Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 20/09/2026

◆ ASSOCIATION'S COMMENT

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 20/09/2026

This is the article from which almost everything told about the blood of Andean camelids comes. And it is an article about four species, one of which lives in the hot desert and one of which is not farmed in Europe.

The number that will make the citation's fortune, and the one that actually matters. The number that will be repeated is 17.6 Torr, the highest affinity ever measured in a mammal: and it is a number belonging to the vicuña, a protected wild animal that in Italy is found in very few parks. The alpaca and the llama, in this article, fall within 20.3-21.6 Torr, a range they share — and this is the point — with the dromedary. On this single parameter, the alpaca resembles the desert camel more than it resembles the vicuña. A sentence like «camelids have an exceptional oxygen affinity» is true for the vicuña and approximate for the other three.

The haematocrit 23-34% is not a reference interval, and treating it as one is a clinical error. It is the datum from this article that most easily ends up in the wrong context. Those two extremes are values observed in four different species, without a declared sample size, without a described measurement method, without the animals' age or sex, published in 1988. A reference interval is a different thing: it is built on a defined population of one species, with a minimum number of healthy subjects, with a stated method and calculated percentiles. This article did not do that and did not claim to. Whoever must judge the PCV of an alpaca in clinic should use the species' laboratory intervals, not this line — and should read CRL-A-01, which is the record written specifically for the laboratory bench.

What this article does teach, and cannot be found elsewhere. Three things, all supported by the text we were able to read. (a) A low haematocrit is not a defect to be corrected: in the animals of this group it is the normal condition, and the authors explain why it still works — the red cell is small, and its high oxygen-transfer conductance compensates for the low cellular concentration. A veterinarian who reads a 25% PCV in a clinically healthy alpaca is not looking at an anaemia that must be investigated regardless. (b) The other side of the same coin, and it must be said in the same breath: if the starting reserve is low, every loss weighs more. Haemorrhage from a perforated ulcer, or a Haemonchus infestation, starts from a haematocrit that in a sheep would already be low. The normality of the low value and the severity of its fall are two faces of the same physiological fact, and must be taught together. (c) The adaptation is constitutive, not acclimatory — this is the thesis the authors discuss, not demonstrate, and the record states so in field 16. If they are right, an alpaca born in Lombardy carries with it the same package of adaptations as an alpaca born at 4,000 m: it does not «de-adapt» at low altitude, and does not «adapt» by returning to altitude.

And here is where the account opens that the issue settles in CRL-K-05. If the package is constitutive, the animal in Europe carries it with it together with its cost. The problem of the alpaca on the Po plain is not oxygen: it is hot, humid weather. The two articles must be read in sequence.

What this record cannot tell you. How many animals were measured, with what variability, at what temperature and pH; whether 2,3-DPG was assayed and with what result; what the soleus capillary density is worth; and whether anyone, after 1988, has remeasured the alpaca's P50 with modern methods. The full text is behind a subscription and was not read. Whoever accesses it is asked to redo fields 14, 15, 17 and 21.

1 · Titolo originale

«Oxygen binding properties, capillary densities and heart weights in high altitude camelids»

1 · Original title

«Oxygen binding properties, capillary densities and heart weights in high altitude camelids»

Full, untruncated title, in the form of the Crossref record (queried on 20/09/2026) and identical to the title of the PubMed record, which only adds the final full stop.

2 · Titolo in italiano

⚠️ The title says «high altitude camelids», but one of the four species studied is the dromedary, which is not a high-altitude animal. This is the first point at which this article must be read with the species in hand, and it is why this record opens the list of an issue built on that distinction.

3 · Autori

Klaus D. Jürgens · Manfred Pietschmann · Kazuhiro Yamaguchi · Traute Kleinschmidt

3 · Authors

Complete list, four authors, in the order and form of the Crossref record:

Klaus D. Jürgens · Manfred Pietschmann · Kazuhiro Yamaguchi · Traute Kleinschmidt

The abbreviated form of the Europe PMC record (authorString field) is: Jürgens KD, Pietschmann M, Yamaguchi K, Kleinschmidt T. — same order, same four people.

No ORCID is registered for any of the four authors, either in Crossref or in PubMed. This is expected: the article is from 1988, and ORCID was launched in 2012.

4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

Zentrum Physiologie, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Federal Republic of Germany.

4 · Corresponding author's affiliation

⚠️ The corresponding author is not identifiable in the accessible records → to be checked against the full text.

