Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes
- AQualità scientifica3/5
- BUtilità clinica2/5
- CValore didattico4/5
- DRilevanza per la specie4/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Autori
Zanolari P. · Bruckner L. · Fricker R. · Kaufmann C. · Mudry M. · Griot C. · Meylan M. (ORCID 0000-0003-0191-5686)
[email protected]
Le affiliazioni degli altri, come registrate in Crossref: Institute of Virology and Immunoprophylaxis, Mittelhäusern (Bruckner, Fricker, Griot — è l'istituto federale svizzero di virologia e immunoprofilassi); Veterinary Practice, Riehen (Kaufmann); Clinic for Ruminants, Vetsuisse-Faculty, Berne (Mudry, Meylan).

Complete list, seven authors, in the order and form of the records (Crossref and Europe PMC agree; both register only the initials of the first names).
Corresponding author's affiliation: Zanolari P., first author, is also the corresponding author — Europe PMC's affiliation field contains his email address, which is how PubMed marks correspondence: Clinic for Ruminants, Vetsuisse-Faculty, University of Berne, Bremgartenstrasse, Berne, Switzerland. The affiliations of the others, as registered in Crossref: Institute of Virology and Immunoprophylaxis, Mittelhäusern (Bruckner, Fricker, Griot — the Swiss federal institute of virology and immunoprophylaxis); Veterinary Practice, Riehen (Kaufmann); Clinic for Ruminants, Vetsuisse-Faculty, Berne (Mudry, Meylan).
Note: the affiliation fields deposited in Crossref are truncated — they read «Bremgartenstrasse ,» and «Sensemattstrasse ,» with no street number and no country. This is a defect of the deposit, not of the article; the full form is reconstructed here by combining the two records and the country, Switzerland, comes from Europe PMC, not from Crossref.
Corresponding author's ORCID: not available. The only ORCID present in the records is Meylan M.'s, 0000-0003-0191-5686, who is the last author → for Zanolari P. [TO BE CHECKED].

Quanto pesa. Crossref registra 7 citazioni, OpenAlex 11 (letti il 31/08/2026). In sedici anni.

Journal status (verified on 31/08/2026): Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, ISSN 0891-6640 (print) and 1939-1676 (electronic); NLM ID 8708660. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: yes — record found for ISSN 0891-6640/1939-1676, with declared APCs. OpenAlex: 8,554 indexed works, is_oa: true, is_in_doaj: true. It is the journal of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine: a natural home for a piece of clinical internal-medicine work.
⚠️ Two caveats about the journal's status, and this is this card's point of method.
First: the journal's status is not the article's status. JVIM is today in DOAJ and is classified by OpenAlex as an open-access journal. The 2010 article is not open: the journal became so afterward. Writing «open-access journal» next to a 2010 article and letting the reader infer that they can read it is a wrong inference that this card refuses to induce.
Second: Crossref registers the publisher as «Oxford University Press (OUP)», and in 2010 it was not. In 2010 JVIM was published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the ACVIM (OpenAlex still registers «Wiley» as the hosting organization, and the OA link it indicates points to
onlinelibrary.wiley.com). Crossref'spublisherfield describes who owns the DOI today, not who published the article at the time. The same Crossref record also lists only one ISSN (1939-1676) while NLM and Europe PMC register two. A metadata field can be true today and false for the article's year, and this is the kind of error that a bibliographic card propagates without noticing.
License of the original article: not an open license. Crossref registers as its only license entry a reference to the standard publishing editorial policy (content-version: vor), not a Creative Commons license; Europe PMC reports an empty license field. This card may reproduce: the factual data and short quoted citations from the structured abstract; no figures, no tables.
How much weight it carries. Crossref registers 7 citations, OpenAlex 11 (read on 31/08/2026). In sixteen years. These are very few for a work that is, to date, the only European field evidence on vaccination of South American camelids against a notifiable disease. The number says something about the field, not about the article.
Specie e soggetti
Species and subjects
42 South American camelids: 25 alpacas and 17 llamas, aged between 1 and 16 years.
The breakdown between the two species is declared, and it is worth noting because in this field it is by no means a given: many works write South American camelids and stop there.
Not declared in the accessible records: sex, reproductive status, weight, number of herds and their location, inclusion criteria, prior vaccination and serological status, and — an important piece of data for a comparison between two vaccines — how many animals received one and how many the other → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
The context is declared and it is what makes this card different from the others: a field trial in Switzerland, during the mass vaccination campaign launched in 2008 in the countries of northern Europe affected by BTV-8 since 2006.
