incisors — rest on a comparison between 17 llamas and 3 male alpacas. This is not a defect of the article, which declares the composition in a table: it is the reason why no figure in this card should be presented as «alpaca data» without stating how many alpacas there were.
⚠️ «Healthy» here means «without history». Dental health status was not ascertained with an oral examination before collection: it is inferred from the absence of clinical history. This is relevant, because the article then describes deviations and partial root destruction in animals defined as normal.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
The design does not allow a full PICO: there is no intervention and no clinical outcome. The article's question, in its form:
- P — clinically healthy South American camelid heads, of different ages.
- I — 16-slice CT and digital radiology with a standardized protocol, five views.
- C — the two modalities against each other, to establish which radiographic views best render what CT shows without superimpositions.
- O — description of normal dental anatomy by age group; radiodensity (Hounsfield units) of dental tissues; recommended radiographic protocol.
As a question: what does a normal South American camelid tooth look like, and at what angle is it photographed?
11 · Disegno dello studio
For all measurements, the mean and standard deviations were calculated.»
11 · Study design
Anatomical-descriptive cadaver study (20 heads), with an internal comparison between two imaging modalities. It is not a clinical study, it is not a diagnostic accuracy study (there is no disease to detect nor a reference standard), it has no inferential statistics: «For all measurements, the mean and standard deviations were calculated.»
12 · Level of evidence
Anatomical-descriptive evidence on cadaveric material, without a comparison group and without statistical inference.
Consequence for the reader: this work establishes what exists — a common pulp chamber in young teeth, deviated roots, root contacts — and at what frequency in twenty heads. It establishes nothing about populations, risk, or prognosis, and its «65%» figures are descriptive proportions in a sample of 20, not prevalence estimates. Anyone reading «mandibular 07 is present in 65% of camelids» is turning 13 of 20 heads into a population the article never sampled.
13 · Relevant reporting standard
⚠️ No grid from the closed list in chapter 14 §3 covers this design. ARRIVE 2.0 concerns in vivo research (there is no live animal here); STROBE concerns observational studies on populations (there is no population here); CARE concerns case reports. The closest in spirit is ARRIVE 2.0, whose items on sample size, inclusion criteria, description of subjects and raw data remain applicable — and it is against those that field 21 measures this article, declaring the use of a tool outside its domain.
This is the same structural gap already recorded in CRL-I-01 for diagnostic accuracy studies: it is corrected in the chapter 14 grid for all cards, not here. The authors declare no grid.

Presenza dei denti.
| Reperto | Frequenza |

| 07 mandibolare presente | 13/20 (65 %) |
| 07 mascellare presente | 17/20 (85 %) |

Radici: deviazioni, contatti e distruzione — in animali definiti sani.
| Reperto | Frequenza |
|---|---|
| Radice distale del 09 mandibolare deviata in direzione caudale | 13/20 (65 %) |
| Radice distale dell'08 mandibolare deviata in direzione caudale | 8/20 (40 %) |

