Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes
- AQualità scientifica4/5
- BUtilità clinica3/5
- CValore didattico4/5
- DRilevanza per la specie4/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Six of eight authors in a single Polish faculty, two in a single Lithuanian veterinary academy. This is a review written by two Central-Eastern European groups, and it shows in the text: the reference climate is the continental one, the vitamin D problem is framed for Poland, and the regulatory framework invoked is that of the European Union. For an Italian reader, this is, of the five articles in this issue, the geographically closest one.
Academic Editor declared on the title page: Bernard Faye. We flag this because it is a name the reader will encounter often: he is one of the world's leading specialists on Camelus dromedarius, that is, something else entirely. That the editorial handler of a review on the alpaca is an Old World camelologist is normal — there are few specialists anywhere — but it is also the living reminder of this issue's fourth convention.

OpenAlex: 25.525 lavori indicizzati, rivista interamente open access. Eleven days between receipt and first revision, four from revision to acceptance, forty-one days in total from receipt to publication. This is not an accusation: it is a figure declared by the publisher, and it is MDPI's editorial pace. Anyone assessing the soundness of a review needs to know it, because forty-one days is little time for a thorough peer review of a text with 122 references, and because — as will be seen in the limitations section — at least one reference in this article contains an error that careful reading of the bibliography would have caught.
Journal status (verified 31/08/2026): Animals, electronic ISSN 2076-2615, NLM ID 101635614, publisher MDPI (Basel). PubMed: yes. Specie e soggetti
Specie: alpaca — Vicugna pacos, e solo quella.
Species and subjects
Species: alpaca — Vicugna pacos, and only that. There are no subjects: this card summarizes a review, not an animal study. There is no sample size, no sampling, no control group. The article's ethics statements are, entirely consistently, «Not applicable» for ethics committee approval, informed consent and data availability.
However, something concerning the species cited inside the review must be recorded, and it is a recurring bibliographic trap: at least two of the primary sources discussed call the alpaca Lama pacos — Navarre et al. 2001 on the comparison of shorn versus unshorn alpacas, and Anderson, Grubb and Silveira 1999 on cortisol after short transport. Lama pacos is the old name of the same species, today Vicugna pacos following the recognition of the vicuña as the progenitor (see card CRL-E-04). Anyone searching a database for «Vicugna pacos» alone loses all the literature that predates the nomenclature change.
A second warning on species: the review, although entirely about the alpaca, discusses at several points results obtained on llamas (Lama glama) — for example the work of Windschnurer and colleagues 2020, which studies alpacas and llamas together during handling, and that of Dadak and colleagues 2013 on the effective dose of an anthelmintic in llamas. The review reports them correctly attributed, but whoever summarizes the review must not flatten them onto the alpaca. This card does not.
Tipo di studio e livello di evidenza
Revisione narrativa.
Study type and level of evidence
Narrative review. It is not a systematic review, not a scoping review, not a meta-analysis. Europe PMC states this (review) and the method demonstrates it: there is no registered protocol, no PRISMA flow diagram, no risk-of-bias assessment of the included sources, no structured data extraction.
But it is a narrative review with the literature search described, which in the camelid field is rare enough to be worth stating up front: the authors name the databases, report the search string in full and verbatim, and count the publications at every step of the screening. This is exactly SANRA item 3, and it is the item on which almost all camelid reviews fall short.
Level of evidence: narrative review — never «review» alone (§4.2 of chapter 14 of the KT). The review's statements are not evidence: they are the reading that eight authors give of 122 works they themselves chose, with a declared but non-reproducible criterion (no query date, no language or time limit, no independent second reviewer, no rule for resolving disagreements).
Relevant reporting standard: none. EQUATOR has no reporting guideline for the narrative review; RAMESES concerns meta-narrative reviews, which are something else. SANRA is therefore used, which is a quality scale and not a guideline — six items from 0 to 2, total out of 12 — completed further below. The authors do not declare any standard, which is the norm for the genre and not a reproach.
CRL rule applied to this card, and it should be read before the results. When a card summarizes a narrative review, the review's statements are not cited as evidence: they are cited as «the authors report that…», and where possible the primary study is traced back to and cited in place of the review. In this card the operation was carried out for two points — anthelmintic resistance and restraint during shearing — and for everything else the citation chain remains second-hand and is declared as such, reference by reference.
In breve
In brief
Eight authors from Szczecin and Kaunas have gathered into a single review what is known about alpaca husbandry under European conditions, and have organized it around an explicit regulatory statement: European Union legislation on animal welfare contains general rules, but no specific conditions for the alpaca. From there it descends by chapter — environment, nutrition, human-animal relationship, hierarchy and sexual behaviour, mother-cria bond, congenital defects, shearing and care of nails and teeth, training, transport and exhibitions, environmental enrichment, and finally the chapter that almost no one ever writes: what happens to alpacas when the investment turns out to be a mistake.
The literature search is described step by step: 1,134 initial results from PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus, 748 after duplicate removal, 312 after reading titles and abstracts, 200 after discarding 112 off-topic works; 172 from Google Scholar after removing preprints and theses, reduced to 113 by eliminating 38 for lack of full-text access and 21 for methodological reasons. In total 313 works on the short list, of which 122 selected for the final synthesis. The figures add up at every step, and the article's bibliography does indeed contain 122 entries (verified one by one against the full text deposited in PMC).
