Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes
- AQualità scientifica1/5
- BUtilità clinica5/5
- CValore didattico5/5
- DRilevanza per la specie3/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Association commentary
Editorial box — CRS/CRL, 31/08/2026.
No number, no animal counted, no comparison: and yet, to know what a fighting tooth is shortened with and how much of it is left, this article is the available literature. No number, no animal counted, no comparison: and yet, for «what a fighting tooth is shortened with, how much of it is left, and what is not used», this article is the literature. The queries made for this issue found no comparative study of shortening techniques, of optimal residual length, of toenail trimming frequency, nor any measurement of camelid toenail growth rate. Anyone writing outreach material on these topics is citing 2009 expert consensus, and has a duty to say so.
The three prohibitions matter more than the recommendations, and must be held together because they share the same shape. Side cutters on fighting teeth → fracture. Forced extraction of the mandibular canine → mental nerve, third incisor, mandibular fracture. Routine molar floating → molars worn to the gumline, weight loss, death. These are three different ways of saying the same thing: the camelid tooth tolerates neither force nor removal of substance, and each of the three mistakes is the mechanical transfer of a correct practice from another species — side cutters from the small ruminant, elevation and floating from the horse. Record CRL-N-02 gives the anatomy that explains it (enamel over the entire crown of the canine, curved and contiguous roots, no physiological enamel overgrowth); record CRL-N-03 documents, in one case out of forty, what happens when an elevation goes wrong: unintentional removal of part of the third molar and an orocutaneous fistula with loss of food and saliva. The 2009 warning and the 2025 case are the same sentence, written sixteen years apart.
On the foot, the line worth taking away is the one almost nobody cites. Not «two to three times a year»: that is the part that gets remembered. The part that matters is why some animals get there — «lack of normal wear», due to soft ground or corkscrew conformation. That is: trimming frequency is not a property of the species, it is a property of the individual animal on its substrate. A practical consequence follows that the article does not write and that we state as our own: a fixed trimming calendar is the wrong answer to an individual question; the answer is the periodic examination the article recommends and that almost nobody reports when quoting the line about two-to-three trims.
⚠️ A warning about how this article is cited, which concerns us too. Europe PMC marks it as open access and anyone can read it for free today. It is not open access: it is an article with all rights reserved, deposited in PMC under an Elsevier grant tied to the COVID-19 resource centre and revocable with it (field 8). Anyone reproducing one of its figures in outreach material — the photo of the trimmed foot, which is exactly the figure everyone would want — would commit an infringement, and the fact that the PDF downloads without a subscription would not be a defense. The license is read on the record, it is not inferred from the fact that the file opens.
What CANNOT be concluded from this. That inferior prognathism is common in alpaca: the only existing measurement says between 0.9% and 3.5% across 228 animals, and the two terminologies cannot be aligned without conjecture. That 2-4 mm is the correct residual length: no one has measured it. That two-three trims a year is the correct interval: the article says so for some animals and for one reason, not for the species. And that the shearing table is a low-stress restraint: it is stated in a caption, it has not been measured, and none of the five sources read for this issue measures the animal's stress on the shearing table.

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 2009, volume 25, fascicolo 2, pagine 239-263.

7 · Journal status
Verified on 31/08/2026. Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice: ISSN 0749-0720 (print) and 1558-4240 (electronic); NLM ID 8511905; publisher Elsevier. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: no — this journal's DOAJ record → 0 results. OpenAlex: 2,337 indexed works, not open access, not in the DOAJ directory. Europe PMC classifies the publication type as review article as well as journal article; PubMed indexes it only as journal article. It is a series of invited reviews, not original work: serious, authoritative in its field, and structurally not peer-reviewed on a par with a primary journal.
8 · Licenza dell'articolo
Il regime è: «Copyright © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.» — tutti i diritti riservati.
