  • AQualità scientifica3/5
  • BUtilità clinica3/5
  • CValore didattico4/5
  • DRilevanza per la specie3/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

3 · Autori

Duesterdieck-Zellmer K.F. · Van Metre D.C. · Cardenas A. (ORCID 0000-0003-2284-3298) · Cebra C.K.

Affiliazioni come registrate in Crossref: Duesterdieck-Zellmer e Cebra — Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA; Van Metre — Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, USA; Cardenas — School of Biological and Population Health Sciences, College of Public Health and Human Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA.

3 · Authors

Complete list, four authors, in the form and order of the Crossref record works/10.1111/avj.12207:

Duesterdieck-Zellmer K.F. · Van Metre D.C. · Cardenas A. (ORCID 0000-0003-2284-3298) · Cebra C.K.

Two surnames not to be split. «Duesterdieck-Zellmer» is a single compound surname, not two authors nor «Zellmer KF»; Crossref registers it with a typographic hyphen (Duesterdieck‐Zellmer) that some indexes turn into a space. «Van Metre» is a compound surname with a particle, and must be indexed as such. These are exactly the two cases that chapter 14 §3.3 and §9.3 flag as factories of nonexistent authors — the same trap as «Percie du Sert». When in doubt: copy from the record, do not reconstruct.

Affiliations as registered in Crossref: Duesterdieck-Zellmer and Cebra — Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA; Van Metre — Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, USA; Cardenas — School of Biological and Population Health Sciences, College of Public Health and Human Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA.

Cardenas's affiliation — public health and population sciences, not clinical — is consistent with the role of statistician within the group, and is a point in favor of the analysis's quality.

4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

Autore corrispondente: K.F. Duesterdieck-Zellmer — Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA, indirizzo di posta elettronica [email protected], come riportato in coda al campo affiliazione del record Europe PMC.

4 · Corresponding author's affiliation

Corresponding author: K.F. Duesterdieck-Zellmer — Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, USA, e-mail address [email protected], as reported at the end of the affiliation field of the Europe PMC record. The identification of the corresponding author is therefore based on the record, not on the article's correspondence note → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT] for confirmation.

7 · Journal status

Australian Veterinary Journal — checked on 31/08/2026. ISSN 0005-0423 (print) and 1751-0813 (electronic), from Crossref issn-type; NLM ID 0370616; publisher Wiley. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: no — doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:1751-0813 returns total: 0, consistent with a subscription journal. OpenAlex: 21,715 indexed works, is_oa: false, is_in_doaj: false — of the four periodicals in this issue, it is the one with the longest publishing history.

It is the journal of the Australian Veterinary Association, published by Wiley, peer-reviewed. Applying the five questions of chapter 14 §7.1: indexed in PubMed, identifiable publisher, not paid open access, public editorial office, historic print ISSN. No signal of a predatory journal.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo

Copyright editoriale, tutti i diritti riservati.

8 · Article license

Editorial copyright, all rights reserved. Crossref registers as the sole license the Wiley Online Library terms and conditions (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/termsAndConditions#vor), not a Creative Commons license; Europe PMC reports an empty license field and isOpenAccess: N.

This card can therefore reproduce: factual data and short quoted excerpts from the abstract, under the right of quotation. It cannot reproduce figures, tables, or the Kaplan-Meier curve, and it does not reproduce them — after all, it has not seen them. Read and verified on 31/08/2026.

9 · Specie e soggetti

Il titolo e l'abstract dicono soltanto «New World camelids».

9 · Species and subjects

34 New World camelids with acquired urethral obstruction.

  • Reproductive status, which is the only signalment datum published in the abstract: 23 intact males and 11 castrates.
  • Species: the split between llamas and alpacas is not stated in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The title and abstract say only «New World camelids». Chapter 14 §11, note on axis D, requires that the two species not be flattened under a single word: this card does not know whether it is talking about llamas, alpacas, or both, and says so.
  • Age, weight, breed, seasonality, calculus type, urolith composition: not reported in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
  • Context: clinical caseload from 1995-2008; the number of sites is not stated in the abstract, but the authors' affiliations — Oregon State and Colorado State — make it plausible that the collection took place at two university hospitals. Plausible is not documented: [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
  • No control group. No starting denominator: how many male camelids passed through those clinics over thirteen years is not published in the abstract.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

Formulazione redazionale a partire dall'obiettivo dichiarato dagli autori.