The content is a management manual with the sources attached. Quantitative recommendations do exist — at least 2 m² per animal, maximum 15 alpacas per hectare of pasture, fencing of 1.4 m for females and 1.5 m for males, 80-90% of the ration as coarse forage, up to 6 litres of water per day for a lactating female, nail trimming at least three or four times a year — but almost all of them trace back, as will be seen, to a single source, and that source is an article in Polish in a non-indexed professional journal.
«While EU legislation does include general regulations on animal welfare, these still lack specific conditions relating to alpaca welfare» — la legislazione europea sul benessere animale contiene regole generali ma non condizioni specifiche per l'alpaca.
Why this study matters
For three reasons, in increasing order of importance for an Italian veterinarian.
The first is that it exists. There is not, today, another recent, English-language, open-access text that brings together in a single document the environment, nutrition, behaviour, handling, shearing, transport and enrichment of the alpaca with the European context declared at the outset. Anyone who has to prepare a report, a course or an opinion for an ASL starts here and then works back to the primary sources.
The second is the regulatory sentence. «While EU legislation does include general regulations on animal welfare, these still lack specific conditions relating to alpaca welfare» — European legislation on animal welfare contains general rules but no specific conditions for the alpaca. In operational Italian: the South American camelid in Italy has no rule of its own, and what applies is the general framework plus analogy with other species. Whoever writes a specification, a fair regulation or a farm protocol is writing on a page the legislator has not yet filled in.
The third, and the one that convinced us to card this review rather than another, is chapter 13. It is titled The Problem of Unwanted Alpacas and recounts what happened in North America when the alpaca was sold as an investment — «3 in 1» packages with a pregnant female and cria included, falling prices, overproduction, abandoned, undersold or slaughtered animals, and over 170 malnourished alpacas on a single Oregon farm (Jocelyn's Alpaca Ranch) requiring emergency rescue. No Italian husbandry manual tells this part, and it would be the first to read for anyone considering the purchase of a small herd.
Obiettivo
Dichiarato dagli autori nell'abstract: «The aim of this paper is to review current literature to provide a detailed analysis of the factors affecting the physical and mental health of alpacas (Vicugna pacos) with regard to their husbandry method» — passare in rassegna la letteratura corrente per analizzare in dettaglio i fattori che influenzano la salute fisica e mentale dell'alpaca in relazione al modo in cui è allevata.
Objective
Declared by the authors in the abstract: «The aim of this paper is to review current literature to provide a detailed analysis of the factors affecting the physical and mental health of alpacas (Vicugna pacos) with regard to their husbandry method» — to review the current literature to analyse in detail the factors affecting the physical and mental health of the alpaca in relation to how it is kept.
In the introduction the objective is articulated into concrete sub-objectives, and this is why SANRA item 2 scores full marks: human-alpaca relationship with particular attention to early socialization and training methods; social and sexual interactions within the group; mother-cria bond; welfare during shearing, nail trimming and dental correction; effect of environmental enrichment; recognition of behavioural signals as an assessment tool.
Question in PICO form: not applicable. A narrative review has no PICO question, and pretending to reconstruct one for it is the first step toward treating it as if it were a systematic review. This card does not do that.
Disegno dello studio
Study design
Thematic review across eight areas, defined by the authors after the selection of the works: (1) alpaca welfare in the husbandry environment; (2) influence of nutrition; (3) human-alpaca relationships; (4) social and sexual interactions; (5) mother-cria bond; (6) welfare during care procedures; (7) welfare during training; (8) environmental enrichment.
The published text, however, contains fourteen numbered sections, including health and congenital defects, the Five Domains model, transport and exhibitions, and unwanted alpacas: the areas declared in the method and the actual sections of the text do not coincide. This is a minor discrepancy that does not change the substance, but it must be flagged because it is indicative of the genre: in a narrative review the plan of the work settles while being written, and this is exactly what a systematic review cannot do.
Metodi / Protocollo
Banche dati interrogate: PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus.
| Passaggio | Fonte | Numero |
|---|---|---|
| Risultati iniziali | PubMed + Web of Science + Scopus | 1.134 |
| Dopo eliminazione dei duplicati fra banche dati | — | 748 |
| Dopo lettura di titoli e abstract | — | 312 |
| Esclusi perché fuori tema | — | 112 |
| Rimasti da questo canale | — | 200 |
| Google Scholar, dopo scarto di preprint e tesi | — | 172 |
| Esclusi per testo pieno non accessibile | — | 38 |
| Esclusi per ragioni metodologiche | — | 21 |
| Rimasti da questo canale | — | 113 |
| Lista breve complessiva | 200 + 113 | 313 |
Methods / Protocol
Databases queried: PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus.
