Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Commento dell'associazione

◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 20/09/2026

«No successful protocol was tested in more than one trial.»

Association's commentary

◆ ASSOCIATION'S COMMENTARY

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 20/09/2026

This is the card the association considers the most important in the issue, and not because the article is the best: because it is the one that closes a door everyone leaves ajar. Mange is, in European practice, one of the three or four reasons why an alpaca farmer calls the vet. For years the answer has been a table of protocols, each with its own published case and its own success. This work takes that table and asks it one single question: how many times has each of these protocols been verified a second time? The answer is none. Not "few": none. «No successful protocol was tested in more than one trial.»

What that means, stated without softening. When a protocol works in fourteen animals and no one retries it, the ways in which that result can be true without being transferable are at least four: the group was small, the animals also recovered because of management changes alongside the drug, the cure measure was chosen after seeing the animals, and — the most insidious — chorioptic mange has a fluctuating course, so an improvement coinciding with treatment is not necessarily caused by the treatment. None of these four is excluded by a second study alone, but without a second study none of them is excluded.

The regulatory datum that weighs more than the clinical datum. «No treatment is authorised for mange in these species.» In Italy this means that every acaricide used on an alpaca is used off-label, under the prescriber's responsibility, with the withdrawal times that off-label use requires and in the absence of registration efficacy data. It is not a formality: it is the reason why a conversation with the owner that begins with «there is a product that works» begins badly. It begins well if it begins with this article.

And there is something to be said about the genre of this work, because it concerns us too. A critically appraised topic is, formally, the same thing a CRL card is: a clinical question, the literature concerning it, the appraisal of that literature, and an answer with its declared degree of uncertainty. Chapter 14 §2.2 states it explicitly. This article is therefore, for us, subject matter and mirror at once — and the mirror gives back a flaw that concerns CATs as a genre and that this card cannot rule out for that very reason: we do not know how the authors searched. A CAT without a declared search strategy asks to be believed on its word exactly where a systematic review asks to be checked. Our assessment of axis A (field 23) is provisional precisely for this reason, and it says so.

What changes for a veterinarian in Italy, today. Four things, and all of them concern what is said, not what is administered. (a) Do not promise a cure. Explain that no protocol has a published replication, that all available studies have groups between two and fifty animals, and that outcome measures are not comparable to one another. (b) Define in advance what will be called a cure — negative scraping, at what distance from treatment, on how many animals in the group — and write it in the record before starting. It is the flaw this CAT finds in all of the literature, and it is the only one the individual clinician can correct alone, in their own case. (c) Treat the group, and treat the environment. No information in this abstract says so, and the card does not attribute it to the authors: it comes from the primary sources collected in chapter 10 §5.2, where the work with the best outcome is also the one in which the acaricide treatment was accompanied by nutritional and grazing measures, in a group that was dying of internal parasitosis and undernutrition. (d) Document. If every case treated in Italy were recorded with an explicit outcome definition and a dated follow-up, in five years the answer to this question would be less poor. It is literally what the authors ask: «newer options should be tested».

What this card cannot tell you. Which protocol to choose, with which molecule, at what dose, how many times. Not because the article is silent: because we have not read it, and it is by subscription. For the doses actually published on camelids, read one by one in the primary sources and with the animal to which they were administered, the reference is chapter 10 §5.2 of the KT — which reports this same article's conclusion as «the sentence a card for breeders must report before any dose table».

Banuls D. · Combarros D. (ORCID 0000-0003-1743-7797) · Pressanti C. · Cadiergues M.-C.

  • Small Animal Clinic, Université de Toulouse, ENVT, 23 chemin des Capelles, Toulouse Cedex 3, 31076, Francia: tutti e quattro;
  • INFINITy, Inserm, CNRS, Université de Toulouse, Toulouse Cedex 3, BP 3028 – 31024, Francia: Combarros, Pressanti, Cadiergues (seconda affiliazione).