L'obiettivo come gli autori lo scrivono: «Document the clinical features, short- and long-term outcomes and prognostic factors in New World camelids with acquired urethral obstruction».

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

Editorial formulation based on the objective stated by the authors.

In a New World camelid with acquired urethral obstruction [P], is surgical treatment [I] compared with medical treatment [C] associated with a greater probability of short-term survival [O]? And which features at presentation — in particular the complete or incomplete character of the obstruction — predict survival in the short and the long term?

The objective as the authors write it: «Document the clinical features, short- and long-term outcomes and prognostic factors in New World camelids with acquired urethral obstruction».

11 · Disegno dello studio

11 · Study design

Retrospective case study — the authors define it as a «retrospective case study» — with survival analysis. No randomization: the choice between medical and surgical treatment was made by the clinician and the owner, at the time, for reasons the abstract does not report.

12 · Livello di evidenza

Studio osservazionale retrospettivo senza controllo — livello basso.

12 · Level of evidence

Uncontrolled retrospective observational study — low level.

Consequence for the reader, and in this article it is particularly binding. The central comparison — 65% short-term survival with surgery versus 57% with medical therapy — is not a comparison between treatments: it is a comparison between two groups of animals that someone chose to treat differently. It is highly probable that the animals directed to surgery were systematically different from those treated medically — in severity, in duration of obstruction, in the owner's economic means. Chapter 14 §5.3 forbids turning this association into a causal link, and the association between surgery and short-term survival is precisely the phrase that will be quoted.

What instead holds up much better is the prognostic value of the findings at presentation, which does not depend on a therapeutic choice: incomplete obstruction and distal penile necrosis are features of the animal on arrival, not decisions of the clinician.

13 · Standard di reporting pertinente

STROBE (studi osservazionali), applicata retroattivamente.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

STROBE (observational studies), applied retroactively. Declared by the authors: not verifiable without the full text → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]; the abstract does not mention it, and in 2014 the declaration was rare.

14 · Metodo

  • test della somma dei ranghi di Wilcoxon per i confronti fra gruppi;
  • regressione logistica esatta — la scelta corretta con numerosità piccole e categorie a frequenza bassa, dove la logistica ordinaria produce stime instabili;

14 · Method

Everything that follows comes from the structured abstract. The actual method is in the full text, and we have not read it.

Selection: clinical data collected from the records of 34 New World camelids presented with acquired urethral obstruction. The period is in the title: 1995-2008. Inclusion and exclusion criteria are not reported in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]; in particular it is not known how «acquired obstruction» was defined, nor how a complete obstruction was distinguished from an incomplete one — which is the study's principal prognostic variable.

Follow-up: follow-up information obtained for discharged patients; available for 14 records.

Analysis, and here the abstract is unusually explicit for a 2014 paper — three named methods, appropriate and different from one another:

  • Wilcoxon rank-sum test for between-group comparisons;
  • exact logistic regression — the correct choice with small numbers and low-frequency categories, where ordinary logistic regression produces unstable estimates;
  • Kaplan-Meier survival curves for the long-term outcome.

The sample size calculation, the number of sites, the handling of missing data and the significance threshold are not reported in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

15 · Risultati (dati)

Popolazione: 34 camelidi del Nuovo Mondo — 23 maschi interi, 11 castrati.

Trattamento ricevuto (le tre categorie sommano esattamente a 34):

NumeroQuota di 34
Eutanasiati alla presentazione412 %
Trattati medicalmente721 %
Trattati chirurgicamente2368 %

L'abstract lo scrive senza attenuazioni: «Necrosis of the distal penis was found in 4 animals and all were short-term non-survivors».

Sopravvivenza a breve termine, come pubblicata:

GruppoSopravvivenza a breve termine
Trattati chirurgicamente (n = 23)65 %
Trattati medicalmente (n = 7)57 %

Sopravvivenza a lungo termine.

  • 6 animali vivi, 8 morti;
  • follow-up mediano 4,5 anni;

15 · Results (data)

Population: 34 New World camelids — 23 intact males, 11 castrates.