Domanda clinica (PICO)
Clinical question (PICO)
P — in South American camelids (alpacas and llamas) aged 1–16 years, under European field conditions; I — administration of one of two inactivated whole-virus vaccines against BTV-8 registered for domestic ruminants, in two doses 21 days apart; C — no unvaccinated comparison group: the internal term of comparison is time (day 0 versus subsequent days) and, between the two vaccines, one versus the other; O — seroconversion against BTV-8, measured with two independent assays (competitive ELISA and serum neutralization), plus virus detection by RT-PCR and recording of adverse events.
Study type and level of evidence
Prospective field trial of two vaccines, with no unvaccinated control group. PubMed classifies it as Clinical Trial · Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't · Journal Article.
What makes it better than the average of this issue: a sampling schedule pre-set at five time points, two independent serological assays that cross-check each other, and active virus detection by RT-PCR on all samples — which is the control that allows one to say that the antibodies found come from the vaccine and not from an ongoing natural infection.
What it lacks: an unvaccinated group, a described allocation between the two vaccines, and any numbers beyond proportions.
Level of evidence: uncontrolled prospective clinical study on a surrogate outcome. Consequence for the reader: it establishes that two doses three weeks apart induce seroconversion in South American camelids with two inactivated vaccines registered in Europe, and that the treatment was well tolerated; it does not establish that those animals were protected against the disease, because no one was exposed to the virus and because the protective titer is not known in this species any more than it was for West Nile in card G-03.
Relevant reporting standard: REFLECT, with the same caveat as card G-03 — the study is not randomized, so the checklist applies as a declared adaptation. Bluetongue is a matter of animal health and of production animals, so REFLECT is here more naturally in scope than in the previous card. Declared by the authors: not verifiable → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]; it should be noted that REFLECT dates from 2010, the same year as this article, and was not reasonably available to whoever wrote it.
In breve
In brief
BTV-8 arrives in northern Europe in 2006 and in 2008 the mass vaccination of domestic ruminants begins. South American camelids, in Europe, are a silent flock: susceptible to the virus, present in growing numbers, and without a vaccine registered for them. As with West Nile in card G-03, one from another species is used, off-label.
This group — the Berne ruminant clinic and the federal institute of virology — takes 42 animals, vaccinates them twice, 21 days apart, with two different products registered for ruminants, observes them and samples them five times over five months. All vaccinated animals developed antibodies after the second administration. No adverse effects except moderate local swellings resolved within twenty-one days and a slight temperature rise in the first two days. The virus was never found in any sample.
Why this study matters
Because it is the only one of the five articles in this issue conducted in Europe, with products registered in Europe, on both species kept by the Italian reader, in a climatic and management context comparable to their own.
And because its result runs in the opposite direction to that of card G-03, which is the true lesson of this issue: for West Nile, the two-dose equine regimen is not enough for the camelid; for bluetongue, the two-dose ruminant regimen is enough. Whoever generalizes — «the camelid responds poorly», or «treat it like a ruminant» — is wrong in one of the two cases. The protocol must be verified disease by disease and product by product.
And finally because bluetongue is in Italy, is a notifiable disease, and whoever keeps camelids in a zone under vaccination faces exactly the question this study addressed sixteen years ago in Switzerland.
Obiettivo
Objective
Declared by the authors: to evaluate two inactivated vaccines — Bovilis BTV 8 and BTVPUR AlSap8 — for immunogenicity and safety against BTV-8 in South American camelids, in a field trial.
Metodi / Protocollo
Ciò che l'abstract strutturato dichiara:
- due vaccini inattivati a virus intero, nominati: Bovilis BTV 8 e BTVPUR AlSap8;
- due somministrazioni a 21 giorni di distanza;
- osservazione clinica per reazioni avverse locali, sistemiche o entrambe, per tutta la durata della prova;
- prelievi ai giorni 0, 14, 21, 43 e 156 dopo la vaccinazione;
- la dose (volume) e la via di somministrazione → da verificare sul testo pieno. Questa scheda non scrive un numero di dose perché non ne ha uno, e non lo deduce dall'etichetta bovina o ovina dei due prodotti;
- quanti animali per ciascuno dei due vaccini, e come sono stati assegnati → da verificare sul testo pieno. Senza questo, il confronto fra i due prodotti — che è metà del titolo — non è valutabile;
- le soglie di positività dell'ELISA competitiva e della sieroneutralizzazione;
- approvazione etica, consenso dei proprietari, finanziamento, conflitti;
Methods / Protocol
What the structured abstract declares:
- two inactivated whole-virus vaccines, named: Bovilis BTV 8 and BTVPUR AlSap8;
- two administrations 21 days apart;
- clinical observation for local, systemic, or both types of adverse reactions, for the entire duration of the trial;
- sampling on days 0, 14, 21, 43 and 156 after vaccination;
- on each sample: real-time RT-PCR for the presence of BTV; competitive ELISA and serum neutralization test for specific antibodies.
