Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes

  • AQualità scientifica2/5
  • BUtilità clinica2/5
  • CValore didattico3/5
  • DRilevanza per la specie2/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Il titolo può essere corretto, l'indirizzo no.Cite this record by its code CRL-O-01 and by its address, which does not change: camelidi.com/collana/CRL-O-01.html. The title may be corrected; the address will not.

1 · Titolo originale

Good that they Choose who they want to be Stroked by" -The Support Quality of Animal-BasedTherapy].

1 · Original title

Full, untruncated title, in the language of publication, in the form of the VernacularTitle field of the PubMed record (efetch, queried 31/08/2026). It is not translated inside the bibliographic reference (CAMELIDI.md §107.3, point 4).

The PubMed record also carries an English version of the title, with the missing spaces the record actually contains and which have not been corrected here, because copying means copying: ["IThink it's Good that they Choose who they want to be Stroked by" -The Support Quality of Animal-BasedTherapy].

2 · Titolo in italiano

2 · Italian title

(editorial translation, not the publisher's) «"Trovo giusto che siano loro a scegliere da chi farsi accarezzare" – La qualità del sostegno nella terapia assistita con gli animali».

3 · Autori

Hawranek Pia · Kasper Lea · Weigl Melanie · Schramm Elisabeth · Taubner Svenja

  • Alpakafarm Hirtenaue, Heidelberg, Germania: Weigl.
  • Klinik für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Universitätsklinikum Freiburg, Medizinische Fakultät, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germania: Schramm.

3 · Authors

Complete list, five authors, in the order and form of the PubMed record (efetch, 31/08/2026), with full given names:

Hawranek Pia · Kasper Lea · Weigl Melanie · Schramm Elisabeth · Taubner Svenja

⛔ Mandatory method note: the authors of this record do NOT come from Crossref, against the house rule, because the Crossref record for this article does not exist (field 6). The source for the names is PubMed, declared here and in field 25. Europe PMC agrees: authorString = «Hawranek P, Kasper L, Weigl M, Schramm E, Taubner S.». No ORCID is registered for any of the five authors.

Affiliations per author, as recorded in PubMed — and they must be read, because field 20 comes back to them:

  • Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, Germany: Hawranek.
  • Institut für Psychosoziale Prävention, Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, Germany: Kasper, Taubner.
  • Alpakafarm Hirtenaue, Heidelberg, Germany: Weigl.
  • Klinik für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Universitätsklinikum Freiburg, Medizinische Fakultät, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany: Schramm.

4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

4 · Affiliation of the corresponding author

⚠️ The corresponding author is not identifiable in the accessible records → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT]. The PubMed record contains no correspondence email address, and there is no Crossref record to query. The affiliation of the first author (Hawranek, Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg) is not a declaration of correspondence: they are two different things, and this record does not confuse them.

5 · Rivista · anno · volume · fascicolo · pagine

Data di pubblicazione dichiarata: dicembre 2023 (data di pubblicazione «2023 Dec», data di pubblicazione a stampa 2023-12-01 in Europe PMC; data di prima pubblicazione 2023-12-01). Copiati dal record, non ricostruiti.

5 · Journal · year · volume · issue · pages

6 · Identificatori

    • il record Crossref di questo articolo risponde HTTP 404 – Resource not found (interrogato il 31/08/2026);
    • https://doi.org/10.13109/prkk.2023.72.8.702 risponde 404 – DOI Not Found, sia in risoluzione normale sia in content negotiation CSL-JSON (31/08/2026);
    • la rivista è depositata in Crossref (ISSN 0032-7034; 1.632 DOI totali al 31/08/2026), e del fascicolo 72(8) risultano depositati gli articoli alle pagine 666-684, 685-701 e 722-738 più il DOI di fascicolo: manca esattamente l'articolo alle pagine 702-721, cioè questo. I DOI vicini (es. 10.13109/prkk.2023.72.8.685) risolvono regolarmente verso l'editore.

