Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 20/09/2026
kt/verif-K/:
Interrogazione Risultati (alpaca OR llama OR "Vicugna pacos" OR "Lama glama") AND (kidney OR renal) AND (anatomy OR morphology OR morphometry)713 (alpaca OR llama OR "Vicugna pacos" OR "Lama glama") AND ("water balance" OR "water conservation" OR "urine concentration" OR "water deprivation" OR dehydration)540 (alpaca OR llama) AND ("loop of Henle" OR "renal medulla" OR "relative medullary thickness" OR nephron)94 I numeri grandi non vanno letti come abbondanza: sono rumore.

◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENTARY
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial staff · 20/09/2026
This fact sheet exists for one reason only: because someone, before us, took this article and derived from it a chapter on alpaca physiology.
It happened inside this very knowledge base. Version 1 of chapter 07 of the Camelidi KT contained a renal section that came entirely from the dromedary and read as though it concerned alpaca and llama; it even drew an operational line from it — that South American camelids tolerate water restriction better than sheep and goats — which no data supported. Version 2 removed it. This fact sheet takes the next step: it names the article from which that physiology actually comes, and puts it on the table with its species written in the title.
Abdalla's work is a good piece of descriptive anatomy, and it bears no fault. The author wrote dromedaries in the title, put the Latin binomial in parentheses, stated the abattoir source, the absence of funding and the absence of conflicts. The chain of errors begins after him, when «camel» becomes «camelid» and «camelid» becomes «alpaca».
How big the gap is: measured, not remembered. On 20 September 2026 the editorial staff queried Europe PMC with three searches, recorded in full in
kt/verif-K/:
Query Results (alpaca OR llama OR "Vicugna pacos" OR "Lama glama") AND (kidney OR renal) AND (anatomy OR morphology OR morphometry)713 (alpaca OR llama OR "Vicugna pacos" OR "Lama glama") AND ("water balance" OR "water conservation" OR "urine concentration" OR "water deprivation" OR dehydration)540 (alpaca OR llama) AND ("loop of Henle" OR "renal medulla" OR "relative medullary thickness" OR nephron)94 The large numbers should not be read as abundance: they are noise. Among the first twenty-five results of each search, ranked by relevance, not a single primary study on the renal morphology or water balance of the alpaca or the llama appears. What appears are case reports, parasitology, nanobodies, and — a telling symptom — works on the dromedary kidney and on the genome of Old World camelids, which the same keywords fish out because it is they who have that literature. ⚠️ The limit of this measure must be stated: these are three queries on one engine, read across the first twenty-five results. They do not prove that nothing exists; they prove that a good-faith search finds nothing. Anyone who knows of a study we missed should tell us: the fact sheet will be corrected.
What has since been added, and it points in the opposite direction from the convenient one. In 2025 a comparative genomics paper was published (Guo et al., field 26) that compared three Old World camelid species against four New World ones to find what is specific to the former. Among the findings: a deletion of four amino-acid residues in HMGCR, the enzyme that regulates the rate of cholesterol synthesis, specific to Old World camelids. This is not a trivial biochemical detail: the same authors explicitly link it to the multiomic work on the dromedary kidney, according to which inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis genes is part of the renal response to dehydration. Put plainly: part of the mechanism by which the dromedary saves water carries a genomic signature that alpaca, llama, vicuña and guanaco do not have. The extrapolation is not merely undemonstrated — it now has positive evidence against it.