Treatment received (the three categories sum exactly to 34):

NumberShare of 34
Euthanized at presentation412%
Treated medically721%
Treated surgically2368%

Surgical procedures employed, listed by the authors: urethrotomy, bladder marsupialization, tube cystostomy alone or combined with urethrotomy, urethrostomy, penile reefing (circumferential resection of preputial skin). How many times each was performed, and with what outcome, is not reported in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. This is the gap that weighs most heavily on this card: six different procedures across twenty-three animals, without the breakdown, allow nothing to be said about which one works.

The finding that alone justifies this card

Necrosis of the distal portion of the penis: 4 of 34 animals — and all 4 non-survivors in the short term. The abstract states it without softening: «Necrosis of the distal penis was found in 4 animals and all were short-term non-survivors».

Four out of four. Zero survivors out of four. It is a tiny number and it must be said: four cases do not yield a probability, and with four observations the confidence interval around a 0% survival still runs to about 50%. But it is an objective finding, detectable on examination, that does not depend on any therapeutic choice — and in a species where the literature is made of anecdotes, a concordant 4 of 4 is the most useful piece of information there is for the conversation with the owner.

Short-term survival, as published:

GroupShort-term survival
Treated surgically (n = 23)65%
Treated medically (n = 7)57%

⚠️ The abstract publishes the percentages and not the counts. With the denominators known, 65% of 23 corresponds to 15 of 23 animals (65.2%) and 57% of 7 to 4 of 7 (57.1%): these are the only whole numbers compatible with the printed percentages. The numerators are therefore reconstructed by us, not read, and are flagged as such → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. There is no P value and no confidence interval for this comparison in the abstract.

The two factors associated with greater probability of short-term survival, according to the authors: incomplete urethral obstruction at admission and surgical treatment. No point estimate, no odds ratio, no confidence interval is reported in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Long-term survival. Records with available follow-up information: 14 — that is, fewer than half of the 34, and fewer than half even of those discharged. Of these 14:

  • 6 animals alive, 8 dead;
  • median follow-up 4.5 years;
  • median survival time 2.5 years.

Recurrence of urethral obstruction was associated with long-term non-survival. How many recurrences occurred, and over what time, is not reported in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

⛔ No dose is written in this card, because the abstract contains none. It is not known which drugs make up the «medical treatment» of the 7 animals: neither analgesics, nor antispasmodics, nor urinary acidifiers, nor fluid therapy → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Anyone presenting this article as the source of a medical protocol for urethral obstruction in the camelid is attributing to it something that, at least in the abstract, is not there.

New World camelids with incomplete urethral obstruction have the best odds of short-term survival and those with recurrence of urethral obstruction have a poor prognosis for long-term survival».

16 · Authors' interpretation

The authors conclude, in a formulation worth reporting in full because it is prudent: «Surgically treated New World camelids with incomplete urethral obstruction have the best odds of short-term survival and those with recurrence of urethral obstruction have a poor prognosis for long-term survival».

It should be noted that the authors write «odds», not «probability of cure», and that they speak of short-term survival — not resolution of the obstruction, not return of function. The rest of the authors' interpretation lies in the Discussion, which we have not read → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations stated by the authors

Not verifiable. The structured abstract does not contain a limitations section, and the limitations stated by the authors — if there are any, and in a paper of this statistical quality it is likely there are — lie in the Discussion → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Chapter 14 §10 requires that a field with no content carry the reason for the absence: the reason is that the article is not open access and the series has not read its full text. Not that the authors failed to state them.