3 · Authors

Complete list, four authors, in the order and form of the record — Crossref and PubMed agree:

Banuls D. · Combarros D. (ORCID 0000-0003-1743-7797) · Pressanti C. · Cadiergues M.-C.

⚠️ Given names are not available in either record: both Crossref and PubMed record only the initial for these authors (Crossref puts the initial in the given name field too). The card does not reconstruct them: a deduced name is an invented name → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Only one ORCID is registered, that of the second author, and it appears in both sources.

Affiliations per individual author, as recorded in PubMed and in Crossref:

  • Small Animal Clinic, Université de Toulouse, ENVT, 23 chemin des Capelles, Toulouse Cedex 3, 31076, France: all four;
  • INFINITy, Inserm, CNRS, Université de Toulouse, Toulouse Cedex 3, BP 3028 – 31024, France: Combarros, Pressanti, Cadiergues (second affiliation).

The group is French and dermatological, and works in a small animal clinic: it is the same school from which some of the published protocols on camelid mange originate. The point returns to field 18, remark (c), and is not a bibliographic detail.

4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

4 · Corresponding author's affiliation

⚠️ The corresponding author is not identifiable in the accessible records → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Neither PubMed nor Crossref marks an author as corresponding: PubMed does not report any «Electronic address» for any of the four, and Crossref has no field for correspondence. The card does not deduce from the order: in this same issue, CRL-J-03 is a case in which the corresponding author is the second on the list, and deducing would have produced an error.

5 · Rivista · anno · volume · fascicolo · pagine

Australian Veterinary Journal, 2026, volume 104, fascicolo 5, pagine 316-324.

6 · Identificatori

  • DOI 10.1111/avj.70045
  • PMID 41320559
  • PMCID: non disponibile. Testo completo libero: no. Europe PMC (resultType=core, 20/09/2026) riporta isOpenAccess: N, inEPMC: N, inPMC: N, hasPDF: N, e campo licenza vuoto.

6 · Identifiers

  • DOI 10.1111/avj.70045
  • PMID 41320559
  • PMCID: not available. Free full text: no. Europe PMC (resultType=core, 20/09/2026) reports isOpenAccess: N, inEPMC: N, inPMC: N, hasPDF: N, and empty licence field.
  • Corresponding author's ORCID: not available, because the corresponding author is not identified (field 4). The only ORCID for the work is that of Combarros D., 0000-0003-1743-7797.
  • Full text: not read. It is the most flagged card of the issue together with CRL-J-01, and for the same reason: the article is not deposited in PubMed Central and is not retrievable through the programmatic interfaces used.

7 · Stato della rivista

Verificato il 20/09/2026. Australian Veterinary Journal: ISSN 0005-0423 (stampa) e 1751-0813 (elettronico); NLM ID 0370616; editore Wiley. PubMed: sì, con sottoinsieme IM — Index Medicus. DOAJ: no — interrogata l'API DOAJ su issn:0005-0423 il 20/09/2026: 0 risultati. Rivista in abbonamento.

7 · Journal status

Verified on 20/09/2026. Australian Veterinary Journal: ISSN 0005-0423 (print) and 1751-0813 (electronic); NLM ID 0370616; publisher Wiley. PubMed: yes, with subset IM — Index Medicus. DOAJ: no — DOAJ API queried on issn:0005-0423 on 20/09/2026: 0 results. Subscription journal. It is the journal of the Australian Veterinary Association, with a long tradition in the clinic of production animals; the four-digit NLM ID signals a historic title. For a critical appraisal on a minor species it is a plausible venue, but it is not a dermatology or parasitology journal: the review did not pass through the most specialised reviewers in the field, and this should be kept in mind alongside the judgement in field 23.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo

8 · Article licence

Editorial copyright, all rights reserved. Crossref registers two licences for this DOI, both Wiley and none open:

Europe PMC reports empty licence field. Copyright statement printed in the record: «© 2025 Australian Veterinary Association».

This card may reproduce: factual data and brief quoted excerpts from the abstract, which is the only accessible part of the text. No figure, no table, no excerpt from the body of the article, and none of the treatment protocols appraised — which are precisely what a reader would want, and which all lie in the unread part.