«Since January 2020 Elsevier has created a COVID-19 resource centre with free information in English and Mandarin on the novel coronavirus COVID-19. […] Elsevier hereby grants permission to make all its COVID-19-related research that is available on the COVID-19 resource centre — including this research content — immediately available in PubMed Central and other publicly funded repositories […]. These permissions are granted for free by Elsevier for as long as the COVID-19 resource centre remains active.»
8 · Article license
⚠️ This is the bibliographically most important field of this record, and the easiest to get wrong.
The regime is: «Copyright © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.» — all rights reserved. Crossref records seven license entries for this DOI and none is open: two are licenses for text and data mining (elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/ and elsevier.com/legal/tdmrep-license) and five are STM-ASF policies (doi.org/10.15223/policy-004, -012, -017, -029, -037).
Why then does Europe PMC say open access? Because the deposit in PubMed Central exists by virtue of a temporary and revocable grant, whose text is in the front matter of the deposit itself and is reproduced here because it is the evidence:
«Since January 2020 Elsevier has created a COVID-19 resource centre with free information in English and Mandarin on the novel coronavirus COVID-19. […] Elsevier hereby grants permission to make all its COVID-19-related research that is available on the COVID-19 resource centre — including this research content — immediately available in PubMed Central and other publicly funded repositories […]. These permissions are granted for free by Elsevier for as long as the COVID-19 resource centre remains active.»
In plain terms: the article is readable for free today, it is not freely licensed, and the permission may cease. A 2009 chapter on camelid herd health ended up in Elsevier's COVID deposit by an editorial scope decision, not because it is open access.
This record may reproduce: only factual data and short quoted citations for purposes of summary and comment — which is exactly what it does in fields 15 and 16, where every recommendation is rendered in the authors' wording in quotation marks because the value of this article lies in the words chosen. ⛔ No figure reproduced. The five figures — the alpaca on the shearing table, the foot trimmed flush, the llama with deviated toenails, normal incisor conformation, the alpaca with overgrown incisors mid-trim — remain to be viewed in the article, and are the part a record cannot replace. ⛔ And this is why this record twice says «see the figure in the article» instead of describing it: a detailed description of a protected figure is itself a derivative work.
9 · Specie e soggetti
⚠️ Nessuna numerosità. Nessun soggetto. Nessun denominatore. In tutto l'articolo.
9 · Species and subjects
⚠️ No sample size. No subjects. No denominator. Anywhere in the article.
The article discusses camelids in general, with examples of llama and alpaca; the figures show an alpaca on the shearing table, a trimmed camelid foot, a llama with toenail deviation, and an alpaca with overgrown incisors. There is no study population, no animals counted, no observation period.
The only sample sizes appearing in the text belong to other studies the article cites — for example two papers on shearing and body temperature in alpaca — and this record does not report them, because they belong to other articles that have not been read.
What follows. Every statement in fields 15 and 16 is expert consensus, and should be read as such: not «43% of alpaca», but «the authors recommend». Where a frequency word appears in the text — «occurs commonly», «it is common» — that word has no number behind it, and field 18 shows what happens when it is compared with the only existing measurement.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
The design does not allow for a PICO, and saying so is part of this record: there is no defined population, no comparison, no measured outcome.
The article's question, in its own form: which routine management and biosecurity interventions should be included in a herd health plan for a camelid operation? Of that overall plan, this record covers only the dental and podiatric part (the Routine husbandry section): the part on vaccinations, parasites, quarantine and biosecurity is the subject of other KT chapters and is not recorded here.
11 · Disegno dello studio
11 · Study design
Expert narrative review (invited clinical series chapter), from the closed list of chapter 14 §1.3 and §4.
It is not a systematic review and does not claim to be one: it declares no databases searched, no search strings, no inclusion criteria, no flow diagram, and no risk-of-bias assessment of the cited sources. Per chapter 14 §4.1 this is not a defect if declared: it is a different genre, with its own usefulness.
12 · Level of evidence
Published expert consensus (narrative review), the lowest level of the chapter 14 §1.1 hierarchy.
