Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Autori

Windschnurer I. · Fischer L. · Yanagida T. · Eibl C. · Franz S. · Waiblinger S.

Authors

Complete list, six authors, in the order of the Crossref record (queried on 01/09/2026). No ORCID in the article record, for any of the six.

⚠️ Affiliations are not reported at author level in the Crossref record (field affiliation empty for all six) → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The group is the one at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna — Waiblinger is also the senior author of CRL-D-03 and CRL-D-06, Franz and Eibl come from the ruminant clinic — with Yanagida, a statistician, who in the list signs off on the factor-analysis piece. This reconstruction comes from the group's literature, not from the article record.

Why the composition matters. In a questionnaire survey the weak link is always scale construction. Here there is a statistician among the authors and the scales were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis before being used: that is the difference between a survey and an instrument.

Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

Context note. Applied Animal Behaviour Science is the journal of applied ethology: it is the venue where the studies on caretaker attitude — for dairy cattle and for pigs — were published, studies that this work carries over to the alpaca for the first time. Publishing here a paper on the alpaca means asking to be judged by the yardstick of that tradition, and that is a choice that reflects well on the authors.

Specie e soggetti

ModelloVariabile dipendenten

Species and subjects

Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) — but the subjects measured are the people, and that must be said up front.

Who answered: German-speaking alpaca keepers (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), in an online survey. The animals' behaviour was not observed by any of the authors: it is reported by their caretakers.

The sample sizes of the four models, which vary because the questionnaire did not require mandatory answers — a choice the authors state was made to avoid reactance in respondents:

1Alpaca reaction to the caretaker approaching142
2Ease of handling when moving and leading144
3Ease of handling for restraint140
4Absence of behavioural problems139

Study type and level of evidence

Cross-sectional online questionnaire survey, with confirmatory factor analysis of the scales and four regression models. No control group, no manipulation, no direct observation.

Level of evidence: associative. Every finding in this sheet is an association between two things reported by the same person at the same time, and the direction of the arrow is not measured. See the Limitations field: it is the most important field in this sheet.

In breve

In brief

A survey among a hundred-and-forty-odd German-speaking alpaca keepers. Those with a more negative general attitude toward their animals report that moving and leading is more difficult (p < 0.05) and that behavioural problems — spitting, kicking, biting, rearing, pushing — are more frequent (p < 0.05). Those who have trained their animals with the TTeam / Camelidynamics method report that moving and leading is easier (p < 0.05). Those who talk more to their alpacas, likewise (p < 0.05).

Why this study matters

Because it is the first work of any kind to relate caretaker attitude to alpaca behaviour — the authors themselves say so — and because training emerges as a strongly significant predictor of ease of handling. In the chain of reasoning this collection builds on welfare, it is the link of prevention: CRL-D-03 and CRL-D-06 measure what a procedure costs; this one says what can be acted on in the months before.

⭐ It is also the source cited by fascicle CRL-O on assisted interventions (KT chapter 22, §6.1), and the reason the association writes that the association between training, attitude and behaviour is observational: the sentence originates here.

Obiettivo

Objective

To investigate, for the first time, the associations between caretakers' attitudes and management practices — frequency of the various types of contact, use of training — and alpaca behaviour in the presence of humans, in a large sample of keepers.

Disegno dello studio

  2. Facilità di gestione in situazioni diverse, su scala a 5 punti.

Study design

An online survey among German-speaking alpaca keepers. On animal behaviour three families of responses were collected:

  1. Reaction to the caretaker approaching, on three options: «most alpacas run away» / «stay still» / «approach».
  2. Ease of handling in different situations, on a 5-point scale.
  3. Behavioural problems: spitting, kicking, biting, rearing, pushing, or more than one of these beyond the normal level, from the respondent's point of view.

On the human side: general attitudes, affective attitudes, behavioural beliefs, frequency of contact. The questions were summarized into factors, and the factors subjected to confirmatory factor analysis to verify that the hypothesized structure held up against the observed data.