Numbers and anatomical descriptions only, from the full text. Denominator 20 heads (17 llamas + 3 alpacas) unless otherwise stated.
Presence of teeth.
| Finding | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Mandibular 07 present | 13/20 (65%) |
| Maxillary 07 present | 17/20 (85%) |
| Maxillary cheek teeth per arcade | five (2 premolars + 3 molars) |
| Mandibular cheek teeth per hemiarcade | two premolars + three molars |
| Maxillary incisor and canine | one each per side (03 and 04) |
⛔ What this article does NOT say, and is attributed to it. The full text was read in its entirety: it contains no dental formula, neither in I·C·P·M form nor as a total count of elements. It describes how many cheek teeth there are per arcade and which incisors and canines, and that is all. A dental formula attributed to this work is a formula reconstructed by whoever cites it, not a datum from Rostami 2014.
Roots: deviations, contacts and destruction — in animals defined as healthy.
| Finding | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Distal root of mandibular 09 deviated caudally | 13/20 (65%) |
| Distal root of mandibular 08 deviated caudally | 8/20 (40%) |
| Distal root of mandibular 10 deviated | 3/20 (15%) |
| Contact between the disto-buccal root of maxillary 09 and mesio-buccal of 10 | 7/20 (35%) |
| Cementum of the distal root of 09 absent, with root canal exposed toward the adjacent root | 2/20 (10%) |
The deviation increases with age: in a 9-month-old alpaca it was present only on the distal root of deciduous 08; at around 30 months between the two adjacent roots there remained «a thin layer of bone tissue»; at 60 months, with all teeth present, «the distal root of 09 appeared to push the mesial root of 10 in a caudal direction» and no alveolar bone was detectable between the two roots any longer. With age, sclerosis of the alveolar bone was also observed, obscuring the lamina dura and periodontal membrane.
Pulp and infundibula.
- Each molar column contains two pulp horns, except the distal column of mandibular 11, which has only one.
- All molars have 4 pulp horns; mandibular 11 has 5.
- The common pulp chamber was clearly visible in the young teeth of South American camelids; with aging, secondary dentin reduces the pulp cavity and closes the common chamber. ⚠️ The precise moment of closure cannot be determined from these results, and the authors state so: the datum does not exist → to be checked against the full text of another study (see field 26).
- ⚠️ Communications between the pulp horns of the same column were not detected with the CT technique used. «Not detected with this technique» is not «absent»: the distinction is the article's and must be kept.
- Two infundibula per molar, except the distal column of mandibular 11 which has none; the mandibular premolars have no infundibulum; maxillary 07 has none; maxillary 08 has one. Infundibula sickle-shaped in section, filled with cementum, with the convexity buccal in mandibular teeth and palatal in maxillary teeth.
- No sign of infundibular lesion; with age, occlusal exposure of the infundibulum and filling with food debris was observed.
Roots, columns and shape, tooth by tooth.
- Mandibular 07: the smallest in the arcade, a conical column, two closely spaced roots; deciduous and permanent of the same shape, the permanent one larger.
- Deciduous mandibular 08: three columns and two divergent roots, with the two mesial columns sharing a root. Permanent 08: two columns, two roots, triangular shape.
- Mandibular 09 and 10: two separate columns joined at crown level, each with a single root of its own; the 10s larger than the 09s.
- Mandibular 11: three columns, each with its own single root, roots proportionally shorter relative to the crown; the third, distal, column is smaller, oval in section, without infundibulum and with a single pulp horn.
- Maxillary 07: conical, a single pulp horn, no infundibulum, root dividing into three short horns.
- Maxillary 08: one column, one infundibulum, one or two palatal roots and two buccal ones; the roots lie ventral to the infraorbital foramen.
- Maxillary molars: two columns, four roots (one palatal and one buccal per column, superimposed on radiography), two infundibula; the 10s are the largest teeth in the arcade.
Incisors and canines — the only measured species differences.
- Permanent alpaca incisors: rectangular in section and chisel-shaped.
- Permanent llama incisors: spatulate, with tapering roots.
- Deciduous incisors of both species: spatulate.
- Mandibular canine, in both species: curved, round in section, entirely covered in enamel both on the erupted crown and on the intra-alveolar one, pointed at both ends, anchored by a curved root.
- Maxillary incisor (03) and canine (04): curved, pointed at both ends, round section, crown completely covered in enamel.
- The third incisor (03) of each hemimandible is subjectively narrower than the first (01).