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

18 · Limitations added by the editorial team

  1. The surgery/medical-therapy comparison is not a comparison between treatments, for the reasons given in field 12. And there is more: 4 of 34 animals were euthanized at presentation, that is, before any treatment. If — as is plausible — they were the most severe cases, their exclusion from both arms makes the two survival rates both optimistic relative to the prognosis of a camelid arriving obstructed.
  2. 65% and 57% are very close, and there is no P. Between 15 of 23 and 4 of 7 there is nothing that 34 animals can distinguish. The association between surgery and survival that the authors report comes from the exact logistic regression, not from this crude comparison, and the abstract does not give its estimate. Anyone citing «surgery survives more» on the basis of 65 versus 57 is citing a difference the article did not measure in that form.
  3. Long-term follow-up covers 14 of 34 cases (41%), and loss to follow-up is almost never random. If the families of animals that died early are less traceable — or more traceable — the median survival of 2.5 years is skewed in one direction or the other. With 59% of cases outside the survival analysis, that median should be treated as an indication, not an estimate.
  4. The llama/alpaca breakdown is missing, and it is a real problem for an Italian reader: the Italian camelid population is overwhelmingly alpaca, and a paper on New World camelids whose composition is unknown cannot be transferred without stating so. The axis D grid is explicit on this point.
  5. Six named surgical procedures, no breakdown. This is the gap that makes this card unusable for the surgical decision, which is in fact the real decision. Bladder marsupialization and tube cystostomy have completely different implications for the animal, for the owner and for cost, and nothing in this abstract helps choose between them.
  6. The reproductive-status datum — 23 intact versus 11 castrated — does not say what it seems to say. In Europe there is a widespread belief that early castration predisposes to urethral obstruction through reduced urethral diameter development. This case series has more than twice as many intact males, but it is neither an objection to that belief nor a confirmation of it: the denominator is missing (how many intact males and how many castrates were there in the at-risk population?) and so is the age at castration. Without a denominator, 23 versus 11 measures no risk. Anyone using it in either direction would be making exactly the error that chapter 14 §5.3 forbids — and it is an error we have already heard made out loud.
  7. The article is from 2014 on a case series that closes in 2008. Tube cystostomy techniques and materials have changed; the median follow-up time of 4.5 years carries part of the data back to the 1990s. This does not diminish the value of the prognostic factors at presentation — penile necrosis does not age — but it weighs on any reading of the surgical outcomes.
  8. The biggest limitation of this card is not the article's: it is ours. We have read an abstract. The quality of the named statistical methods and the presence of a statistician among the authors suggest a well-conducted study, and our score on axis A takes this into account — but it is a judgment on what the abstract documents, not on the completeness of the reporting, which we have not been able to examine. Anyone with access to the full text is invited to revisit that score: the grid exists precisely so that a rating can be challenged.

19 · Finanziamento

Dichiarato, e in una forma insolita: «Gift from Mr. Glen Pfefferkorn».

19 · Funding

Stated, and in an unusual form: «Gift from Mr. Glen Pfefferkorn». The datum appears twice and concordantly: in the funder field of Crossref and in the grantsList.grant.agency field of Europe PMC, which registers agency: "Gift from Mr. Glen Pfefferkorn".

This is therefore a private donation from an individual, not public or industry funding. The donor's role in the study cannot be derived from the records → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Chapter 14 §5.4 requires that funding always be written with source and role: here the source is present, the role is not, and the difference is stated. There is nothing suspicious about a donation to a university clinic for a niche species — it is, in fact, how much of camelid research is funded — but it must be written rather than left unsaid.

20 · Conflicts of interest

Not verifiable without the full text → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Neither Crossref nor Europe PMC display a conflicts-of-interest statement for this article, and the abstract contains none. This is not the same as «undeclared»: the Australian Veterinary Journal already required a conflicts declaration in 2014, which is likely at the end of the article, where we have not looked.

21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard

List relative to STROBE, with the caveat that it evaluates the abstract, not the article. STROBE has an item dedicated precisely to this — item 1b: «Provide in the abstract an informative and balanced summary of what was done and what was found» — and it is against that item that this list makes sense.

  • Estimates with their precision (STROBE 16a and 1b). The abstract states two factors «associated» with survival without a single estimate, a single confidence interval, a single P value. This is the most serious gap: the reader knows that something is associated, not how much.
  • The species breakdown (STROBE 6a). Absent, in a paper on two different species.
  • The number of sites and the starting denominator (STROBE 5 and 13a). Absent.
  • The eligibility criteria (STROBE 6a). How «acquired» obstruction was defined, and how «complete» was distinguished from «incomplete» — which is the core prognostic variable — is not stated.
  • The breakdown of the six surgical procedures (STROBE 7 and 14). Absent.
  • Loss to follow-up (STROBE 13c). The number is there (14 of 34), the reason for the loss is not.
  • The composition of «medical treatment» (STROBE 7). Absent: no drug, no dose.
  • No gap found, instead, on: stated objective (STROBE 3), design stated at the outset (1a), study period in the title (5), statistical methods named in full and appropriate to the sample size (12a) — and on this last point the abstract is better than the average of the camelid literature, which usually writes «data were analyzed statistically» and stops there.