Not declared in the accessible records, and these are the reason why the clinical utility of this card remains at two stars:
- the dose (volume) and route of administration →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. This card does not write a dose number because it does not have one, and does not derive it from the bovine or ovine label of the two products; - how many animals for each of the two vaccines, and how they were allocated →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Without this, the comparison between the two products — which is half the title — cannot be assessed; - the positivity thresholds of the competitive ELISA and of the serum neutralization test;
- ethical approval, owner consent, funding, conflicts;
- the number of herds and their location.
Risultati (dati)
- Sicurezza: nessun effetto avverso «except for moderate local swellings at the injection site, which disappeared within 21 days»; e «slightly increased body temperatures were only observed in the first 2 days after vaccination».
- Virologia: «The BTV was not detected in any of the samples analyzed» — RT-PCR negativa su tutti i campioni analizzati, ai cinque tempi.
Results (data)
What the abstract reports, and nothing more:
- Seroconversion: all vaccinated animals developed antibodies against BTV-8 after the second administration. In numbers with a denominator: 42 of 42 South American camelids (25 of 25 alpacas and 17 of 17 llamas), if the breakdown declared at the outset also holds for the outcome — something the abstract does not explicitly resolve and that this card flags instead of assuming →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]on the breakdown of the outcome by species and by vaccine. - No numerical antibody titer, no means, no standard deviations, no confidence intervals, no positivity thresholds, no p-values →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. - Safety: no adverse effect «except for moderate local swellings at the injection site, which disappeared within 21 days»; and «slightly increased body temperatures were only observed in the first 2 days after vaccination». Neither the number of animals with swelling, nor the temperatures, nor their extent are quantified →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. - Virology: «The BTV was not detected in any of the samples analyzed» — negative RT-PCR on all samples analyzed, at all five time points.
⚠️ The most conspicuous gap in this abstract: day 156. The authors declare that they also drew blood at 156 days after vaccination — that is, just over five months — and do not report what they found there. It is the only piece of duration-of-immunity data that exists in this entire issue for a European disease, and it was collected and not published in the abstract →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Whoever opens the full text of this article should open that table first.
«The administration of the 2 inactivated commercial vaccines was safe and induced seroconversion against BTV-8 in all vaccinated animals. The results of this study suggest that 2 doses injected 3 weeks apart is a suitable vaccination regimen for SAC.»
Authors' interpretation (attributed, not merged with the data)
«The administration of the 2 inactivated commercial vaccines was safe and induced seroconversion against BTV-8 in all vaccinated animals. The results of this study suggest that 2 doses injected 3 weeks apart is a suitable vaccination regimen for SAC.»
Translated and attributed: the authors conclude that administration of the two inactivated commercial vaccines was safe and induced seroconversion in all vaccinated animals; and the authors suggest that two doses three weeks apart are a suitable vaccination regimen for South American camelids.
The word «suitable» belongs to the authors and concerns seroconversion, not protection. The authors do not state that the animals were protected, and this card does not attribute that to them. Unlike card G-03, however, here the sentence that was present in G-03 is missing: the accessible record does not contain an explicit caveat that the protective titer in the camelid is unknown. The difference between the two ways of closing an article is subtle and matters.
Limiti dichiarati dagli autori
Nessuno nell'abstract strutturato.
Limitations declared by the authors
None in the structured abstract. Whether the full text discusses any is not verifiable → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
Limitations added by the editorial team
- No unvaccinated control group. In a field trial conducted during an epizootic and a mass vaccination campaign this choice is understandable and perhaps unavoidable — but it means the increase in antibodies over time has no concurrent term of comparison. The negative RT-PCR on all samples greatly mitigates the objection, because it excludes an ongoing infection, and the authors should be credited for having done it.
- The comparison between the two vaccines, which is half the title, cannot be read: it is not known how many animals per product nor how they were allocated, and no result is disaggregated by vaccine in the abstract.
- The day-156 data is not reported, and it is the duration data (see above).
- «All developed antibodies» is a proportion, not a measurement. Without titers, an animal just above the threshold and one ten times above are the same data point.
- No clinical outcome, no challenge trial. The same holds here as for G-03.
- Sixteen years. The availability and formulation of BTV vaccines in Europe have changed, and the serotypes circulating in Italy today are not necessarily serotype 8. This study concerns serotype 8 and two products from 2008–2010, and whoever extends it to other serotypes or other products is making an extension, not a citation.
