Autori

Kohl T. · Wurzinger M. · Gutierrez Reynoso G.A. · Waiblinger S.

Authors

Kohl T. · Wurzinger M. · Gutierrez Reynoso G.A. · Waiblinger S.

Complete list, four authors, in the order of the Crossref record (queried on 01/09/2026). No ORCID in the article record, for any of the four.

⚠️ Affiliations are not reported at author level in the Crossref record (the affiliation field is empty for all four) → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. What can be said without inventing: Wurzinger is affiliated with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), Waiblinger with the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna — she is the same author as in card CRL-D-03 — and Gutierrez Reynoso with the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Lima. This reconstruction comes from the group's literature, not from the article record, and must be checked against the full text.

Why the composition of the group should be read. A welfare ethologist from Vienna and a population geneticist of Andean camelids in Lima: this is the combination that allows shearing to be measured where shearing is actually done, that is, in Peru, on Andean smallholder animals, and not in a European experimental setting. This is the study's strength and, at the same time, its limit of transferability: see the Limitations field.

Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

Corresponding author affiliation

⚠️ Not marked in the accessible records → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The Crossref record does not report this field, and the article is not indexed in PubMed (the search 10.1016/j.smallrumres.2022.106885[DOI] returns zero records on 01/09/2026), so the Europe PMC authorString from which, in other cards, at least the first author's affiliation was derived, does not exist here.

Rivista, anno, volume, fascicolo, pagine, identificatori

  • DOI 10.1016/j.smallrumres.2022.106885
  • PMID: nessuno. Small Ruminant Research non è indicizzata in MEDLINE; l'articolo non è reperibile in PubMed né in Europe PMC.
  • PMCID: nessuno.

PubMed/MEDLINE: no.

Licenza dell'articolo originale: CC BY 4.0 sulla version of record.

Journal, year, volume, issue, pages, identifiers

Small Ruminant Research, 2023, volume 219, article 106885 (article numbering, not page numbering).

⚠️ Two dates, and the card declares both. Crossref reports published-print February 2023 and places the start of the version of record license at 2 January 2023: the early electronic publication precedes the print issue by about one month. The card cites the year 2023, which is the issue year.

  • DOI 10.1016/j.smallrumres.2022.106885
  • PMID: none. Small Ruminant Research is not indexed in MEDLINE; the article cannot be found in PubMed or Europe PMC.
  • PMCID: none.
  • Corresponding author ORCID: not in the article record.
  • Open access of the article: yes. Unpaywall, queried on 03/09/2026: hybrid, published version on the publisher's site, licence CC BY.

⭐ The license is open, access is not, and this is the single most important fact in the whole card. Crossref reports for the version of record the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY) license, active from 2 January 2023: the article is legally reproducible in full. Unpaywall and OpenAlex classify it is_oa: true, status hybrid, and indicate as the sole open location the publisher's site, with no deposited copy in any repository (any_repository_has_fulltext: false). The full text has not been read: automated requests to the publisher's site, tried on 01/09/2026 both with curl and with an actual browser, were rejected with status code 403. The card therefore rests on the abstract and metadata. The case must be stated for what it is: this is not a closed article to complain about, it is an open article that cannot be obtained — anyone with institutional access can download it in ten seconds, and this card should then be reread and expanded with the actual numbers.

Journal status (checked on 01/09/2026): Small Ruminant Research, ISSN 0921-4488 (print), publisher Elsevier BV. DOAJ: no (query doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:0921-4488, zero records). OpenAlex: 7,187 indexed works, source flagged is_oa: false and is_in_doaj: false, source h-index 123. PubMed/MEDLINE: no.

Contextual observation. Small Ruminant Research is the historical venue for small ruminant husbandry, and it is the journal where the literature on South American camelids ends up when it is husbandry-oriented rather than clinical. Its absence from PubMed has a practical consequence for the searcher: a veterinarian who queries only PubMed will not find this study. This is one of the reasons the association maintains a collection rather than a list of search results.

License of the original article: CC BY 4.0 on the version of record. This card may reproduce factual data, quotations and — once the text becomes accessible — also tables and figures, with attribution.

Specie e soggetti

Alpaca (Vicugna pacos), in Perù.

Species and subjects

Alpaca (Vicugna pacos), in Peru.

The study has two parts, with different subjects:

  • Experiment — 58 animals in three groups assigned at random as they were caught: 19 sheared while restrained on the ground on bare flooring (Floor, the current procedure), 20 sheared while restrained on a soft mattress (Mattress), 19 kept standing and not sheared (NoShear), led to the shearing site, held for 3 minutes and released.
  • Observational study — 5 herds, observed before the gathering for shearing and after, upon return to pasture. The number of animals in the five herds is not stated in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

⚠️ In the Mattress group and the Floor group, restraint was the same: a rope fastened to the hind legs and the forelegs held by hand. The only variable between the two groups is what is under the animal. Anyone who reads the title and expects a comparison of restraint methods is reading the wrong card: that is CRL-D-03.