⚠️ This is, anatomically, the portrait of the fighting teeth — the three pairs that card CRL-N-04 covers from the clinical side. The article does not call them that and does not discuss their management: it describes them. The fact that they are entirely covered in enamel and pointed at both ends is the anatomical datum underlying every discussion of how they are shortened.
Radiodensity (Hounsfield units, means). Permanent teeth: enamel from 2,162 to 2,739 HU (minimum on mandibular 07, maximum on mandibular 09); dentin from 953 to 1,566 HU; cementum from 968 to 1,547 HU; pulp from −26.7 to 866 HU. Deciduous teeth: enamel from 2,338 to 2,504 HU; dentin from 1,250 to 1,373; cementum from 1,222 to 1,452; pulp from 84.7 to 891.3 HU. ⚠️ The value of 866 HU for the pulp of the permanent mandibular 07 and that of 891.3 HU for the deciduous mandibular 07 are the highest of the pulp values in the same tables, not «two orders of magnitude» higher (Tables 4 and 5 of the article): among permanent teeth 866 is 1.3 times the next one (657, maxillary 07); among deciduous teeth 891.3 is about 8 times the next one (107.0). Pulp is soft tissue and these two figures, like 657 and 463.2, have the density of a mineralized tissue. The article does not comment on them. They are plausibly measurements taken on a conical tooth with a tiny pulp cavity, where the measurement volume includes hard tissue, but the article does not say so → to be checked against the full text: this card reports the values as printed and flags the anomaly without explaining it.
È dichiarato come ipotesi, e la conclusione dell'articolo la ripete al condizionale: «Future investigations are warranted to test the hypothesis that tooth root deformities, concurrent alveolar sclerosis and interdental tooth root contact might represent predisposing factors for dental disease in SAC.»
16 · Authors' interpretation
Explicitly attributed, from the full text, and kept separate from field 15.
On the origin of dental disease. The authors recall that other authors have hypothesized that early removal of deciduous «caps» is a possible etiology of dental problems, and propose an alternative explanation: since dental problems of South American camelids concentrate on the mandibular molars between 4 and 8 years, «another possible explanation could be that the roots of the mandibular cheek teeth were deviated, deformed or shortened and partially destroyed with different degrees of pulp exposure», and that this would explain why disease onset occurs over such a wide age range. It is stated as a hypothesis, and the article's conclusion repeats it conditionally: «Future investigations are warranted to test the hypothesis that tooth root deformities, concurrent alveolar sclerosis and interdental tooth root contact might represent predisposing factors for dental disease in SAC.»
On the common pulp chamber. The authors confront head-on a claim from the earlier literature — that the pulp horns of the mesial and distal roots do not communicate — and write that «this statement requires a detailed explanation»: the common chamber certainly exists in the younger teeth, and closes with secondary dentin at a time their results do not allow them to determine. They conclude that «this could be an indicator for surgical intervention».
On the radiographic protocol. They recommend the 30° obliques (L30°Do-LVeO for the maxilla, L30°V-LDoO for the mandible) as those with minimal distortion of the reserve crown and roots and minimal superimposition of the arcades, and note that this differs from the earlier recommendation of Niehaus, who used 45°; they attribute the difference also to their having used the unit's goniometer, «which seems more reliable».
On the comparison between species — and here the reading must be careful. This article's axis of comparison is the equid, not the ruminant: the Hounsfield units of the dental tissues of South American camelids are described as similar to those of horses; the developing dental sacs are described as consistent with what is known in the horse; and the stated difference with respect to the horse is that in camelids, after complete eruption, tooth morphology did not change with age and no enamel overgrowths developed.
⛔ A declared gap, which must be stated explicitly because it is what the reader is looking for. This article contains no comparison with ruminants. It does not compare the formula, does not compare the morphology, does not compare the mechanics. Anyone looking for «how does the camelid tooth differ from the ruminant's» will not find the answer here, and this card does not fabricate it. What the article does establish, and what actually distinguishes South American camelids from domestic ruminants — well-developed upper and lower canines fully covered in enamel, one maxillary incisor and one canine per side, an inconstant 07 — is anatomical material from which the comparison could be built, but the building would be ours, not the article's, and in this collection what is ours belongs in field 22 and is called commentary.