Consequence for the reader, and in this field the consequence is particular: for part of this subject matter — how fighting teeth are shortened, with what, how much is left, what is not used; how a toenail is trimmed and how often — this expert consensus is all that exists. It is not «weak evidence to be viewed with suspicion» (chapter 14 §1.3): it is the only thing written. Anyone looking for a comparative study of bur versus obstetric wire, or on the optimal residual crown length, will not find it, because it has not been done. The record states this and does not mask it behind a tone more confident than the source allows.
13 · Standard di reporting pertinente
SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles), come previsto dal capitolo 14 §4.2 per le revisioni narrative.
13 · Relevant reporting standard
SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles), as required by chapter 14 §4.2 for narrative reviews. Neither PRISMA (it is not systematic) nor STROBE (it is not observational) applies. The authors declare no checklist — consistent with the date and the genre.
14 · Metodo
14 · Method
Not declared, because the genre does not call for one. The article does not describe how the recommendations were selected or on which sources they are based, apart from the text's specific bibliographic references. The section recorded here (Routine husbandry) contains only one bibliographic reference in the dental part — note 14, attached to the warning against forced extraction of canines — and no reference in the podiatric part.
⚠️ That the recommendation on 2-4 mm of residual crown and the one on trimming 2-3 times a year carry no reference is a finding of this record: these are statements untraceable to a primary source → to be checked against the full text, where «full text» here means a primary source that the article does not indicate and that, as far as emerged from the queries made for this issue, may not exist.
15 · Risultati (dati)
«The single most effective time for husbandry intervention is in the spring, when shearing should occur in all camelid herds. This provides a time of temporary handling and restraint, when animals can be observed closely and most care, including vaccinations, can be provided for the year.»
E, nella didascalia della prima figura, la contenzione: il tavolo da tosatura rialzato «provides safe, low-stress restraint for most routine husbandry procedures». Al momento della tosatura vanno esaminati e pareggiati piedi e denti: «At the time of shearing, the feet and teeth should be examined and trimmed as needed.»
«Camelids have a toenail around a soft footpad, rather than a hoof, and this toenail should be trimmed flush with the soft pad using small shear-type foot-trimming instruments.»
La didascalia della figura 2 lo ripete come criterio verificabile: «The "V"-shaped nail has been trimmed flush with the weight-bearing surface of the foot.»
«After this yearly trim, owners should examine feet periodically, as some animals, particularly those on soft ground or with a corkscrew nail conformation, may need to be trimmed two to three times per year.»
«The lower incisors grow continuously and inferior prognathism, or underbite, occurs commonly in camelids. The lower incisors should just meet the rostral end of the superior dental pad»
e si pareggiano a quella lunghezza «using a diamond dremel-type bit and tool, or powered incisor trimmers designed for camelids, or obstetric wire».
«the three pairs of fighting teeth, or upper fourth incisor and upper and lower canine teeth»
Tre paia: il quarto incisivo superiore e i canini superiori e inferiori.
Quando:
«These erupt around 2 to 2.5 years of age in most animals»
Perché e in chi:
«should be trimmed, particularly in males, to prevent camelids from injuring human beings and other animals»
«These may be trimmed using diamond Dremel bits or obstetric wire, removing the sharp point and leaving 2 mm to 4 mm of the crown above the gumline to prevent tooth abscessation.»
⛔ «Side cutters or other manual cutting tools are strongly discouraged because of the high risk of tooth fracture.»
⛔ «Forced extraction of these teeth is also discouraged, particularly of the mandibular canine, because of its proximity to the mental nerve and third incisor and risk of mandibular fracture.»
«In geriatric animals, the molars should be examined for abnormal wear and the development of points or wavemouth. If noticed, this wear should be recorded along with the animal's body condition score (BCS), and a physical examination and feeding history obtained.»
⛔ «Molar teeth should not be floated in camelids as in horses unless abnormal wear is seen, accompanied by weight loss, and a history of dropping feed or dysphagia. It is common for geriatric camelids to experience wear of molars down to the gumline, frequently resulting in severe weight loss and death. Routine or over-aggressive floating of molars contributes to the development of this condition.»