Study type and level of evidence

Experimental study with random allocation to three parallel groups (part 1) plus an observational before-after study under field conditions (part 2).

The NoShear group is a true control: it separates restraint from shearing, which is the question no one had asked about Andean animals before. The observational part, on the other hand, has no comparison group: it measures the same animals before and after, and any difference observed there is confounded with time of day, weather and the sequence of the day's events.

In breve

In brief

Fifty-eight alpacas in Peru, caught one by one and randomly assigned to three conditions. Those who were only restrained without being sheared attempted to flee less often and for less time, defended themselves less with limbs, head and trunk, and fewer of them screamed. Among those sheared, the mattress changed nothing: neither the animal's behaviour, nor — except for minimal differences in the handler's manner — the human's behaviour, nor the duration of restraint or shearing. At pasture, afterward, the animals ate more than before; walking, standing, lying down and ruminating did not change.

Why this study matters

Because it answers the question everyone asks backwards. The current discussion is about «how» to shear, and this study says that the part that weighs is not the one being discussed: simply being caught and restrained for three minutes, without shears, already costs the animal a significant part of the reaction; and the most obvious mitigation anyone would think of — putting something soft underneath — produced no measurable difference.

It is also, together with CRL-D-03, one of only two experimental studies on alpaca shearing, and the only one conducted in South America on Andean smallholder animals.

Obiettivo

Objective

To measure the behavioural stress reactions of alpacas to shearing and the procedures that accompany it: acute, in the experiment; medium-term, in the observational study.

Disegno dello studio

Parte 1, esperimento.

Study design

Part 1, experiment. Animals caught one by one and randomly assigned to Floor, Mattress or NoShear. Vocalisations were recorded live by an observer; struggling, the other behaviours of the animal and the handler's behaviour were analysed from video recording.

Part 2, observation. Observation of basic activities — feeding, walking, standing, lying with and without rumination — in 5 herds, before the gathering and after return to pasture.

Metodi / Protocollo

Methods / Protocol

What the abstract states is reported above. Not verifiable on what this card has read: the ethogram and behaviour definitions, the duration of observation sessions, the number of observers and inter-observer agreement, weather conditions, animal age and sex, handler experience, ethical approval, funding and conflicts of interest. All of this remains [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT], and the card does not assume it.

Risultati principali

Main results

Between the two sheared groups — mattress or floor — animal behaviour did not differ, and in the handler's behaviour only small differences were seen. The duration of restraint and of shearing did not differ between the two.

The non-sheared group behaved differently, and in a single direction: fewer and shorter escape attempts, fewer defensive movements with limbs, head and trunk, and fewer animals screaming.

At pasture, afterward: feeding activity was greater after shearing than before; the other basic activities were not changed.

⚠️ No numerical value is reported in the abstract: not a mean, not a frequency, not a p-value. The card therefore reports directions of effect, as required by the method of chapter 14, and does not write numbers it does not have.

Implicazioni cliniche

Clinical implications

  1. Restraint must be counted as a procedure in its own right. An alpaca caught and restrained for three minutes without being sheared already reacts measurably. Every time it is caught «just for a moment» to check its teeth, for weighing, for a photo, the same currency is being spent.
  2. The mattress is not the solution, and anyone who buys it believing the problem is solved is mistaken — as far as this study measured.
  3. After shearing, food. The increase in feeding activity upon return is the most usable result of the observational part: the authors draw from it the recommendation to ensure sufficient feed after shearing. Put the other way round: gathering animals while fasting and sending them back to already-grazed pasture is a way of making an already costly day worse.
  4. Keep the procedure short. This is the authors' second recommendation, and it coincides with that of CRL-D-03 and with that of the review CRL-D-08: it is not an isolated opinion, it is the point on which this small body of literature converges.

Limiti

Valutazione a stelle

AsseVotoMotivazione

Limitations

  • The context is Andean. Peruvian smallholder animals, sheared with the local current procedure. Transferability to a European herd of twenty animals accustomed to humans is not demonstrated, and it points toward caution: European animals are generally more accustomed to contact — see CRL-D-07 — and might react less.
  • The mattress result is a negative result on groups of 19 and 20. With those numbers, «does not differ» does not mean «there is no difference»: it means a small difference would not have been detected.
  • The observational part has no control. An increase in feeding activity after return to pasture is compatible with the stress of the day and with the simple fact that the animals had been away from food for hours.
  • No physiological measure is stated in the abstract: the study is behavioural. Anyone wanting cortisol and clinical parameters for the same procedure should read CRL-D-03.
  • The card has read the abstract, not the article. See above.

Association commentary

This is the card that made us change our mind about something we used to say. We used to say — as almost everyone does — that the problem with shearing is the way it is done. This work puts a control where no one had put one before, and the control answers: a substantial part of the animal's reaction is already there without shearing. This is not a methodological nuance: it changes what one advises a breeder who asks how to do better.