What changes for a veterinarian in Italy, today. Four things, and the first is a prohibition. (a) There is, at present, not a single published datum authorizing the statement that an alpaca or a llama tolerates water restriction better than a sheep or a goat. Whoever claims this is citing the camel. On farm, access to water for alpaca and llama should be managed like that of a small ruminant: always available, clean, not frozen in winter, and monitored when something is suspected. (b) There are no species-specific reference values for urine concentration in alpaca and llama. The practical consequence is uncomfortable and must be accepted: a urine specific gravity in an alpaca today has no published normal range to be judged against, and whoever interprets one is using a reference borrowed from another species. If they do so, they should write it in the record. (c) Precisely because the reference is missing, change matters more than the value. An alpaca drinking much more or much less than usual is a clinical signal even without a number to certify it. In the herd, a water trough emptying at a different rate is a datum. (d) In a South American camelid with urinary signs, the differential should not be built on the kidney by analogy with the camel: the literature includes at least one case of dysuria from discospondylitis and disc herniation in a male alpaca (Sickinger et al. 2016, field 26) — that is, a neurological and vertebral problem presenting as a urinary problem. It is, not by chance, one of the very few indexed works our searches returned on alpaca and the urinary tract: the literature that exists is clinical and anecdotal, not physiological.
What this fact sheet cannot tell you. What an alpaca kidney looks like. How many pyramids it has, whether it has an elaborate pelvis, what its relative medullary thickness is, how much it can concentrate urine, and how well it withstands water deprivation. No one knows, and this is the most important sentence in the fact sheet.
1 · Titolo originale
«Anatomical features in the kidney involved in water conservation through urine concentration in dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius)»
1 · Original title
«Anatomical features in the kidney involved in water conservation through urine concentration in dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius)»
Full, untruncated title, in the form given by the Crossref record (queried 20/09/2026).
⛔ Read the word in the title: dromedaries. The author hid nothing and did not generalize: he wrote the species in the title, in parentheses, with the Latin binomial. The confusion between dromedary kidney and «camelid kidney» is not this article's fault — it is the fault of those who cite it. This is the reason this fact sheet exists.
2 · Titolo in italiano
Nessun ORCID registrato, né in Crossref né in PubMed.
Abdalla», «The authors declare».
3 · Authors
A single author, in the form given by the Crossref record: M. A. Abdalla.
Europe PMC gives the abbreviated form Abdalla MA. No other name appears in either Crossref or PubMed: this is not a truncated list, it is a single-author article, and the fact sheet states this because a reader used to eleven-name author lists might suspect truncation.
No ORCID on record, either in Crossref or in PubMed.
⚠️ Internal record consistency note, verified: the abstract, the author contribution statement, and the conflict-of-interest statement use three different forms — «the authors», «M. Abdalla», «The authors declare». The contribution statement in the full text names one single person, who «conceived and designed the experiments; performed the experiments; analyzed and interpreted the data; contributed reagents, materials, analysis tools or data; wrote the paper» — that is, all five items. The plural elsewhere is an editorial formula, not a second author.
4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente
Affiliazione come registrata in PubMed:
Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, Sudan.
4 · Corresponding author's affiliation
Being the sole author, he is also the corresponding author. Affiliation as recorded in PubMed:
Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, Sudan.
That is, the Department of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Khartoum, Sudan — an institution located within the dromedary's range. This is relevant information, not a color detail: the material comes from a local abattoir, and the environmental context of the study is that of the animal studied.
No e-mail address appears in the PubMed record → to be checked against the full text (the article will report one).

9 · Specie e soggetti
⛔ Specie: dromedario (Camelus dromedarius) — camelide del VECCHIO MONDO, animale del deserto caldo afro-asiatico. Nessun camelide sudamericano compare in questo studio.
Dal testo pieno, sezione Materials and methods, verbatim:
«A total of twenty fresh kidneys in ten apparently healthy (normal) camels were collected from the camel slaughter house where the animals were slaughtered under official license and supervision for meat production. Kidneys with abnormal shapes, hemorrhage or gross pathological signs were excluded.»
Quindi, con i denominatori espliciti:
| Animali | 10 dromedari, «apparentemente sani (normali)» |
9 · Species and subjects
⛔ Species: dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) — OLD WORLD camelid, an animal of the hot Afro-Asian desert. No South American camelid appears in this study.
