Titolo originale

«Infectious causes of reproductive loss in camelids»

Original title

«Infectious causes of reproductive loss in camelids»

⚠️ This is a narrative review, not a study, and this is the first thing the card must say. It has no subjects of its own, no declared search method, no denominator of its own: every number it contains is a number the author reports from others, and every sentence of this card must be read with that subject in front of it. The second warning concerns the abstract: three of its statements do not find in the body of the text the support that their strength leads one to believe, and they are discussed below, in Main results.

Impatto misurabile del singolo articolo: 170 citazioni secondo OpenAlex all'11/10/2026.

Licenza dell'articolo originale: Copyright © 2006 Elsevier Inc., tutti i diritti riservati, con un permesso aggiuntivo scritto nel testo depositato: Elsevier concede che la ricerca legata al proprio centro risorse COVID-19 sia disponibile in PubMed Central «with rights for unrestricted research re-use and analyses in any form or by any means with acknowledgement of the original source», «for as long as the COVID-19 resource centre remains active».

Read on 11/10/2026 from the Europe PMC full-text service (the version deposited in PubMed Central): introduction, all sections, the four tables and the 151 bibliographic entries. The cited sources were not read: everything the card attributes to a cited work it attributes through the review.

Journal status (verified on 11/10/2026): Theriogenology, ISSN 0093-691X (print) / 1879-3231 (electronic), publisher Elsevier BV. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: no (query by ISSN, zero records). OpenAlex: 19,134 indexed works, source not open access.

Measurable impact of the single article: 170 citations according to OpenAlex as of 11/10/2026. For the camelid literature this is a high number, and it is a reason to read this review with more care, not less: what it contains propagates.

License of the original article: Copyright © 2006 Elsevier Inc., all rights reserved, with an additional permission written into the deposited text: Elsevier grants that research related to its COVID-19 resource centre be available in PubMed Central «with rights for unrestricted research re-use and analyses in any form or by any means with acknowledgement of the original source», «for as long as the COVID-19 resource centre remains active». It is not a Creative Commons license: it is a publisher's permission, conditional on the continued existence of that resource centre. Read on the deposited text on 11/10/2026. The permission allows reading the text in order to write a card of our own; it does not authorize this card to republish tables or figures. This card may reproduce: factual data restated in our own words and brief quoted citations. No tables, no figures: the article's four tables (organisms isolated from the genital tract, endometrial biopsy classes, formulas for gestational age, vaccines) are described in words, never reproduced.

Specie e soggetti

Nessun soggetto proprio.

Species and subjects

No subjects of its own. The review reports data on camels (the largest part: brucellosis, trypanosomosis, camel pox, Q fever, subclinical mastitis; partly explicitly dromedary, and for mastitis alone also Bactrian, with cell count and California test), llamas and alpacas (uterine infections, abortion, mastitis, neonatal mortality), and guanaco and vicuña (only the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in Argentina). The data on South American camelids are mostly North American; those on camels come from the Middle East and from eastern and northern Africa.

⚠️ The species changes from one line of the review to the next, and sometimes within the same sentence («SAC» for llama and alpaca together, «camels» for dromedary and Bactrian together). In this card «camels» translates the text's «camels», that is, the two Old World camelids that cannot be separated; «dromedary» appears only where the text writes «dromedary»; «South American camelids» translates «SAC». Where the text does not separate them, the card writes «species not separated».

Tipo di studio e livello di evidenza

Revisione narrativa.

In più, la rassegna dichiara di sé più volte di poggiare su ciò che manca: «there is no clinical trial», «no studies on vaccination or eradication strategies», «no scientific reports regarding their efficacy».

Study type and level of evidence

Narrative review. The authors declare the aim to «review the epidemiology, etio-pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention» of the infectious diseases that cause reproductive loss; they declare no search strategy, no databases, no inclusion criteria.

