- AQualità scientifica2/5
- BUtilità clinica2/5
- CValore didattico5/5
- DRilevanza per la specie4/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
- A · Qualità scientifica
- La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
- B · Utilità clinica
- Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
- C · Valore didattico
What the four axes measure
- A · Scientific quality
- Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
- B · Clinical usefulness
- Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
- C · Teaching value
- Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
- D · Relevance to the species
- Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?
Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 20/09/2026

◆ ASSOCIATION'S COMMENT
Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial staff · 20/09/2026
This is the card that closes the issue, and closes an account. CRL-K-01 states that the alpaca carries with it, even in the Po Valley, the whole package of high-altitude hypoxia adaptations — high-affinity blood, small red cells, low haematocrit — if the thesis the authors discuss and did not measure is right, that the package is constitutive and is not lost. Here one sees the price: the same animal carries with it an integumentary apparatus built for the cold. In Italy, the problem is never oxygen. It is humid heat.
What the author reports, and no one reports it better. That heat, in an unshorn alpaca, does not exit from the whole body surface: it exits from three short-haired or thin-skinned areas — ventral abdomen, axilla, medial thigh — amounting to about 20% of the skin; that conductance is highest at the axilla and the lower flanks; and that the animal opens and closes those windows with posture.
The operational consequence, which is the editorial team's deduction from the location of the windows and not a procedure described or proven by the article, is precise, and it is the most useful thing in the whole K issue. Wetting the back of an overheated alpaca is wasted effort. The dorsal fleece is the insulator; water landing on it wets the fibre and does not cool the animal, and in a dense fleece it may even worsen air exchange at the skin. Cooling must be directed to where heat can actually exit: under the belly, at the axillae, on the inner thighs — and this is, as it happens, the very gesture an experienced breeder does by instinct and that no one ever explained to them. Now it has a plausible anatomical reason, drawn from the windows the author reports; that cooling there works better than wetting the back, the article neither says nor proves.
On shearing, which is the measure with the strongest evidence in this card. The author reports that infrared thermography shows, in shorn animals, radiation from the entire body surface, no longer only from the windows. This is the finding that closes the loop: shearing does not «cool» in some generic sense, it converts the whole coat into a dissipating surface. And it reports a consequence that in an Italian farm has calendar weight: the fertility of males exposed to heat stress can be improved by shearing. The author does not say by how much or in which studies; pre-summer shearing of a breeding male may have a reproductive rationale as well as a comfort one.
But the right question is not «shear or not»: it is «shear how much». The author says it clearly — shearing also removes protection from cold, and the length of the residual fibre is the crucial variable. ⛔ And here this card stops, and must stop: no threshold in millimetres can be derived from the record we have read. Writing a number would be inventing it. Whoever must decide how much to leave should look at the weather of the following weeks and at local experience, knowing that the risk exists on both sides.
Two numbers, and a warning that applies to the whole literature on this subject. The 20% of thermal windows and the 67% of energy savings from posture are the two numbers that will be copied from this page. They are second-hand numbers. They come from a narrative review that reports them without indicating, in the abstract, who measured them, on which species, or with what method — and the author qualifies the 67% as «calculated», not measured. They are not false: they are not verified by us. Anyone using them in a report, a course, or an expert opinion should write that down. This is exactly the mechanism that chapter 14 of this knowledge base describes as the way in which, in a small and highly self-citing literature such as this one, an unfounded figure becomes a fact by repetition. We declare the chain; breaking it is up to whoever reads the full text.
What changes for a veterinarian in Italy, today. Four things. (a) In the hyperthermia of a South American camelid, cooling should be directed at the thermal windows — belly, axillae, inner thigh — not the back. (b) Shearing is the preventive measure with the strongest support, and it is a seasonal decision calibrated to residual length, not a two-state intervention. (c) The author reports that the fertility of males exposed to heat stress can be improved by shearing; that a breeding male exposed to heat risks its fertility is implicit in that sentence, neither stated nor quantified. In the calendar of an Italian farm, shearing males before summer may therefore have a reproductive rationale, not just a comfort one. (d) Hyperthermia in a warm-humid climate is not an accident: it is the predictable consequence of an evolutionary trade-off, and the author writes so. A breeder who treats heat as a risk that occurs «if it happens» is underestimating a structural feature of the species they raise.