6 · Identifiers

  • DOI 10.13109/prkk.2023.72.8.702 — ⛔ and here there is a problem this record documents rather than hides. The DOI is registered in the article's PubMed and Europe PMC metadata, but:
    • api.crossref.org/works/10.13109/prkk.2023.72.8.702 returns HTTP 404 – Resource not found (queried 31/08/2026);
    • https://doi.org/10.13109/prkk.2023.72.8.702 returns 404 – DOI Not Found, both under normal resolution and under CSL-JSON content negotiation (31/08/2026);
    • the journal is deposited in Crossref (ISSN 0032-7034; 1,632 DOIs as of 31/08/2026), and of issue 72(8) the deposited articles are those at pages 666-684, 685-701 and 722-738 plus the issue DOI: exactly the article at pages 702-721 is missing, that is, this one. Neighbouring DOIs (e.g. 10.13109/prkk.2023.72.8.685) resolve normally to the publisher.

Practical consequence: the article exists — the page range matches the gap in the deposit — but its DOI today leads nowhere. Anyone citing this work must cite it by PMID, not by DOI, or hand the reader a reference that does not open.

  • PMID 38051067
  • PMCID: not available. Free full text: no. Europe PMC reports isOpenAccess: "N", inEPMC: "N", inPMC: "N", hasPDF: "N"; the only full-text address listed is the DOI, with availability: "Subscription required" — and that DOI, as above, does not resolve.
  • ORCID of the corresponding author: not available, because the corresponding author is not identified. No ORCID is registered for any of the five authors in any record queried.
  • Open access of the article: not established. The DOI above does not resolve — 404 from Unpaywall, from Crossref and from doi.org, re-checked on 03/09/2026. While the deposit is missing, the access status of this article cannot be established by DOI: the way in is the PMID.

7 · Journal status

Verified on 31/08/2026. Praxis der Kinderpsychologie und Kinderpsychiatrie: ISSN 0032-7034; the Crossref journal record also lists 2196-8225 as electronic ISSN. Publisher per Crossref: Walter de Gruyter GmbH (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co. KG).

  • PubMed / MEDLINE: indexed (NLM ID 0404246; the article has a PMID and publication types «Journal Article» + «English Abstract»).
  • DOAJ: NOT present. Query doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:0032-7034 → 0 results (31/08/2026). The journal is not open access.
  • Crossref: the journal yes, this article no (field 6).

Editorial note: it is a clinical journal of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology, not a veterinary journal nor one of animal welfare science. This is consistent with the subject (the outcome is in the patients) and partly explains, but does not justify, the total absence of data on the animal.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo

Nessuna licenza aperta. Regime: tutti i diritti riservati all'editore.

Nessuna figura, nessuna tabella, nessun estratto esteso. Le frasi in inglese riportate nel campo 15 provengono dall'abstract indicizzato in Europe PMC.

8 · Article licence

No open licence. Europe PMC reports license: null and availability: "Subscription required"; there is no Crossref record from which to read a license field. Regime: all rights reserved to the publisher.

What this record may reproduce: only short verbatim quotations for the purposes of criticism and review, with attribution (chapter 14 §8). No figures, no tables, no extended extracts. The English sentences quoted in field 15 come from the abstract indexed in Europe PMC.

9 · Specie e soggetti

  • Animali: alpaca (Vicugna pacos).

Paese: Germania.

9 · Species and subjects

Two populations, and they must be kept separate because only one was measured.

  • Animals: alpacas (Vicugna pacos). ⛔ The number of alpacas used is not stated in the abstract → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT]. No age, sex, origin, training, housing conditions, or duration of work per animal are stated. The only indirect indication is one author's affiliation to an alpaca farm (field 3), which makes the animals' provenance likely but undocumented.
  • People: 22 adolescent patients with personality impairment (at high risk for, or with already full, personality disorder), in two groups of 11. Of these, 4 patients agreed to an interview after therapy ended. The abstract states neither age, sex, specific diagnoses nor the selection criteria for the four → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT].

