Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE
Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 31/08/2026
Association's commentary
◆ ASSOCIATION'S COMMENTARY
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial staff · 31/08/2026
This is the first Italian nationwide data: until now, to know how much Toxoplasma circulated in camelids farmed in Italy, foreign figures had to be borrowed. Until this work, anyone wanting to know how much Toxoplasma circulated in camelids farmed in Italy had to borrow Swiss, German or Andean figures and hope. Now there is an Italian figure: 161 out of 486 alpacas, that is one in three, have antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii.
What «one in three» means, and what it does not mean. It means that a third of the sampled Italian alpacas has encountered the parasite, at some point in life, and that this parasite is present on the farm. It does not mean that the alpaca is sick, it does not mean it will abort, and it does not mean it is a source of contagion for the visitor. Toxoplasmosis is not caught by petting an alpaca: it is caught by ingesting oocysts shed by the cat, or undercooked infected tissue. The alpaca's seropositivity is an environmental indicator — it says that in that pasture there are oocysts — and it should be used as such: not to alarm those who pet, but to look at the farm's cats and at the places where feed is stored.
The figure to handle with tongs is that of the llamas. «75 % of llamas are seropositive» sounds like news; it is 15 llamas out of 20. The editorial staff calculated the interval that the abstract does not give — editorial calculation, Wilson method, z = 1.96, not a result of the authors — and it runs from 53.1 % to 88.8 %. That is: on the basis of this data, the true frequency in Italian llamas may be little more than one in two or almost nine in ten. The direction of the association — llamas more exposed than alpacas — is declared significant by the authors and is not disputed here; it is the magnitude that is not yet a usable number. Before writing into a farm protocol that llamas should be managed differently from alpacas, read the full text.
The line the association considers more important than all the percentages is the last of the abstract: «further studies are needed to evaluate the role of these parasites as cause of abortion». It is a statement of ignorance, and it is precious: it clears the field of a chain of deductions that forms on its own in anyone's head — Toxoplasma causes abortion in sheep → a third of alpacas are seropositive → abortions in alpacas are caused by Toxoplasma. The second step is measured, the third is not. And the third will never be measured until the aborted fetuses reach the laboratory, which is a problem of logistics and habits, not of science.
A methodological comparison worth making, internal to this issue. Two Italian studies, both from 2025, both with a questionnaire to owners: this one (I-03) administers it online, card CRL-I-04 administers it on site, in person, in Italian, by the first author, and obtains 12 out of 12 responses with no missing data, also declaring the checklist it followed (CROSS). This is not a reproach to I-03, which has 506 animals against 125 and could not do it in person. It is an observation useful to whoever designs the next Italian survey: an on-farm questionnaire costs time and returns data that the online one does not return, starting with the response rate.
What changes for a veterinarian in Italy, today. (a) Gloves when handling placenta and parturition material, and the rule applies first to pregnant women and to immunocompromised people present on the farm. Neither measure is new; this study gives the Italian figure that justifies it in front of an owner who asks why. (b) Parturition material does not go back onto the pasture. It is disposed of. (c) The farm's cat population is the variable that can really be acted upon, and for N. caninum it is the dog population — the abstract declares the presence of dogs among the factors associated with seropositivity for Neospora, together with fertility disorders. (d) Every abortion should be submitted, with the placenta, and handled as biological risk material until diagnosis. It is the only way to make exist, in five years, the data that today are missing.
What this card cannot tell you. Where the 506 sera come from and how they were selected; which cut-offs the ELISAs used and whether they were calibrated for the species; whether the statistical model separated the effect of age from that of species. It has not been read, and the article is open access by license: whoever has access to the publisher's site should open it and correct this card. That is where it is needed most.

3 · Authors
Full list, twelve authors, in the order and form of the Crossref record, identical to the author list of Europe PMC:
Castaldo Elisa · Basso Walter · Moré Gastón · Ciaramelli Alessia · D'Alessio Nicola · Capasso Michele · Sgroi Giovanni · Tonon Sara · Humak Farwa · Gazzonis Alessia · Schares Gereon · Veneziano Vincenzo.
⭐ Interest note from the series. Among the authors is Alessia Ciaramelli, who is vice-president of Camelid Research Studies APS, the association that publishes this series. She is also a co-author of the article reviewed in CRL-L-06. The interest is declared here and in field 20; the record applies the same criteria as the others.
Affiliations per individual author, as recorded in PubMed (PubMed full record, 31/08/2026) — Crossref leaves them empty for all twelve:

No ORCID is registered, for any of the twelve, either in Crossref or in PubMed.