Level of evidence: narrative review, therefore structured expert opinion on a literature that the reader cannot reconstruct. Moreover, the review states about itself several times that it rests on what is missing: «there is no clinical trial», «no studies on vaccination or eradication strategies», «no scientific reports regarding their efficacy».

Consequence for the reader. The selection of the works discussed is not reproducible: this card summarizes one author's reading, not the state of the literature. The review's clinical statements are cited as «the authors report», and where possible one goes back to the primary work. A part of the sources cannot be traced: among the 151 references there are at least 26 conference proceedings, theses, anonymous surveillance reports and working documents (editorial count by keyword), and 22 have among their authors one or more of the authors of the review. The text also cites six times the authors' clinical or personal observation as the source of a datum, and once a personal communication.

Relevant reporting standard: for narrative reviews no reporting guideline exists; the SANRA quality scale is used (chapter 14 §4.2). The authors declare no standard. The score compiled by the editorial team, item by item, is in the rating box: 6/12.

In breve

In brief

Reproductive losses in camelids (infertility, pregnancy loss, diseases of the udder and neonatal mortality) are, for the authors, largely of infectious origin. Uterine infection is presented as the main problem of clinical practice, with E. coli and Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus among the most frequently cited agents; the cause on which the authors insist most, however, is a management gesture, repeated and ill-timed breeding in induced-ovulating species. For abortion the review lists the agents reported in camels (brucellosis, trypanosomosis, camel pox, Q fever, toxoplasmosis) and in South American camelids (leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, chlamydiosis, listeriosis, neosporosis, bovine viral diarrhea virus infection), and declares that the studies on incidence and etiology are scarce. Clinical mastitis is described as infrequent; subclinical mastitis of the dromedary as highly variable between countries. Neonatal mortality is attributed mainly to diarrhea after failure of passive transfer. The review closes with biosecurity measures and a list of vaccines used in pregnant females, without efficacy data.

Why this study matters

First reason: it is the map, not the territory, and it says where the territory is empty. Almost every section contains a sentence declaring the absence of data: no study on uterine defense mechanisms in camelids, no clinical trial comparing treatments of endometritis, no study on the relative role of the individual agents in abortion, no efficacy data for the ovine vaccine against chlamydiosis used on alpaca farms. A reader looking for what is proven finds here, first of all, what is not.

Second reason: the management cause. For the authors the single most important factor in uterine infection is repeated breeding (overbreeding), and the sequence they describe is physiological before it is infectious: in camelids, which ovulate by stimulus, breeding outside the right follicular phase damages the endometrium and the cervix; behavioral receptivity does not necessarily coincide with ovarian activity; the penis enters the cervical canal and reaches the uterine cavity. It is a cause that the breeder can avoid without any drug.

Third reason: the path of an abortion. The review insists on a simple gesture: keep the placenta and send the whole fetus to the laboratory. The path is described in enough detail to be followed (see Main results).

Fourth reason, and it is a methodological value. This review is much cited, and its abstract says more than its text. A CRL card exists also for this: to read the whole review and say where the abstract, which is what almost everyone reads, departs from the body.

Obiettivo

Dichiarato dagli autori: «The goal of the present paper is to review the epidemiology, etio-pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention of the major reproductive loss-causing infectious diseases. Aspects of biosecurity in breeding operations are also discussed.»

Objective

Stated by the authors: «The goal of the present paper is to review the epidemiology, etio-pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention of the major reproductive loss-causing infectious diseases. Aspects of biosecurity in breeding operations are also discussed.»

Clinical question (editorial formulation; the PICO format does not fully apply to a descriptive review, which does not compare interventions): in breeding female and male camelids [P], which infectious agents [exposure] are reported as a cause of infertility, abortion, mastitis and neonatal mortality [outcome], and which prevention measures does the review indicate?

Disegno dello studio

Study design

Narrative review of 15 pages, 151 references, four tables, no figures. The structure is by system and by reproductive event: uterine infections (pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, cytology, culture and biopsy, treatment, prevention), male infertility, abortion (etiology and diagnostic procedure), mastitis, neonatal losses, and finally strategies for reducing losses.