9 · Specie e soggetti

  • i gruppi degli studi inclusi («herd sample sizes») andavano da 2 a 50 animali;
  • tre protocolli hanno mostrato guarigione completa in tutti gli animali trattati;
  • quei tre protocolli riguardavano rispettivamente 14, 2 e 25 animali.

9 · Species and subjects

South American camelids — the review uses the acronym SACs (South American camelids) and the abstract never breaks down the split between alpacas and llamas → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Since the individual studies appraised concern different populations (the literature on chorioptic mange in camelids is largely on alpacas), this is the first thing anyone reading the full text should reconstruct.

There are no subjects of its own: it is a review. The subjects are those of the studies appraised, and about them the abstract states three numerical facts, all important:

  • the included studies' group sizes («herd sample sizes») ranged from 2 to 50 animals;
  • three protocols showed complete cure in all treated animals;
  • those three protocols concerned 14, 2 and 25 animals, respectively.

The parasite: Chorioptes spp., the agent of chorioptic mange — the abstract does not name the mite species → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

This is the only article in the issue that carries the PICO in the title, and it is the kind of publication the PICO was made for.

  • P — South American camelids with chorioptic mange.
  • I — published treatment protocols, whatever they are (the list is in the full text and has not been read) → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
  • C — the protocols against one another; no comparison with placebo is mentioned in the abstract.
  • O — complete cure of the treated animals. The abstract notes that the outcome measure was not standardised across studies, which makes the comparison between protocols less solid than the word "cure" suggests.

11 · Disegno dello studio

11 · Study design

Critically appraised topic (CAT) — structured critical appraisal of a narrow clinical question. PubMed indexes it as Journal Article and Review.

The CAT is a precise genre, described in chapter 14 §2.2 of the KT: question in PICO form, literature search, critical appraisal of the studies found, clinical answer with its degree of uncertainty. It is the very form of the CRL card, and is the reason why this article sits in this issue with a role different from the other four: the others are subject matter, this one is also method.

⚠️ What distinguishes it from a systematic review: a CAT does not require a reproducible and documented search strategy nor a formal risk-of-bias assessment. If it contained one, it would be assessed with PRISMA. Whether it contains one cannot be established from the abstract alone → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

12 · Level of evidence

The level of this article is that of the literature it appraises — and its conclusion is precisely that that literature is insufficient.

Consequence for the reader: this work does not add evidence, it measures it. Its usable result is negative, and it is strong precisely because it is negative: no effective protocol was verified in more than one trial. A synthesis that concludes «no definitive conclusions can be drawn» is more reliable, for someone who has to decide, than one that concludes something without having the right to.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

For a narrative review, chapter 14 §4.2 prescribes SANRA (six items from 0 to 2, total 0-12), with conversion to stars on axis A and a declared ceiling of four stars.

⚠️ SANRA cannot be completed from the abstract alone: four of its six items — justification of the topic's importance, description of the literature search, referencing of statements, appropriate presentation of data — require the body of the article. This work's SANRA score is therefore: [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Field 23 explains how axis A was assigned in its absence, and with what reservation.

If instead the article declared a reproducible search strategy, the relevant standard would be PRISMA 2020 and the assessment would have to be redone on the main scale.

14 · Metodo

14 · Method

As much as is readable in the abstract, and not one character more.

  • Object: «This paper reviews and appraises the published protocols for the treatment of this disease in South American camelids» (editorial translation).
  • Number of studies appraised: not stated in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. It is only known that three protocols yielded complete cure, which implies that the studies appraised are more than three, without saying how many.
  • Databases searched, search strings, dates, inclusion and exclusion criteria, languages, number of reviewers, data extraction procedure: none of these elements appears in the abstract → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. These are exactly the elements that distinguish a well-made CAT from an opinion review, and this is why field 23 carries the reservation it carries.
  • Quality assessment: the abstract states that all studies had several weaknesses, and names two as the most relevant: small sample size and unstandardised outcome assessment. With what tool quality was assessed — if with a tool at all — is not stated → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].
  • Synthesis: narrative. No meta-analysis is mentioned, and with groups from 2 to 50 animals and unstandardised outcome measures it would not have been legitimate.