Setting: animal-assisted group therapy, adjunct to individual mentalization-based psychotherapy. Country: Germany.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

The article is qualitative and poses no PICO question. The effective question, reformulated by the editors from the structure of the abstract: in adolescents with personality impairment undergoing mentalization-based psychotherapy [P], what do patients report about an adjunct alpaca-assisted group therapy [I] regarding what they liked, what they disliked, which expectations were met or unmet, and the perceived effects on therapeutic success [O]?

⛔ There is no comparator [C], and there is no measured outcome. The absence of the C and the purely reported nature of the O are the most important information in this field.

11 · Disegno dello studio

Studio qualitativo su interviste, all'interno di un progetto pilota di intervento («an animal-assisted group therapy adjunct to individual mentalization-based therapy was developed and piloted»).

Nessuna randomizzazione. Nessuna misura di esito sintomatologica.

11 · Study design

Qualitative interview study within a pilot intervention project («an animal-assisted group therapy adjunct to individual mentalization-based therapy was developed and piloted»). Interviews analysed qualitatively and evaluated by content categories.

It is not: a randomised trial, a controlled study, a pre-post study with instrumental measures, nor an observational study with outcomes. No control group. No randomisation. No symptomatic outcome measure.

12 · Livello di evidenza

OCEBM livello 5 (ragionamento basato su meccanismo / evidenza qualitativa senza controllo; capitolo 14 §1.3).

12 · Level of evidence

OCEBM level 5 (mechanism-based reasoning / uncontrolled qualitative evidence; chapter 14 §1.3).

Consequence line for the reader: from this study one cannot conclude that alpaca-assisted therapy works, nor estimate an effect, nor compare it with anything. One can conclude that a format of intervention was carried out and that four patients out of twenty-two spoke about it in a certain way. Citing it as «the proof that alpacas work in therapy» is stating something false.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

COREQ (Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research) would be the standard proper to this design; alternatively SRQR. In chapter 14 §3 the grids adopted are CONSORT, REFLECT, ARRIVE 2.0, PRISMA 2020, STROBE, CARE and SANRA: for qualitative research the KT has no adopted grid yet, and this record flags that as a gap in the house method, not in the article.

Do the authors declare adherence to a reporting standard? Not apparent from the abstract → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT].

14 · Metodo

14 · Method

From the indexed abstract (full text not accessible):

  • Development and pilot delivery of an adjunct animal-assisted group therapy alongside individual mentalization-based psychotherapy, for adolescents at high risk of, or with, a personality disorder.
  • Two groups, 11 patients each.
  • 4 patients agreed to talk about their experience in an interview after therapy ended.
  • The interviews were analysed qualitatively and evaluated with regard to: what the adolescents liked and disliked, which expectations were met or unmet, and what effects the adjunct intervention had on therapeutic success.
  • The categorised statements are discussed in relation to the theories of human-animal interaction of Hediger et al. (2019).

⛔ Not stated in the abstract → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT]: number and characteristics of the alpacas; duration, frequency and structure of sessions; criteria for selecting the 4 interviewees out of 22; the qualitative analysis method used (thematic analysis? qualitative Inhaltsanalyse?); number of coders and agreement between them; ethical approval; and any measure collected on the animals.

15 · Risultati (dati)

«a new hypothesis about animals as teambuilding catalysts could be established. In sum, alpacas were perceived suitable as therapy animals for adolescents with personality impairments.»

⛔ Nessuna misura sull'animale.

15 · Results (data)

There are no quantitative outcome data. This field, in this record, is by definition sparse, and that is the first thing to know about the article.

The only stated figures are population figures: 2 groups × 11 patients = 22; 4 interviewees (editors' calculation: 4/22 = 18.2 % of participants; the article does not express the proportion).

The reported result, verbatim from the abstract:

«a new hypothesis about animals as teambuilding catalysts could be established. In sum, alpacas were perceived suitable as therapy animals for adolescents with personality impairments.»

The article's title carries a patient's voice: «I think it's good that they choose who they want to be stroked by» — that is, the animal's own choice experienced as a meaningful element. It is a qualitative datum, not a measure.

⛔ No measure on the animal. No physiological indicator, no ethogram, no behavioural score, no record of refusal or withdrawal by the animal. The content of the field is: zero.