The PubMed record reports a single affiliation, attached to the first author:

Zentrum Physiologie, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Federal Republic of Germany.

That is, the Center of Physiology of the Hannover Medical School, in the Federal Republic of Germany — the name of the state is that of 1988, before reunification. A first author's affiliation is not a declaration of correspondence, and this record does not confuse the two. No e-mail address appears in the record. The affiliations of the other three authors — including Kazuhiro Yamaguchi, whose name suggests a different institution, but suggesting is not documenting — are not recorded.

  • NLM ID: 8413200.
  • Indexing verified on 20/09/2026: present in PubMed (complete record retrieved with efetch) and in Europe PMC (source: MED). DOAJ not queried: this is not an open-access journal and the entry does not apply. OpenAlex not used, by editorial mandate: in this session author names and bibliographic particulars are taken from Crossref and PubMed, never from OpenAlex.
  • The journal is alive and continues to publish: the same engine returns, under the same title, Dittmann et al. 2015 (vol. 185, issue 5, pp. 559-573, DOI 10.1007/s00360-015-0904-x), cited in field 26.

Regime: proprietario, in abbonamento.

8 · Article licence

Regime: proprietary, subscription-based. Crossref registers for this record a single licence, http://www.springer.com/tdm, with content-version: tdm — that is, a text and data mining permission for machines, effective from 1988-01-01. This is not an open licence and does not authorise reproduction. Europe PMC declares isOpenAccess: N and no licence (license: null). Read on 20/09/2026.

What this record can reproduce: only brief quotations from the abstract, attributed and in quotation marks, under citation right. No figure, no table, no paragraph of the full text — which, in any case, was not read.

9 · Specie e soggetti

Dall'abstract, verbatim: «the blood of the camelid species vicuna, llama, alpaca and dromedary camel».

SpecieRamoHabitat d'origine
Vigogna (Vicugna vicugna)camelide sudamericanoaltopiano andino, alta quota
Lama (Lama glama)camelide sudamericanoaltopiano andino, alta quota
Alpaca (Vicugna pacos)camelide sudamericanoaltopiano andino, alta quota

New World tylopodes at sea level»).

9 · Species and subjects

⛔ Four species, one of which is from the Old World. From the abstract, verbatim: «the blood of the camelid species vicuna, llama, alpaca and dromedary camel».

SpeciesLineageNative habitat
Vicuña (Vicugna vicugna)South American camelidAndean highland, high altitude
Llama (Lama glama)South American camelidAndean highland, high altitude
Alpaca (Vicugna pacos)South American camelidAndean highland, high altitude
Dromedary (Camelus dromedarius)⛔ Old World camelidhot Afro-Asian desert

The most important species-level fact in the article is also the least cited: capillary densities were determined only in two species, and the abstract says so — «Capillary densities were determined in heart and soleus muscle of vicuna and llama». Capillary density was not measured in the alpaca. Whoever cites «camelid capillary density» attributing it to the alpaca is extending a vicuña-and-llama finding.

Measurement condition, as stated by the authors: the parameters were measured in New World tylopods at sea level («measured in New World tylopodes at sea level»). ⚠️ The sentence explicitly covers the three South American camelids; where the dromedary blood came from, and at what altitude it was drawn, the abstract does not say → to be checked against the full text.

What is missing about the subjects, and that no record can invent → all to be checked against the full text: number of animals per species, sex, age, body weight, health status, origin (farm, zoo, free-ranging population), habitual residence altitude, sampling method, and the physico-chemical conditions under which P50 was measured — temperature, pH and pCO₂, without which one P50 is not comparable to any other P50.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

The PICO form does not apply to this study, and forcing it would misrepresent it: there is no patient, no intervention and no clinical outcome. This is basic comparative physiology.

The article's question, reformulated by the editorial team as a cross-species comparison:

  • Population: four camelid species (three South American, one Old World).
  • Comparison: across species, and against the other mammals already measured in the literature.
  • Outcomes measured: whole-blood P50, haematocrit, red cell volume, capillary density of heart and soleus muscle, heart weight as a percentage of body weight.
  • Implicit question: which oxygen-transport characteristics distinguish high-altitude species, and are they constitutive adaptations or responses to the environment?

11 · Disegno dello studio

Studio comparativo fra specie, sperimentale e descrittivo: misure di funzione su sangue ex vivo, istologia quantitativa su cuore e muscolo soleo, morfometria d'organo.