On the mattress we are cautious in both directions. We will not write that the mattress is useless: nineteen and twenty animals are not enough to say that, and a soft floor prevents injuries that this study did not measure. We say that it does not appear to reduce the behavioural reaction, and that anyone who buys it for that reason is buying on a promise that no one has yet kept.

What we would like to say to whoever organises shearing day is the same thing that is in CRL-D-03 and that here arrives by another road: restraint has a cost, and the bill is paid at every catch. If in one afternoon the animal is caught four times — shearing, nails, vaccine, weighing — it has not undergone four procedures: it has undergone four restraints plus four procedures, and half the price is in the part no one keeps count of.

On access, a note that concerns us as an association. This article is CC BY: anyone can republish it in full. We were unable to download it, because the publisher's site rejects automated requests. An open article that the reader cannot obtain is open only on paper, and we write this here because the reader has the right to know that this card rests on the abstract of a text that would legally be theirs.

A · Scientific quality★★★★☆Random allocation to three parallel groups, with a control that separates restraint from shearing: this is the design this literature was missing. Stated sample sizes (19/20/19), two independent data sources (live observation of vocalisations, video analysis of the rest), and handler behaviour measured alongside animal behaviour — that is, the variable usually treated as if it did not exist. The fifth star is not attainable on what this card has read: ethogram, inter-observer agreement, ethical approval and funding are not verifiable from the abstract.
B · Clinical usefulness★★★★☆Delivers two operational recommendations applicable tomorrow — feed after shearing, short procedure — and one useful refutation: the mattress does not change behaviour. It does not reach five because the second part, the one from which the feed recommendation comes, lacks a control.
C · Educational value★★★★★It is the best example we have of what a control group does. Without the NoShear group this study would have said «alpacas get stressed when you shear them», which is what everyone already believed; with that group it says how much of the stress has nothing to do with shearing. We will use it in training to teach how to read a design, not just a result.
D · Species relevance★★★★★Alpaca, the most universal husbandry procedure of the species, in Peru, where 70-80% of the world's alpacas are. The Andean context is at once the article's strength and its limit, but on the species axis there is nothing to discount: it speaks about our species while it is undergoing the thing done to it every year.

No overall score, by design. A = 4 and C = 5 is the signature of a study that is worth more for how it is made than for how much it measures.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that in alpacas restraint alone, without shearing, already produces a substantial part of the behavioural reaction (fewer escapes, fewer defensive movements, fewer screams in the non-sheared group, on 19 animals per group); that interposing a soft mattress does not change the animal's behaviour nor the duration of restraint and shearing; and that after return to pasture feeding activity increases, while other basic activities do not change.

It cannot be concluded from what this card has read by how much these differences are: the abstract contains not a single numerical value, and the card does not invent one. It cannot be concluded that the mattress is useless: this is a negative result on groups of 19 and 20, and injuries were not measured. The result cannot be transferred to a European herd of animals accustomed to humans without stating that this is being done: the animals in this study are Andean, and accustomedness to contact is itself a variable — see CRL-D-07.

Messaggi da portare a casa

Tre minuti in mano all'uomo, senza tosatura, bastano a far reagire l'animale in modo misurabile.

Take-home messages

  1. Restraint is a procedure, not the prelude to the procedure. Three minutes in human hands, without shearing, are enough to make the animal react measurably.
  2. The mattress did not reduce the behavioural reaction. If used, use it to prevent injuries — which this study did not measure — not to calm the animal.
  3. After shearing, food available. This is the authors' explicit recommendation and comes from the sole change observed at pasture.
  4. Short procedure. Third recommendation converging with CRL-D-03 and CRL-D-08.
  5. Count the catches, not the procedures. Four operations on the same day cost the animal four more restraints than whoever organises the day is counting.
  6. Searching PubMed alone is not enough. This study is not in PubMed. Anyone designing a research review on alpaca welfare starting from a MEDLINE search will not find it, and will conclude that the field is emptier than it actually is.

CRL-D-03 (the same procedure measured with clinical parameters and cortisol, in Vienna, with a comparison of restraint methods: the two cards together cover the behaviour and physiology of shearing, and neither alone is sufficient) · CRL-D-07 (accustomedness to contact and training as variables that modify the reaction to humans: this is why the Andean result does not transfer to Europe without stating so) · CRL-D-08 (the review that gathers this line of research and draws from it the same two operational recommendations: short procedure, feed available).

Card CRL-D-06 · version 1.0 · 01/09/2026 · synthesises a single source, read only in the abstract and metadata. The article is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license, but the publisher's site rejected with status code 403 every automated download attempt made on 01/09/2026: the limitation is one of practical access, not of license, and anyone with institutional access is asked to notify the association so that the card can be reread against the actual numbers. Still to be read in the full text: ethogram and behaviour definitions, inter-observer agreement, number of animals in the five herds, age and sex of subjects, ethical approval, funding and conflicts of interest, and every numerical value. No search has been made, and it is therefore not excluded, that studies on the same procedure with larger sample sizes have appeared since 2023.