15 · Risultati (dati)

1«Very few treatments are currently approved for these species, and none for the treatment of mange»Nessun acaricida è registrato per la rogna nei camelidi sudamericani.
2«No successful protocol was tested in more than one trial»Nessun protocollo efficace ha una replica. È il risultato principale, ed è negativo.
3«Three treatment protocols demonstrated complete cure in all animals; they concerned 14, two and 25 animals, respectively»Guarigione completa in 41 animali in tutto (14 + 2 + 25, somma della redazione), distribuiti su tre studi diversi e non replicati.
4«All the studies had several weaknesses, most prominently small sample size and unstandardised outcome assessment»Le due debolezze nominate sono quelle che impediscono sia la replica sia il confronto.
5«Herd sample sizes ranged from two to 50 animals»L'estremo inferiore è due animali: il limite oltre il quale la parola «trial» smette di significare qualcosa.

Conclusione testuale degli autori, che è anche un risultato: «Due to insufficient evidence, no definitive conclusions can be drawn. Several protocols show promising results; newer options should be tested».

15 · Results (data)

The abstract contains five verifiable statements, and the card reports all of them, because they are all that can be reported.

#Statement, as writtenWhat can be drawn from it
1«Very few treatments are currently approved for these species, and none for the treatment of mange»No acaricide is registered for mange in South American camelids. It is a regulatory datum, not an experimental one, and does not depend on the quality of the review.
2«No successful protocol was tested in more than one trial»No effective protocol has a replication. It is the main result, and it is negative.
3«Three treatment protocols demonstrated complete cure in all animals; they concerned 14, two and 25 animals, respectively»Complete cure in 41 animals in total (14 + 2 + 25, editorial sum), distributed across three different, non-replicated studies.
4«All the studies had several weaknesses, most prominently small sample size and unstandardised outcome assessment»The two weaknesses named are those that prevent both replication and comparison.
5«Herd sample sizes ranged from two to 50 animals»The lower bound is two animals: the limit beyond which the word "trial" stops meaning anything.

Authors' textual conclusion, which is also a result: «Due to insufficient evidence, no definitive conclusions can be drawn. Several protocols show promising results; newer options should be tested».

What is not there, and must be said first. In this card no molecule name, no dose, no route, no schedule appears. Not because the article does not contain them — it certainly does, it is its subject — but because they lie in the nine unread pages, and the house rule is that a dosage is written only with dose, route, species and source read together in the same place. For the acaricide protocols actually published on camelids, with the doses read one by one in the primary sources, see chapter 10 §5.2 of the KT, which collects them in a table together with the animal to which they were administered.

Identification of the "complete cure" studies: not possible from the abstract. The number 25 coincides with the sample size of a French 2021 study on an outbreak in a group of 40 alpacas (Castilla-Castaño et al., cited in chapter 10 §5.2), and the number 2 coincides with the two Italian llamas of a 2021 clinical case (Deak et al., same source). But the numerical coincidence is not enough, and in one case it does not add up: for the 2021 work on 25 alpacas, the KT reports, from the primary source, that at six months resolved lesions and negative scrapings concerned half of the animals — which is not «complete cure in all animals». Either the two references are different studies, or the two works use different definitions of cure. The card does not identify the studies → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

16 · Interpretazione degli autori

Attribuita, e tenuta separata dai numeri.