11 · Study design

Comparative cross-species study, experimental and descriptive: functional measurements on ex vivo blood, quantitative histology on heart and soleus muscle, organ morphometry.

⚠️ None of the entries in the closed list of chapter 14 §1.3 describes this design exactly, and the record states this rather than forcing a fit: that list — case report, case series, retrospective or prospective observational, non-randomised controlled, RCT, narrative review, systematic review — is built for the clinical literature. This is basic physiology work, and the entry that comes closest, outside the list, is «comparative experimental study across multiple species, without a control group and without randomisation, because the question does not call for either».

12 · Level of evidence

Comparative experimental study across species — outside the clinical hierarchy.

Consequence line for the reader: this article measures how the blood of four species is made; it does not measure the effect of a treatment, it does not establish a prevalence, and it does not produce clinical reference intervals. The values it reports — in particular the haematocrit range 23-34% — describe what was found in those animals, under those conditions, with a sample size the abstract does not state: using them as normal values to judge the PCV of an alpaca in clinic is a misuse, and field 22 returns to this point.

13 · Applicable reporting standard

ARRIVE 2.0 is the applicable standard for experimental in vivo research on animals. ⚠️ It was not applicable in 1988: ARRIVE dates from 2010 and version 2.0 from 2020. The authors declare no checklist, and could not have.

Methodological consequence, and it holds for the whole of field 21: ARRIVE is used here as a retroactive reading lens, to tell today's reader what cannot be known about this study — not as a reproach to those who wrote it thirty-eight years ago.

14 · Metodo

14 · Method

⚠️ The full text was not read, and the PubMed abstract is truncated: it ends with the notice (ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS), a truncation made by the database, not by the authors. What follows is therefore everything the method allows to be seen from outside, and it is not much.

What is stated:

  • Measurement of the oxygen-binding properties of the blood of the four species, with assessment of interspecific differences («were measured and evaluated with respect to interspecific differences»). Instrumental method, temperature and pH conditions, number of determinations per animal: not stated in the abstract → to be checked against the full text.
  • Determination of capillary densities in heart and soleus muscle, and only in vicuña and llama. Histological technique, exact sampling site, number of fields counted: not stated → to be checked against the full text.
  • Heart weight relative to body weight, expressed as a percentage. How and when the animals were weighed, and whether the hearts came from necropsy or slaughter: not stated → to be checked against the full text.
  • Haematocrit and red cell volume: reported as ranges across species. Method for measuring cell volume — calculated from the blood count or measured optically — not stated → to be checked against the full text.

Inclusion and exclusion criteria for the animals, ethical approval, site and period of the study, number of sites: none of these five appear in the accessible record → to be checked against the full text.

A clue that the method is broader than the abstract. Among the MeSH terms assigned by the National Library of Medicine to this record are «2,3-Diphosphoglycerate» and «Diphosphoglyceric Acids», which are not named in the truncated abstract. The indexer assigned them because the full text addresses them: it is very likely that the article measures erythrocyte 2,3-DPG, which is the allosteric effector on which haemoglobin affinity depends. The editorial team flags this as a lead for reading, not as a result: to be checked against the full text.

15 · Risultati (dati)

P5020,3 - 21,6 Torrlama, alpaca e dromedario, riportati insieme come «the other species»
Peso del cuore / peso corporeo0,5 - 0,7 %lama, alpaca e dromedario («the other camelids studied»)

15 · Results (data)

All values are copied from the abstract, and each carries the species it comes from. Where the abstract gives a range across several species, the range is reported as it stands: unpacking it by species would be an invention.

ParameterValueSpecies of the data
P50 (partial pressure of oxygen at half-saturation)17.6 Torr — declared by the authors as the highest blood oxygen affinity not only among camelids, but among all mammals studied to that pointvicuña
P5020.3 - 21.6 Torrllama, alpaca and dromedary, reported together as «the other species»
Haematocrit23 - 34 %all four species; the authors note that the lowest values are found in the "Lama species" (abstract). ⚠️ In 1988 the alpaca was named Lama pacos, so the phrase may include the alpaca as well as the llama; the abstract does not say and the full text is not readable: it is not known whether the lowest values belong to the llama alone or to the alpaca too
Red cell volume21 - 30 µm³ (in the abstract: «21-30 microns 3»)all four species
Capillary density, heart3,720 cap/mm² on average — defined by the authors as exceptional for a mammal of that body sizevicuña
Capillary density, soleus musclemeasured, but the value does not appear in the abstract → to be checked against the full textvicuña and llama
Heart weight / body weight0.7 - 0.9 %vicuña
Heart weight / body weight0.5 - 0.7 %llama, alpaca and dromedary («the other camelids studied»)

⚠️ What is missing from these numbers, and it is not a detail: no value carries a sample size, a standard deviation, a confidence interval or a statistical test. The published ranges are observed extremes, not reference intervals and not estimates with uncertainty. There is no way to know whether behind «23-34%» there are eight animals or eighty. → to be checked against the full text.