⚠️ Not verifiable and therefore not asserted: the presence of a criterion for choosing the cited works (absent, as far as the text says), the age of the data (many references range from 1947 to 1990), the share of references that the author read in the original text.

Metodi / Protocollo

Dosaggi.

Methods / Protocol

The review has no methods. No database, no search string, no range of years, no declared language, no inclusion or exclusion criteria. The sources include journal articles, chapters, conference proceedings, veterinary theses in French, anonymous surveillance reports and personal communications. Where the author speaks in the first person («in our experience», «the senior author prefers») the text flags it, and the card takes it into account.

Dosages. The review reports many dose figures in the section on the treatment of endometritis: antibiotics for intrauterine infusion, oxytocin, chorionic gonadotropin, gonadotropin-releasing hormone and an analogue. The card does not report them, per the series' rule (dose, route, species and source in the same line): for those figures either the route of administration is missing, or the species is a group («South American camelids» versus «dromedaries»), or there is no specific source. The review itself declares that no clinical trial exists comparing treatments of endometritis in camelids, and that most clinicians use treatments proposed for the cow and the horse: the figures are therefore extrapolated, not measured in the camelid, by the authors' own admission. Whoever looks for them will find them in the Treatment section of the article, with this warning.

A single complete dosage, referring to one case: in one llama with mastitis from Streptococcus zooepidemicus, three days after parturition, ampicillin 11 mg/kg subcutaneously every 24 hours for 7 days, plus intramammary cephapirin (dose not reported), with a favorable outcome (source: clinical case published in 1997, reference 107; measured in a single animal, no proof of efficacy).

Risultati principali

⚠️ Primo. L'abstract dice: «Abortion rates due to infectious diseases vary from 10% to more than 70% in some areas.»

⚠️ Secondo. L'abstract dice che leptospirosi, toxoplasmosi e clamidiosi «have been diagnosed as the major causes of abortion in llamas and alpacas».

«Uterine infections are considered to be the most common cause of reproductive failure in camelidae.» — È un'affermazione sullo stato della letteratura, sostenuta nel testo da nove fonti e subito corretta dagli stessi autori con «limited data on the incidence».

«The most important factor in establishment of uterine infection is over-breeding, which should be avoided by proper veterinary evaluation of the female.»

«It is important to realize that no vaccination program is 100% efficacious in disease prevention.»

Main results

(everything that follows is «the authors report»; the primary sources were not read)

Uterine infections and infertility of the female

The authors report that uterine infection is considered the most common cause of reproductive failure in camelids, and add immediately that the data on the incidence of endometritis and metritis, on pathogenesis and on treatment are limited.

  • Baseline fertility (context, not infection): in camels the calving rate does not as a rule exceed 40 % in nomadic herds and 70 % in more intensive ones (denominators not stated); in the alpaca the mean annual fertility reported is 50 % and in the llama the mean calving rate is 45.9 % (both from sources of 1970 and 1988, the latter a conference proceeding); in the alpaca embryonic mortality within 30 days of gestation is reported at 50-57.8 % (conference proceeding of 1985, denominator not stated).
  • Involution times: uterine involution should be complete within 15 days in South American camelids and 25 in camels; a delay raises suspicion of infection.
  • Cytology: after uterine lavage with saline solution, the presence of 3-5 neutrophils per high-power field is indicated as relevant for the diagnosis of endometritis (species not separated).
  • Culture: the agents most frequently isolated from the uterus of camelids with endometritis, species not separated, are Escherichia coli, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, β-hemolytic streptococci, Enterococcus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Proteus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Arcanobacter pyogenes (as in the text). Campylobacter fetus, Tritrichomonas fetus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are reported in infertile camels as possible venereally transmitted agents. The interpretation of culture is defined as «very difficult»: the article's table reports isolates from grossly healthy dromedary uteri (63.6 % with bacterial growth, denominator not stated), and for the llama a concordance between culture and histology in 18 animals (66.7 %), which implies 27 biopsies. The authors conclude that a negative culture does not exclude a chronic infection.
  • Biopsy: the grade classification (from 1A, normal endometrium, to 3B, neoplasia) is borrowed from the horse and reported as also adopted for the dromedary. Fibrosis is graded by number of layers: mild 1-3, moderate 4-10, severe over 10. A particular form of chronic granulomatous endometritis of the dromedary is described, with the caveat that a preliminary study suggests it may be normal lymphoid tissue.
  • Treatment: the authors declare that no clinical trial exists and that treatments from the cow and the horse are used (lavage, intrauterine antibiotic infusion, systemic antibiotic or combinations). The pregnancy rate after treatment is reported between 30 % and 60 % (two sources, one on the llama and one on the dromedary; species not separated, denominators not stated). Intrauterine infusion of homologous plasma twice at 24 hours is reported for llama and alpaca, without volume.
  • Breeding after treatment: sexual rest of 2-4 weeks and «minimal contamination breeding», that is, ultrasound monitoring, a single breeding with a mature follicle and antibiotic infusion 24 hours later, in susceptible females no more than once a week. The mature follicle is indicated at 12-18 mm in camels and 8-12 mm in llama and alpaca.

