4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

4 · Affiliation of the corresponding author

⚠️ The corresponding author is not marked as such in the accessible records → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT WITH THE PUBLISHER]. The full text deposited in PMC contains no corresp attribute for any author, and no correspondence email appears in the PubMed record.

Indirect elements, reported as clues and not as a conclusion: the data availability statement refers to «the corresponding author» without naming them; the author-contribution statement attributes conceptualisation, investigation and original drafting to M.B. (Bolcato Marilena), and project administration to A.G. (Gentile Arcangelo). This record does not infer from that who the corresponding author is: they are two different things, and the field remains declared incomplete.

8 · Article licence

CC BY 4.0 — Creative Commons Attribution. Read in the permissions block of the full text deposited in PMC («© 2024 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland … distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license») and confirmed by the Crossref license field (vor version, effective 20/11/2024, creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) and by Europe PMC (license: "cc by").

What this record may reproduce: everything, including figures and tables, with attribution and indication of changes. It is the most permissive licence in the collection, and the only one allowing the authors' stress assessment grid to be reproduced in Italian. The article's five figures (skin lesions, mites under the microscope) are reproducible with attribution; this record does not reproduce them only because it is a text document.

9 · Specie e soggetti

Specie: alpaca (Vicugna pacos). Nessun'altra specie.

Paese: Italia (Italia settentrionale).

9 · Species and subjects

Species: alpaca (Vicugna pacos). No other species.

⛔ The number must be stated carefully, because here there are two numbers.

  • 4 alpacas purchased: males, aged five to six months, from a commercial free-range farm and transferred in June to an animal theme park in Northern Italy, about 300 km from the supplier. In the text they are numbered 1 to 4.
  • 1 of these four — alpaca No. 4 — died suddenly in July, about a month after arrival. Necropsy showed a poor state of nutrition and non-perforated gastric ulcers.
  • 3 alpacas (Nos. 1, 2, 3) are the subjects of the case report proper: those referred in September for dermatological problems, treated and followed up.

Housing: a covered 10 × 7 metre paddock on permanent coconut-fibre bedding, with a 3 m feeding trough and a 3 m drinking trough. No outdoor paddock. After the death of No. 4, a three-sided covered shelter of 3 × 2 m was placed inside the pen, which the animals then used to hide whenever visitors were numerous or came very close to the fence.

Setting: an animal theme park open to the public, with music, children's screams and visitors' dogs; different species close together in relatively small enclosures.

Country: Italy (Northern Italy). It is the only Italian document in this collection.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

The design is a case report and does not permit a full PICO. The question addressed, reformulated by the editors: *in young alpacas (Vicugna pacos) with mixed mange in a setting open to the public [P], what role do stress and its management [I] play in the onset, course and clinical outcome of the dermatosis, compared with acaricide treatment alone [C], in terms of clinical and parasitological resolution and of the animal's stress responses [O]?*

⛔ There is no real comparator: the animals are three, all treated in the same way. The C is implicit in the comparison with the literature, not in the design.

11 · Disegno dello studio

11 · Study design

Clinical case report (PubMed publication type «Case Reports»; Europe PMC: case-report), on three animals, with repeated, structured stress assessment at every clinical examination over 140 days.

It is not: a controlled study, an experimental study, nor a study of animal-assisted interventions. No comparison group, no statistical analysis.

What sets it apart from ordinary case reports — and justifies its presence in this collection — is that the stress assessment is not a marginal comment but a repeated measure with a declared grid, applied at every contact.

12 · Level of evidence

OCEBM level 4 (case report / case series; chapter 14 §1.3).

Consequence line for the reader: from three animals no frequencies can be estimated and no causal relations demonstrated. But a case report can show that a phenomenon exists, and this one does: it shows that young alpacas introduced into a setting open to the public in Italy did display marked and repeated stress responses, and that those responses did not decrease over time. To refute the universal claim «they get used to it», three well-observed animals suffice; to assert «they never get used to it», three animals do not. This record holds that difference firm.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

CARE (case report). The authors do not declare adherence to CARE: the word does not appear in the full text. Reporting is nonetheless largely compliant — dated chronology in a table, diagnosis with laboratory confirmation, intervention with dose and route, outcomes at 21, 50 and 140 days, discussion of mechanisms, ethics, conflicts and funding statements.