⚠️ And an asymmetry to keep in mind when reading the table: of seven rows, three carry a value for the vicuña alone — and it is the vicuña that supplies the two numbers that will be cited most (17.6 Torr and 3,720 cap/mm²). The vicuña is a wild animal, not farmed in Europe. Of the alpaca, in this article, all that is known is that it falls within three intervals shared with two other species.

16 · Authors' interpretation

(explicitly attributed, not merged with field 15)

The authors put forward two theses, which must be kept distinct.

First — the combination that explains the vicuña's performance. From the abstract: in the vicuña, «a unique combination» of the measured traits appears responsible for an exceptional physical capacity at altitude; blood saturation in the lung is favoured by the high affinity, while oxygen delivery to the tissues is facilitated by the short diffusion distances in the muscle. Both loading and unloading of oxygen are improved by a relatively high oxygen-transfer conductance of the red cell, due to the small cell size, which compensates for the negative effect of the low haematocrit on blood conductance.

Second — and for a European veterinarian it is the more important one: the authors discuss the possibility that these parameters, «measured in New World tylopods at sea level», do not change considerably with transfer to altitude.

⚠️ This must be read precisely. The authors write that the matter is discussed («is discussed»): it is an argued thesis, not an experimental result of the study. This article did not transfer animals to altitude and did not remeasure them. Whoever cites this work to claim that «the alpaca does not de-adapt at low altitude» is citing a discussion, and must say so.

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations stated by the authors

No limitation is stated in the accessible record.

It must be said honestly that this does not mean the article states none: the PubMed abstract is truncated at 250 words, and the limitations section of a physiology article sits in the discussion, not in the abstract. → to be checked against the full text.

The only element with the form of a limitation — the clarification that everything was measured at sea level — the authors present not as a limitation but as a premise of a thesis (field 16, second thesis).

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

18 · Limitations added by the editorial team

  1. Sample size is not recoverable from the record. Without an n per species, none of the seven values in field 15 can be treated as a population estimate. This is the limitation that weighs on all the others.
  2. No measure of dispersion, no statistical test in the record. The differences between the vicuña and the other three species are presented as descriptive contrasts. «17.6 versus 20.3-21.6» is a difference that appears clear-cut; without dispersion it is not a demonstrated difference.
  3. P50 without its measurement conditions is not comparable. Haemoglobin affinity depends on temperature, pH and pCO₂. The abstract does not report them. Comparing this 17.6 Torr with a value read elsewhere without knowing at what temperature and pH is a comparison that does not hold. This record does not do so, and whoever uses it should not either.
  4. The title attributes to all four species a qualifier that one does not have. «High altitude camelids» includes the dromedary, which is not a high-altitude animal. The practical consequence is a standing source of mistaken citations: whoever reads only the title comes away with the idea that the described properties belong to «camelids» as a block.
  5. Capillary density was not measured in the alpaca, and the most-cited value belongs to the vicuña. Whoever looks in this work for a cardiac datum on the alpaca will not find one.
  6. The animals' age is not known. In a slow-maturing species, a haematocrit and a relative heart weight do not mean the same thing at six months and at six years.
  7. No ethical declaration in the record. Some of the reported measurements — heart weight, soleus histology — imply that the animals were euthanised or had died. How, when and with what authorisation, the record does not say.
  8. Thirty-eight years. This article is from 1988 and remains the primary reference source for those numbers. This is not a flaw of the article: it is a measure of how little has been added since, and it is information about the field, not about the author.

19 · Finanziamento

19 · Funding

Not declared in any of the records queried. Crossref registers no funder for this DOI; the PubMed record contains no funding statement; Europe PMC returns an empty grantsList. → to be checked against the full text.

Systematic declaration of funding sources was not widespread editorial practice in 1988: the absence should be read as a feature of the era, not as concealment.

20 · Conflicts of interest

Not declared. The PubMed record contains no conflict-of-interest statement (CoiStatement field absent). As with field 19, the absence reflects 1988 editorial practice.