Finanziamento

It should be stated, as information and not as an accusation, that three of the seven authors are affiliated with the Institute of Virology and Immunoprophylaxis of Mittelhäusern, which is the Swiss federal institute responsible for veterinary vaccines, and that the trial evaluates two commercial products during a public vaccination campaign.
- numerosità per braccio: quanti animali con Bovilis BTV 8, quanti con BTVPUR AlSap8;
- metodo di assegnazione ai due prodotti;
- dose e via di somministrazione, per entrambi i prodotti;
- descrizione della popolazione: sesso, peso, mandrie, criteri di inclusione, sierologia anteriore;
- soglie di positività delle due prove sierologiche e titoli ottenuti, con dispersione;
- risultati disaggregati per specie e per vaccino;
- il risultato del prelievo a 156 giorni;
- quantificazione degli eventi avversi: quanti animali con gonfiore locale, di quale dimensione, e quale rialzo termico in gradi;

Sette citazioni in sedici anni.
RT-PCR su tutti i campioni, a tutti e cinque i tempi, sempre negativa.
Valutazione a stelle
What is missing relative to the reporting standard
Relative to REFLECT applied as a declared adaptation to a non-randomized field trial, the following are missing from the accessible records:
- numbers per arm: how many animals with Bovilis BTV 8, how many with BTVPUR AlSap8;
- allocation method to the two products;
- dose and route of administration, for both products;
- description of the population: sex, weight, herds, inclusion criteria, prior serology;
- positivity thresholds of the two serological assays and titers obtained, with dispersion;
- results disaggregated by species and by vaccine;
- the result of the 156-day sampling;
- quantification of adverse events: how many animals with local swelling, of what size, and what temperature rise in degrees;
- ethical approval, funding, conflicts of interest.
Many of these items are, in all likelihood, in the full text. This card has not seen them and does not assert them.
◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 31/08/2026
Of the five articles in this issue it is the only one carried out in Europe, with products registered in Europe, on animals kept as a European breeder keeps them.
It is worth pausing on this fact before discussing the content. Of five articles, two are molecular biology, one is from the United States and from 2004, one is Argentine and from 2009. The only one conducted in Europe, with products registered in Europe, on animals kept the way a European breeder keeps them, is four hours by car from Milan and is sixteen years old. The vaccine literature on camelids in Europe is this article. Seven citations in sixteen years. This is not a judgment on the article: it is the measure of the void in which those who care for these animals here work.
The content, stated in one line: for bluetongue, the ruminant schedule works. Two doses twenty-one days apart, forty-two of forty-two animals with antibodies after the second, no reaction beyond a local swelling that goes away in three weeks and a slightly higher temperature in the first two days (by how much, the article does not say: publisher's abstract on Europe PMC).
And the real point is that this line contradicts the previous card. In G-03, the two-dose regimen of the equine label is not enough for the alpaca for West Nile: three are needed. Here, the two-dose regimen of the ruminant label is enough. Whoever looks for the general rule — «the camelid is a slow ruminant», «the camelid needs one extra dose» — finds it disproved by one of the two studies, whichever rule they choose. There is no general rule about the camelid's vaccine response. There is a response for each vaccine, and it must be measured. It is inconvenient, it is true, and this issue exists largely to say so.
What struck us in the design. These authors did something almost no one does in a field trial on a surrogate outcome: they searched for the virus. RT-PCR on all samples, at all five time points, always negative. In the absence of an unvaccinated group it is the control that holds up the entire inference, because it rules out that the antibodies found come from an ongoing natural infection during an epizootic. It is virology craftsmanship, and it deserves recognition — especially because it costs money and makes no headline.
Where we ask for more, and we ask for just one thing. These authors drew blood at one hundred and fifty-six days and did not write in the abstract what they found. In this entire issue, that is the only duration-of-immunity data collected in Europe, and for a breeder the question «how long does it last» comes right after «does it work». We know from card G-05 that in a related species, for another disease, titers had nearly all disappeared by ninety-three days; and chapter 08 of this KT reports another study in which a post-booster seroprevalence of 81.3% had dropped to 15.6% at twelve months in a herd of alpacas. The day-156 number exists, it was measured in Switzerland in 2009, and it is one library away.
Our operational position, for members. In a zone with mandatory or recommended vaccination against BTV-8, this study is the best argument that exists for not stopping at the first dose and for putting the twenty-one-day booster on the calendar — not at thirty days, not «whenever the vet next comes by». But the product, the volume and the route are read on the package insert of the vial in hand and agreed with the veterinarian, because in this card those three data points are not there and we do not invent them. And, as always in this issue, the sentence remains that no one wants to hear: seroconversion is not protection.