Composition of the group, and why it matters: two Italian universities, two Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali, a private practitioner, and the two European laboratories with the longest reach on the serology of cyst-forming protozoa — Bern (Basso, Moré) and the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (Schares). This is not a group improvised on a fashionable species: the laboratory work is entrusted to those who built these assays.
4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente
4 · Corresponding author's affiliation
Veneziano Vincenzo — Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Productions, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Napoli 80137, Italia; correspondence address [email protected], marked by PubMed as the «Electronic address» of the last author.
The record marks as an electronic address also that of Basso Walter ([email protected], Berna). There are therefore two declared addresses: this card reports both and does not choose for the article which is «the» corresponding one → to be checked against the full text.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo
8 · Article license
CC BY 4.0 for the version of record, from 29/05/2025, as registered in Crossref (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/, published version) and confirmed by the CC BY license field of Europe PMC. Crossref also registers two Elsevier licenses for text and data mining. Read in Crossref on 31/08/2026.
This card may reproduce: text, data, tables and figures, with attribution — the license allows it. In fact, it reproduces only the abstract, because that is the only part the APIs returned. The difference between what could be reproduced and what could be read is the reason why this card has more markers than the others.
9 · Specie e soggetti
506 camelidi sudamericani in Italia: 486 alpaca (Vicugna pacos) e 20 lama (Lama glama).
9 · Species and subjects
506 South American camelids in Italy: 486 alpacas (Vicugna pacos) and 20 llamas (Lama glama).
⚠️ The disproportion between the two groups is the most important fact of this record, and must be kept in mind throughout the card: twenty llamas. Every figure referring to the llamas in this study rests on twenty animals, and field 22 explains what this means in terms of uncertainty.
⚠️ Not retrievable from the abstract → to be checked against the full text: number and geographic distribution of the farms; sampling period; age, sex and reproductive status of the animals; inclusion criteria; intended use (fiber, trekking, assisted interventions, companionship); number of questionnaires collected and response rate.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
- P — alpaca e lama allevati in Italia.
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
- P — alpacas and llamas farmed in Italy.
- E — the exposures investigated are the management variables collected with a structured questionnaire completed by the owners (the individual variables are not listed in the abstract → to be checked against the full text), plus age and species.
- C — internal comparison across exposure classes; no external control group.
- O — seropositivity to Toxoplasma gondii and to Neospora caninum, by ELISA with confirmation by immunoblot.
As a question: how many camelids in Italy have antibodies against T. gondii and N. caninum, and which characteristics of the animal or the farm are associated with seropositivity?
11 · Disegno dello studio
11 · Study design
Cross-sectional serological survey on a national scale, with a structured questionnaire completed online by the owners and risk factor analysis.
⚠️ The sampling method is not stated in the abstract → to be checked against the full text. Whether the 506 sera come from a probabilistic selection, from a convenience collection, or from the residue of samples taken for other purposes, radically changes what the word «nationwide» in the title means. This card does not know this and does not infer it.
12 · Level of evidence
Evidence from a cross-sectional observational study, with retrospective exposure measurement (questionnaire) and a serological outcome measurement confirmed with a second method.
Consequence for the reader: it provides frequencies of seropositivity in Italy and associations, not causes. Seropositivity states that the animal has encountered the parasite, not that it is sick, not that it has aborted, not that it is infectious. And the «risk factors» of this design are cross-sectional associations: exposure and outcome are measured together, and nothing establishes which came first.
13 · Standard di reporting pertinente
STROBE (studi osservazionali).
13 · Relevant reporting standard
STROBE (observational studies). ⚠️ Whether the authors declare it is not verifiable from the abstract → to be checked against the full text. For the questionnaire part a checklist for sample surveys would also be relevant — card CRL-I-04 of this same issue shows an Italian article that declares one (CROSS): the comparison is instructive and is in field 22.
14 · Metodo
Ricostruito dal solo abstract.
- Campione: 506 sieri di camelidi sudamericani (486 alpaca, 20 lama) in Italia.
- Esito: anticorpi verso T. gondii e verso N. caninum, ricercati con saggi immunoenzimatici (ELISA) e confermati in immunoblot.
- Esposizione: questionario strutturato online compilato dai proprietari.
14 · Method
Reconstructed from the abstract alone.
- Sample: 506 sera of South American camelids (486 alpacas, 20 llamas) in Italy.
- Outcome: antibodies against T. gondii and against N. caninum, sought with enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) and confirmed by immunoblot.
- Exposure: structured online questionnaire completed by the owners.