14 · Metodo

Letto nel testo pieno.

Storia clinica.

Fonte: Bolcato M. e coll., Vet Sci 2024;11(11):587, testo pieno letto. L'abstract precisa: «repeated at 7, 14, and 21 days». Quattro somministrazioni in tutto.

  1. identificazione degli stressori presenti;
  2. risposte comportamentali: sputo, orecchie all'indietro, tentativi di fuga (corsa/salto), calci, decubito volontario, vocalizzazione, inseguimento, minzione, tremore — ciascuna con frequenza su scala a 4 livelli: (0) mai; (1) una volta; (2) 2-3 volte; (3) di continuo;
  3. misure fisiologiche: tachicardia, tachipnea, ipertermia, midriasi.

14 · Method

Read in the full text.

Clinical history. Four male alpacas aged 5-6 months purchased in June from a commercial free-range farm and transported some 300 km. At the first inspection, three days after arrival, they showed aversion to music, children's screams and the barking of visitors' dogs; they were fearful and refused approach and handling during routine examinations. In the following weeks: continued reluctance towards human approach, hiding from visitors, poor appetite and stunted growth. In July, sudden death of alpaca No. 4; necropsy: poor state of nutrition, non-perforated gastric ulcers. After that event the 3 × 2 m shelter was installed. In August the three survivors still showed fear on handling but less discomfort towards visitors, with appetite and weight increasing — in a month, the authors note, in which the park was open but with few visitors and no school groups. In September the three were referred for dermatological problems.

Diagnosis. Clinical examination of the three animals (scaly, crusty lesions on ear pinnae, sternum, axillae, abdomen, perineum, medial hind limbs, muzzle; alopecia, hyperkeratosis, skin wrinkling; mild itching in No. 1 only). Faecal examination: negative. Deep skin scrapings from costal, axillary and perineal regions: presence of Sarcoptes scabiei in all three alpacas. At day 21, minimal presence of Chorioptes bovis.

Treatment — and here lies the only administration figure in the whole collection, with all its attributes on the same line:

⚠️ Ivermectin (Ivomec®, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Italia S.p.A., Padua) by the SUBCUTANEOUS route, at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg, on a WEEKLY basis, in male alpacas (Vicugna pacos) aged 5-6 months. Source: Bolcato M. et al., Vet Sci 2024;11(11):587, full text read. The abstract specifies: «repeated at 7, 14, and 21 days». Four administrations in total. ⛔ This is the dosage of a clinical case in three animals, reported out of fidelity to the source: it is not a therapeutic recommendation of the association, and no antiparasitic is licensed for the species (chapter 20).

Pen cleaning and disinfection on days 1 and 21. Control skin scrapings on day 21 and about one month after the last treatment (day 50).

The stress assessment grid — the methodological element of interest to this collection. At every clinical examination the authors recorded:

  1. identification of the stressors present;
  2. behavioural responses: spitting, ears backwards, escape attempts (running/jumping), kicking, deliberate collapsing, vocalisation, chasing, urination, trembling — each with frequency on a 4-level scale: (0) never; (1) once; (2) 2-3 times; (3) continuously;
  3. physiological measures: tachycardia, tachypnoea, hyperthermia, dilated pupils.

Chronology of the assessments (Table 1 of the article): clinical examination on days 0, 1, 7, 14, 21, 50, 140; stress assessment at every clinical examination except day 0; parasitological examinations, treatments and pen cleaning on the days given above.

Deliberate reduction of confounding factors: the procedures were performed in the same way, at the same time of day, capturing the animals in the same order, to reduce unpredictability.

Why cortisol was not measured — and the authors explain it. Measuring cortisol, creatine kinase, total protein, blood urea nitrogen or glucose would have required invasive procedures (blood collection on top of physical restraint), «stressful in themselves and not fully justifiable from a clinical point of view», with a risk of misinterpretation of results and of confounding the clinical assessment of the patients. It is a declared and reasoned choice, not an omission.

Ethics. The authors state that this is non-experimental clinical veterinary practice, not falling under Directive 2010/63/EU, that no official or institutional ethical approval was required, and that the animals were examined and treated with the owner's consent and according to good veterinary practice.