Search strategy: reported verbatim in the article. Twenty-six key expressions combined with the OR operator — including "alpaca welfare", "Vicugna pacos behaviour", "enrichment for alpacas", "alpaca-human interaction", "alpaca social behaviour", "alpaca stress indicators", "aberrant behaviour in alpacas", "thermoregulation in alpacas", "behavioural indicators of welfare in camelids", "ethological needs of alpacas", "trust", "tameness", "parasite infestations in alpacas", "congenital and genetic defects in alpacas", "limb deformities in alpacas", "transport stress in alpacas", "exhibition stress in alpacas", "veterinary training", "off-label drug use", "biosecurity", "transport management", "quarantine conditions", "health monitoring in alpacas", "animal handling", "stress physiology in alpacas", "alpaca reproduction", "genetic selection in alpacas" — with the qualification that «in some cases, to narrow the results, the queries were combined with the keyword alpaca using the AND operator», and that the syntax was adapted to the options of each database.
⚠️ A chain of OR is not a reproducible search strategy, and it is useful to understand why. Seven of the twenty-six terms — "trust", "tameness", "veterinary training", "biosecurity", "transport management", "quarantine conditions", "animal handling", "off-label drug use" — do not contain the word alpaca or camelid. In a chain joined by OR, each of them alone returns tens of thousands of records across any species and none. The real filter was not the string: it was the authors' judgement on the titles, declared only generically («a review of the titles and abstracts narrowed this total to 312 publications») and not translated into criteria. Anyone repeating the same string today would not obtain the same 122 works, and this is precisely what separates a narrative review from a systematic one.
Selection, with the exact figures declared:
| Step | Source | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Initial results | PubMed + Web of Science + Scopus | 1,134 |
| After removing duplicates across databases | — | 748 |
| After reading titles and abstracts | — | 312 |
| Excluded as off-topic | — | 112 |
| Remaining from this channel | — | 200 |
| Google Scholar, after discarding preprints and theses | — | 172 |
| Excluded for inaccessible full text | — | 38 |
| Excluded for methodological reasons | — | 21 |
| Remaining from this channel | — | 113 |
| Overall short list | 200 + 113 | 313 |
| Selected for the final synthesis | — | 122 |
The figures add up at every line (312 − 112 = 200; 172 − 38 − 21 = 113; 200 + 113 = 313), and this is more than can be said of many reviews. However, the criterion by which 313 was narrowed to 122 is not declared: it is the decisive step, and it is the only one lacking a rule.
Declared inclusion criteria (three, reported verbatim in the article): relevance to alpaca welfare or aspects of its husbandry — behaviour, nutrition, social interaction, relationship with humans, care, training, enrichment; nature of the work — original studies, reviews and book chapters «presenting reliable data on the topic»; accessibility of the full text, to allow analysis of method and results.
What is missing from the method, and matters: the date of the query (never stated: the only reconstructible date is 21 October 2025, which appears as the access date of three online references); any time or language limit; the number of reviewers who read titles and abstracts and how they resolved disagreements; any quality assessment of the 122 included works; a registered protocol.
Risultati principali
A · Le raccomandazioni quantitative sull'ambiente e sull'alimentazione

Part II. Breeding and nutrition».
Studio primario: Bravo P.W., Garnica J., Aviles E., «Cortisol concentrations in the perinatal and weaning periods of alpacas», Animal Reproduction Science 2001;67:125-129, DOI 10.1016/S0378-4320(01)00112-9 (riferimento [9]).
Cortisolo dopo trasporto breve. Studio primario: Anderson D.E., Grubb T., Silveira F., «The effect of short duration transportation on serum cortisol response in alpacas (Lama pacos)», The Veterinary Journal 1999;157:189-191, DOI 10.1053/tvjl.1998.0270 (riferimento [114]).
Studio primario: Biffin T.E., Hopkins D.L., Bush R.D., Hall E., Smith M.A., «The effects of season and post-transport rest on alpaca (Vicugna pacos) meat quality», Meat Science 2020;159:107935, DOI 10.1016/j.meatsci.2019.107935 (riferimento [113]).
Fonte: Ríos M., Schlundt F., Bryant F., «Behaviour of alpacas under four grazing intensities in the Southern Highlands of Peru», in Research on Pastures and Forages, Texas Tech University, 1984, pp. 36-54 (riferimento [43]).
Studio primario: Pollard J.C., Littlejohn R.P., Moore G.H., «Seasonal and other factors affecting the sexual behaviour of alpacas», Animal Reproduction Science 1995;37:349-356, DOI 10.1016/0378-4320(94)01339-N (riferimento [57]).
Studio primario: Pollard J.C., Littlejohn R.P. (riferimento [26]). Nessun valore numerico è riportato — [DA VERIFICARE SUL TESTO PIENO].
C · Il capitolo sanitario: parassiti, dosi copiate e resistenza
- questionario telematico a 97 allevamenti australiani di alpaca, tasso di risposta 94% (91/97);
- 20 di quei 97 allevamenti selezionati per misurare l'efficacia di otto antielmintici e loro combinazioni con il test di riduzione della conta delle uova fecali (FECRT);
- il 63% dei rispondenti considerava i vermi un problema sanitario importante, ma l'89% usava antielmintici;
- i farmaci erano «tipicamente somministrati alla dose raccomandata per la pecora» — è l'affermazione primaria che la rassegna riassume;
Main results
A narrative review does not have «results» in the sense a primary study has. It has statements with a source attached, and this section reports them as such: the subject is always explicit — the authors report, the authors recommend — and every figure carries its unit, its species and, where it exists, its primary source.