What can nonetheless be said, and it is not nothing: the only registered affiliation is a public academic institution (Medizinische Hochschule Hannover). No author appears to be affiliated with a commercial entity with an interest in the outcome — which is precisely the risk this field exists to intercept.

In dettaglio:

21 · What is missing against the reporting standard (ARRIVE 2.0, applied retroactively as a lens)

Of the ten essential items («Essential 10») of ARRIVE 2.0, the accessible record allows one to be verified — the design, in summary form. The other nine are not verifiable. In detail:

  • Study design — partially present: it is clear that four species are compared across five parameters. Not clear how many experimental units there are per group.
  • Sample size — absent. No n, for any species, for any parameter. This is the most serious gap.
  • Inclusion and exclusion criteria — absent.
  • Randomisation — not applicable (cross-species comparison: assignment is given by nature). But it should be stated which animals, among those available, entered the study.
  • Blinding of assessment — absent. Histological capillary counts are an operator-dependent measure: observer blinding is relevant and is not stated.
  • Outcome measures — present as a list, absent as an operational definition (with which instrument, under which conditions).
  • Statistical methods — absent. No test is named in the abstract.
  • Experimental animals — absent species by species: sex, age, weight, origin are missing.
  • Experimental procedures — absent in detail (where, when, how, how many times).
  • Results — present as central values or ranges, lacking a measure of variability.

⚠️ Mandatory caveat, worth as much as the list itself: this grid measures the record we were able to read, not the article. An abstract truncated at 250 words does not contain the methodological apparatus of a nine-page article. Whoever accesses the full text must redo this field, and many of these items could turn out to be present.

23 · Valutazione a stelle

23 · Star rating

Four independent axes, criteria from chapter 14 §11. Caveat that weighs on all four rows: the score was assigned on the accessible record alone — abstract truncated at 250 words, Crossref, PubMed and Europe PMC metadata. If anyone reads the full text, this rating must be redone, and axis A may rise.

AxisScoreRationale, with one fact inside
A — Scientific quality★★☆☆☆Objective measurements on four species and five parameters, with the decisive experimental condition (sea level) stated; but no sample size, no standard deviation, no statistical test and no ethical statement in the record, and the published ranges are observed extremes, not estimates. The ★★★ criterion requires «n stated and explicit selection criteria»: here neither is present.
B — Clinical utility★★☆☆☆Provides an interpretive hypothesis to be verified — that a low haematocrit is normal in these animals — but no replicable procedure and no usable reference interval: the values are pooled across four species without n. The ★★★ criterion requires a procedure described in sufficient detail, which is absent here. (Chapter 14 §11 constraint respected: B does not exceed A by more than two stars.)
C — Educational value★★★★☆Explains a pathophysiological mechanism clearly and verifiably: why a left-shifted curve, a small cell and a low haematocrit work together, and why the compensation lies in the red cell's transfer conductance. It is the material from which hypoxic adaptation is taught. It does not reach five because the reasoning is legible only in the abstract: the data that would support it in the classroom are not accessible.
D — Species relevance★★★☆☆Includes direct measurements on alpaca and llama, not extrapolations — and this counts for more than three stars in most comparisons. But the two headline values are the vicuña's, the alpaca appears only within intervals shared with the dromedary, and capillary density was not measured in the alpaca. Moderate generalisability, exactly the ★★★ criterion.

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

It can be concluded that: in the blood of four camelid species measured at sea level, the vicuña shows the highest oxygen affinity ever recorded in a mammal up to 1988 (P50 = 17.6 Torr, versus 20.3-21.6 Torr in llama, alpaca and dromedary), the highest cardiac capillary density (3,720 cap/mm² on average) and the relatively heaviest heart (0.7-0.9% of body weight versus 0.5-0.7%); and that all four camelids have low haematocrits (23-34%, lowest in the abstract's "Lama species": llama, or llama and alpaca, the text does not say) and small red cells (21-30 µm³), a combination the authors interpret as a system in which small cell size compensates for low haematocrit.

It cannot be concluded that: these ranges are reference values for the alpaca or the llama — they have no stated sample size, no dispersion, no stated method, and are pooled across four species; that the vicuña represents «camelids», because on three parameters out of five it is the only one to stand apart; that the alpaca has a known cardiac capillary density, because it was not measured in this study; and that it is demonstrated that these parameters do not change with altitude — the authors discuss it, and discussing is not measuring.