- ⚠️ Not retrievable from the abstract → to be checked against the full text: brand, format and cut-off values of the ELISAs; whether the cut-offs were optimized for the species (a live question in camelids, for the immunological reason explained in card CRL-I-02, field 16); immunoblot protocol and reading criteria; whether the immunoblot was performed on all sera or only on ELISA reactives; number and content of the questionnaire variables; statistical model used for the risk factors (univariable or multivariable), odds ratios with their confidence intervals, handling of clustering by farm; ethical approval; collection period.
None of these absences is a defect of the article: they are the limits of what an abstract contains. They are listed so that whoever uses this card knows exactly what is missing.
15 · Risultati (dati)
| Esito | Complessivo | Alpaca | Lama |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anticorpi anti-Toxoplasma gondii | 34,8 % — 176/506 | 33,1 % — 161/486 | 75,0 % — 15/20 |
| Anticorpi anti-Neospora caninum | 5,7 % — 29/506 | 5,6 % — 27/486 | 10,0 % — 2/20 |
| Anticorpi verso entrambi | 3,6 % — 18/506 | — | — |

Risk factors, as declared by the abstract:
- For T. gondii: older age and llama species (p < 0.05).
- Associated with seropositivity for N. caninum: presence of dogs and fertility disorders.
⚠️ No confidence interval, no odds ratio, no p value beyond the threshold «< 0.05» are reported in the abstract → to be checked against the full text. For N. caninum the abstract does not even state whether the two associations are statistically significant: it says «were associated with». This card reports that wording and does not translate it into «significant».
Concludono che lo studio «provides the first large-scale serological evidence of T. gondii and N. caninum infections in alpacas and llamas in Italy, highlighting their widespread distribution and contributing valuable data to the national epidemiological scenario».
E chiudono con la frase che questa scheda considera la più importante del lavoro: «Further studies are needed to evaluate the role of these parasites as cause of abortion».
16 · Authors' interpretation
Explicitly attributed, from the abstract, and kept separate from field 15.
The authors frame T. gondii and N. caninum as protozoa of worldwide distribution, recognized among the main causes of economic losses in farms due to reproductive failure, and recall that camelids can serve as intermediate hosts. They motivate the study with the scarcity of research on these parasites in South American camelids in Europe.
They conclude that the study «provides the first large-scale serological evidence of T. gondii and N. caninum infections in alpacas and llamas in Italy, highlighting their widespread distribution and contributing valuable data to the national epidemiological scenario».
And they close with the sentence this card considers the most important in the work: «Further studies are needed to evaluate the role of these parasites as cause of abortion».
That is: the link with abortion in camelids is not demonstrated in this study, and the authors write so. Anyone citing this article to claim that toxoplasmosis causes abortion in alpacas makes it say the opposite of its conclusion.
17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori
17 · Limitations declared by the authors
⚠️ Not retrievable: the limitations section is not in the abstract and the full text has not been read → to be checked against the full text. This card does not state that the authors have not declared limitations: it states that it has not been able to read them.
The only recoverable statement of caution is the conclusion of field 16 on the unestablished abortifacient role, which is a statement of limitation in everything but name.
18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione
- ⚠️ Venti lama.
18 · Limitations added by the editorial staff
- ⚠️ Twenty llamas. This is the limitation that governs the reading of the whole work. The 75.0 % of the llamas seropositive for T. gondii are 15 animals out of 20. Editorial calculation — Wilson score method, z = 1.96, not a result of the authors: the 95 % confidence interval of 15/20 runs from 53.1 % to 88.8 %. That of the 10.0 % of the llamas for N. caninum (2/20) runs from 2.8 % to 30.1 %. By contrast, the 33.1 % of the alpacas (161/486) has an interval of 29.1–37.4 %. The llama figure is true and its precision is modest, and anyone citing it without the denominator turns fifteen animals into a law of nature.
- «Llama species» as a risk factor must be read knowing (1). The association is declared significant by the authors (p < 0.05) and this card reports it as such; but a risk factor estimated on a group of twenty, without published odds ratio or interval in the abstract, is not ready to found a species-differentiated recommendation. It must be checked against the full text before being written into a farm protocol.
- Seropositivity is not disease, and in this study it is not even abortion. The cross-sectional design cannot link antibody exposure to a reproductive outcome. The authors say so; this card repeats it because it is the shortcut that is always taken.
- Confounding not controllable by the reader. Age and species are confounded with each other in every population of European camelids: llamas that entered Italy are on average older than alpacas, and age is itself a declared factor. Whether the model is multivariable — that is, whether it separated the two things — is not readable from the abstract.
- The clustered structure. The animals are kept on farms, and seropositivity to T. gondii depends largely on farm conditions (first and foremost cats). Whether the analysis accounted for this is not verifiable.