15 · Results (data)
There are no numerical results: there are recommendations. They are reported here in the authors' own wording, because it is the wording that matters.
The operational window — when all this is done.
«The single most effective time for husbandry intervention is in the spring, when shearing should occur in all camelid herds. This provides a time of temporary handling and restraint, when animals can be observed closely and most care, including vaccinations, can be provided for the year.»
And, in the caption of the first figure, restraint: the raised shearing table «provides safe, low-stress restraint for most routine husbandry procedures». At the time of shearing, feet and teeth should be examined and trimmed: «At the time of shearing, the feet and teeth should be examined and trimmed as needed.»
⚠️ This is the only indication of restraint present in this article, and it is physical, not chemical. No drug, no dose, no route appears in the entire section recorded here. Anyone looking for sedation for the oral exam finds it in record CRL-N-01; anyone looking for general chemical restraint of the camelid finds it in the Abrahamsen chapter of the same issue (field 26).
The foot — functional anatomy, technique, frequency, and the role of the substrate.
«Camelids have a toenail around a soft footpad, rather than a hoof, and this toenail should be trimmed flush with the soft pad using small shear-type foot-trimming instruments.»
That is: a toenail around a soft footpad, not a hoof; it is trimmed flush with the weight- bearing surface of the pad, with small shear-type trimming instruments. The caption of figure 2 repeats it as a verifiable criterion: «The "V"-shaped nail has been trimmed flush with the weight-bearing surface of the foot.»
On frequency, the exact wording — and it must be read carefully because it contains two recommendations, not one:
«After this yearly trim, owners should examine feet periodically, as some animals, particularly those on soft ground or with a corkscrew nail conformation, may need to be trimmed two to three times per year.»
That is: one yearly trim at shearing for all, plus periodic examination, and two to three times a year for some animals. And the two factors that identify those animals are stated: soft ground and corkscrew nail conformation. The caption of figure 3 adds the mechanism: a llama with toenail deviation «generally requires more frequent trimming because of lack of normal wear» — lack of normal wear.
⚠️ This is the only substrate-foot link present in a source of this issue, and it is a consensus statement, not a measurement. No number, no comparison between grounds, no definition of «soft ground». Record CRL-N-05 takes up the question from the data side and shows that the data does not exist.
The incisors.
«The lower incisors grow continuously and inferior prognathism, or underbite, occurs commonly in camelids. The lower incisors should just meet the rostral end of the superior dental pad»
and are trimmed to that length «using a diamond dremel-type bit and tool, or powered incisor trimmers designed for camelids, or obstetric wire». The caption of figure 5 adds a safety detail: the use of an oral speculum prevents injury to the dental pad during trimming.
⚠️ The word «commonly» has no number behind it — see field 18, point 1.
The fighting teeth — the part for which this article is the reference source.
What they are, and how many:
«the three pairs of fighting teeth, or upper fourth incisor and upper and lower canine teeth»
Three pairs: the upper fourth incisor and the upper and lower canines.
When:
«These erupt around 2 to 2.5 years of age in most animals»
They erupt around 2-2.5 years of age in most animals.
Why and in whom:
«should be trimmed, particularly in males, to prevent camelids from injuring human beings and other animals»
They should be shortened, particularly in males, to prevent injury to people and other animals.
How, and how much is left:
«These may be trimmed using diamond Dremel bits or obstetric wire, removing the sharp point and leaving 2 mm to 4 mm of the crown above the gumline to prevent tooth abscessation.»
Diamond Dremel-type bur or obstetric wire; the sharp point is removed leaving 2-4 mm of crown above the gumline, and the stated reason is to prevent tooth abscessation.
What is NOT done — the first prohibition:
⛔ «Side cutters or other manual cutting tools are strongly discouraged because of the high risk of tooth fracture.»
Side cutters and other manual cutting tools: strongly discouraged, because of the high risk of tooth fracture.
What is NOT done — the second prohibition, and the complication that motivates it:
⛔ «Forced extraction of these teeth is also discouraged, particularly of the mandibular canine, because of its proximity to the mental nerve and third incisor and risk of mandibular fracture.»
