Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 20/09/2026
Che cosa dice l'articolo, ridotto all'osso.
Tre cose.

◆ ASSOCIATION'S COMMENT
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 20/09/2026
The alpaca ruminates, but it is not a ruminant. This is not wordplay: it is the sentence that prevents half the errors made about this animal.
What the article says, stripped to the essentials. The alpaca stomach has three compartments, called C1, C2, and C3, not rumen-reticulum-omasum-abomasum; C1 has two saccular areas, C2 a comb-like system, and the mucosa is smooth everywhere except in the deep cells of C2, which is papillated; blood arrives from the celiac artery, which divides into the hepatic and left gastric arteries. And the conclusion, which is the part that remains: the similarity to Ruminantia is a convergence, not a kinship — Tylopoda and Ruminantia arrived at rumination in parallel.
Why this changes something for a veterinarian, and it is not philosophy. Because the map does not transfer. If the two systems were the same organ with one piece missing, one could adapt bovine ultrasound by removing the omasum. That is not the case: there is no omasum to remove, the compartments have their own position, shape, and volumes, and the vascularization follows a tree that must be known on its own terms. A finding that in cattle would be «the reticulum» is, in an alpaca, nothing equivalent, and a surgical approach reasoned on cattle is an approach reasoned on the wrong animal.
The mucosa detail is the one that matters at necropsy, and it is the easiest to miss. Mucosa smooth everywhere, papillated only in the deep cells of C2. Whoever opens an alpaca stomach looking for bovine rumen villi will not find them, and whoever finds papillae where none are expected is not looking at a lesion: they are looking at C2.
What this changes in practice, today, in Italy. Three things. (a) Bovine forestomach ultrasound guidelines do not apply, and adapting them by eye is a way of making a systematic mistake. This article provides the structure; the correlation with imaging is in fascicle F of this series, and that is where it must be sought. (b) In the necropsy room and the operating theater, the celiac artery and the left gastric are the names to have in mind. The article states that they also supply the liver, spleen, pancreas, and first portion of the duodenum: it is a shared tree, and a ligature is never as local as it seems. (c) When someone says «camelids are pseudo-ruminants», they are using a word that describes nothing. This article proposes the correct formulation and supports it with morphology: parallel evolution, not homology.
And a note on this series' method, because it shows well here. This card has a hole: the full text was not read, because the retrieval attempt on 20/09/2026 returned a publisher page instead of the PDF. The consequence is that the most topographic article of the five is the one for which we cannot provide the topography: where the compartments project against the wall, how large they are, where the glandular part of C3 begins. We do not write them because we have not read them, and writing them «from textbook memory» would be exactly the fault that version 1 of this knowledge base paid for with one hundred seventy-five findings. The card remains useful for what the abstract supports, and declares the rest as a debt.
What this card cannot tell you. The measurements of any compartment; the topographic projection onto the wall; the relative volumes of C1, C2, and C3; where the glandular portion of C3 begins and how extensive it is; the age, sex, and breed of the six animals; and whether the article declares funding — which PubMed suggests it does. All of this is in the full text, and the full text is open under a CC BY-NC-ND licence: whoever manages to download it should read it, and this card should be updated.

4 · Affiliation of the corresponding author
⚠️ The corresponding author cannot be identified from the accessible records → to be checked against the full text. No corresponding e-mail address appears in the PubMed record.

That is, the Chair of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. This is a piece of information that carries more weight than usual: this is a European study, carried out on alpacas in Europe, at a veterinary anatomy institute that trains European veterinarians. Transferability to the Italian context does not require assumptions.

9 · Specie e soggetti
Specie: alpaca (Vicugna pacos) — camelide sudamericano, Nuovo Mondo. Il termine MeSH assegnato dalla National Library of Medicine è «Camelids, New World».
Dall'abstract, verbatim, con i denominatori:
| Animali dissezionati | 6 alpaca |
9 · Species and subjects
Species: alpaca (Vicugna pacos) — South American, New World camelid. No Old World camelid was dissected in this study. The MeSH term assigned by the National Library of Medicine is «Camelids, New World».