Male infertility

In male camels, trypanosomosis from Trypanosoma evansi is associated with severe testicular degeneration; the effects on the testis disappear within 75-90 days of recovery, but infertility may persist or become permanent. Orchitis and epididymitis are associated with brucellosis and with filariosis from Dipetalonema evansi (reported in camels), with an incidence of 2.3-10 % in humid regions (denominator not stated). In llama and alpaca testicular infections derive mostly from scrotal wounds; a case of septic orchitis in an alpaca by hematogenous route from S. equi zooepidemicus is described. For unilateral orchitis the authors indicate orchiectomy as the best choice, because the affected testis always degenerates.

Abortion

The authors declare that studies on the incidence and etiology of abortion in camelids are scarce, and attribute the gap to the lack of routine laboratory investigation. Abortion is reported as low in the llama and the alpaca and between 2 % and 25 % in the dromedary (seven sources, denominators not stated).

  • Dromedary (and camels): brucellosis (Brucella abortus and B. melitensis), endemic in almost all producing countries, especially where the animals live together with other ruminants; no study on vaccination or eradication; trypanosomosis, with early and late fetal loss «up to 80 %» in the affected animals, a figure attributed to a personal observation of one of the authors; Q fever (in Chad a seroprevalence of 80 % in the camels tested and 100 % of herds with seropositive animals, denominators not stated); toxoplasmosis, camel pox, Bacillus cereus, bluetongue, and leptospirosis as a possible future problem in intensive dairy farms. The prevention of trypanosomosis with a repeated preventive treatment based on melarsomine during the risk season is reported as effective, with two sources (a preliminary control study conducted in Morocco on the dromedary).
  • South American camelids: the agents reported in North America are leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and chlamydiosis, plus nonspecific uterine infections. Single cases: Listeria, Sarcocystis aucheniae (Dalmeny disease), Streptococcus sanguis, Arcanobacter pyogenes; in one llama an abortion experimentally induced with Brucella abortus, with lesions similar to those of ruminants. Neospora: in Peru, in alpaca and llama (species not separated), Neospora DNA in 3 fetuses out of 15 by PCR and antigens in 2 fetuses by immunohistochemistry. Leptospirosis in Argentina: seroprevalence between 47.3 and 96.2 % in llamas, between 0 and 13 % in guanacos and between 9 and 62.8 % in vicuñas (ranges between surveys, denominators not stated). Vaccinated alpacas respond variably and immunity may be short-lived. In North American endemic areas, polyvalent bovine vaccines are used, three or four times a year. Chlamydiosis: the prevalence of abortion has not been thoroughly evaluated; ovine vaccines are used without any scientific report on efficacy.
  • Bovine viral diarrhea virus: early fetal loss, abortion and stillbirth are reported in llamas and camels, along with the birth of persistently infected cria; the picture is defined as «under investigation» and in part rests on a personal communication. Among the references there is a title on a British alpaca.
  • Diagnostic procedure: obtain a complete history; acute and convalescent sera from the dam and a uterine swab; keep the placenta and have it examined immediately after parturition, weighed, cleaned with cold water, spread out and examined on all surfaces, with fixed and unfixed samples for histology, histochemistry and culture; send the whole fetus and neonate to the laboratory, or, if the necropsy is done in the field, take the samples listed by the text (among them liver, lung, kidney, adrenal gland, heart, thymus, brain, spleen, small intestine). The camelid placenta is described as similar to the equine one, with the left horn always gravid. The text reports formulas for gestational age from fetal measurements for dromedary, llama and alpaca (table not reproduced).