What this card cannot tell you. How many millimetres of fibre to leave when shearing. At what temperature and humidity the risk kicks in. Who measured the 20% and the 67%. How many and which studies on shearing the author is reporting the outcome of. And what, measured, happens to an Italian alpaca on a day in August. For this last question, the right card is CRL-H-03, which on heatstroke carries clinical data, not coat physiology.
1 · Titolo originale
«Relationships between integumental characteristics and thermoregulation in South American camelids»
1 · Original title
«Relationships between integumental characteristics and thermoregulation in South American camelids»
Full, untruncated title, in the form given by the Crossref record (queried on 20/09/2026).
Note the species in the title: South American camelids. It is the only one of the five cards in this issue in which no Old World camelid appears anywhere, and in which the species-specific literature genuinely exists. It counterbalances CRL-K-03: the field has not worked the same way everywhere.
2 · Titolo in italiano
(traduzione redazionale) «Relazioni fra caratteristiche tegumentarie e termoregolazione nei camelidi sudamericani».
2 · Italian title
(editorial translation) «Relazioni fra caratteristiche tegumentarie e termoregolazione nei camelidi sudamericani».
3 · Autori
3 · Authors
A single author, in the form given by the Crossref record: M. Gerken.
Europe PMC reports the abbreviated form Gerken M. This is not a truncated list: it is a single-authored article, as befits an authored review.
No ORCID registered, either in Crossref or in PubMed (the article is from 2010, ORCID was born in 2012).
4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente
Affiliazione come registrata in PubMed:
Department of Animal Sciences, Göttingen University, Albrecht-Thaer-Weg 3, 37075 Göttingen, Germany.
4 · Corresponding author's affiliation
Being the sole author, they are also the corresponding author. Affiliation as registered in PubMed:
Department of Animal Sciences, Göttingen University, Albrecht-Thaer-Weg 3, 37075 Göttingen, Germany.
That is, the Department of Animal Sciences of the University of Göttingen, Germany — the address is given in full in the record, including street and postal code. As with CRL-K-04, this is a European work, written by an institution concerned with animals farmed in Europe.
No e-mail address appears in the record → to be checked against the full text.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo
Nessuna figura, nessuna tabella.
8 · Article licence
Regime: uncertain, and the sources contradict each other. It must be written this way, because that is how it is.
Checked on 20/09/2026:
- Crossref registers three licences, one of which with
content-version: vor:http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/. The other two are Elsevier text and data mining licences. ⚠️ A CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 on a 2010 article is anachronistic: version 4.0 of the Creative Commons licences was published in 2013. The data is most likely the product of a mass metadata reassignment at the change of publisher, not the licence under which the article was originally released. - Europe PMC states together
isOpenAccess: Nandlicense: cc by-nc-nd. The two statements do not sit together, and the card does not choose between them. - Unpaywall, via Europe PMC, lists an «Open access» PDF on Cambridge Core.
- ⚠️ Access attempted and failed. The editors attempted to retrieve that PDF on 20/09/2026: the response was a 939,932-byte HTML page — that is, a page of the publisher's website, not the PDF. The full text was not read.
What this card may reproduce: given the uncertainty, the most restrictive regime applies: only brief quotations from the abstract, attributed and in quotation marks, under fair-quotation terms. No figures, no tables.
9 · Specie e soggetti
Specie trattate: camelidi sudamericani soltanto.
| Domestici | lama (Lama glama) | mantello variabilmente doppio |
| Domestici | alpaca | mantello prevalentemente singolo |
9 · Species and subjects
Species covered: South American camelids only. From the abstract, verbatim, with the distinction between wild and domestic:
| Group | Species | Coat structure, according to the author |
|---|---|---|
| Wild lamoids | vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) and guanaco (Lama guanicoe) | coat formed of two hair types: coarse outer guard hair and finer undercoat |
| Domestic | llama (Lama glama) | variably double coat |
| Domestic | alpaca | predominantly single coat |
⚠️ A taxonomic note that must be made, and which is a fact about the text, not an opinion. The abstract writes «alpaca (Lama pacos)». That binomial is outdated: since genetics established that the alpaca descends from the vicuña and not from the guanaco, the accepted name is Vicugna pacos, which is the one used throughout the rest of this issue and by the National Library of Medicine. This is not an error by the author in 2010 — it was still a name in use at the time — but anyone citing this article today must know that the species name in the text is not the current one, and must not report it as if it were.