⚠️ The row to watch is none of the ten: it is the right-hand column. Seven of ten values rest on reference [18], which is: Krajewska-Wędzina M., Najbar J., Turcewicz P., Raczyńska A. «Alpacas — a new breeding species in Poland. Part II. Breeding and nutrition». Życie Weterynaryjne 2020;95:756-761 — a Polish professional journal, without DOI, not indexed in MEDLINE, in Polish. It is not a wrong work and it is not a discredited work: it is a category popular-science article, and it is the source from which, through this English-language open-access review, those figures will enter husbandry manuals across half of Europe. This card reports them because it is useful to have them, and labels them because it is necessary to know where they come from.
B · Data that come from primary studies and have a design behind them
Restraint during shearing. The authors report that, measuring clinical parameters and salivary cortisol, alpacas tolerate immobilization standing better than lying down, both on a mattress and on a shearing table; and that the same difference does not appear in faecal cortisol metabolites. Primary study: Wittek T., Salaberger T., Palme R., Becker S., Hajek F., Lambacher B., Waiblinger S., Veterinary Record 2017 (reference [13] of the review). A second work from the same group — Waiblinger S., Hajek F., Lambacher B., Wittek T., Applied Animal Behaviour Science 2020;223:104918, reference [14] — reports that animals shorn standing scream less often and that vocalizations stop when the shearing machine is switched off, which suggests that the stress is linked to the machine noise and to immobilization rather than to the cutting. Sample sizes, group breakdown and cortisol values are not reported in the review — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT of the two primary studies]: this is the kind of data this card does not copy second-hand.
Cortisol at weaning. The authors report that the cria's cortisol increases after weaning, rises over the first three days and returns to baseline values by the fifth. Primary study: Bravo P.W., Garnica J., Aviles E., «Cortisol concentrations in the perinatal and weaning periods of alpacas», Animal Reproduction Science 2001;67:125-129, DOI 10.1016/S0378-4320(01)00112-9 (reference [9]). The review reports neither the sample size nor the values in ng/mL — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
Cortisol after short transport. The authors report that a 30-minute transport causes a transient increase in cortisol without significant changes in heart rate or in observed behaviour, and that after four hours of rest cortisol returns to baseline. Primary study: Anderson D.E., Grubb T., Silveira F., «The effect of short duration transportation on serum cortisol response in alpacas (Lama pacos)», The Veterinary Journal 1999;157:189-191, DOI 10.1053/tvjl.1998.0270 (reference [114]). Sample size not reported in the review — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
Four-hour transport and muscle metabolism. The authors report that a transport of up to four hours alters physiological indicators such as muscle glycogen and muscle metabolism, and — a counterintuitive and therefore interesting finding — that seven days of rest after transport did not increase glycogen reserves nor change the final muscle pH. Primary study: Biffin T.E., Hopkins D.L., Bush R.D., Hall E., Smith M.A., «The effects of season and post-transport rest on alpaca (Vicugna pacos) meat quality», Meat Science 2020;159:107935, DOI 10.1016/j.meatsci.2019.107935 (reference [113]). This is a meat quality study, conducted in a context — the alpaca destined for slaughter — that in Europe is not our own: it should be read with this in mind.
Grazing behaviour. The authors report that high-altitude alpacas spend 78% of their time grazing, 7% walking, 4% ruminating and resting and 11% in other activities (drinking, sand baths, defecating). Source: Ríos M., Schlundt F., Bryant F., «Behaviour of alpacas under four grazing intensities in the Southern Highlands of Peru», in Research on Pastures and Forages, Texas Tech University, 1984, pp. 36-54 (reference [43]). It is a 1984 conference-proceedings chapter, on alpacas of the Peruvian highlands, with no sample size reported in the review — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The time budget of an alpaca in a meadow in Piedmont is not that of an alpaca at 4,000 metres, and the review does not say so.
Sexual behaviour and season. The authors report that females show more avoidance and defensive behaviours (kicking, spitting, threatening) in spring than in autumn, that in spring the phase preceding mating is longer while mating itself lasts on average 14.1 minutes against 18.5 minutes in autumn, and that first-season breeding females flee and kick more often but spit and threaten less. Primary study: Pollard J.C., Littlejohn R.P., Moore G.H., «Seasonal and other factors affecting the sexual behaviour of alpacas», Animal Reproduction Science 1995;37:349-356, DOI 10.1016/0378-4320(94)01339-N (reference [57]). The review does not report the number of females nor the dispersion around the two means — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]: two means in minutes without n and without standard deviation do not support a comparison.
Isolation. The authors report that isolating an alpaca from the group in a confined space produces marked signs of stress — increased mobility, intense head movements, reduced appetite, increased heart rate. Primary study: Pollard J.C., Littlejohn R.P. (reference [26]). No numerical value is reported — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
C · The health chapter: parasites, copied doses and resistance
This is the point at which this review says the most important and most uncomfortable thing, and it is the reason why the issue cites it in the opening note on dosages.
The authors report, verbatim, that «one of the most serious problems in treating alpacas concerns the off-label use of chemotherapeutics and inappropriate dosing», and that «it has frequently been observed that dosage recommendations for sheep or cattle are copied for the alpaca», with the consequence of suboptimal doses that favour the selection of resistant strains and the maintenance of high gastrointestinal parasite burdens in alpaca populations.