Mastitis

  • Camels: clinical mastitis is less frequent than in the cow but may increase in dairy farms because of hand milking and teat malformations; subclinical mastitis is reported between 5 % and 70 % depending on the country (six sources, denominators not stated). The most frequent agents are Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus. In camels (species not separated) the percentage of milk samples from California-test-positive quarters that give a positive culture varies from 10 % to 75 %; the correlation between infection and test is defined as «debated».
  • Llama: signs of intramammary infection are reported in up to 57 % of the animals sampled (denominator not stated). A bacterium was isolated from llama milk samples in 21 % of the samples, but without signs of inflammation, with low California test and cell count. Acute clinical mastitis is «rarely diagnosed» in llama and alpaca.
  • Use of antimicrobials: the authors warn that excessive use in subclinical mastitis raises a public health problem because of resistance.

Neonatal losses

In the dromedary raised in traditional systems, mortality before weaning is reported between 10 % and 30 %, with peaks of 60 % in some situations (denominators not stated). In South American camelids neonatal mortality «may reach alarming proportions» (no number). For llama and alpaca infections are a major cause of neonatal death; enterotoxemia from Clostridium perfringens A and C and pneumonia may cause serious outbreaks; the possible agents of cria diarrhea are E. coli, rotavirus, coronavirus, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, coccidia and Salmonella. The risk factors indicated are failure of passive transfer, exposure during transport to breeding farms and high density.

Prevention and biosecurity, as the authors indicate them

Colostrum in adequate quantity and quality within the first 12 hours; replacement with frozen camelid colostrum or goat colostrum for newborns of agalactic dams or with poor colostrum or mastitis; early recognition of failure of transfer with IgG or total proteins; the transport of females with the cria for post-partum breeding is an important risk factor for the cria of South American camelids; quarantine of introduced animals and of at least 3 weeks for those returning from shows; dedicated staff for pregnant females; an emergency plan for abortion, with rapid delivery of placenta and fetus to the laboratory and isolation of females that abort; avoiding contact of pregnant females with dogs for neosporosis; limiting or discouraging visitor contact with at-risk animals (pregnant females and breeding males) and not allowing public access to the herd. The vaccine table lists clostridia, leptospirosis, E. coli and Salmonella (autogenous vaccines), neonatal diarrhea from rotavirus and coronavirus, and camel pox: no efficacy data, and the authors write that no vaccination program is 100 % effective.

Three points where the abstract and the text do not coincide

⚠️ First. The abstract says: «Abortion rates due to infectious diseases vary from 10% to more than 70% in some areas.» In the body of the text this range does not appear. The body reports an abortion incidence of 2-25 % in the dromedary (seven sources), says «low» for llama and alpaca, and reports a fetal loss of 80 % from trypanosomosis as a personal observation of one author. A reader who cites the abstract cites a number that the text does not support.

⚠️ Second. The abstract says that leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and chlamydiosis «have been diagnosed as the major causes of abortion in llamas and alpacas». The body says they are causes «reported in North America», adds that the prevalence of abortion from chlamydiosis has not been thoroughly evaluated, and declares that no study exists on the role of each factor. Among the sources of the sentence there is also, according to the title, a Chilean seroprevalence of Toxoplasma in sheep and alpaca: a seroprevalence is not a diagnosis of abortion.