What is NOT in this field, and in narrative reviews this is the rule: there is no study population. There are no animals, no sample size, no criterion for the selection of subjects. The author discusses others' studies, and the abstract does not say which ones, how many, or how they were found → to be checked against the full text. This is precisely why field 23 applies SANRA and not the main scale.
10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)
10 · Clinical question (PICO)
The PICO format does not apply to a narrative review.
The question stated by the author, from the abstract: «This review focuses on fine-fibre-producing South American camelids and the relationship between their coat and thermoregulation.»
It is a delimitation of scope, not a question with a verifiable answer — and this is why item 2 of SANRA («concrete aims or questions, not a generic title») does not receive the full score in field 23.
11 · Disegno dello studio
Revisione narrativa.
11 · Study design
Narrative review.
Chapter 14 §4.2 mandates the exact wording, and this card uses it: it is written as «narrative review», never «review». The difference is not stylistic: a systematic review declares a reproducible search strategy, a narrative review does not, and therefore it summarizes one author's reading, not the state of the literature.
⚠️ And it is stated here, explicitly, as chapter 14 §4.2 point 3 requires: the selection of the works discussed in this article is not reproducible. This card summarizes M. Gerken's reading on the topic, not what the literature demonstrates.
12 · Livello di evidenza
Revisione narrativa.
12 · Level of evidence
Narrative review.
Consequence for the reader: everything appearing in field 15 is reported by the author, not measured in this article. The clinical statements of a narrative review are not cited as evidence: they are cited as «the author reports», and where a figure is needed for a decision, one must go back to the primary study and cite that. For two of the numbers in this card — the 20% and the 67% — that primary study cannot be identified from the abstract, and field 22 states what to do about it.
13 · Standard di reporting pertinente
SANRA — A scale for the quality assessment of narrative review articles, la scala pubblicata e validata per le revisioni narrative, richiamata dal capitolo 14 §4.2 (Baethge C, Goldbeck-Wood S, Mertens S, Research Integrity and Peer Review 2019;4, DOI 10.1186/s41073-019-0064-8, PMID 30962953, PMCID PMC6434870, CC BY 4.0).
13 · Applicable reporting standard
SANRA — A scale for the quality assessment of narrative review articles, the scale published and validated for narrative reviews, referenced by chapter 14 §4.2 (Baethge C, Goldbeck-Wood S, Mertens S, Research Integrity and Peer Review 2019;4, DOI 10.1186/s41073-019-0064-8, PMID 30962953, PMCID PMC6434870, CC BY 4.0).
⚠️ PRISMA 2020 does not apply, and should not even be cited as a gap: it is the standard for systematic reviews, and this one is not, and does not claim to be.
The author declares no checklist, which in 2010 is to be expected: SANRA dates from 2019.
14 · Metodo
14 · Method
⚠️ The full text was not read (field 8), and for a narrative review this means that the method, if it exists, is not verifiable.
What the abstract states: nothing about the method. No database searched is indicated, no search string, no period covered, no inclusion or exclusion criterion for the works discussed, no number of references examined → all to be checked against the full text.
This absence is not an accidental flaw of the card: it is the very definition of a narrative review, and it is SANRA item 3 — the one that, as chapter 14 §4.2 says, «in camelids separates the useful review from the decorative one».
15 · Results (data) — that is: what the author reports
⚠️ Warning governing the whole field, to be read before the numbers: nothing that follows was measured in this article. These are statements the author reports from other studies, cited in the full text we have not read. Each item is therefore introduced by «the author reports» and not by «it has been shown».
A · Coat structure
- The author reports that the distribution of the coat over the body is not uniform, and that thermal windows are identified — areas of shorter hair or thinner skin — in three sites: ventral abdomen, axilla, and medial thigh.