22 · Commento redazionale — riquadro dell'associazione

23 · Valutazione a stelle

AsseVotoMotivazione

22 · Editorial comment — association's box

Why this card is in the fascicle despite being the poorest in sourcing.

Because urethral obstruction in the male is, along with heat stroke, the emergency actually seen in Italy — and because 34 cases is the largest case series that exists on this condition in this species. A card based on an abstract is a weak card; but the void it replaces is a night in which someone decides whether to operate based on what they were told.

The two things to bring to the bedside, and there are only two.

The first: look at the penis. In this case series, the 4 animals with distal penile necrosis all 4 died. No probability can be derived from four cases, and this card derives none. But it is a finding seen with hands and eyes, not with an ultrasound, and it immediately shifts the conversation with the owner from «how much does surgery cost» to «is it worth it». When that finding is present, the available literature — all of it — says nobody survived.

The second: the game does not end at discharge. Of 14 animals followed over time, 8 died, with a median survival of 2.5 years against a median follow-up of 4.5 years, and recurrence was associated with death at a distance. This is the information the owner must have before signing for surgery: one is not buying a cure, one is buying time, and that time depends on a recurrence nobody yet knows how to prevent. Which brings us back to this disease's real medicine, which is dietary and managerial, and which this article does not address.

Where we do not follow the article — or rather, where we do not follow whoever will cite it. «Surgical treatment is associated with greater short-term survival» will become, within two retellings, «operating is better». That is not what this study can say. The choice between surgery and medical therapy was not randomized; four animals were euthanized before entering either arm; and between a 65% of 23 and a 57% of 7 there is no difference that 34 animals can measure. What the article solidly supports is that certain animals arrive already with a worse prognosis, and that they can be recognized on examination: complete obstruction, penile necrosis. That is prognosis, and it is useful. The other is a clinical decision on which the article, honestly, does not have the means to rule.

One thing that must be said because we hear it repeated. That 23 of the 34 were intact males neither absolves early castration nor accuses it. The denominator is missing — how many intact males and how many castrates were in the population these 34 came from — and so is the age at castration. A numerator without a denominator measures no risk, and on this sentence the Camelid Research Library does not intend to compromise, not even when the number seems to support what we think. The question «at what age to castrate a male alpaca» remains open, and this article does not close it in either direction.

Where we ask for more, and this time it is a concrete request. It would be worth someone reading the full text and publishing, even just in a one-page table, the breakdown of the six surgical procedures with their outcome. It is already written somewhere, in that article: twenty-three animals, six techniques. It is the information missing for anyone who has to decide at eleven at night, and it sits behind a subscription.

Our operating position, for our members. Facing a male that strains and does not urinate: look at and palpate the extruded penis before everything else; determine whether the obstruction is complete or incomplete, because it is the prognostic variable this study isolates; and tell the owner, with the numbers from this card, that short-term survival is only slightly above half on either path, and that at a distance 8 of 14 followed have died. It is not a nice conversation. It is much better than the conversation held without numbers.

23 · Star rating

AxisScoreRationale
A · Scientific quality★★★☆☆Observational study with stated n (34), stated period, defined primary outcome, long-term follow-up actually collected and three named statistical methods appropriate to the sample size — exact logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier are not the choice of someone who analyzes out of habit, and among the authors is a population statistician. It does not rise to four because there is no randomization nor a constructed comparison group, follow-up covers 14 of 34 cases, and the abstract publishes no estimate with its precision. ⚠️ This score is given on the structured abstract alone: the completeness of the reporting, which is half of axis A, has not been examined. Anyone with the full text is invited to revisit it.
B · Clinical utility★★★☆☆Offers an immediate, replicable procedure — establish at examination whether the obstruction is complete or incomplete, look for distal penile necrosis, and base the prognostic conversation with the owner on these two findings — to be used with the caution the level of evidence demands. It does not rise to four because the breakdown of the six surgical procedures is not published, the «medical treatment» is not described, no dose appears and the association estimates have neither intervals nor P values.
C · Educational value★★★★☆Teaches two things that stay with you forever: that an objective finding at presentation can matter more than a therapeutic choice in predicting outcome, and that survival to discharge and survival at two years are two different questions — 8 deaths of 14 followed, with a median of 2.5 years, say it better than any explanation. It is also the best didactic example in the fascicle of how a numerator without a denominator (23 intact versus 11 castrated) does not measure a risk. It is not five because a complete educational reference on camelid urolithiasis should contain calculus composition, dietary prevention and surgical techniques, and this article has none of these.
D · Species relevance★★★☆☆Study on New World camelids in a common clinical context, with moderate generalizability: 34 animals, a case series closing in 2008, and the llama/alpaca breakdown not stated — which in a country whose camelid population is almost entirely alpaca is a real limitation, not a formal one. The grid (note on axis D) forbids ignoring the distinction between the species: here we cannot even know whether there is something to ignore.