From the full text, Materials and methods section, verbatim:
«A total of twenty fresh kidneys in ten apparently healthy (normal) camels were collected from the camel slaughter house where the animals were slaughtered under official license and supervision for meat production. Kidneys with abnormal shapes, hemorrhage or gross pathological signs were excluded.»
So, with the denominators made explicit:
| Animals | 10 dromedaries, «apparently healthy (normal)» |
| Organs | 20 fresh kidneys — i.e., both kidneys of each animal |
| Source | abattoir, animals slaughtered under official license and supervision for meat production |
| Exclusion criterion | kidneys of abnormal shape, with hemorrhage or with gross pathological signs |
What is not stated about the subjects → to be checked against the full text (searched and not found in the sections read): age, sex, body weight, breed or type, season of collection, and — the omission that weighs most in a study on water conservation — hydration status of the animals at the time of slaughter. A watered dromedary kidney and a water-restricted dromedary kidney are not in the same functional condition, and the same author elsewhere cites dehydration as a variable that alters the kidney.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
The PICO format does not apply: this is a descriptive anatomical study on cadaveric material.
The article's question, in the author's words (abstract): «to report some of the morphological features of the kidney involved in urine concentration and hence water conservation in the dromedary camel».
Rephrased editorially:
- Object: the architecture of the renal pelvis, the renal crest, and the cortical tubules of the dromedary.
- Comparison: other domestic species, by bibliographic citation and not by direct measurement — equine, caprine, ovine, canine, bovine, porcine and Bactrian camel all appear as second-hand data, taken from the literature, and the fact sheet flags this in field 15.
- Outcomes described: shape and lobulation of the kidney, architecture of the pelvis, number of collateral recesses, number of medullary pyramids, epithelial type of the two faces of the pelvis, alkaline phosphatase activity.
11 · Disegno dello studio
11 · Study design
Descriptive anatomical study on cadaveric material, with three techniques: dissection, corrosion casts in vinylite (polyvinyl chloride), and histology with enzyme histochemistry.
⚠️ As with K-01 and K-02, no item in the closed list of chapter 14 §1.3 fits: this is not a clinical study. The honest definition is «descriptive anatomical series, n = 20 organs from 10 animals, without a measured comparison group and without statistical analysis».
12 · Level of evidence
Descriptive anatomical series — outside the clinical hierarchy.
Bottom line for the reader: this study describes how an organ is built in ten animals of one species. It does not measure a function, does not compare groups, does not apply statistics, and does not demonstrate that the structures described produce the effect the author attributes to them: the connection between pelvic architecture and urine-concentrating capacity is physiological reasoning, built on other people's literature, not a result measured here. ⛔ And above all: it describes the kidney of a species that is not the one cared for by this series' reader.
13 · Relevant reporting standard
No reporting standard applies fully. CARE is for clinical case reports, STROBE for observational studies with exposures and outcomes, ARRIVE 2.0 for in vivo experimental research. This is a morphological study on abattoir material, in which there are neither patients, nor exposures, nor animals subjected to experimental procedures.
The author declares no checklist, and in this case he cannot be faulted for not doing so: none applicable existed. Field 21 therefore uses, as a lens, the basic requirements of a reproducible morphological study — sample size, subject characterization, measurement method, variability — which depend on no published grid.
14 · Metodo
14 · Method
Read in the full text (PMC6948238, retrieved 20/09/2026). Three techniques, applied to undeclared subsets of the twenty kidneys:
(a) Corrosion casts. Fresh kidneys injected through the cannulated ureter with 10 % vinylite (polyvinyl chloride) in acetone. The cut end of the ureter tied off after injection, with a 2-3 hour wait for the vinylite to set. Injected kidneys fully immersed in concentrated hydrochloric acid for 24-48 hours to corrode the tissues, then casts washed under running water. In some samples the renal artery was also injected with vinylite, to show the distribution of its branches relative to the pelvic architecture.