From the abstract, verbatim, with denominators:
| Animals dissected | 6 alpacas |
| of which with vascular system injected with latex milk to illustrate the course of visceral blood supply | 2 |
| of which with formalin-fixed specimen | 1 stomach |
⚠️ What is not declared in the abstract → to be checked against the full text: age, sex, body weight, breed (Huacaya or Suri), origin, cause of death of the animals; whether they were animals euthanized for clinical reasons or submitted carcasses; state of stomach fill at the time of death — a variable that is anything but neutral in a topographic anatomy study of a forestomach; and any ethics committee approval or statement that the material comes from animals that died from other causes.
The comparison with the llama is bibliographic, not experimental. The authors state that they carried out a literature search on the llama stomach and found that the alpaca stomachs examined «resembled each other to a very large degree». ⚠️ No llama was dissected here.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
The PICO format does not apply: descriptive anatomical study.
The justification stated by the authors is, however, explicitly clinical, and deserves to be reported because it is rare in a work of pure anatomy. From the abstract, in summary: most alpaca herds consist of few animals, and as the number of alpacas worldwide grows, so does the number of people who must care for them; nonetheless, little research has been done on the clinical anatomy of the alpaca stomach.
That is: the authors write for clinicians, and they say so.
- Object: topographic and systematic anatomy of the alpaca stomach and its vascularization.
- Comparison: literature on the llama stomach; and, conceptually, the Ruminantia apparatus.
- Outcomes described: number and structure of the compartments, mucosa type, origin and course of the vessels.
11 · Disegno dello studio
Definizione onesta: «serie anatomica descrittiva, n = 6 animali, senza gruppo di confronto misurato, senza morfometria dichiarata nell'abstract e senza analisi statistica».
11 · Study design
Descriptive anatomical study on cadaveric material, with dissection, latex vascular injection, and formalin-fixed specimens.
⚠️ As with the other cards in this fascicle, no entry in the closed list of chapter 14 §1.3 matches. Honest definition: «descriptive anatomical series, n = 6 animals, without a measured comparison group, without morphometry declared in the abstract, and without statistical analysis».
12 · Level of evidence
Descriptive anatomical series — outside the clinical hierarchy.
Line of consequence for the reader: six dissected alpacas describe what the stomach of those six alpacas looks like. The description is plausibly representative of the species — gross anatomy varies little among healthy individuals — but six animals do not allow variability to be estimated, and the article does not estimate it. No functional, clinical, or therapeutic conclusion follows directly from this design.
13 · Relevant reporting standard
No reporting standard fully applies, for the same reasons as CRL-K-03: it is neither a clinical study, nor an observational study with outcomes, nor an experimental in vivo study. The authors do not declare any checklist.
Field 21 therefore uses the same lens used for K-03: the basic requirements of a reproducible morphological study.
14 · Metodo
14 · Method
⚠️ The full text was not read (field 8): what follows is everything the abstract lets us see, which is little for a fifteen-page article.
What is declared:
- Six animals used for dissection.
- Two alpacas with the vascular system injected with latex milk, to illustrate the course of visceral blood supply.
- One stomach used to prepare formalin-fixed specimens.
- A literature search on the llama stomach, used as a comparison term.
What the method does not declare in the abstract → all to be checked against the full text: the dissection protocol; whether morphometry was performed and with what instruments; whether volumes, lengths, wall thicknesses were measured; whether histology was performed beyond the formalin specimens; how many sections and from which sites; whether radiographic or tomographic images were produced; and whether the descriptions were verified by more than one observer.
15 · Risultati (dati)
A · I compartimenti
- C2 presenta un ulteriore sistema a pettine (comb-like system).
15 · Results (data)
⚠️ Warning governing the whole field: the abstract of this article does not contain a single number, apart from the number of animals. There are no volumes, no percentages, no linear measurements, no thicknesses. What follows is therefore morphological description, copied from the abstract, not quantitative data.
A · The compartments
- The alpaca stomach is composed of three compartments, designated C1, C2, and C3.
- C1 shows two saccular areas.
- C2 shows a further comb-like system.
- The compartments are lined with smooth mucosa.
- Only the deep cells of C2 are lined with papillated mucosa.
⚠️ The most important negative finding of the entire K fascicle is not written in the abstract, and it is this: there is no omasum. Three compartments, and the three are C1, C2, C3 — not rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. The authors do not write this because to an anatomist it is obvious; the card writes it because to a clinician accustomed to cattle it is not obvious at all, and it is the leading cause of error when a bovine ultrasound map or surgical landmark is applied to the camelid.