The review raises the problem and gives no dose at all. Not one. This card, consequently, writes no dosage figure: without dose, route of administration, species and primary source together, the number is not written (§ of this collection's rules). Reference [65] of the review — Dadak A.M., Asanger H., Tichy A., Franz S., «Establishing an efficacious dose rate of monepantel for treating gastrointestinal nematodes in llamas under field conditions», Veterinary Record 2013;172:155, DOI 10.1136/vr.101109 — contains a dose, and it is on llamas (Lama glama), not on alpacas. Whoever needs that number must open that article: this card tells them where it stands, not what it says.
Here the CRL rule requires tracing back to the primary source, and we have done so. The statement on resistance rests on reference [64], which is: Rashid M.H., Vaughan J.L., Stevenson M.A., Campbell A.J.D., Beveridge I., Jabbar A., «Anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes of alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in Australia», Parasites & Vectors 2018;11:388, DOI 10.1186/s13071-018-2949-7, PMID 29973276, PMCID PMC6031175 (metadata copied from Europe PMC on 31/08/2026). From that study's abstract, and not from the review:
- online questionnaire to 97 Australian alpaca farms, response rate 94% (91/97);
- 20 of those 97 farms selected to measure the efficacy of eight anthelmintics and their combinations with the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT);
- 63% of respondents considered worms an important health problem, but 89% used anthelmintics;
- the drugs were «typically administered at the dose recommended for sheep» — this is the primary statement that the review summarizes;
- the most frequently resistant nematodes were found to be Haemonchus spp., followed by Trichostrongylus spp., Camelostrongylus mentulatus and Ostertagia ostertagi.
No dose appears here, and none will. The transferable datum is a different one, and it is a pharmacovigilance fact: no anthelmintics are registered for the alpaca (this is what Rashid and colleagues' abstract says: «no anthelmintics are registered for use in alpacas»), and this turns every treatment into an off-label use, with all the regulatory and liability consequences that the veterinarian in Italy knows well.
D · Health, reproduction and congenital defects — with the caveat that follows
The authors report that, among alpacas, 33-40% of bred females do not produce an offspring, 7-25% of pregnancies result in abortion and 9-12% of young die before six months of age, attributing the picture to a restricted gene pool, absence of mating control and inbreeding (references [70, 71, 72, 73]).
⚠️ These three percentages have, in the review, no denominator, no population and no period. They are ranges drawn from four heterogeneous sources — a 1998 work on the United Kingdom, a 2008 review on llama and alpaca nutrition and reproduction, a book chapter on pregnancy pathologies and a 1988 Peruvian study on cria survival. They cannot be used as an expected rate on an Italian farm, and this card reports them only to show their structure. The denominator and the population: [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT of the four primary sources].
The authors also report that alpaca selection programmes aim almost everywhere at fleece quality — reducing fibre diameter and increasing fleece weight — despite the genetic correlation between the two traits being positive but low, between 0.1 and 0.35. The review does not state on which population, with which model and with which sample size that correlation was estimated — [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. This is exactly the kind of figure this collection would not let pass in a card on a primary study, and it must here be flagged as reported.
Congenital defects are organized in a table by system: choanal atresia, maxillofacial dysgenesis (wry face), juvenile cataract, congenital deafness and blue-eye defect for head and skull; brachygnathia superior or inferior for dentition; arthrogryposis, syndactyly, polydactyly and tarsal bone rotation for the locomotor system; ventricular septal defects for the heart; ovarian or testicular hypoplasia, cryptorchidism, hypospadias, «corkscrew» penis for the reproductive tract; monosomy X, trisomy X, XX/XY chimerism and autosomal translocations among the chromosomal aberrations. The table reports no frequencies: it is a list of entities, not an epidemiological picture, and should be used as a diagnostic reminder and not as a prevalence estimate.
E · What the review says about the relationship with humans, and it is worth a course
The authors report that excessive physical contact with the young alpaca — especially if bottle-fed and with limited contact with the herd in the first weeks — can lead to mis-imprinting and the so-called berserk male syndrome (also called aberrant behaviour syndrome), which typically manifests between one and three years of age with aggressive or sexual behaviours directed at humans, and which in males can go so far as to require euthanasia. They also report, and this is the part almost everyone forgets, that the phenomenon does not concern males only: a mis-imprinted female may refuse the courtship of males of her own species, making reproduction difficult or impossible. Main primary source: Ball S.R., Way K., Schleining J.A., Millman S.T., «Survey-based examination of demographics, potential causes and treatments of aberrant behavior syndrome (berserk male syndrome) in camelids», Animal Industry Report 2015;661:70 (reference [37]) — an institutional report based on a questionnaire, not a controlled study: sample size and response rate are not reported in the review [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
Conversely, the authors report that animals petted regularly and in frequent contact with humans in the early stages of life are more docile and less resistant to handling, while poor tactile contact in later stages is associated with greater handling difficulties (reference [12]: Miranda-de la Lama G.C., Villarroel M., «Behavioural biology of South American domestic camelids: an overview from a welfare perspective», Small Ruminant Research 2023;220:106918, DOI 10.1016/j.smallrumres.2023.106918).