⚠️ Third. The abstract says that mastitis is rare in South American camelids. In the body the rarity concerns clinical mastitis; intramammary infection is reported in up to 57 % of the llamas sampled. The two things can be reconciled only by reading «rare» as «clinically rare».

What this card writes, accordingly. It cites the body of the text and never the abstract, and declares each time that the number comes from the body.

Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)

«Uterine infections are considered to be the most common cause of reproductive failure in camelidae.» — This is a statement about the state of the literature, supported in the text by nine sources and immediately corrected by the authors themselves with «limited data on the incidence».

«The most important factor in establishment of uterine infection is over-breeding, which should be avoided by proper veterinary evaluation of the female.» — This is a position of the authors, grounded in their clinical experience («in our experience»), not in a comparison between groups.

«It is important to realize that no vaccination program is 100% efficacious in disease prevention.» — It holds for biosecurity in general and not for a specific vaccine.

Implicazioni cliniche

  7. Nessuna dose. Il motivo è nel campo Metodi / Protocollo.

Clinical implications

For the Italian veterinarian following an alpaca or llama operation, and for those who bring them into contexts with the public.

  1. The first measure the review supports is not a drug. Breeding only with a mature follicle on ultrasound (according to the authors 8-12 mm in llama and alpaca) and not on behavioral receptivity reduces the risk of endometrial damage. It is a recommendation of the authors, grounded in physiology and clinical experience, not in the outcome of a comparison.
  2. An abortion, a weak or septic neonate or a premature birth are investigated, with the right material. Keep the placenta, send the whole fetus, take acute and convalescent sera from the dam. The review says the diagnosis is reachable «in most cases» with this path, without giving a percentage.
  3. The treatment of endometritis is not evidence-based in the camelid. The authors say so first. The pregnancy rate reported after treatment (30-60 %) comes from mixed llama and dromedary sources and has no denominator.
  4. Contact with the public. For at-risk animals (pregnant females and breeding males) the authors recommend limiting or discouraging visitor contact; for the herd as a whole, not allowing public access. For a facility that runs animal-assisted interventions this is a biosecurity recommendation that the review writes without a specific source: it should be read as prudence, not as a proven rule.
  5. The zoonotic agents on the list (brucellosis of the dromedary, Q fever, leptospirosis, neosporosis through dogs) are named by the authors also for human health. Which of them circulate in Italian camelid farms this card does not know: the review has no Italian data.
  6. The sections on the dromedary do not transfer to the llama and the alpaca. Endemic brucellosis, trypanosomosis, camel pox and filariosis are problems of camel farms in Africa and the Middle East. For those caring for South American camelids in Italy the practical value of the review lies in the sections on the uterus, on the diagnosis of abortion, on the neonate and on biosecurity.
  7. No dose. The reason is in the Methods / Protocol field.

Limiti

Dichiarati dagli autori. Dichiara però più volte i limiti della letteratura: «limited data on the incidence» di endometrite e metrite; «no studies have been carried out on uterine defense mechanisms in camelidae»; «There is no clinical trial comparing the efficacy of different treatments»; «to date there are no studies on the role that each of these factors play in the incidence of abortion»; «there are no scientific reports regarding their efficacy» per il vaccino ovino; «The risk of transmission of diseases by reproductive technologies has not been thoroughly investigated in camelid».

  • Denominatori quasi sempre assenti.

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 11/10/2026

Limitations

Declared by the authors. The review has no limitations section. It does, however, declare several times the limits of the literature: «limited data on the incidence» of endometritis and metritis; «no studies have been carried out on uterine defense mechanisms in camelidae»; «There is no clinical trial comparing the efficacy of different treatments»; «to date there are no studies on the role that each of these factors play in the incidence of abortion»; «there are no scientific reports regarding their efficacy» for the ovine vaccine; «The risk of transmission of diseases by reproductive technologies has not been thoroughly investigated in camelid».