  1. la diagnosi e la gestione delle malattie dei camelidi sudamericani stanno diventando più importanti per ragioni di produttività e di benessere, perché queste specie «sono cresciute in popolarità negli ultimi decenni e sono ora diffuse», tanto come animali da compagnia quanto da reddito;
  2. le acariasi sono comuni nei camelidi sudamericani e causano perdita di produttività, scarso benessere e talvolta la morte;
  3. la rogna chorioptica è una sfida terapeutica riconosciuta in più specie — cioè il problema non è specifico dei camelidi;

16 · Authors' interpretation

Attributed, and kept separate from the numbers. The authors state four things, in decreasing order of strength:

  1. the diagnosis and management of South American camelid diseases are becoming more important for reasons of productivity and welfare, because these species «have grown in popularity over recent decades and are now widespread», both as companion animals and production animals;
  2. acariases are common in South American camelids and cause loss of productivity, poor welfare and sometimes death;
  3. chorioptic mange is a recognised therapeutic challenge in several species — that is, the problem is not specific to camelids;
  4. due to insufficient evidence no definitive conclusions can be drawn; several protocols show promising results, and newer options should be tested.

The fourth is the only one that follows from the data presented. The first three are context, and in the abstract carry no references: they are statements that will be referenced in the body of the article — it is one of SANRA's six items — but this card cannot verify it.

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations declared by the authors

On the literature appraised, the limitations are declared and explicit: small sample size in all studies, unstandardised outcome assessment, no replication of effective protocols.

On their own work, the abstract declares no limitation → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The distinction matters: a CAT that critiques the literature but not itself is halfway through the job, and it cannot be known whether this is the case.

18 · Limitations added by the editorial team

(a) The main limitation of this card is not the article's: it is access's. A CAT is worth its procedure — which databases, which strings, which criteria, how many reviewers — and the procedure lies entirely in the unread part. This card can certify the conclusion, not the way in which it was reached. Whoever has access to the full text should redo fields 13, 14 and 23.

(b) "Complete cure" without a shared definition is not comparable. The authors themselves write that outcome assessment was not standardised. In the camelid literature cure has been defined, depending on the study, as negative scraping, disappearance of pruritus, resolution of lesions, or reduced mite count — and the timing of the check changes everything, because chorioptic mange relapses. Saying «complete cure in 14, 2 and 25 animals» sums three things that might not be the same thing.

(c) Two of the four authors could be authors of one of the protocols appraised, and the records carry no declaration of conflicts. Pressanti C. and Cadiergues M.-C. are co-authors of a 2021 paper on a mange outbreak in 40 alpacas in south-western France (Castilla-Castaño et al., N Z Vet J 2021;69(2):121-126, listed in chapter 10 §5.2). If that work is among those appraised in this CAT — which the abstract alone does not allow to establish — then part of the appraisal is a self-appraisal. This is not an accusation: it is a very frequent circumstance in small specialties, where whoever knows the subject is also whoever published on it, and it is managed by declaring it. This article's PubMed record contains no declaration of conflicts of interest (field 20), and Crossref registers none → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

(d) The journal is not of the field. A critical appraisal on a mite and its treatments passes, in Australian Veterinary Journal, through generalist reviewers. The remark does not touch the correctness of the work; it touches the probability that a gap in the literature search would have been caught.

(e) The question is narrower than how it will be cited. The title says chorioptic mange. In European camelids chorioptic, sarcoptic and psoroptic mange coexist, often in the same animal and the same group, and the therapeutic choice in the field is rarely made on just one of them. Whoever cites this work as «the review on camelid mange» will be widening a question the authors deliberately narrowed.

(f) No breakdown by species. The abstract always speaks of SACs: whether the protocols appraised were tested on alpacas, on llamas, or on both cannot be determined. Chapter 14 §11 asks not to flatten species under the word "camelids", and here it cannot be done otherwise → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

19 · Finanziamento

19 · Funding

Not declared in any of the records consulted. Crossref registers no funder (empty funder list, 20/09/2026); the PubMed record contains no grant entries; the abstract does not mention it. This is not the same as "no funding" → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

20 · Conflicts of interest

⚠️ Not declared in the records consulted. Unlike CRL-J-01, J-02, J-03 and J-05 — which all carry an explicit declaration of absence of conflicts in the PubMed record — this article's record contains no CoiStatement field, and Crossref registers no declarations.