Citati, non riassunti.
- Numerosità e distribuzione delle età: «considering the rather small sample size and the lack of animals at specific age categories (median age of the animals was 3 years and 3 months ranging from 9 months to 9 years), caution must be applied, as the findings might not be fully representative for the entire population of SAC» (la mediana delle età elencate nella tabella 1 è 34 mesi, non 3 anni e 3 mesi: vedi il campo 9).

- Sample size and age distribution: «considering the rather small sample size and the lack of animals at specific age categories (median age of the animals was 3 years and 3 months ranging from 9 months to 9 years), caution must be applied, as the findings might not be fully representative for the entire population of SAC» (the median of the ages listed in Table 1 is 34 months, not 3 years and 3 months: see field 9).
- The moment of closure of the common pulp chamber «cannot be determined from our results and requires further investigation».
- Interpulpal communications «were not detected with our CT examination technique» — a formulation the authors choose in place of «do not exist».
- The images come from specimens: the authors clarify that the protocol figure shows the technique recommended for the live animal, derived from the results on cadavers, not the technique performed on the live animal.
- Nessuna statistica oltre media e deviazione standard.
18 · Limits added by the editors
- ⚠️ Seventeen llamas and three alpacas, and the three alpacas are all males, aged 9, 61 and 67 months. Any species-specific statement about the alpaca in this article rests on three animals.
- Heads frozen at −20 °C and thawed for three days. The freeze-thaw cycle is not discussed as a possible factor on soft-tissue density and pulp appearance. With pulp radiodensity measurements at stake (field 15), this is not irrelevant.
- No histology, no reference standard. The deviations, the partial root destruction and the absence of cementum are described as seen on CT, without confirmation on section.
- No inter-observer agreement and no blinding declared: it is not stated who read the images nor whether they were read once or more than once (field 14).
- No statistics beyond mean and standard deviation. The proportions («65%», «40%») are reported without confidence intervals; at n = 20 a 95% CI around 65% would run roughly from 41% to 85% — an editorial calculation, to give a sense of the scale of uncertainty, not a result of the article.
- Radiodensity is measured at 2-3 points per tissue, averaged, without dispersion reported per point nor the number of teeth measured for each cell of Tables 4 and 5.
- The pulp anomalies at 866 and 891 HU remain unexplained (field 15).
- No age bracket between 9 and 12 years: the oldest animal is 107 months (8 years and 11 months), and camelids live beyond that. The anatomy of the geriatric tooth — the one the clinical field encounters when the molar is worn down to the gum — is not in this article.

21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard
Measured with ARRIVE 2.0, declaring it a tool outside its domain (field 13):
- ⛔ No justification of sample size (ARRIVE Essential 10, item 2): why twenty heads, and why that distribution of age and species?
- ⛔ Inclusion and exclusion criteria not defined: «healthy» means «no history of head disease», which is an anamnestic criterion, not an examination criterion.
- ⛔ No raw data published (ARRIVE item 10 in the extended version): the radiodensities are means, the measurement points are not provided, and no supplementary material exists.
- ⛔ No statement on who evaluated the images, nor blinding (ARRIVE item 5).
- ⛔ No statement of adherence to a reporting grid, and no registered protocol.
- ⛔ No measure of variability on the proportions reported as percentages.
- ✅ Not missing, and it should be said: the complete table of the twenty subjects with species, sex and individual age — which is exactly what allows this card to write «17 llamas and 3 alpacas» instead of «20 South American camelids», and without which the article would be unusable for this issue. Equipment and exposure parameters are also declared, complete, in a final note.
23 · Valutazione a stelle
| Asse | Voto | Motivazione in una riga |
|---|---|---|
23 · Star rating
| Axis | Rating | One-line rationale |
|---|---|---|
| A — Scientific quality | ★★★☆☆ | Imaging protocol described exemplarily and complete subject table, but twenty cadavers, no histology, no blinding, no measure of uncertainty and two unexplained anomalous pulp radiodensity values. |
| B — Clinical usefulness | ★★★★☆ | Gives the radiographic angles to use and the anatomical reason why infection jumps to the neighboring tooth; gives nothing on diagnosis, therapy or prognosis. |
| C — Educational value | ★★★★★ | It is the atlas: columns, pulp horns, infundibula, roots, tooth by tooth, with the image alongside — the text from which the species' dental anatomy is taught. |
| D — Species relevance | ★★★★☆ | Entirely South American camelids, but predominantly llama: loses one star because the alpaca portion is three males and the card cannot say more. |
24 · Bottom line
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that in twenty heads of clinically healthy South American camelids (17 llamas, 3 alpacas, from 9 months to 9 years) there exists a common pulp chamber in young teeth that closes with secondary dentin at an undetermined time, that the roots of the mandibular cheek teeth deviate and come into contact with age (09 in 13/20, 08 in 8/20, with loss of the interposed bone by five years), that 07 is inconstant (mandibular 13/20, maxillary 17/20), and that the 30° obliques are the radiographic views with minimal distortion and superimposition.
It cannot be concluded a dental formula for the species — which the article does not write and which its own data on 07 make problematic; nor anything about the comparison with ruminants, which the article does not make; nor a population prevalence, because twenty heads collected at the slaughterhouse are not a sample; nor that root deformities predispose to dental disease, which the authors explicitly propose as a hypothesis to be tested.