Added by the editorial team.

  • No declared literature search: the selection of works is not reproducible, and the reader cannot know what was excluded.
  • Mixed species. Almost all the numerical data are from camels, the data on the llama and the alpaca are few, and a part of the sentences puts together camelids of the two worlds. The reader with alpacas or llamas must look for the species line by line.
  • Sources of differing quality: at least 26 references out of 151 are conference proceedings, theses, anonymous reports or working documents; six data rest on clinical or personal observations of the authors; 22 references are by authors of the review itself (self-citation).
  • Denominators almost always absent. In the review's numbers (calving rate, abortion, mastitis, mortality, seroprevalence) the denominator almost never appears; the exception is the ratio of Neospora-positive fetuses (3 out of 15).
  • The abstract does not coincide with the text in three points (see Main results).
  • Twenty years of distance. The review is from 2006; it was not searched, and it is therefore not excluded, whether the picture of BVD, neosporosis, chlamydiosis and endometrial biopsy has changed.
  • The treatment part is largely extrapolated from the cow and the horse, by the authors' own admission.

Funding: not declared in the text. The only acknowledgment concerns technical help; the funder field of the Crossref record is empty and the funding list of Europe PMC is null (verified on 11/10/2026).

Conflicts of interest: not declared in the text (no declaration found in the deposited text).

What is missing relative to the reporting standard (SANRA). Entirely missing: the description of the literature search (item 3); a formulation of concrete questions beyond the general aim (item 2, partial); the presentation of outcome data with denominators (item 6, partial); a systematic treatment of opposing positions (item 5, partial). Outside SANRA but within the series' rules: funding and conflicts not declared, no limitations section.

◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 11/10/2026

A review from 2006 that admits to knowing little, and that at the head of the text says it knows more.

This card starts from an uncomfortable observation: the review is much cited, and almost everyone cites it through its abstract. The abstract says things that the text does not say. An abortion range of «10 % to more than 70 %» that does not exist in the body; three diseases presented as «major causes» of abortion in the llama and the alpaca, when the text says they were «reported» and that no one has measured how much they weigh; a «rare» mastitis that in the text is rare only if clinical. We do not say that the authors erred: in the body they write with caution, and repeat in almost every section that the data are missing. We say that whoever reads only the abstract receives a review more sure of itself than the one the authors wrote.

The value of this article, for us, is precisely the list of things not proven. No clinical trial on endometritis. No study on the defense mechanisms of the uterus. No efficacy data on the ovine vaccine against chlamydiosis, used on alpaca farms. No study on the incidence of abortion for each agent. A series like ours, which files one article at a time, needs to know where cards cannot yet be written, and this review says it better than any single study.

For an association that brings alpacas among fragile people, two sentences of the review weigh more than the rest. The first is the invitation not to allow public access to the herd and to limit contact with pregnant females and breeding males. The second is the list of agents that pass between humans and animals: none of these data are Italian, and the review does not help in knowing which concern us. On one point the series already has an Italian number (card I-03, which according to the title recorded in the table of issue I concerns the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma in South American camelids in Italy); on all the others it does not. Among the 151 references the only one with an Italian title is a 1981 work on granulomatous metritis of the dromedary, published in a Swiss journal: we have not read it, we cite it to say where to look.

A comparison with card C-07. The review lists, for cria diarrhea, E. coli, rotavirus, coronavirus, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, coccidia and Salmonella as «possible» agents. The clinical review of Whitehead 2009 (C-07), written three years later by an author who is cited here (Whitehead and Anderson, then «in press»), gives those names the percentages that are missing here, and scales some of them down: reading the two cards together is the right way to use them.

A sentence for those who want to use it in the clinic. The gesture supported longest in the whole review is the same from beginning to end: do not breed a female that does not have a mature follicle. It requires no drug, no dose, no proof. If the review serves to bring one more ultrasound machine into a farm, it has been useful, even though it has no data.