Then four regression models, with predictors: eleven attitude factors, four contact- frequency factors, and use of training with the TTeam / Camelidynamics method.

Metodi / Protocollo

Methods / Protocol

⚠️ The choice not to require mandatory answers is stated and justified by the authors: a forced-choice format would have induced reactance in respondents. The consequence is stated by themselves: variable sample sizes across models. It is the kind of methodological honesty that, in a questionnaire, is worth more than a large sample.

Not verifiable from what this sheet has read: the collection period, the recruitment channel, the response rate, the wording of the questions, the goodness-of-fit indices of the factor analysis, the regression coefficients and their confidence intervals, the handling of multiple comparisons, ethical approval, funding and conflicts of interest. All [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Risultati principali

Main results

Associations were found between caretaker attitudes, management practices and animal behaviour. The examples the abstract reports:

AssociationDirectionSignificance reported
More negative general attitude → moving and leadingmore difficultp < 0.05
Training to make handling easier → moving and leadingeasierp < 0.05
Talking more to alpacas → moving and leadingeasierp < 0.05
Negative general attitude → behavioural problemsmore frequentp < 0.05

The authors conclude that the relationships between caretaker attitude and behaviour and animal behaviour resemble those already demonstrated in other species, and that the fact that training emerged as a strongly significant predictor of ease of handling in moving and leading confirms, also in the alpaca, that non-aversive training can improve handleability.

⚠️ The abstract reports the threshold p < 0.05 and not the coefficients. This sheet does not know how large these associations are: not the effect size, not the variance explained, not the confidence intervals. [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]

Implicazioni cliniche

  3. Parlare all'animale non è folclore.

Clinical implications

  1. Ask whether the animal is trained, before scheduling the visit. It is the variable that in this study predicts ease of handling, and it changes what can be done in the clinic and in how much time.
  2. The keeper's attitude is a clinical datum. Not in the sense of judging the person: in the sense that those who describe their animals in negative terms report more difficult animals, and that is operational information for whoever has to enter the pen.
  3. Talking to the animal is not folklore. Among the contact behaviours measured, talking is found associated with easier handling. It costs nothing and is taught in one sentence.
  4. Training is done in the good months, not on shearing day. This sheet provides the foundation for what CRL-D-03 and CRL-D-06 leave to intuition: the lever comes earlier.

Limiti

Valutazione a stelle

AsseVotoMotivazione

Limitations

  • ⛔ The direction of the arrow is not measured, and it is the limitation that governs all the others. That those with a negative attitude have more difficult animals is compatible with three explanations: attitude worsens behaviour; having difficult animals worsens attitude; or both feed on each other. A cross-sectional study does not distinguish them, and this sheet does not choose among the three.
  • ⛔ The person who assesses the animal is the same person whose attitude is measured. Someone with a negative attitude could simply describe more problems, not have more of them. The only way out is direct observation by a third party, which is not present here.
  • The sample self-selected. Whoever answers an online survey about alpacas is, almost by definition, someone who takes an interest in alpacas. The worst situations are not in the sample.
  • Variable sample sizes across models (139-144), a stated consequence of the non-mandatory format.
  • The context is German-speaking, that is, small-scale, central-European hobbyist husbandry. It is not the Andean context of CRL-D-06, and the two results do not add up.
  • No readable coefficient in what this sheet has read: only directions and the threshold.

Association commentary

For us, this is the most useful of the three new studies, and not because it is the strongest — it is not: it is a questionnaire. It is the most useful because it is the only one that speaks to something the reader can act on. Shearing can be done better or worse; cortisol can be measured or not; but the time spent with the animal in the months when nothing is happening is the one variable that lies entirely in the hands of the caretaker, and this is the only article that measures it.

Let us say exactly what it demonstrates, though, because the temptation to say more is strong. It demonstrates that the two things go together. It does not demonstrate that attitude causes behaviour. Anyone who writes «a study has shown that if you treat your alpacas badly they become aggressive» is using this article to say something the article does not say — and the opposite explanation, that those with difficult animals end up thinking badly of them, is just as compatible with these data and just as human.