24 · Bottom line

It can be concluded that, in 34 New World camelids with acquired urethral obstruction between 1995 and 2008, 23 were intact males and 11 castrates; that 4 of 34 were euthanized at presentation, 7 treated medically and 23 surgically with six different techniques; that short-term survival was 65% among the 23 treated surgically and 57% among the 7 treated medically; that necrosis of the distal portion of the penis was found in 4 animals and none of the 4 survived in the short term; that, according to the authors, incomplete obstruction at admission and surgical treatment were associated with greater probability of short-term survival; and that, of the 14 records with long-term follow-up, 6 animals were alive and 8 dead, with median follow-up 4.5 years and median survival 2.5 years, and with recurrence of the obstruction associated with long-term non-survival.

It cannot be concluded that surgery causes survival: the choice of treatment was not randomized, the 4 animals euthanized at presentation are outside both groups, and between 65% of 23 and 57% of 7 there is no difference this sample size can measure. Neither prognostic association can be quantified: the abstract publishes neither odds ratio, nor confidence intervals, nor P values → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. No indication can be derived as to which surgical technique to choose: six procedures are named, their breakdown and their separate outcomes are not published in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. No medical protocol and no dose can be derived: the «medical treatment» of the 7 animals is not described. Nothing can be concluded about early castration as a risk factor: 23 intact versus 11 castrated is a numerator without a denominator, and the age at castration is not reported. It cannot be known whether these results concern llamas, alpacas, or both: the species breakdown is not stated → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. And the completeness of this article's reporting cannot be judged, because the Camelid Research Library has read only its abstract.

27 · Card date and version

Card CRL-H-05 · version 1.0 · 31/08/2026 · synthesizes a single source, not a body of literature, and has read only its structured abstract: the article is not deposited in PubMed Central and is not freely accessible. It has not been searched, and therefore it is not excluded, whether case series subsequent to 2014 on urethral obstruction in camelids, studies on urolith composition and on dietary prevention in the species, or European papers on the same condition exist. This card should be reopened by whoever has access to the full text: fields 17, 20, the number of sites, the species breakdown, the breakdown of the surgical procedures and the estimates with their precision are all recoverable, and the score on axis A should be revised accordingly. The bibliographic metadata are copied from the responses of Crossref (works/10.1111/avj.12207), Europe PMC (resultType=core) and PubMed (esummary.fcgi), queried on 31/08/2026.

Fascicle tail — what this group of five cards does not cover

Chapter 15 of KT Camelidi lists fourteen emergency subjects. This fascicle touches five of them. The rest remain uncovered, and are declared here so that no one believes them addressed: fluid therapy with its volumes and routes; hypothermia and neonatal resuscitation with colostrum and glucose; the acute abdomen and colic, including third-compartment ulcers; uterine, vaginal and rectal prolapse; trauma and dog attacks; emergency airway procedures and thoracentesis; euthanasia. Verified camelid literature exists on each of these in chapter 15 §17, and each is worth a card.

Two genuine gaps in the literature, which no future card will be able to fill until the study exists. The first: no validated sepsis score exists for the neonatal camelid — card H-01 documents the attempt to use human criteria and its predictive failure, and the authors themselves hope someone will build the right score. The second: no European study on heat stroke in camelids exists, on a continent where the summers card H-03 describes are now ours.