Star rating

SANRA compiled by the editorial team — 6/12.

SANRA itemScoreRationale
1 · Importance2/2Justified at the opening with numbers: calving under 40 % in nomadic camels, fertility of 50 % in the alpaca and 45.9 % in the llama, embryonic mortality of 50-57.8 % in the alpaca.
2 · Aims and questions1/2Aim declared but generic: to review epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention of the diseases that cause reproductive loss. No defined question.
3 · Description of the literature search0/2Entirely absent. No database, no string, no criteria.
4 · Referencing1/2151 references, but at least 26 are proceedings, theses or anonymous reports, six data rest on clinical or personal observation and several sentences (the doses) carry no source; the abstract's range is not found in the body.
5 · Scientific reasoning1/2Consistently declares the gaps in the literature and often separates camels from South American camelids, but mixes species in several sentences and carries in the abstract conclusions stronger than the body.
6 · Presentation of outcome data1/2The numbers are there and almost always carry the species; the denominator is almost always missing.

SANRA → stars conversion according to chapter 14 §11: 6-8 → ★★★☆☆.

AxisScoreRationale
A · Scientific quality★★★☆☆SANRA 6/12, with the zero on the item that guarantees reproducibility (the literature search) and an abstract that exceeds the body. Ceiling declared in chapter 14 §11: a narrative review does not reach five stars on this axis.
B · Clinical utility★★★☆☆Offers replicable procedures described in detail (cytology, biopsy, examination of the placenta, sending of the fetus, plan for abortion, biosecurity measures), to be used with the caution imposed by the level of evidence. It does not reach four because the therapeutic part is extrapolated from other species and no dose was reported by the card; within the constraint B ≤ A + 2.
C · Educational value★★★★☆Review ordered by system and by reproductive event, useful as an index of what is known and what is not known. It does not reach five because the quality of the sources is uneven and because the abstract, which is the most read part, teaches less well than the text.
D · Species relevance★★★☆☆It concerns camelids, but largely camels and African and Middle Eastern contexts; the data on llama and alpaca are North American and few. For those caring for South American camelids in Italy the transferability is moderate, and only for some sections.

No overall score, by construction.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that a narrative review from 2006, on camelids of four species, reports that uterine infection is considered the most common cause of reproductive failure and that the single factor the authors judge most important is repeated, ill-timed breeding in induced-ovulating species; that the text declares the absence of clinical trials on the treatment of endometritis and of studies on the role of the individual agents in abortion; and that for an abortion or a compromised neonate it indicates keeping the placenta and sending the whole fetus to the laboratory.

It cannot be concluded that infectious abortion has in camelids an incidence «from 10 % to more than 70 %», because that range is in the abstract and not in the body; that leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and chlamydiosis are the main causes of abortion in the llama and the alpaca, because the text says only «reported»; that any treatment or dose in the chapter on treatment is proven in the camelid, because the authors themselves rule it out; nor that the data on the dromedary hold for the llama and the alpaca. No data on Italy can be derived from here.

Messaggi da portare a casa

Take-home messages

  1. A narrative review is cited with its subject. Every number in this card is «the authors report»; the primary works were not read.
  2. Cite the body, not the abstract. The abstract's abortion range of «10 % to more than 70 %» is not in the text; the body gives 2-25 % for the dromedary and «low» for llama and alpaca.
  3. The gesture the review supports from beginning to end is: do not breed without a mature follicle. It is a recommendation of the authors grounded in experience, not in the outcome of a comparison.
  4. Abortion: placenta kept, whole fetus to the laboratory, acute and convalescent sera from the dam.
  5. No clinical trial on the treatment of endometritis in camelids. The pregnancy rate of 30-60 % after treatment comes from mixed sources and without denominator.
  6. Brucellosis, trypanosomosis, camel pox and filariosis are problems of camels, not of the European llama and alpaca.
  7. No dose in this card, except a single llama case (11 mg/kg of ampicillin subcutaneously every 24 hours for 7 days).