15 · Risultati (dati)

  • Giorno 21: miglioramento clinico evidente in tutti e tre. Raschiati ascellari: Sarcoptes scabiei* assente, Chorioptes bovis* presente in misura minima in tutti e tre.

«Behavioral responses were recorded in the three alpacas. The type and frequency of the responses did not change or decrease over time.»

La stessa affermazione compare nel corpo del testo: «Notably, the type and frequency of the behavioral responses did not change or decrease over time.»

  • tachicardia: da 120 a 130 bpm;
  • tachipnea: da 28 a 35 — l'articolo scrive «bpm» anche per la frequenza respiratoria, dove l'unità corretta è atti respiratori al minuto; la scheda riporta il numero come pubblicato e segnala lo scivolone di unità;

15 · Results (data)

All figures refer to 3 male alpacas (Vicugna pacos), 5-6 months old, in an Italian theme park — plus the fourth animal, which died before treatment began.

Clinical and parasitological outcome

  • Days 7 and 14: in all three animals itching resolved, but lesions had not improved.
  • Day 21: clinical improvement evident in all three. Rare crusty lesions without hyperkeratosis on sternum, axillae and medial hind limbs in No. 1; the same lesions confined to the axillary region in Nos. 2 and 3. Axillary scrapings: Sarcoptes scabiei* absent, Chorioptes bovis* minimally present in all three.
  • Day 50 (one month after the last treatment): parasitological examination negative on all affected skin sites, in all three animals.
  • Day 140 (three months later): no clinical signs, good state of nutrition, normal physiological parameters, complete hair regrowth in all three.

⭐ And the sentence that titles the table in the article, verbatim:

«Behavioral responses were recorded in the three alpacas. The type and frequency of the responses did not change or decrease over time.»

The same statement appears in the body of the text: «Notably, the type and frequency of the behavioral responses did not change or decrease over time.»

⚠️ The period covered by Table 2 is not written in the article. Stress assessment is marked at days 1, 7, 14, 21, 50 and 140 (Table 1), but handling stopped at day 21 and the animals were afterwards inspected without restraint. The card reads the sentence as referring to the 21 days of weekly handling; the reaction to the veterinarian's entry at day 140 is reported by the article in words, not with the table's scores.

The physiological measures, recorded in the three animals on all occasions:

  • tachycardia: 120 to 130 bpm;
  • tachypnoea: 28 to 35 — the article writes «bpm» for respiratory rate too, where the correct unit is breaths per minute; this record reports the figure as published and flags the unit slip;
  • rectal temperature always normal: 38.0 to 38.7 °C.

⛔ The article does not report reference intervals for alpaca heart and respiratory rate, nor baseline values for these three animals in the absence of handling: the terms «tachycardia» and «tachypnoea» are a clinical judgement by the authors, not a comparison against a declared threshold → [TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT] for the source of the normal values the authors used.

The decision, which is the most important result of the work

Given the improvement in clinical condition but also the persistence of numerous behavioural and physiological signs of severe stress during handling and treatment, it was decided to suspend treatment at day 21, even though the scrapings still showed live parasites. The animals were then inspected weekly without handling or restraint.

And the outcome of that decision: at day 50 the parasitological test was negative; at day 140 there were no clinical signs and the coat had fully regrown. Suspending worked.

The final-day datum. At day 140 the three alpacas showed behavioural improvement in the presence of visitors, remaining in the pen area without hiding. But whenever the veterinarian entered the pen, their behaviour changed: increased alertness (ears backwards), vocalisations and escape attempts. Four and a half months after first contact.

16 · Interpretazione degli autori

Attribuita agli autori.

«chronic stress, resulting in a poor state of nutrition and gastric ulcers, likely caused the death of alpaca No. 4 one month after arrival.»

16 · Authors' interpretation

Attributed to the authors. They hold that stress played a pathogenetic role in the onset and course of the dermatosis, and reconstruct the mechanism: activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and of the sympathetic nervous system, with documented effects on the skin (local production of CRH and ACTH, IL-18, cortisol, hair follicle regulation, epidermal barrier, wound healing).