(b) Dissection on fixed kidney. Kidneys fixed by perfusion with 5 % formalin through the renal artery, then dissected, removing the capsule and carefully excising the parenchyma down to an intact pelvis.
(c) Histology and enzyme histochemistry. Samples fixed in 10 % formalin, paraffin sections stained with haematoxylin-eosin. For alkaline phosphatase: both paraffin and cryostat sections, with standard histochemical methods, Gomori calcium method and azo-dye coupling.
⚠️ What the method does not state, and cannot be deduced → to be checked against the full text (searched and not found): how many kidneys were allotted to each of the three techniques; how many histological sections per kidney; how many casts were successful; who counted the recesses and the pyramids, and whether anyone recounted them. No measure of variability between animals appears anywhere: the text gives numbers and lengths as if they were constants of the species.
15 · Risultati (dati)
- la faccia rivolta alla midollare interna della piramide è rivestita da epitelio cubico basso semplice, che l'autore interpreta come permeabile e favorevole al riciclo di urea e acqua dall'urina pelvica verso la midollare;
- Cammello battriano: 11-12 piramidi renali.
15 · Results (data)
Only numbers and morphological descriptions, each with its species and its source. Copied from the full text.
A · Overall architecture — dromedary, n = 20 kidneys from 10 animals
- The dromedary kidney is bean-shaped, smooth, multilobar, unipapillate: the fusion of the renal papillae is complete and forms a common renal papilla or crest (papilla renalis communis), which conveys urine into a central renal pelvis.
- There are neither minor nor major calyces, and the individual pyramids do not project into calyces: the medullary pyramids converge from the corticomedullary junction to form the crest.
- The author defines it as «more or less similar to the equine, caprine, ovine and canine kidney». ⚠️ Second-hand comparison data: the kidneys of horse, goat, sheep and dog were not examined in this study; the comparison is drawn from the cited literature.
B · The renal pelvis — the measurements
| Structure | Value | Species |
|---|---|---|
| Main pelvic cavity, mean length | 8 cm (in longitudinal section, before curving at the poles) | dromedary |
| Main cavity, width | 2-3 cm | dromedary |
| Three-dimensional radiating collateral recesses (recessus collaterales, fornices) | ⚠️ see the discrepancy below | dromedary |
| Medullary pyramids converging to form the crest | up to 36, from dorsal, ventral and lateral regions | dromedary |
⚠️ A discrepancy between the abstract and the full text, verified by the editors and to be stated. The abstract states: «the crescent-shaped main pelvic cavity forms 20-24 three-dimensional radiating collateral recesses». The full text, in the results section, states: «the crescent-shaped main renal pelvic cavity forms a total of 24 three-dimensional radiating fornices», and adds that the 24 are equally distributed between the dorsal half and the ventral half of the pelvis. These are not the same statement: a 20-24 range describes variability among individuals, «a total of 24» describes a constant. Whoever cites only the abstract reports a range the text does not confirm; whoever cites only the text reports a constant the abstract does not confirm. The editors report both and choose neither.
C · The epithelia — the functional point of the description
The two faces of each collateral recess have different epithelia, and the difference is the whole argument of the article:
- the face turned toward the inner medulla of the pyramid is lined by simple low cuboidal epithelium, which the author interprets as permeable and favorable to the recycling of urea and water from the pelvic urine toward the medulla;
- the face turned toward the connective tissue of the recess wall, and the rest of the pelvic wall, are lined by transitional epithelium, described as impermeable to water and urea.
Beneath the cuboidal epithelium, the inner medulla contains vasa recta, thin segments of the loop of Henle and collecting ducts — the structures of the countercurrent mechanism.
D · Enzyme histochemistry
- Intense alkaline phosphatase activity in the proximal convoluted tubules, which the author links to increased membrane transport and reabsorption (of glucose and hence of water). ⚠️ Qualitative data: no quantification, no intensity scale, no comparison with another species measured in the same laboratory.