The practical point that emerges is not «to pet or not to pet», but when and how much: the authors recommend controlled and measured contact, with the animal remaining within the herd, and training starting at six months, after the alpaca has grown accustomed to human presence and touch; below six months, excessive contact is indicated as the main risk factor.
Assessment tools reported by the authors, and this is the methodologically most useful part: interaction tests (the animal is free to approach a still person, or the person approaches the still animal), conducted in a confined space and lasting a few minutes; and the escape distance, defined as the minimum distance at which the animal begins to move away from the human, with an escape distance of zero — the animal allows itself to be touched without signs of fear — as the operational definition of a fully domesticated (fully tame) animal.
On measuring stress, finally, the authors report an observation with direct consequences for the design of any study in this species: measuring blood cortisol is counterproductive in the alpaca, because blood sampling is itself stressful enough to distort the result; saliva, milk or hair are preferred, saliva in particular because it contains the biologically active form of stress hormones.
F · Transport, quarantine, exhibitions
The authors report that quarantine for the export of live alpacas lasts from 40 days (Peru → Switzerland) to 90 days (Peru → Australia) and up to nine months in some countries such as the United States and Canada (reference [120], which is Part I of the same Polish popular-science article as reference [18]). They observe that quarantine protects health but that its duration and the isolation it entails have a negative effect on welfare, and that this should be offset with adequate housing and veterinary care.
Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)
The authors conclude that alpaca welfare in Europe depends on an interplay of environmental conditions, nutrition, social relationships and human interaction; that the optimal system in Europe combines pasture and shelter; that shearing should be performed standing to reduce stress and the risk of injury; that environmental enrichment is crucial and that the alpaca should never be isolated; and that systematic behavioural observation is the first-line diagnostic tool for noticing in time that something is wrong.
They add — and this is a policy recommendation, not a result — that farmer training, more research and specific regulation are needed. This card reports it as the authors' opinion, because that is what it is.
Implicazioni pratiche
Practical implications
- The regulatory framework is empty, and this is useful to know before writing an opinion. There is no specific alpaca regulation in European animal welfare legislation. The management recommendations in circulation — including the seven in this card that trace back to reference [18] — are category good practices, not legal requirements, and should be presented as such to a client or an authority.
- A practice can be changed today regarding shearing. Restraint standing is associated with a lower stress response than lying on a mattress or on a table, with the caveat that animals reacting with severe stress are safer lying down, for themselves and for operators. It is the review's only recommendation resting on two concordant primary studies from the same group, with physiological measures.
- On parasites, the message is about method, not dose. Copying the dosage of sheep or cattle onto the alpaca is the practice described as a cause of under-dosing and resistance selection; no anthelmintics are registered for the alpaca. The therapeutic decision requires the relevant primary study and the framework of off-label use — not this card, which deliberately contains no dosage figures.
- Cortisol is measured in saliva, not in blood. If a colleague proposes a stress-assessment protocol in the alpaca based on serial blood sampling, the sampling itself is the main confounding variable.
- Early socialization has a window and a limit. Controlled contact yes, bottle-feeding and domestic cohabitation no; training from six months; and the aberrant behaviour syndrome is not only a male issue.
- The chapter on unwanted alpacas should be read before selling an animal to a beginner. The North American history of «3 in 1» packages, collapsed prices and over 170 malnourished animals on a single Oregon farm is, today, the only published warning in the literature of a risk that in Europe is anything but theoretical.
Limiti
Limiti dichiarati dagli autori: nessuno.
South American Camelids in the United Kingdom: Reproductive Failure, Pregnancy Diagnosis and Neonatal Care. Vet. Rec. 1998;142:214-215. doi:10.1136/vr.142.7.162». Quel DOI, interrogato su Crossref il 31/08/2026, restituisce un articolo diverso: Davis R., Keeble E., Wright A., Morgan K.L., «South American camelids in the United Kingdom: population statistics, mortality rates and causes of death», Veterinary Record, 1998, volume 142, fascicolo 7, pagine 162-166.
- Nessun dato italiano. L'Italia non compare: né consistenze, né normativa nazionale, né studi.
Finanziamento: dichiarato — «This research received no external funding»: nessun finanziamento esterno. Conflitti di interesse: dichiarati assenti — «The authors declare no conflicts of interest». Disponibilità dei dati: «Not applicable».
Limitations
Limitations declared by the authors: none. The article contains no «Limitations» section nor a discussion of the review method's limits. This card does not claim that the authors hid anything: it states that no such section exists in the full text deposited in PMC.
Limitations added by the editorial team:
- The selection of works is not reproducible. The string is published but is a chain of
ORwith seven generic terms; the decisive step — from 313 works on the short list to 122 selected — has no declared criterion; there is no query date, no time or language limit, no second reviewer. This card summarizes the reading of eight authors, not the state of the literature. - No quality assessment of the included sources. Controlled primary studies, book chapters, institutional reports, category popular-science articles and web pages are cited on the same typographic level. The reader who does not open the bibliography has no way to distinguish them.
- The quantitative recommendations rest on a fragile base. Seven of the ten management numerical values in section A trace back to a single Polish article in a non-indexed professional journal without a DOI (ref. [18], and its Part I, ref. [120], for quarantine durations).
- The reproductive percentages lack a denominator and a population, and mix four sources from 1988 to 2014, from two continents.