They consider that the animals were already in a state of severe stress on arrival: they were young, had been separated from their native group and had faced a long journey to a completely different environment; and that the park presented multiple stress sources — music, children's screams, barking dogs, restriction of movement due to the absence of an outdoor paddock, initial absence of a shelter, forced proximity to humans.

On the death of the fourth animal they write, with the caution of a hypothesis:

«chronic stress, resulting in a poor state of nutrition and gastric ulcers, likely caused the death of alpaca No. 4 one month after arrival.»

On alpaca No. 3, the most stressed (trembling and urination), they hypothesise that the release of fear pheromones with urine may have produced emotional contagion, affecting the welfare of the group.

They conclude that the identification and management of stressors must be a fundamental and integral part of therapy, especially in species particularly susceptible to stress such as the alpaca, and that studies of treatment options that are not only medical but holistic are urgently needed.

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

  • sull'origine dell'infestazione presentano due ipotesi alternative (già infestati all'allevamento di origine con manifestazione clinica favorita dallo stress, oppure infestati nel nuovo ambiente) e dichiarano che la seconda «sembra più probabile» sulla base del ciclo vitale degli acari, senza sostenere di averlo dimostrato;
  • sulla morte del n. 4 usano «likely caused», cioè un'attribuzione probabile, non certa;
  • sul contagio emotivo usano «could have resulted», cioè un'ipotesi;

17 · Limitations declared by the authors

[TO BE VERIFIED IN THE FULL TEXT] for a formal limitations section: the article contains none. The authors do, however, express explicit reservations in the body of the text, which must be reported as theirs and not as the editors':

  • on the origin of the infestation they present two alternative hypotheses (already infested at the farm of origin with clinical onset favoured by stress, or infested in the new environment) and state that the second «seems more likely» on the basis of the mites' life cycle, without claiming to have proved it;
  • on the death of No. 4 they use «likely caused», that is, a probable attribution, not certain;
  • on emotional contagion they use «could have resulted», that is, a hypothesis;
  • they state expressly that no standardised treatment protocol exists for mixed infestations in the alpaca, and that the protocol chosen had been tested in the llama (Lama glama) — a correct species declaration, in a field where that is rare.

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

  1. ⛔ Tre animali. Nessuna frequenza, nessuna proporzione, nessuna generalizzazione.

18 · Limitations added by the editors

  1. ⛔ Three animals. No frequencies, no proportions, no generalisation. Every time this work is cited, the number three must appear in the same sentence.
  2. The stress grid is applied by the same clinicians performing the procedure, without blinding and without a second observer: no inter-observer agreement is measured. With scores this saturated (3 out of 3 in two domains for all three animals) the risk of error is low, but the repeatability datum is absent.
  3. No continuous instrumental physiological measure and no baseline in the absence of handling: «tachycardia» and «tachypnoea» are clinical judgements without a declared reference interval (field 15). The authors explain why they did not measure cortisol, and the reasoning is defensible, but the fact remains that the only physiological datum is by eye and stethoscope.
  4. ⛔ This is not a study of animal-assisted interventions. The handling here is therapeutic and necessary — scrapings, injections, restraint —, not recreational or voluntary. Transferring the result to an assisted session is an extrapolation, and this record marks it as such: what the work shows is that these alpacas, in this setting, under this handling, did not habituate. It does not show that no alpaca ever habituates to any contact.
  5. The confounding between disease and stress cannot be untangled: the animals were simultaneously stressed and ill with mange, which is itself itchy and debilitating. That the failure to habituate depended on the painful nature of the procedure rather than on human presence as such is not excluded.
  6. The reconstruction of alpaca No. 4's death is plausible but is not an aetiological diagnosis. Gastric ulcers and poor nutritional state are compatible with chronic stress; no examination ruled out other causes, and no laboratory data are reported. The authors write «likely», and this record writes no more.
  7. The absence of a formal limitations section is itself a departure from CARE (field 21).

19 · Finanziamento

«This research received no external funding.» Dichiarazione letta nel testo pieno (blocco Funding Statement). Crossref: campo finanziatore assente.

19 · Funding

«This research received no external funding.» Statement read in the full text (Funding Statement block). Crossref: funder field absent. The author-contribution statement nonetheless attributes «funding acquisition» to A.G. and A.P.: wording that coexists with the absence of external funding and points to university resources.