Forced extraction discouraged, particularly of the mandibular canine, because of proximity to the mental nerve and the third incisor and because of risk of mandibular fracture. It is the only statement in the section carrying a bibliographic reference (note 14).
The molars of the geriatric subject — the third prohibition, and it is the one that kills.
Routine, or over-aggressive, molar floating contributes to producing molar wear down to the gumline, which «frequently results in severe weight loss and death». The three conditions that together justify the intervention are stated: visible abnormal wear + weight loss + history of dropped feed or dysphagia.
Recording. Among the management data to be kept on file, the authors explicitly include «shearing, toenails, and fighting teeth-trimming dates»: the dates of shearing, toenail trimming, and fighting teeth shortening.
16 · Authors' interpretation
In a narrative review the boundary between data and interpretation is particularly thin, and it must be drawn anyway: all of field 15 is, technically, the authors' interpretation. What follows is what the authors state as general framing, and explains where those recommendations come from.
The article opens by stating that herd health is particularly important in camelids «because of the high frequency of movement for shows, breeding, and boarding», and that veterinary input into program design «is critical and requires an active veterinarian-client- patient relationship with identification of the operation's goals». Risk assessments, they write, «should be made based on the operation's activities and should be the foundation of herd health program design».
⚠️ Note what the authors do not state. They do not state that trimming two to three times a year is the best interval: they say some animals need it, and they say which. They do not state that fighting teeth should be shortened in all: they say «particularly in males». They do not state that floating is always wrong: they set three conditions for it to be justified. Whenever one of these recommendations is quoted in absolute form, the quotation is more categorical than the source.
17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori
⚠️ Nessuno.
17 · Limitations stated by the authors
⚠️ None. The full text was read: the article contains no limitations section, nor a discussion of the strength of its own recommendations, nor any statement on the level of evidence supporting them. This record does not write that the authors were unaware of this: it writes that it is not in the text, as is customary for a 2009 treatise chapter.
18 · Limitations added by the editors
- ⚠️ «Occurs commonly» versus «2 of 228», and it is the most useful observation of this record. The article states that inferior prognathism (underbite) «occurs commonly in camelids». The only existing population measurement — 228 alpaca, record CRL-N-01 — reports mandibular underbite in 2 of 228 animals (0.9%) and mandibular overbite in 8 of 228 (3.5%). (Table 2 of the CRL-N-01 article prints 0.8% for underbite: 2/228 = 0.877, which rounds to 0.9%, as in CRL-N-01 for the canines with 2/228.) ⚠️ This record, however, does not claim the two data points contradict each other, because the terminology is not aligned. «Inferior prognathism, or underbite» in Jones and Boileau describes the mandible protruding beyond the dental pad; Proost and colleagues use «mandibular overbite» for the condition their figure 2F illustrates as severe overgrowth of mandibular incisors 301 and 401, i.e., plausibly, the same condition. The two nomenclatures are not defined against one another in either source, and this record does not equate them by conjecture → to be checked against the full text. What can be said without conjecture is: in 228 Belgian and Dutch alpaca, incisor malocclusions however named were between 0.9% and 3.5%, and no validated malocclusion classification exists for South American camelids that would allow the two sources to be aligned.
- No bibliographic reference supports the two most cited operational numbers (2-4 mm of residual crown; 2-3 trims per year) nor the eruption age of the fighting teeth (field 14).
- «Soft ground» is not defined. Neither type, nor moisture, nor duration of exposure. The recommendation is clinically sensible and operationally unverifiable: two owners may classify the same paddock in opposite ways.
- No complication of trimming is discussed. It is not stated what happens if too much is cut, bleeding of the lamina is not mentioned, there is no criterion for when to stop other than «flush with the pad».
- No alternative to the prohibitions. If forced canine extraction is discouraged, what is done for a fractured or infected canine? The article does not say. The modern answer is in record CRL-N-03, sixteen years later.