- ⚠️ The first of two numbers to handle with care: those windows correspond to «about 20% of the skin», and allow modulation of heat dissipation. The abstract does not indicate the primary study that measured that 20%, nor the species on which it was measured, nor the method → to be checked against the full text. Anyone copying «the 20%» without this warning is passing on a figure whose provenance they do not know.
- The author reports that, unlike sheep wool, lamoid fibres are predominantly medullated.
B · Thermal conductance
- The author reports that the thermal conductance of the summer coat is higher than that of the winter fleece, and that it is highest at the axilla and lower flanks.
- ⚠️ No numerical conductance value appears in the abstract → to be checked against the full text.
C · Behaviour
- The author reports that lamoids have developed behavioural strategies to modify heat loss, by adopting specific postures according to environmental conditions, thereby closing or opening the thermal windows.
- ⚠️ The second number to handle with care: energy savings of 67% attributed to posture were calculated («Energy savings of 67% attributed to posture were calculated»). Calculated by whom, with what model, on which species, at what ambient temperature: the abstract does not say → to be checked against the full text. The verb the author uses is «calculated», not «measured», and the difference must be preserved in every citation.
D · The direction of adaptation — the conclusion that matters for Europe
- The author reports that South American camelids have proven able to adapt to a wide range of climatic conditions.
- And concludes that the specific integumental characteristics of South American camelids indicate adaptive mechanisms «particularly suited to colder climates»; as a consequence «hyperthermia might become a problem in warm and humid areas outside their original habitat».
- ⚠️ The verb is in the conditional — «might become a problem». It is a reasoned physiological prediction, not an epidemiological datum. How often hyperthermia actually occurs in Europe, this article does not say.
E · Shearing
- The author reports that several studies have shown the beneficial effect of shearing against heat stress. ⚠️ «Several studies» — how many and which ones, the abstract does not say.
- In particular, it reports that the fertility of males exposed to heat stress can be improved by shearing.
- It reports that infrared thermography shows that in shorn animals heat is radiated from the entire body surface and is no longer limited to the thermal windows. ⚠️ This is the finding that closes the loop with point A, and it is the only one in the whole article supported by a named measurement technique.
- The other side of the coin, and the author states it in the same sentence: shearing alters the condition of the protective layer, with a loss of thermal conductance that can have adverse effects when animals are kept at low temperatures.
- The variable to be managed is the length of the residual fibre: the author reports that it «appears crucial» for avoiding excessive heat dispersion in cold environments, as demonstrated — it reports — by shearing experiments with different machines. ⚠️ Which machines, what residual length, what temperature: not in the abstract → to be checked against the full text. No threshold in millimetres can be derived from this card.
- The author's conclusion: there is therefore a potential conflict between welfare considerations and industrial demands for fibre length and quality uniformity.
16 · Interpretazione dell'autore
16 · Author's interpretation
(explicitly attributed, not merged with field 15)
The article's whole thesis, in the author's words, is an evolutionary trade-off: artificial selection for coat characteristics has produced marked changes in the number, type, distribution, growth, and natural moult of follicles; South American camelids have developed several special integumental characteristics; and these characteristics indicate adaptive mechanisms particularly suited to cold climates, with hyperthermia as a predictable consequence outside the original habitat.
⚠️ What the author does NOT state, and what is often read as attributed to this article: it does not state that the alpaca cannot live in warm climates — on the contrary, it explicitly reports that South American camelids have proven able to adapt to a wide range of climatic conditions. It states that the margin is narrower on the warm-humid side than on the cold side, and that management must take this into account. This is a difference that changes the tone of every recommendation derived from it.
17 · Limiti dichiarati dall'autore
17 · Limitations declared by the author
No limitation is declared in the abstract → to be checked against the full text.
The only statement functioning as a limitation is the conflict between welfare and industrial demands, which however is a limitation of practice, not of the study.
⚠️ For a narrative review, the structural limitation is not a section to be written: it is the genre itself, and its absence from the abstract is consistent with 2010 editorial practice.
- Nessun dato sull'Europa in quanto tale.
Chi vi accede deve rifare i campi 14, 15, 17, 21 e soprattutto 23.