20 · Conflitti di interesse

«The authors declare no conflicts of interest.»

20 · Conflicts of interest

«The authors declare no conflicts of interest.» Statement read both in the full text and in the CoiStatement field of the PubMed record.

None of the authors is affiliated to the theme park, which is not named in the article. The proprietary product cited (Ivomec®, Boehringer Ingelheim) appears as identification of the product used, with no declared relationship with the company.

21 · Cosa manca rispetto allo standard di reporting

Rispetto a CARE (13 voci):

  • manca la parola «case report» nel titolo (voce 1 di CARE): il titolo dice «Stress Reduction in Alpaca Mange Management» e non segnala il disegno — chi lo incontra in una bibliografia può scambiarlo per uno studio;
  • manca una sezione formale di limiti;
  • manca la prospettiva del paziente, che in medicina veterinaria diventa la prospettiva del proprietario o del detentore: non è riportato che cosa pensasse il parco della sospensione del trattamento;
  • mancano gli intervalli di riferimento per i parametri fisiologici giudicati alterati;
  • manca il peso corporeo degli animali, che pure è il denominatore del dosaggio in mg/kg;

21 · What is missing against the reporting standard

Against CARE (13 items):

  • the words «case report» are missing from the title (CARE item 1): the title reads «Stress Reduction in Alpaca Mange Management» and does not signal the design — anyone meeting it in a bibliography may mistake it for a study;
  • a formal limitations section is missing;
  • the patient perspective is missing, which in veterinary medicine becomes the owner's or keeper's perspective: it is not reported what the park thought of the treatment suspension;
  • reference intervals are missing for the physiological parameters judged abnormal;
  • the animals' body weight is missing, though it is the denominator of the mg/kg dose;
  • adherence to CARE is not declared.

Present and clear, by contrast: dated chronology in a table, detailed clinical history, diagnosis with parasitological confirmation, intervention with active substance, product, dose, route and frequency, outcomes at 21, 50 and 140 days, discussion of mechanisms, ethics statement, data availability, funding and conflicts.

COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE — Camelid Research Studies APS · 31/08/2026 · red. CRL

  3. Nove risposte comportamentali, scala 0-3, a ogni contatto.

22 · Editorial comment

ASSOCIATION COMMENT — Camelid Research Studies APS · 31/08/2026 · CRL editors

This is not the record of a study on animal-assisted interventions. It is the record the association must read before speaking about animal-assisted interventions, and the reason is a single line in Table 2: «the type and frequency of the responses did not change or decrease over time».

«They get used to it» is the most repeated phrase in the whole popular literature on alpacas before the public. Here is an Italian group that measured, with a grid written in advance, and followed the animals for one hundred and forty days, and found the opposite: three alpacas out of three with ears backwards and escape attempts at the top of the scale at every contact with handling, from the first to the last of the twenty-one days of treatment. And at four and a half months, when they were by then at ease with visitors, it was enough for the veterinarian to walk in for everything to return. The animals had learned perfectly well: they had learned who.

It must be said honestly what this does not prove. It does not prove that no alpaca ever habituates: the handling here was painful and necessary, the animals were very young, freshly transported, ill and untrained — the exact opposite of the population in CRL-O-02, where thirty alpacas trained for six months barely reacted. The two records together say the right thing: the alpaca's tolerance of human contact is not a property of the species, it is the product of a history — age, training, predictability, ability to withdraw. Anyone promising calm as a natural trait of the alpaca is selling something that must instead be built, and that can be lost.

Then there is alpaca No. 4, who does not appear in chapter 22 and who is the gravest fact in the whole collection. Four animals of 5-6 months bought, loaded, taken three hundred kilometres and placed in a pen with no outdoor paddock and no shelter, amid music, children and dogs. One died within a month, with gastric ulcers and undernourished. The shelter — three metres by two, covered on three sides — arrived afterwards, and worked immediately. This is the measured, published cost of an arrangement decided without thinking about the animal; and the thing that corrected it cost very little.