E · Two numbers that were NOT measured in this study, and that are cited as though they were
⚠️ This is the most delicate part of the fact sheet.
- Relative medullary thickness = 7.89. This is the index that predicts maximum urine concentrating capacity, and in the full text it appears as follows: «We have calculated this ratio in a previous study [ref. 11] and found a value of about 7.89 for camel kidneys». This is not a result of this article: it is a self-citation. Whoever reports it attributing it to Abdalla 2020 is moving a datum from one work to another. The real source is the same author's earlier work → to be checked against the full text (reference 11 of the bibliography, not resolved in this session).
- Bactrian camel: 11-12 renal pyramids. The full text states: «In the Bactrian camel [ref. 34] it was stated that "the medulla was composed of 11 or 12 renal pyramids." This is much less than that found here in the dromedary camel kidney.» — second-hand data on a third species, never verified in this study. The comparison 36 versus 11-12 is therefore between a number measured here and a number read elsewhere.
F · What is missing from all the numbers in this field
None of the reported values carries a standard deviation, a range, or an observed minimum and maximum, and none is accompanied by any statistic. «8 cm», «2-3 cm», «24», «up to 36» are presented as descriptions of the species: without dispersion, how much they vary among the ten animals is unknown.
16 · Interpretazione dell'autore
- l'efficienza del riciclo dell'urea dall'urina pelvica verso la midollare richiede una grande superficie di interfaccia pelvi-midollare;
- la pelvi del dromedario, con i suoi fornici tridimensionali e la cresta che vi sporge dentro, fornisce proprio quella superficie;
- l'epitelio cubico basso su quella interfaccia, contro l'epitelio di transizione impermeabile altrove, rende il riciclo possibile dove serve e lo impedisce dove non serve;
16 · Author's interpretation
(explicitly attributed, not merged with field 15)
The author's chain of reasoning, in his own words:
- efficient recycling of urea from the pelvic urine toward the medulla requires a large pelvi-medullary interface surface;
- the dromedary's pelvis, with its three-dimensional fornices and the crest projecting into it, provides exactly that surface;
- the low cuboidal epithelium on that interface, against the impermeable transitional epithelium elsewhere, makes recycling possible where it is needed and prevents it where it is not;
- conclusion, verbatim from the abstract: «it is concluded that the dromedary camel kidney possesses the anatomical and histochemical requirements for the production of concentrated urine. These requirements allow the kidney to adequately contribute to the camel's ability to conserve water and withstand the aridity of its habitat.»
In the discussion the author adds a contrast worth reporting because it explains the mechanism by difference: the bovine kidney has no pelvis — the major calyces empty directly into the ureter — and the author suggests that the inability to recycle urea is one of the reasons why the bovine kidney is not known to produce concentrated urine. ⚠️ This too is reasoning based on literature, not a measurement of this study.
Finally, to the author's credit for honesty, a sentence that tempers his own thesis should be recorded: «however, urea production shows no correlation with the size of the renal pelvic urinary space» (with two bibliographic references). This is a counterpoint cited by the author himself, which the fact sheet reports because field 16 must also contain what weakens the conclusion.
17 · Limiti dichiarati dall'autore
Nessuna sezione «limiti» è presente nell'articolo.
17 · Limitations stated by the author
No «limitations» section is present in the article. The only statement standing in for one is the reference to an earlier work for morphometric parameters: «The other morphometric parameters required in the camel kidney for concentrated urine production and water conservation have been discussed in our previous report [ref. 11]» — which is a cross-reference, not a limitation.
⚠️ The combination of no stated limitation and a strong conclusion («the kidney possesses the requirements… allow the camel to conserve water») is a datum on reporting quality, and it weighs on field 23.