- One reference is wrong, and it is verifiable. Reference [70] is reported as «Wright A., Davis R., Keeble E., Morgan K.L. South American Camelids in the United Kingdom: Reproductive Failure, Pregnancy Diagnosis and Neonatal Care. Vet. Rec. 1998;142:214-215. doi:10.1136/vr.142.7.162». That DOI, queried on Crossref on 31/08/2026, returns a different article: Davis R., Keeble E., Wright A., Morgan K.L., «South American camelids in the United Kingdom: population statistics, mortality rates and causes of death», Veterinary Record, 1998, volume 142, issue 7, pages 162-166. Different title, different author order, different pages. It is a small and probably clerical error — the two works are contemporaneous and from the same group — but it is the perfect illustration of why this collection never cites second-hand: whoever copied that reference would propagate the error without noticing, and the third copy would be indistinguishable from the original.
- Discrepancy between the eight thematic areas declared in the method and the fourteen sections of the text.
- Non-homogeneous contexts presented together. Data from 1984 high-Andean husbandry, from the Australian meat supply chain, from the North American investment market and from European hobby husbandry coexist in the same chapter without the context change always being flagged. The 78% grazing-time budget is not an expectation for a Po Valley meadow.
- No Italian data. Italy does not appear: neither livestock numbers, nor national regulation, nor studies.
Funding: declared — «This research received no external funding»: no external funding. Conflicts of interest: declared absent — «The authors declare no conflicts of interest». Ethics statements: «Not applicable» for ethics committee and informed consent, consistent with the nature of a review. Data availability: «Not applicable».

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE
Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 31/08/2026
Semplicemente, nessuno apre i riferimenti.
Valutazione a stelle
Vincolo incrociato rispettato (B ≤ A + 2).

| 1 | Importance | 2 | Explicitly and verifiably declared: growing spread of the alpaca in the European Union against a backdrop of absence of specific rules, with a reasoned call for research and training |
| 2 | Aims / questions | 2 | General objective in the abstract and six concrete sub-objectives listed in the introduction (socialization, social and sexual interactions, mother-cria bond, care procedures, enrichment, behavioural signals) |
| 3 | Description of the literature search | 2 | Four databases named, string reported verbatim, boolean operators declared, counts at every step, three inclusion criteria. It is above the genre's average. Date and limits are missing, but the item asks for sources and terms, and both are present |
| 4 | Referencing | 2 | Almost every statement carries a numbered reference; 122 entries, verified as 122 also in the full text. However, one reference out of 122 is wrong (ref. [70], see Limitations) |
| 5 | Scientific reasoning | 1 | The conclusions follow from the arguments presented, but no contrary evidence is discussed, the quality of the sources is not assessed, and quantitative recommendations rest on a single popular-science source |
| 6 | Reporting of outcome data | 1 | Some figures are present (mating durations, reproductive percentages, time budget, stocking rates), but almost always without sample size, dispersion or reference population; many key statements remain qualitative |
| TOTAL | 10 / 12 |
CRL conversion: 10/12 → ★★★★☆ on axis A, which is also the ceiling provided by §11 of chapter 14 for narrative reviews (the fifth star requires a reproducible literature selection, which by definition the narrative review does not have). The SANRA→stars conversion is a CRL convention, not a proposal by SANRA's authors: the raw score is given above, item by item, so that anyone who does not share the conversion still has the data.
◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 31/08/2026
SANRA gives ten out of twelve to a review that, in seven of ten numerical recommendations, cites a popular-science article: it measures how the review is built and reported, not whether what it says is true.
SANRA measures how a review is built and reported, not whether what it says is true. This review is well built for its genre: it states which databases it used, publishes the string, counts the exclusions, lists the inclusion criteria, references almost every sentence. It is more transparent than most camelid reviews, and for that it earns four stars on axis A. And yet, if tomorrow an Italian breeder fences the pasture at 1.40 m because «an article in Animals says so», they are in fact following Życie Weterynaryjne 2020, issue 95, pages 756-761, in Polish, without a DOI. The review does not hide this: it is written in reference [18]. Simply, no one opens the references.
This is the reason our collection has the rule of tracing back to the primary study, and in this card we exercised it twice. On parasites we went to read Rashid and colleagues 2018 (Parasites & Vectors 11:388, PMID 29973276) and found what the review summarized in one line: 97 Australian farms, 91 of 97 responses, twenty farms subjected to the faecal egg count reduction test, eight anthelmintics, and the sentence that matters — «no anthelmintics are registered for use in alpacas». On reference [70] we went and asked Crossref what that DOI was, and we discovered that it is a different article: different title, authors in a different order, different pages. It is not a big deal. It is proof, on a one-to-one scale and on an article published forty days after receipt, that the citation chain breaks silently and that the only way to notice is to open the link.
The thing this card really serves to tell an Italian veterinarian, however, is something else, and it is not technical. The article opens by saying that the European Union has no specific conditions for alpaca welfare. This means that when the phone call comes — the alpaca at the riding school attacking children, the two entire males shut in the same box, the herd of eight head on two thousand square metres of muddy pasture — there is no decree to cite. There is the general framework, there is analogy with other species, and there is the literature. This review is, today, the most convenient document to hand to a client or to attach to a report: not because it is a standard, but because it is the only place where those good practices all sit together, in English, open access, with the sources attached. Our job, as an association, is to remember that «with the sources attached» and «with the sources verified» are two different things.