Detailed interview content, categories that emerged and patient quotations: [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT] (article in German, subscription, DOI not resolvable).

16 · Authors' interpretation

Attributed to the authors, not to the editors. The authors conclude that alpacas were perceived as suitable therapy animals for this patient population, and propose the hypothesis of animals as teambuilding catalysts within the theoretical frame of Hediger et al. (2019) on human-animal interaction.

Note the verb form the authors themselves chose: «were perceived suitable». The authors do not claim that alpacas are effective: they claim they were perceived suitable. The distinction is theirs, not the editors', and those citing the article almost always erase it.

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations declared by the authors

[TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT]. The indexed abstract contains no limitations section, and the full text is not accessible. This field is not filled by conjecture: one does not write «the authors acknowledge the small sample» if it cannot be read.

The authors do, however, explicitly qualify the work as a pilot («was developed and piloted») and the conclusion as a hypothesis («a new hypothesis … could be established»): two qualifications of scope that must be reported every time the article is cited.

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

18 · Limitations added by the editors

  1. No control group and no measured outcome. It is impossible to separate the effect of the alpaca from the effect of the group, of being outdoors, of novelty, of the attention received, or of the individual psychotherapy to which the intervention was adjunct. This last point is decisive: all patients were simultaneously receiving an active individualised treatment.
  2. 4 interviewees out of 22 (18.2 %; editors' calculation), with undeclared selection criteria. If the four self-selected — «four of whom agreed to talk» — they are plausibly the most willing and the most satisfied. This is the classic risk of favourable selection, and the article gives no elements to exclude it.
  3. Zero data on the animal. No information on number, age, sex, training, working hours, ability to withdraw, or behaviour in session. The title itself turns on the animal's choice («they choose who they want to be stroked by») and that choice was never measured: it is reported by the patients, who are the least suitable observers to establish whether an alpaca was choosing or avoiding.
  4. One author is affiliated to an alpaca farm (Alpakafarm Hirtenaue, field 3). That is not in itself a flaw — it is probably what made the study possible — but it is an interest in the outcome which, in the absence of a conflict-of-interest declaration (field 20), the reader must weigh unaided.
  5. The DOI does not resolve (field 6): a work that is already the only one of its kind is also, in practice, hard to retrieve.
  6. Language and access barrier: German, subscription. Anyone verifying this record must read German and have publisher access. Transferability to the Italian context is not established anywhere.

19 · Finanziamento

19 · Funding

Not declared in the accessible records. The PubMed record contains no Grant element; Europe PMC reports grantsList: null. There is no Crossref record with a funder field. If a funding statement exists in the full text, it has not been read → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT].

20 · Conflicts of interest

Not declared in the accessible records. The CoiStatement field of the PubMed record is empty (31/08/2026).

⚠️ The editors flag an element the reader must know: the third author, Melanie Weigl, is affiliated according to PubMed to «Alpakafarm Hirtenaue Heidelberg Deutschland», that is, to a business that breeds alpacas. Whether the study animals came from there is plausible but undocumented → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT]. This is not a charge against the authors: it is a fact recorded in the record which, absent a formal declaration, must be reported and not passed over (chapter 14 §5.4).

21 · Cosa manca rispetto allo standard di reporting

Rispetto a COREQ (32 voci), mancano, dai record accessibili:

  • caratteristiche del gruppo di ricerca e rapporto con i partecipanti (chi ha intervistato, con quale formazione, con quale relazione preesistente con i pazienti);
  • metodo di campionamento dei 4 intervistati fra i 22 e ragione della numerosità;
  • metodo teorico dichiarato dell'analisi qualitativa, numero di codificatori, verifica della concordanza, restituzione ai partecipanti;
  • traccia dell'intervista, luogo, durata, registrazione;
  • approvazione etica e consenso informato;
  • saturazione dei temi;

21 · What is missing against the reporting standard

Against COREQ (32 items), missing from the accessible records:

  • characteristics of the research team and relationship with participants (who interviewed, with what training, with what pre-existing relationship to the patients);
  • sampling method for the 4 interviewees out of 22 and rationale for the number;
  • declared theoretical method of qualitative analysis, number of coders, agreement check, member checking;
  • interview guide, setting, duration, recording;
  • ethical approval and informed consent;
  • saturation of themes;
  • funding and conflict-of-interest statements.