B · Vascularization
- The main blood supply is provided by the celiac artery, which divides into the hepatic artery and the left gastric artery.
- These supply abdominal organs including the liver, spleen, pancreas, and the initial portion of the duodenum.
C · Comparison with the llama
- The literature search on the llama stomach shows that the alpaca stomachs examined «resembled each other to a very large degree». ⚠️ Comparison with the literature, not a direct measurement: no llama was dissected.
D · What is missing, and would be the heart of a clinical card → all to be checked against the full text: the actual topography — on which flank, at what height, against which ribs and which transverse processes each compartment projects in a standing animal; the relations with the diaphragm, liver, spleen, and wall; the relative volumes of the three compartments; the location and extent of the glandular portion of C3; the course of the branches of the left gastric artery on the wall. These are precisely the pieces of information that make a work of anatomy useful to the probe and the scalpel, and the title promises to contain them — «topographic and systematic anatomy». They are not in the abstract.
16 · Authors' interpretation
(explicitly attributed, not merged with field 15)
The authors formulate one conclusion, and it is evolutionary rather than clinical. Verbatim from the abstract:
«The specific design of the stomach, together with related functions and physiological processes, confirms that the evolution of Tylopoda and Ruminantia occurred in parallel and not through homology.»
⚠️ This must be read precisely, because it is the sentence that makes this card useful. The authors do not say that the alpaca «is a ruminant with three stomachs instead of four». They say that the functional similarity — both re-chew the bolus, both must select particles in the forestomach — is the result of two independent evolutionary inventions. The comparison with the rumen is a functional analogy, not an anatomical correspondence.
It should also be said that the word «confirms» does a heavy job: the thesis of the parallel evolution of Tylopoda and Ruminantia predates this article, which brings a morphological argument to it. It is not a discovery of this work, and it is correct that the authors write «confirms» rather than «demonstrates».
17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori
17 · Limitations declared by the authors
No limitation is declared in the abstract. ⚠️ This does not mean the article declares none: a limitations section, if present, is in the discussion → to be checked against the full text.
The only element that has the shape of a limitation is the premise with which the authors justify the work — that little research has been done on the clinical anatomy of the alpaca stomach — which, however, is a motivation, not a limitation of their own study.
18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione
- Sei animali, senza caratterizzazione.
- Nessuna morfometria nell'abstract.
18 · Limitations added by the editorial team
- Six animals, without characterization. Age, sex, weight, breed, origin, and cause of death do not appear. In a species where Huacaya and Suri differ in many respects, even knowing which of the two would be useful.
- No morphometry in the abstract. A topographic anatomy article without a single measurement in the abstract is an article that cannot be cited for a number. Indeed, this card cites none.
- No estimate of variability. Six animals do not allow one to say what is an anatomical variant and what is a constant finding.
- The comparison with the llama is second-hand. «Resembled each other to a very large degree» is a reading conclusion, not a paired measurement. Anyone using it to apply alpaca landmarks to the llama must know that they are relying on a bibliographic comparison.
- Cadaveric material, with the usual limitations. An empty or post-mortem-emptied forestomach does not occupy the same position as a full forestomach in a live, standing animal. For a sonographer this is the difference between a map and the terrain.
- No correlation with imaging. The article — as far as the abstract lets us see — does not set its anatomy against ultrasound, radiology, or tomography, which is the bridge a clinician would need. Fascicle F of this series works on that bridge from the opposite side.
- ⚠️ And a limitation that is ours, not theirs: we did not read the full text. A good part of the previous six points could fall away once faced with the fifteen pages of the article. Whoever accesses it must redo fields 14, 15, 17, and 21 of this card.
19 · Finanziamento
19 · Funding
Not declared in any of the records queried → to be checked against the full text. Crossref records no funder; Europe PMC returns an empty grantsList; the PubMed record contains no funding statement.
⚠️ A clue pointing the other way, which should be stated rather than left unsaid: PubMed assigns this record the publication type «Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't». That qualifier is attributed by indexers when the article declares support from a non-U.S. governmental body. It is therefore likely that a funding statement exists in the full text, and that the bibliographic records do not report it. The editorial team flags it as a clue, not a fact.