Three points we would want to remain, if nothing else does. (a) Berserk male syndrome is not only a male issue, and its described cause is artificial feeding with excessive human contact in the first weeks. It is the consequence of an affectionate gesture, and it must be told to whoever buys a cria. (b) Blood cortisol is not used in the alpaca: the sampling distorts the measurement. Saliva, milk, hair. (c) No anthelmintic is registered for the alpaca, and copying the sheep dose is the practice the literature indicates as a cause of resistance. This card writes no doses precisely to avoid entering that chain: the number is read in the article that measured it, on the right species, or it is not read.
What we do not conclude. We do not conclude that 2 m² per head or 15 alpacas per hectare are validated thresholds: they are category recommendations with a single source. We do not conclude that 33-40% of bred females remain empty in Europe: that range has no denominator nor population. We do not conclude that the Italian alpaca spends 78% of its time grazing: that figure comes from a 1984 conference-proceedings chapter on the Peruvian highlands. And we conclude nothing about long transports, pre-slaughter welfare or meat quality, because that context — which is present in the review — is not the European context of the fibre and companion alpaca.
Star rating
Axis Score Rationale A · Scientific quality ★★★★☆ SANRA 10/12 (2-2-2-2-1-1), converted according to the table in §11 of chapter 14. Databases and search string published, counts at every screening step, explicit inclusion criteria, 122 references, funding and conflicts declared. Four stars is the ceiling for a narrative review: the fifth would require a reproducible selection, and here the step from 313 to 122 works has no declared criterion. Items 5 and 6 lose a point: no contrary evidence discussed, no quality assessment of the sources, outcome data almost always without sample size or dispersion. B · Clinical usefulness ★★★☆☆ Offers replicable, described procedures: standing restraint for shearing (backed by two concordant primary studies), interaction test and escape distance as confidence measures, salivary rather than blood cortisol, the six-month window for training, separation criteria for males. To be used with the caution the genre demands: they are recommendations, not results. Cross-constraint respected (B ≤ A + 2). No dose, route or therapeutic protocol is reported by the review, and none appears in this card. C · Educational value ★★★★☆ Course material on at least five fronts: the Five Domains applied to the alpaca with measurable indicators per domain; the aberrant behaviour syndrome as the outcome of a management choice rather than a temperament; escape distance as an operational measure of confidence; the physiological reason why blood cortisol is not used in this species; and — unintentionally but effectively — how a citation chain breaks. Not the fifth star: to be the first-choice reference, the numerical anchors would need primary sources. D · Species relevance ★★★★☆ A review entirely on Vicugna pacos, written by European Union groups, with the European context declared at the outset and discussed for climate, nutrition, vitamin D and regulation: it is, of the five articles in this issue, the most directly transferable to Italy. It does not reach five because it has just been published and not yet taken up by subsequent literature, because its quantitative anchors trace back to a national popular-science source, and because part of the material discussed comes from contexts — high-Andean, the Australian meat supply chain, the North American market — that are not European. No overall score, by design. A = 4 for a review whose numbers we contest seven times out of ten is not an inconsistency: axis A assesses how it is made and reported, and this is made and reported well. The substance of the numbers lies in the sources column, and that is where we discussed it.
Bottom line. It can be concluded that a recent, open-access synthesis exists, with a described literature search (1,134 → 748 → 313 → 122 final sources) on alpaca husbandry and welfare in a European context, which declares the absence of a specific European Union regulation for the species, which recommends standing restraint for shearing on the basis of two primary studies with physiological measures, which indicates salivary cortisol in place of blood cortisol, and which documents the copying of sheep and cattle dosages as a described cause of anthelmintic resistance in a species for which no anthelmintics are registered. It cannot be concluded that its quantitative recommendations are validated thresholds, nor that the reported reproductive percentages and time budgets apply to an Italian herd: these are values reported from second-hand sources, in part popular-science ones, without a denominator and in geographic and production contexts different from ours.
Take-home messages
- The European Union has no specific welfare conditions for the alpaca. This is the article's declared premise, and it is what changes how an opinion is written.
- Shear standing, not lying down, except for animals that react with severe stress: two primary studies from the same group, with clinical parameters, salivary cortisol and heart rate variability. It is the review's best-supported recommendation.
- Blood cortisol is not usable in the alpaca: the sampling itself is the stressor. Saliva, milk or hair are used.
- No anthelmintic is registered for the alpaca, and the practice described in the literature — copying the sheep or cattle dose — is indicated as a cause of under-dosing and resistance (Haemonchus spp. the most frequently resistant, on 20 Australian farms tested with FECRT). No dose appears in this card, by design.
- Seven of the ten numerical management recommendations (2 m²/head, 15 alpacas/ha, fencing 1.4-1.5 m, 80-90% forage, 6 L water per day during lactation) trace back to a single source: a Polish article in a non-indexed professional journal without a DOI. Use them yes, cite them for what they are.
- Berserk male syndrome does not concern males only, appears between one and three years of age and is attributed to artificial feeding with excessive human contact in the first weeks.
- One of the 122 references points to a different article than the one it declares. Verified on Crossref. This is why one never cites second-hand.