This is an absence in the record, not necessarily in the article: the declaration could be printed in the text and not have been transferred to the metadata → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The card flags it because, together with the remark in field 18c, it is the only point of this work on which a reader has the right to want an answer before using it.

Voce SANRAVerificabile dall'abstract?

21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard

Against SANRA (narrative review), on the basis of the abstract alone — with the caveat that an abstract is not required to contain any of these items:

SANRA itemVerifiable from the abstract?
1 · Justification of the topic's importance for the readerpartially: the growing prevalence of the species and the absence of registered treatments are stated
2 · Statement of concrete aims or formulation of questionsyes: the question is in the title, in the form of a question
3 · Description of the literature searchno → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]
4 · Referencingno, by construction
5 · Scientific reasoningpartially: the studies' weaknesses are named, the reasoning is not laid out
6 · Appropriate presentation of datapartially: sample sizes are given (14, 2, 25; range 2-50), outcomes are not

Overall SANRA score: not assignable → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. Also missing, relative to what is expected of a published CAT: number of studies appraised, inclusion criteria, quality assessment tool, declaration of conflicts (field 20).

23 · Valutazione a stelle

23 · Star rating

Four independent axes, criteria from chapter 14 §11. Caveat that weighs on all four rows, and particularly on axis A: the score was assigned on the abstract alone, and for a review this is more serious than for a primary study, because the quality of a review lies in the search method, which is not in the abstract.

AxisScoreRationale, with a fact inside
A — Scientific quality★★★☆☆ (provisional)SANRA cannot be completed from the abstract (field 21), so the conversion prescribed by chapter 14 §4.2 was not applied. The three stars are assigned on the only verifiable signals: structured question stated in the title, individual studies' sample sizes reported (14, 2, 25; range 2-50), studies' weaknesses named one by one, and a conclusion proportionate to the evidence — i.e. negative. It does not rise to four because the search strategy is not verifiable and because no conflict of interest is declared against the circumstance in field 18c. Grid ceiling respected: a narrative review does not reach five stars on axis A.
B — Clinical usefulness★★☆☆☆The result is negative and contains no procedure: it says what is not known, not what to do. It changes the conversation with the owner and the design of follow-up, which is not nothing, but it remains at two stars also for a rule-based reason: chapter 14 §11 forbids a B score ≥ 3 based on protocols the card does not report in full, and this card reports no protocol, because it has not read them.
C — Educational value★★★★☆It teaches, on a problem the reader genuinely has, what "no replication" means and why a series of published successes is not proof of efficacy; and it shows how a critically appraised topic works, which is the genre in which the collection itself writes. It does not reach five because the reasoning that leads to the conclusion — the part from which one truly learns — lies in the unread pages.
D — Relevance to the species★★★★☆The subject is entirely and solely the South American camelid, the question is clinical and frequent in Europe, and the group is European, so it writes for a management and regulatory context close to the Italian one. (Grid D is written for primary studies; the editorial team applied it to the review's subject matter, and states so.) It does not reach five because alpacas and llamas are not distinguished anywhere in the abstract (field 18f), and because a review without replication in the studies it appraises cannot be «a reference with directly transferable data».

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

What can be concluded: no treatment is authorised for mange in South American camelids, and that among the protocols published for chorioptic mange in these species none of those found effective was verified in more than one trial; that three protocols showed complete cure in all treated animals, but concerned respectively 14, 2 and 25 animals; that the available studies' groups ranged from 2 to 50 animals; and that all studies had weaknesses, primarily small sample size and unstandardised outcome assessment. The authors' conclusion — «due to insufficient evidence, no definitive conclusions can be drawn» — is proportionate to these data.

What cannot be concluded: that one protocol is better than another; that the "promising" protocols are ineffective, because absence of replication is not a refutation; that the conclusion holds for sarcoptic or psoroptic mange, which are not the subject of this review; nor, from the abstract alone, how the authors searched the literature, how many studies they appraised and with what tool they judged their quality — all things that lie in the full text and that this card has not read.