18 · Limitations added by the editors
- ⚠️ It is one author's reading, and the selection is not reproducible. This is not a flaw of this article: it is the definition of the genre. But it means that no statement in field 15 can be cited as evidence, and that two different readers of the same literature could write a different review.
- The two most citable numbers — 20% and 67% — have, in the accessible record, no identifiable primary source. This is exactly the risk chapter 14 §4.2 describes: a chain of second-hand citations turns a datum into a fact by repetition. This card breaks the chain by declaring it, rather than repeating it silently.
- «Several studies have shown the beneficial effect of shearing» is not a denominator. How many studies, on how many species, with how many animals, with what design: none of this is in the record.
- The species binomial is outdated (Lama pacos, field 9): a formal detail that signals the text's age and that must be corrected in every citation.
- Sixteen years. The article is from 2010 and remains the reference summary on the subject. As with CRL-K-01, this is not a flaw of the author: it is a measure of how little has been added since.
- PubMed does not classify it as a «Review» (field 7): anyone searching for review literature on this subject with the standard filter will not find it. This is an indexing defect that penalizes a useful article, and is worth knowing.
- No data on Europe as such. The conclusion about hyperthermia in warm and humid areas is physiological and predictive; how much this weighs in an Italian barn in August is a question the article does not ask.
- ⚠️ And a limitation that is ours: we have not read the full text, and for a narrative review the full text is the article — that is where the sources, the reasoning, and the numbers with their provenance lie. Anyone who accesses it must redo fields 14, 15, 17, 21, and above all 23.
19 · Finanziamento
19 · Funding
Not declared in any of the queried records → to be checked against the full text. Crossref registers no funder; Europe PMC returns an empty grantsList; the PubMed record contains no funding statement.
20 · Conflicts of interest
Not declared. The PubMed record contains no CoiStatement field → to be checked against the full text.
⚠️ An observation this field exists to make, and which is relevant here. The article closes on a conflict between animal welfare and industrial demands regarding fibre length and uniformity — that is, on an issue with a direct economic interest in the alpaca fibre supply chain. No relationship with industry is declared, and the only affiliation on record is a public university department. There is nothing to suggest a conflict: there is the fact that, on a topic with an identifiable stakeholder, an explicit declaration would have been preferable to its absence.
21 · Cosa manca rispetto allo standard (SANRA, applicata come lente)
21 · What is missing relative to the standard (SANRA, applied as a lens)
See field 23 for the item-by-item score. In summary, what is missing in the accessible record:
- Description of the literature search — absent from the abstract. This is SANRA item 3, and it is the decisive one.
- Referencing of individual statements — not verifiable: the abstract carries no references. The full text certainly does.
- Presentation of outcome data — partial: two numbers (20%, 67%), neither with a sample size, comparison unit, or interval; all other results are expressed in words («higher», «highest», «several studies»).
- Treatment of contrary positions — not verifiable from the abstract.
- Importance of the topic — present, and well argued: selection for fine fibre has changed the coat, and the coat governs thermoregulation.
- Aims and questions — present but generic: «this review focuses on…» delimits a field, not a question.
23 · Valutazione a stelle
| Voce SANRA | Punteggio | Motivazione |
|---|---|---|
Vincolo B ≤ A + 2 rispettato.) |
23 · Star rating
Four independent axes, criteria from chapter 14 §11.
⛔ Axis A: the SANRA sub-scale applies, mandatory for narrative reviews (chapter 14 §4.2 and §11), and the declared ceiling — a narrative review does not reach five stars on axis A.