Against any expectation of reporting on the animals used — which no human grid requires, and that is exactly the problem — everything is missing: number, identity, husbandry, working time, suspension criteria, welfare.

⚠️ Method note for the KT: this record shows that none of the grids adopted in chapter 14 covers the case «human study that uses animals». CONSORT and COREQ ask nothing about the animal; ARRIVE does, but applies to research on animals. This is a gap in the house method, and it is noted here so that chapter 14 may take it up.

COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE — Camelid Research Studies APS · 31/08/2026 · red. CRL

ASSOCIATION COMMENT — Camelid Research Studies APS · 31/08/2026 · CRL editors

This is the most important record in the collection, and not because the article is strong: because it is the only one. In the entire peer-reviewed world literature, in every language queried, this is the sole peer-reviewed work concerning camelids in animal-assisted interventions. And it measures the perception of four adolescents.

What that means and does not mean must be said precisely. It does not mean that alpacas in therapy do not work: it means nobody has ever checked. The difference between «disproved» and «never tested» is the whole difference between a serious organisation and a brochure, and the association will stay on the right side of that line even at the cost of saying, for years, «we do not know».

There is however one point where this article really does give something, and it is its title. The sentence the researchers chose for the cover is a patient's voice appreciating that it is the animals who choose who strokes them. That is the right intuition — freedom of choice and the ability to withdraw are, for the association, the cornerstone of the animal's welfare in session. And it is at the same time the article's paradox: the animal's choice is at the centre of the title and was never measured once. Nobody recorded how often an alpaca approached and how often it moved away. The most interesting datum in the work is the one the work did not collect.

For the association the operational consequence is clear: the first study worth doing is not on the effect in adolescents, it is on the alpaca. Counting approaches and withdrawals in session is within reach of anyone with a stopwatch, an ethogram and the honesty to publish the uncomfortable result too. It would be the first datum of its kind in the species anywhere in the world.

23 · Valutazione a stelle

AssePunteggioMotivazione
Vincolo incrociato rispettato (B ≤ A+2)

AxisScoreRationale
A — Scientific quality★★☆☆☆Qualitative pilot design described intelligibly and correctly qualified by the authors («piloted», «hypothesis»), but no control, no outcome measure, undeclared selection criteria for the 4 interviewees out of 22, no funding or conflict statement, and one author affiliated to an alpaca farm without formal declaration
B — Clinical usefulness★★☆☆☆Suggests a hypothesis to be tested — an assisted group format is feasible and accepted in this population — not a procedure to apply. No dose, duration, frequency or animal-selection criterion can be derived. Cross-constraint respected (B ≤ A+2)
C — Teaching value★★★☆☆Teaches, exemplarily, the distinction between acceptance and efficacy, which is the commonest misreading in this field; and shows, from its own title, that one can put the animal's choice at the centre of the discourse and never measure it
D — Species relevance★★☆☆☆The study subjects are people; the alpaca is the instrument of the intervention and is never measured, nor described by number, age or husbandry. European setting (Germany), so not wholly distant; but for anyone caring for camelids the informational content about the animal is nil

No overall score: the four axes are independent (chapter 14 §11).

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

One can conclude that: an alpaca-assisted group therapy, adjunct to individual mentalization-based psychotherapy, was delivered in Germany to 22 adolescents with personality impairment, and that 4 of them, interviewed after treatment ended, reported perceiving the alpacas as suitable for the therapeutic role — with particular appreciation for the fact that it was the animals who chose the contact.

One cannot conclude that: the alpacas produced any measurable clinical effect, nor that the intervention is superior to another group activity, nor that the animals fare well, badly or indifferently in session. On the animal this study contains not one datum, and none of the reported outcomes was measured with an instrument.