18 · Limitations added by the editors
- ⛔ The species. This is the limitation that matters more than all the others combined, and it is not a limitation of the article: it is a limitation of how it is used. This study describes the dromedary kidney. Alpaca and llama diverged from Camelus about 16.3 million years ago (Guo et al. 2025, field 26) and live in an environment that poses the opposite problem: not hot aridity, but cold hypoxia at high altitude. Nothing in this article licenses any statement about an alpaca kidney.
- The hydration status of the animals is not known. In a study on water conservation, this is the variable most likely to directly influence what is observed.
- No dispersion on any number. Ten animals could give ten values: the text gives one.
- The number of recesses is discordant between the abstract and the text (field 15B), and the discrepancy is not flagged by the author.
- The most citable value — relative medullary thickness 7.89 — was not measured here and is a self-citation (field 15E).
- All cross-species comparisons are bibliographic. No equine, bovine, ovine, caprine, canine or Bactrian kidney was examined in this laboratory with these methods. The comparison is therefore between one first-hand description and six second-hand descriptions, made by different authors with different methods.
- The structure-function link is not measured. Not a single urine osmolality was assayed, not a single urea concentration was measured. The article describes an anatomy and attributes a function to it; the function is demonstrated by the literature it cites, not by this study.
- The material is from an abattoir, hence post mortem and without control over the animal's condition before death.
19 · Finanziamento
Dichiarato, e negato. Dal testo pieno, sezione Declarations · Funding statement, verbatim:
«This research did not receive any specific grant from funding agencies in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.»
Cioè: nessun finanziamento specifico, né pubblico, né commerciale, né da enti senza scopo di lucro. È una dichiarazione esplicita, non un'assenza.
19 · Funding
Stated, and denied. From the full text, Declarations · Funding statement section, verbatim:
«This research did not receive any specific grant from funding agencies in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.»
That is: no specific funding, neither public, nor commercial, nor from not-for-profit bodies. This is an explicit statement, not an absence.
20 · Conflitti di interesse
Dichiarati, e negati. Dal testo pieno, Competing interest statement, verbatim: «The authors declare no conflict of interest.»
20 · Conflicts of interest
Stated, and denied. From the full text, Competing interest statement, verbatim: «The authors declare no conflict of interest.»
- Variabilità fra soggetti — assente su tutti i valori.
- Finanziamento e conflitti — presenti entrambi, esplicitamente dichiarati.
21 · What is missing relative to a morphological reporting standard
Since no published grid applies (field 13), the editors list the basic requirements of a reproducible morphological study, and state which are missing:
- Overall sample size — present: 20 kidneys, 10 animals.
- Sample size per technique — absent: how many kidneys for the casts, how many for dissection, how many for histology.
- Subject characterization — absent: age, sex, weight, breed, season, hydration status.
- Inclusion/exclusion criteria — present and clear (abnormal, hemorrhagic or grossly pathological kidneys excluded).
- Method of measurement of the reported quantities — absent: with what instrument the 8 cm and the 2-3 cm were measured is not stated.
- Variability among subjects — absent for all values.
- Reproducibility of counting — absent: no second observer, no repeated count.
- Distinction between own data and literature data — partially present: the bibliographic references are there, but in the body of the text other people's data and the author's own run together in the same sentence, and the 7.89 self-citation is the worst case.
- Ethical statement on the origin of the material — partially present: it is stated that the animals were slaughtered under official license for meat production, which makes ethics committee approval unnecessary in many jurisdictions; no formal statement is however reported.
- Funding and conflicts — both present, explicitly declared.