A note for whoever compiles cards. This article gave us two metadata traps at once. Crossref states that the publisher is Oxford University Press: in 2010 it was Wiley-Blackwell, and the field describes today. And the journal today is in DOAJ and classified as open, while the 2010 article is closed. These are two different ways for a piece of metadata to say something that is not true for the year that matters to us, and we wrote both into the card instead of smoothing them over.
Star rating
Axis Score Rationale A · Scientific quality ★★★☆☆ Prospective field trial with declared numbers broken down by species (25 alpacas, 17 llamas), declared age range (1–16 years), a sampling schedule pre-set at five time points, two independent serological assays, and — something almost no one does — active virus detection by RT-PCR on all samples, which is the control that holds up the inference in the absence of an unvaccinated group. It does not rise to four because there is no randomization nor a control group, the allocation between the two vaccines is not described, and the accessible record contains no titers, thresholds, statistics, ethical statement, funding, or conflicts. B · Clinical utility ★★☆☆☆ The result is directly relevant to a decision an Italian veterinarian actually makes, with European products and on both species: it is as actionable as anything in this issue gets. It remains at two stars under the same rule applied to card G-03, and for consistency: chapter 14 forbids a score ≥ 3 based on protocols the article does not report in full, and here dose and route of administration are missing, along with the breakdown between the two products. With the full text in hand this score would rise, and this is the card in the issue most deserving of being reopened. C · Educational value ★★★★☆ It teaches, read alongside G-03, the most useful thing this issue has to say: that the schedule must be verified disease by disease, and that one can be wrong in either direction. And it teaches a craft: in a field trial on a surrogate outcome, during an epizootic, one also searches for the virus. It does not reach five because the text itself is short and not instructive: the lesson arises from the comparison between two cards, not from the article alone. D · Species relevance ★★★★☆ South American camelids, in Europe, with vaccines registered in Europe, on both species kept by the Italian reader, with declared age from 1 to 16 years and with the llama/alpaca breakdown resolved. It is the most transferable combination in the entire issue, and remains the most transferable in the available literature on this subject. It does not reach five because the population is not described beyond species and age (herds, sex, management), and because the work concerns a single serotype and two specific products from 2008–2010. No overall score, by design. A = 3 and B = 2 say one thing only: it is the best study we have, and it is held below its real utility by the fact that we cannot read it.
Bottom line
It can be concluded that, in a Swiss field trial on 42 South American camelids (25 alpacas and 17 llamas) aged 1–16 years, two administrations 21 days apart of one of two inactivated vaccines against BTV-8 — Bovilis BTV 8 and BTVPUR AlSap8 — caused specific antibodies to appear in all vaccinated animals after the second dose, measured with competitive ELISA and serum neutralization; that the only effects observed were moderate local swellings resolved within 21 days and a slight temperature rise in the first 2 days; and that BTV was not detected by RT-PCR in any sample. The authors conclude that two doses three weeks apart are a suitable regimen for this species.
It cannot be concluded that the animals were protected: no one was exposed to the virus and the protective titer in the camelid is not known. It cannot be concluded how much they responded: titers, positivity thresholds, dispersion and statistics are not in the accessible records →
[TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. It cannot be said whether the two vaccines are equivalent: it is not known how many animals received one and how many the other, nor how they were allocated, and no result is disaggregated by product. It is not known how long it lasts: the day-156 sampling was done and its outcome is not in the abstract. A dose cannot be written from this card, because volume and route are not reported. And nothing can be extended to other bluetongue serotypes nor to products on the market today: this study concerns serotype 8 and two vaccines from 2008–2010.
Sedici anni, sette citazioni.
Take-home messages
- For BTV-8, two doses twenty-one days apart are enough: 42 of 42 South American camelids seroconverted after the second. The booster is at three weeks, not «further down the line».
- And this is the opposite of card G-03. For West Nile the two-dose regimen is not enough for the camelid; for bluetongue it is. There is no general rule: there is a data point for each vaccine.
- Tolerability was good under field conditions: moderate local swelling resolved within twenty-one days, a slightly raised temperature in the first two days (not quantified in the article's abstract), and nothing else in 42 animals aged 1 to 16 years.
- The authors searched for the virus and did not find it in any sample. This is the control that makes the study credible in the absence of an unvaccinated group.
- We do not know how long it lasts: the day-156 blood was drawn and the result is not in the abstract.
- This is, to date, the only European camelid vaccination study this series has found. Sixteen years, seven citations.