20 · Conflicts of interest
Not declared in the accessible records. The PubMed record contains no CoiStatement field → to be checked against the full text.
What can nonetheless be observed: all three authors belong to the same public university chair of veterinary anatomy. No commercial entity appears among the affiliations, and the subject matter — the gross anatomy of an organ — has, in itself, no obvious commercial stakeholder.
- Finanziamento e conflitti — assenti dai record (vedi campi 19 e 20).
21 · What is missing relative to a morphological reporting standard
Same lens applied to CRL-K-03, with the caveat that here it is the abstract that is being measured, not the article:
- Overall sample size — present: 6 animals, of which 2 injected and 1 stomach fixed.
- Sample size per technique — present, and it is a merit: it is clear how many animals for each preparation.
- Subject characterization — absent: age, sex, weight, breed, origin, cause of death.
- Inclusion/exclusion criteria — absent.
- Morphometry and measurement method — absent from the abstract.
- Variability among subjects — absent.
- Reproducibility of observations — absent: no second observer declared.
- Distinction between own data and literature data — present and correct: the authors explicitly state that the comparison with the llama comes from a literature search. This is the point where this article does better than K-03.
- Ethical statement on the origin of the material — absent from the abstract.
- Funding and conflicts — absent from the records (see fields 19 and 20).
⚠️ Mandatory caveat: this grid measures the accessible record, not the article. An abstract does not contain the methodological apparatus of fifteen pages of The Anatomical Record.
23 · Valutazione a stelle
(Vincolo B ≤ A + 2 rispettato.) |
23 · Star rating
Four independent axes, criteria from chapter 14 §11. Caveat weighing on all four rows: the score was assigned on the accessible record alone. The full text is open access but was not reached (field 8). If anyone reads it, this rating must be redone, and axes A and B may both rise.
| Axis | Rating | Rationale, with one fact inside |
|---|---|---|
| A — Scientific quality | ★★☆☆☆ | Sample size declared and broken down by technique (6 dissections, 2 vascular injections, 1 fixed specimen), and correct distinction between own observation and bibliographic comparison on the llama. It does not rise to three because no morphometry exists in the accessible record, subject characterization and selection criteria are entirely absent, and no ethical, funding, or conflict-of-interest statement is retrievable. The ★★★ criterion requires «n declared and explicit selection criteria»: the first is present, the second is not. |
| B — Clinical usefulness | ★★☆☆☆ | Provides a mindset to check — that the bovine map does not transfer and that the celiac tree is the one to know — but not a replicable procedure: the topography that would make the article operational at the probe or the scalpel is not in the record we read. Chapter 14 §11 explicitly forbids a B score ≥ 3 based on details we have not verified in full, and this card respects that prohibition. (Constraint B ≤ A + 2 respected.) |
| C — Educational value | ★★★★☆ | Teaches a way of reasoning, not a fact: convergence versus homology, with the digestive tract as a case study. It is the conceptual correction that prevents the most common error about these animals — treating them as ruminants with one piece missing — and is lecture material. It does not reach five because the figures and the topographic description, which are what one would bring into the classroom, have not been seen. |
| D — Species relevance | ★★★★☆ | Study on alpaca, conducted at a European veterinary anatomy institute (LMU Munich), on a species farmed in Italy: transferability is direct and requires no extrapolation across branches of the family. It does not reach five because the subjects number six and are not described enough (age, sex, breed) to assess their representativeness. |
24 · Bottom line
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that: the alpaca stomach (6 animals dissected) is composed of three compartments, C1-C3, with two saccular areas in C1 and a comb-like system in C2; that the mucosa is smooth in all compartments and papillated only in the deep cells of C2; that the main blood supply comes from the celiac artery, dividing into the hepatic and left gastric arteries, which also serve the liver, spleen, pancreas, and first portion of the duodenum; and that the authors read this design as confirmation of the parallel — not homologous — evolution of Tylopoda and Ruminantia.
It cannot be concluded that: any publishable measurement of anything exists — the abstract does not contain a single number beyond that of the animals — nor that the same landmarks hold for the llama, because no llama was dissected and the resemblance is asserted on a bibliographic basis. And no operational topography can be drawn from this card: where the compartments project, how large they are, where the glandular portion of C3 lies. The title promises the topography, the full text probably contains it, and we have not read it.