- The questionnaire is completed by the owners, online. The exposures are therefore self-reported, with the usual risk of recall error and desirability bias. This is not a defect: it is the only practical way to collect this data, and it is the same choice made by the Italian study of card CRL-I-04 — which, however, administers the questionnaire in person, on site. The comparison between the two methods is in field 22.
19 · Finanziamento
19 · Funding
Crossref registers one funder: «Ministry of Health», without a grant number (award field empty). PubMed registers no grant for this PMID (grant list field empty); Europe PMC reports the same funder, without identifier.
Presumably the Italian Ministry of Health — but the record does not specify this, and this card does not infer it: «Ministry of Health» is what is registered → to be checked against the full text for the identity of the ministry, the grant number and the role of the sponsor.
The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper».
20 · Conflicts of interest
Declared by the authors, and retrieved from the conflict of interest declaration field of the PubMed record (PubMed full record, 31/08/2026), verbatim: «Declaration of competing interest — The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper».
Declared by the series: one co-author, Alessia Ciaramelli, is vice-president of the association that publishes this record (see field 3).
21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard (STROBE)
Assessment carried out on the accessible record alone. The items below are not verifiable without the full text, not necessarily absent from the article.
- Design stated in the title or abstract (STROBE 1a) — present: «serological survey» and «risk factors» are in the title. This must be acknowledged.
- Setting, locations and dates of recruitment (STROBE 5) — not verifiable.
- Eligibility criteria and selection methods (STROBE 6) — not verifiable; this is the gap that weighs the most, given the word «nationwide».
- Definition of variables and potential confounders (STROBE 7) — not verifiable.
- Data sources and measurement methods, with detail of assays and cut-offs (STROBE 8) — not verifiable.
- Study size (STROBE 10) — not verifiable; 506 sera with 20 llamas do not look like a sample-size calculation, but this card does not assert it.
- Statistical methods and handling of clustering (STROBE 12) — not verifiable.
- Estimates with confidence intervals (STROBE 16a) — absent from the abstract, for all values.
- Not missing, and to be acknowledged: explicit denominators for every percentage, breakdown by species, outcome confirmation with a second method (immunoblot), a present declaration of conflicts, and a conclusion that states what the study has not demonstrated.
23 · Valutazione a stelle
23 · Star rating
Warning that weighs on all four rows: the score was assigned on the accessible record alone. The full text exists, it is under CC BY license, and it was not readable via the APIs used: whoever reads it should redo this assessment.
| Axis | Score | Rationale, with a fact inside |
|---|---|---|
| A — Scientific quality | ★★★☆☆ | Observational study with stated sample size (506, split 486/20), outcome confirmed with a second method (immunoblot after ELISA), risk factor analysis with p values, explicit denominators in every percentage, declared conflicts and a conclusion that delimits what has not been demonstrated. Does not score higher because the abstract does not contain a single confidence interval, the sampling method is not stated and the selection criteria are not verifiable. |
| B — Clinical utility | ★★★☆☆ | Offers the Italian benchmark that did not exist before, and with it a replicable management procedure: gloves at parturition, disposal of parturition material, control of the farm's cat and dog population. Does not score higher because it does not change any recommendation — it confirms them — and because the llama figure is not yet usable to differentiate management by species. |
| C — Educational value | ★★★☆☆ | Shows complete and verifiable health reasoning: seropositivity as an environmental indicator and not as a diagnosis, with the direction of transmission kept straight (the alpaca does not transmit to humans by contact). Does not score higher because it is a frequency survey, not an educational work, and the explained part lies almost entirely in the introduction — which has not been read. |
| D — Species relevance | ★★★★★ | Italian study, on camelids, on both species kept distinct, with data directly transferable because they are ours. It is the first large-scale national data for these two protozoa in this species in Italy, and it is already taken up by subsequent literature (7 citations registered in Crossref, 5 in Europe PMC as of 31/08/2026, for a fifteen-month-old article). The limitation of the twenty llamas weighs on axis A, where the sample size lies, not on this one. |
24 · Bottom line
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that: in Italy infections with Toxoplasma gondii are frequent in South American camelids — 176 positive sera out of 506, with 161 out of 486 in alpacas — while those from Neospora caninum are infrequent (29 out of 506); that older age and llama species are associated with seropositivity for T. gondii (p < 0.05); and that the presence of dogs and fertility disorders are associated with seropositivity for N. caninum.
It cannot be concluded that: these parasites cause abortion in camelids — the authors write expressly that further studies are needed to establish this — nor that camelids represent a source of contagion for humans by direct contact, which this study has not investigated and which the transmission route of the parasite does not entail. And the 75 % of the llamas cannot be used as a stable estimate: it is fifteen animals out of twenty.