23 · Valutazione a stelle
23 · Star rating
Four independent axes, criteria of chapter 14 §11. The full text was read. ⛔ Warning governing axes B and D: the study concerns a species other than the one cared for by this series' reader. Chapter 14 §11 expressly covers this case and imposes a two-star ceiling on axis D.
| Axis | Rating | Rationale, with a fact inside |
|---|---|---|
| A — Scientific quality | ★★★☆☆ | Stated sample size (20 kidneys from 10 animals), explicit exclusion criteria, three independent techniques that corroborate one another (corrosion, dissection, histology), funding and conflicts declared in full. It does not reach four because no value carries a measure of variability, subject characterization is entirely absent (age, sex, hydration), the abstract and the full text disagree on the number of recesses, and the most citable datum (relative medullary thickness 7.89) is a self-citation, not a result of this work. |
| B — Clinical utility (for those treating South American camelids) | ★☆☆☆☆ | Criterion ★: «result obtained under conditions not reproducible in European practice». For an alpaca and llama veterinarian this article contains no direct practical implication — and its operational value is negative and valuable at the same time: it states what cannot be applied. (For a dromedary veterinarian the score would be different; this series is not written for him, and it says so.) |
| C — Educational value | ★★★★☆ | It clearly and verifiably explains a pathophysiological mechanism — urea recycling across the pelvi-medullary interface, with two different epithelia on the two faces of the same recess — and teaches, in spite of itself, this issue's most useful lesson: how a species-attribution error is born. It does not reach five because the structure-function link is not measured and the reasoning rests on other people's literature. |
| D — Species relevance | ★★☆☆☆ | Ceiling imposed by chapter 14 §11: the study concerns a species (dromedary) other than the one this fact sheet serves (alpaca, llama), and the two groups diverged about 16.3 million years ago in opposite environments. It gets the second star and not the first because it is nonetheless a camelid and because the fact sheet uses it to delimit a real gap, not to fill it. |
24 · Bottom line
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that: the kidney of the dromedary (20 kidneys from 10 animals, abattoir, Sudan) is multilobar and unipapillate, with complete fusion of the papillae into a common renal crest projecting into a pelvis whose main cavity is crescent-shaped, on average 8 cm long and 2-3 cm wide; that from that cavity three-dimensional collateral recesses branch off (24 according to the full text, 20-24 according to the abstract) into which up to 36 medullary pyramids converge; that the pelvi-medullary interface is lined by simple low cuboidal epithelium while the rest of the pelvic wall has impermeable transitional epithelium; and that the proximal convoluted tubules show intense alkaline phosphatase activity. The author concludes that the kidney possesses the anatomical and histochemical requirements for producing concentrated urine.
⛔ It cannot be concluded that: any of this holds for the alpaca or the llama. The study did not examine them, the split between the two branches goes back about 16.3 million years, and at least one molecular component of the dromedary's renal water saving carries a genomic signature specific to Old World camelids (Guo et al. 2025). It cannot be concluded, moreover, that the structures described produce urine concentration: the study did not measure a single osmolality, and the function is attributed by reasoning on other people's literature — literature which, as the author himself reports, also contains a counterpoint (urea production does not correlate with the size of the pelvic urinary space). And above all it cannot be concluded that alpaca and llama tolerate thirst better than a small ruminant: that datum does not exist.

- CRL-F-01 — the F series opens with the first ultrasonographic reference intervals of kidney and spleen in the alpaca. ⚠️ It is the only species-specific renal datum this series possesses, and it is an imaging datum, not one of structure or function. F-01 states how large a live alpaca kidney measures and how it appears on the probe; K-03 states how a dead dromedary kidney is built inside. They do not add up, do not complement one another, and lined up in a row they do not make an alpaca renal physiology.
- CRL-K-02 (this issue) — the opposite and symmetrical case: there, a datum measured on the alpaca is extended to all camelids. This editorial staff flags both extensions by the same standard.
- CRL-K-05 (this issue) — where thermal balance has a species-specific literature that water balance does not. Read in sequence, they show where the field has worked and where it has not.

From there come: the dating of the split to about 16.3 million years ago (which the authors cite from an earlier work, not measure) and the four-amino-acid deletion in HMGCR specific to Old World camelids.