- The context is North American (Kansas and Oklahoma, 2009): shearing calendar, reference dates, and farm organization are written for that context, and the dates («before May 1 in the south, June 1 in the north») do not transfer to Europe.
- Sixteen years. The article is from 2009. Since then the prevalence study on 228 alpaca (2020), the two micro-CT anatomies (2021-2022), and the oral surgical case series (2025) have been published: none of these contradicts the management recommendations reported here, but all four change the context in which they are to be read. A treatise chapter does not update itself.
19 · Finanziamento
19 · Funding
⚠️ Not declared. The PMC deposit, read in full, contains no funding section. Europe PMC reports an empty funding list. As in records CRL-N-01 and CRL-N-02: this record does not state that there was no funding, it states that the source does not declare it — moreover, for an invited treatise chapter, the question itself is ill-posed.
20 · Conflicts of interest
⚠️ Not declared. No conflicts-of-interest section appears in the text. In 2009 this was not established practice for Veterinary Clinics of North America chapters; today it is. The field is not left blank: the declaration is missing, and the reader has no way of knowing whether the authors had relationships with manufacturers of the instruments named in the text (Dremel bur, shears, trimming instruments, incisor trimmers «designed for camelids»).
21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard
Measured against SANRA (six items, chapter 14 §4.2):
- ⛔ No statement of the literature search strategy (SANRA 4): it is not known which sources were consulted or how.
- ⛔ No reference to evidence for key statements (SANRA 5): the two numerical recommendations of the podiatric and dental section carry no citation (field 14).
- ⛔ No reasoned presentation of data (SANRA 6): there is no data.
- ⛔ No statement of limitations, conflicts, or funding (fields 17, 19, 20).
- ⚠️ No explicit statement of genre: the article does not state that it is a narrative review. This is inferred from the context of the series and from Europe PMC's classification (review article). Per chapter 14 §4.1, the problem with a narrative review arises when the reader mistakes it for an exhaustive synthesis: here its nature is evident to anyone who knows the series, and invisible to anyone arriving from the DOI.
- ✅ Not missing, and it should be said: the justification of the topic's importance (SANRA 1) and the statement of purpose (SANRA 2) are explicit in the abstract; and the text is written in an immediately operational manner, with contraindications named and not merely alluded to — which is why this chapter is still the source cited sixteen years later.
23 · Valutazione a stelle
| Asse | Voto | Motivazione in una riga |
|---|---|---|
23 · Star rating
| Axis | Score | One-line rationale |
|---|---|---|
| A — Scientific quality | ★☆☆☆☆ | Narrative review with no search strategy, no data, no limitations, no declared conflicts, and with the two most cited numerical recommendations lacking a reference. |
| B — Clinical usefulness | ★★★★★ | States what to do, with which tool, how much to leave, and what not to use — and on these points, it is the only thing written. |
| C — Teaching value | ★★★★★ | The three prohibitions named outright, with the mechanism of harm alongside, are teaching material that sixteen years have not dented. |
| D — Species relevance | ★★★☆☆ | Written for camelids and only for them, but never distinguishing llama from alpaca and never counting a single animal; North American context not transferable in its dates. |
24 · Bottom line
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that a published expert recommendation exists, consistent and cited for sixteen years, according to which in camelids: the three pairs of fighting teeth (upper fourth incisor, upper and lower canines) erupt around 2-2.5 years and should be shortened particularly in males with a diamond bur or obstetric wire, removing the point and leaving 2-4 mm of crown above the gumline to prevent abscessation; that side cutters and forced extraction — especially of the mandibular canine — are strongly discouraged; that the toenail is trimmed flush with the weight-bearing pad, once a year at shearing for all and two to three times a year in animals on soft ground or with corkscrew toenails, due to lack of normal wear; and that routine or over-aggressive molar floating contributes to molar wear down to the gumline, with severe weight loss and death.
It cannot be concluded that any of these indications has been verified: none rests on a study, the two most numerical ones carry not even one reference, not a single animal is counted in the entire article, and the frequency with which the article says «commonly» does not match the only population measurements available today.