⚠️ And it applies with a warning the editors cannot bypass: SANRA is scored on the full text, and the full text was not read (field 8). Filling in all six items from the abstract would be a fake score. The editors therefore report what is assessable and what is not, and assign axis A conservatively, stating so:
| SANRA item | Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Importance of the topic | 2 / 2 | The abstract explains why the topic deserves a review: artificial selection has changed the number, type, distribution, growth, and moult of follicles, and the coat governs thermoregulation. The chain is explicit and convincing. |
| 2 · Concrete aims and questions | 1 / 2 | «This review focuses on fine-fibre-producing South American camelids and the relationship between coat and thermoregulation» delimits a field, does not pose a question. |
| 3 · Description of the literature search | not assessable | ⚠️ Absent from the abstract. If present, it is in the full text → to be checked against the full text. It is the decisive item of the genre. |
| 4 · Referencing | not assessable | Abstracts carry no references. → to be checked against the full text. |
| 5 · Scientific reasoning | not assessable (favourable indication) | Not verifiable without the text. The favourable indication is that the author reports the reverse of their own thesis — shearing helps in heat and harms in cold — instead of presenting only the useful side. |
| 6 · Presentation of outcome data | not assessable (unfavourable indication) | In the abstract only two numbers (20%, 67%), without sample size or intervals, and everything else in words. → to be checked against the full text. |
| Total | ⚠️ not computable | 3 points out of the 4 assignable in the two assessable items; four of six items remain open. A partial SANRA total is not a SANRA total, and this card does not publish a fake one. |
| Axis | Score | Rationale, with one fact inside |
|---|---|---|
| A — Scientific quality | ★★☆☆☆ ⚠️ provisional | Conservative score, imposed by the impossibility of scoring SANRA on the full text. The two assessable items give 3 out of 4, which is good; but item 3 — the description of the literature search, the one that distinguishes a defensible review from a list — is not verifiable, and in a narrative review it cannot be presumed present. If the full text declares a search strategy, this score rises, and the card must be redone. Ceiling still applicable: ★★★★ (chapter 14 §4.2). |
| B — Clinical usefulness | ★★☆☆☆ | It offers management indications to be verified, not a procedure: shearing as a preventive measure, which the author reports without saying how much fibre to leave, and cooling the three thermal windows instead of the back, which is the editorial team's deduction (field 22) and not a procedure described or proven by the article. The ★★★ criterion requires a replicable procedure described in sufficient detail, and chapter 14 §11 forbids a B of three or more based on protocols the article does not report in full: the variable the author itself declares crucial — the length of the residual fibre — is not quantified. (Score lowered from three to two stars on 12/10/2026, re-reading the record against chapter 14: the previous version attributed to the article a procedure that belongs to the editorial team. Constraint B ≤ A + 2 respected.) |
| C — Educational value | ★★★★★ | It is the first-choice reference on the integumentary apparatus and thermoregulation of South American camelids: no other work holds together coat structure, thermal windows, conductance, postural behaviour, shearing, and welfare consequences. It is the axis on which a good narrative review may legitimately score five stars while having two out of five on A — and chapter 14 §11 expressly provides for this. |
| D — Species relevance | ★★★★☆ | A review dedicated exclusively to South American camelids, written at a European university, with a conclusion directly concerning the European context: outside the original habitat, in warm and humid areas, hyperthermia may become a problem. It does not reach five because it is one author's reading, and because the two most operationally relevant numbers have no verifiable provenance in the record. |
24 · Bottom line
24 · Bottom line
It can be concluded that: the author, in a 2010 narrative review on South American camelids, reports that the coat is non-uniform over the body, with thermal windows of short hair or thin skin on the ventral abdomen, axilla, and medial thigh amounting to about 20% of the skin; that thermal conductance is higher in the summer coat than in the winter fleece, and highest at the axilla and lower flanks; that lamoids open and close those windows with posture, with energy savings calculated at 67%; that shearing has a beneficial effect against heat stress — with infrared thermography showing, in shorn animals, radiation from the entire body surface — and can improve the fertility of males exposed to heat stress, but carries a risk symmetrical toward cold governed by the length of the residual fibre; and that the integumental characteristics of the species indicate an adaptation particularly suited to cold climates, so that hyperthermia might become a problem in warm and humid areas outside the original habitat.
It cannot be concluded that: any of these statements is demonstrated by this article — it is a narrative review, the selection of the works discussed is not reproducible, and everything is reported, not measured; that the 20% and the 67% have a verified primary source, because it is not identifiable in the accessible record; that there exists a recommended residual fibre length in millimetres, because it cannot be derived; that hyperthermia is frequent in European alpacas, because the author formulates a conditional physiological prediction, not an epidemiological datum; and that the alpaca cannot be raised in warm climates — the author indeed reports that the species has proven able to adapt to a wide range of climatic conditions.

Journal of Thermal Biology 2015;47:1-6.