On training we are a little less cautious, and we explain why. The training result is what the authors call highly significant, and above all it is consistent with a broad literature in other species where non-aversive training has been studied with designs better than a questionnaire. When a weak association in a new species points in the same direction as solid evidence in related species, one can begin to recommend, while stating what one is relying on. We recommend it on that basis.

⚠️ A caution that does not concern this article but that must be said here, because this is where the reader will look for it: more handling is not always better. In young males, over-socialization is the described mechanism of imprinted male syndrome, and in that case more «successful» contact means more risk as an adult. This study does not measure that problem, and using it to justify unlimited contact with a young male would be a mistake. KT chapter 02 covers it at length.

What we would do with this instrument. This work's scales are in German and were validated with confirmatory factor analysis. Translating them and reusing them on Italian keepers is the cheapest research this association could do: no animal touched, no laboratory cost, a questionnaire and a population no one has ever described. We write this here so it stays written.

Star rating

AxisScoreRationale
A · Scientific quality★★★☆☆Firmly in the three-star band, and not out of severity: the design is cross-sectional, outcomes are self-reported by the same person whose exposure is measured, and the sample self-selected. What holds it firmly at three rather than two is the method: confirmatory factor analysis of the scales before use, sample sizes stated model by model, and the limitation of the non-mandatory format stated by the authors rather than hidden. A fourth star would require direct observation of the animals by a third party.
B · Clinical utility★★★★☆The most applicable result in the whole fascicle: non-aversive training as a lever on handleability, with a recommendation that can be given verbally in thirty seconds and applied for months. It does not reach five because it is an association, not an effect measured in an intervention.
C · Educational value★★★★★This is the sheet used to teach the difference between association and cause, and it teaches it on an example where the reverse explanation is just as plausible as the direct one. It counts as double training material: on content and on method.
D · Species relevance★★★★★Alpacas, in central Europe, on keepers like ours. It is the Italian reader's context far more than the Andean context of CRL-D-06, and it is the first work in the species on this question.

No overall score, by design. A = 3 and B = 4 on a questionnaire is unusual, and the reason is that the question is so little explored that even a well-measured association shifts what can be recommended.

Bottom line

It can be concluded that in a sample of 139-144 German-speaking alpaca keepers a more negative general attitude is accompanied by greater difficulty in moving and leading the animals and by more reported behavioural problems (p < 0.05 in both cases); that the use of TTeam / Camelidynamics training is accompanied by easier handling in moving and leading (p < 0.05), a result the authors qualify as strongly significant; and that talking to the animals more often is also accompanied by easier handling (p < 0.05).

It cannot be concluded that the caretaker's attitude causes the animal's behaviour: the design is cross-sectional and the reverse explanation — difficult animals worsening attitude — is equally compatible with these data. It cannot be concluded how large the associations are: the abstract reports p-thresholds, not coefficients. It cannot be excluded that someone with a negative attitude simply reports more problems, given that the assessed and the assessor coincide. The result cannot be extended to Andean husbandry nor to those who do not respond to online surveys.

Messaggi da portare a casa

Take-home messages

  1. Non-aversive training is the lever. In this sample it is the strongest predictor of ease of handling in moving and leading. It is an association, not an experiment — but it is consistent with solid evidence in other species.
  2. Talking to the animals is accompanied by easier handling. It costs nothing, is taught in one sentence, and there is no reason not to do it.
  3. Negative attitude and difficult animals go together. In which order, this study does not say — and anyone who states it does is going beyond the data.
  4. The person who assesses the animal is the person whose attitude is measured. This is the limitation to keep in hand when reading any result from this work.
  5. Asking «is it trained?» before the visit changes the planning of the visit more than almost any other history-taking question.
  6. The same survey, in Italian, has never been done. The scales exist and are validated: it is the least costly research that could be designed on this species in Italy.