Three operational rules follow for the association, and none requires a laboratory:

  1. The refuge is not an accessory. A shelter in which the animal can withdraw from the public's gaze is the first thing installed, not the first thing cut. Here it was installed after a death, and the animals began using it immediately.
  2. The suspension threshold is written in advance. These clinicians interrupted an effective therapy with the parasites still alive, because the animal was suffering too much — and they were right: at fifty days the parasitological test was negative anyway. An association session sheet must carry, written in advance and not decided on the spot, the threshold beyond which that animal leaves the activity.
  3. Nine behavioural responses, scale 0-3, at every contact. This article's grid is under CC BY 4.0 (field 8): it can be translated, adapted and used, citing the source. It is the most ready-to-use instrument in the whole collection, and it comes from an Italian group.

Finally, a fact about the house method. This record exists because the full text was read. Chapter 22 had correctly summarised the abstract — three alpacas, stress, suspension — and in the abstract the fourth alpaca is not there. The article's hardest datum was on page two.

23 · Valutazione a stelle

AssePunteggioMotivazione
Vincolo incrociato rispettato (B ≤ A+2)

23 · Star rating

AxisScoreRationale
A — Scientific quality★★☆☆☆Case report with dated chronology in a table (days 0, 1, 7, 14, 21, 50, 140), laboratory-confirmed diagnosis, differential discussed, stress assessment grid declared in advance and applied at every contact, ethics, funding and conflicts declared — that is, much of CARE. But no comparison group, no statistical analysis, three animals, no limitations section, no baseline or physiological reference interval: this is precisely the two-star level of the grid
B — Clinical usefulness★★★☆☆Offers two replicable procedures described in sufficient detail — the nine-response behavioural grid on a 0-3 scale and the stress-based suspension criterion —, both usable tomorrow and openly licensed, to be adopted with the caution imposed by the level of evidence. It does not reach four because the result comes from three animals and the setting is therapeutic, not assisted. Cross-constraint respected (B ≤ A+2)
C — Teaching value★★★★★First-choice teaching reference on what an alpaca's stress under handling in a setting open to the public looks like: anyone who has to learn that starts here. It is the only document showing, with a per-animal table and observation running to 140 days, the failure to habituate; and it teaches, through a death, that housing is a clinical decision
D — Species relevance★★★★☆Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) in Italy, in a housing setting — a park open to the public — directly comparable to that in which many Italian operations that speak of animal-assisted interventions work. It does not reach five because of the sample size (three animals) and because the 2024 work has so far 2 citations in Crossref

No overall score: the four axes are independent (chapter 14 §11).

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

One can conclude that: in three male alpacas (Vicugna pacos) aged 5-6 months, in a theme park in Northern Italy, undergoing weekly handling for treatment of a mixed mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei and Chorioptes bovis, the behavioural stress responses neither decreased nor changed over 21 days — ears backwards and escape attempts at the top of the scale (3 = continuously) in all three, vocalisation at 2-3, with trembling and urination in No. 3 only — accompanied at every contact by heart rate 120-130/min and respiratory rate 28-35/min at normal rectal temperature (38.0-38.7 °C); that treatment was suspended at day 21 because of the animals' stress despite the persistence of live parasites, and that nevertheless the parasitological examination was negative at day 50 and at 140 days there were no clinical signs, with complete hair regrowth; and that at 140 days the animals still reacted to the veterinarian entering with alertness, vocalisations and escape attempts. A fourth alpaca from the same batch had died a month after arrival, with poor nutritional state and non-perforated gastric ulcers.

One cannot conclude that: alpacas never habituate to human contact — these were very young, freshly transported, untrained and subjected to a painful, necessary procedure, conditions opposite to those of CRL-O-02 —; nor that stress caused the mange or the fourth animal's death, which the authors themselves qualify as «likely»; nor anything about the frequency of these events, because there are three animals. Nothing in this work concerns animal-assisted interventions, and the transfer to that setting is an editorial inference, declared as such.

  • CRL-O-02 — the same question with the opposite answer, in healthy trained adult alpacas. The two records are read together or not at all.
  • CRL-O-01 — the animal's choice at the centre of a title and never measured by anyone; here, by contrast, the choice to withdraw was observed and changed a clinical decision.
  • CRL-O-03 — why no wool cortisol would have caught this: it is an acute, repeated stress, visible to the naked eye.
  • CRL-D-01 — the absence of validated pain scales in camelids: here the itching and pain of mange are described, not measured.