- CRL-K-01 (this issue) — the account and its price, and should be read in this order. K-01 describes the package of hypoxia adaptations the alpaca carries with it even at sea level; K-05 describes the integumentary apparatus that is the other face of the same evolutionary trade-off. The risk to be managed in Europe is not oxygen: it is humid heat.
- CRL-H-03 — the card from issue H on heatstroke in the camelid, which measures what happens to the haematocrit and albumin of an overheated animal. K-05 explains the apparatus, H-03 measures the patient. Anyone who has to treat an animal in hyperthermia should go to H-03; anyone who has to prevent it or build a summer shelter should stay here.
- CRL-D-06 — the card from issue D on shearing measured in Peru. ⚠️ It is not the same study and they must not be cited as if it were: D-06 reports measurements on shorn animals in an Andean setting, K-05 reports that «several studies» show a beneficial effect without saying which. Read together, D-06 is the data and K-05 is the frame.
- Related work, not carded but verified in this session (Crossref and Europe PMC, 20/09/2026), which addresses the same subject from the side of the sweat gland and which this card does not use as a source of its own data: Moore KE, Maloney SK, Blache D. High follicle density does not decrease sweat gland density in Huacaya alpacas. Journal of Thermal Biology 2015;47:1-6. DOI 10.1016/j.jtherbio.2014.10.009 · PMID 25526647 · not in PMC, subscription access. Primary study on Huacaya alpacas, hence a different (and higher, on axis A) level of evidence than a narrative review. It is the natural candidate for a future card in this collection.

| Interrogazione | Risultati |
|---|---|
("Vicugna pacos" OR "Lama glama" OR alpaca OR llama) AND (kidney OR renal) AND (anatomy OR morphology OR morphometry) | 713 |
(alpaca OR llama OR "Vicugna pacos" OR "Lama glama") AND ("water balance" OR "water conservation" OR "urine concentration" OR "water deprivation" OR dehydration) | 540 |
(alpaca OR llama) AND ("loop of Henle" OR "renal medulla" OR "relative medullary thickness" OR nephron) | 94 |
⚠️ Come vanno letti questi numeri.
The three searches supporting the strongest claim in the issue
The load-bearing claim of CRL-K-03 — on the anatomy and renal physiology of the alpaca and the llama, no indexed primary literature exists — was measured, not recalled. The three queries, run on Europe PMC on 20/09/2026, with their complete results, are deposited in verif-K/ricerca-rene-20260920.txt:
| Query | Results |
⚠️ How to read these numbers. They are not evidence of abundance: they are noise. The strings fish out any article that names a South American camelid and a renal term, in whatever relationship between them. Among the first twenty-five results by relevance for each search — read one by one — not a single primary study on the renal morphology or water balance of the alpaca or the llama appears. What appears are clinical cases, parasitology, nanobodies, and — and this is the symptom — works on the kidney of the dromedary and on the genome of Old World camelids.
⚠️ And the limit of this measure, which must be declared together with the result: these are three queries on a single engine, read in the first twenty-five results. They do not prove that nothing exists. They prove that anyone searching in good faith does not find it. Anyone who knows of a study we missed should flag it: the card is corrected, and this is precisely why the queries are published rather than summarized.
| Scheda | Testo pieno | Marcature |
|---|---|---|

The to be checked against the full text markers, counted
| Card | Full text | Markers |
|---|---|---|
| K-01 | not read (subscription) | many — fields 4, 9, 14, 15, 17, 19, and 21 each carry at least one |
| K-02 | read | few, and all on the supplementary material: the number of alpacas, the ellipticity and viscosity values that exist only in the figures, the role of the funders |
| K-03 | read | few: the characterization of the subjects (age, sex, hydration), the sample size per technique, reference 11 of the self-citation, the correspondence address |
| K-04 | not read (attempted) | many — the whole topography the title promises |
| K-05 | not read (attempted) | many — including four of the six SANRA items, which make the axis A score declaredly provisional |
The rule governing all of them: a marker flags a datum that exists in the article and that we have not read. It is not a filler, it is not an absence of literature, and it must not be confused with the gaps in the field — which are a different matter and which in this issue have a name and a card: CRL-K-03.
