◆ COMMENTO DELL'ASSOCIAZIONE

Camelid Research Studies APS — redazione CRL · 31/08/2026

◆ ASSOCIATION COMMENT

Camelid Research Studies APS — CRL editorial team · 31/08/2026

The error of someone with twenty years of sheep is not one of ignorance: it is transferred competence. A PCV of 0.10, normoblasts, the analyser's blood count read differently. Someone with twenty years of sheep knows that a PCV of 0.10 is an animal that is dying and needs treatment now; knows that normoblasts in peripheral blood are a notable finding; knows how to read a blood count from the analyser. All three of these competences, applied to an alpaca, produce an error.

The first error is one of time. The camelid erythrocyte is elliptical and osmotically resistant, and the animal compensates for a long time: the authors write twice that anaemia «is detected late because the animals can compensate an extremely low PCV». This cuts in two directions and is the sentence to keep. For the good: an alpaca at 0.08 is not necessarily lost, and transfusions work. For the bad: the clinician gets used to seeing numbers that elsewhere would trigger alarm, and the mental threshold slips. The review gives the written threshold — PCV < 0.10 L/L is fatal anaemia and normally requires transfusion — precisely to prevent that slippage.

The second error is one of smear. Normoblasts circulate in healthy camelids: 0 to 3 per 100 leukocytes in the adult (0 to 5 in the llama according to Al-Izzi et al. 2004), up to 26 in the neonatal cria. Whoever counts them as a pathological finding overestimates; whoever lets the analyser count them gets falsely high leukocytes, because the machine mistakes them for white blood cells. The correction formula is in field 15 and is a multiplication: it requires no instrument, only that someone look at the slide. In the authors' case series normoblasts were present in one camelid in three. An uncorrected leukocytosis in an anaemic alpaca is, statistically, more likely to be an artefact than inflammation.

The third error is one of machine. Due to the elliptical shape of the erythrocyte, the calculated haematocrit from the analyser and the centrifuged PCV may not coincide; in two animals with fatal anaemia (PCV 0.07 and 0.08) the ADVIA 2120 gave significant deviations of MCV and MCHC. The authors' conclusion is trivial to carry out and almost never carried out: in the anaemic camelid the PCV is done in a capillary, centrifuged, and read. A microhaematocrit costs next to nothing and beats a twenty-thousand-euro analyser on the one measurement that decides whether to transfuse.

And then there is the thing this card considers most important, and which is an absence. In small ruminants parasitic anaemia is accompanied by Babesia, Anaplasma, Theileria. In the South American camelid, the authors write, for those genera «there are no detailed descriptions in the literature». Not that there are none: that no one has looked. The same applies to immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. A differential diagnosis list that in sheep has five entries, in the alpaca has two documented and three never sought. Whoever concludes «in the camelid there is none» is confusing absence of evidence with evidence of absence — and this issue exists in large part so as not to do that.

What changes for a veterinarian in Italy, today. Three concrete things. (a) In an anaemic camelid, the PCV is centrifuged; the analyser's haematocrit is a second-choice number. (b) In an anaemic camelid, the smear is always looked at, and if there are normoblasts the leukocytes are corrected with the formula. Otherwise one is reading a leukocytosis that is not there. (c) The 4-6 week BCS + FAMACHA© interval is free, requires no blood draws, and intercepts the problem before the PCV reaches 0.05. It is the only sustainable surveillance in an Italian hobby herd — provided one knows what it is actually worth (→ CRL-L-05, which measures it, and the answer is not the same for llama and alpaca).

What this card cannot tell you. What the parasitic burden is that brings an Italian alpaca to that PCV, and with what seasonality: it was not sought in this card, and the review does not say — it speaks of summer and autumn on the basis of German case data. And it cannot tell you whether the 50 µL per day per female worm is a camelid datum or a sheep datum. Until someone opens Clark 1962, that number should not be used to estimate anything in an alpaca.

9 · Specie e soggetti

⚠️ Nessun dromedario, nessun battriano.

1994) a 859 o 849 camelidi sudamericani (validazione FAMACHA©, Storey e coll. 2017 — la numerosità è controversa, campo 18).

9 · Species and subjects

Review on alpaca (Vicugna pacos) and llama (Lama glama) — the authors use the acronym SAC (South American camelids) and treat the two species together, distinguishing them when the source allows it.

⚠️ No dromedary, no bactrian. The title says South American camelids and the text respects it. This is relevant to state here because the physiology of the camelid erythrocyte — the pivot of the whole card — comes from classic works (Schmidt-Nielsen et al. 1956; Livne and Kuiper 1973) done largely on Old World camelids, and the authors cite them as second-hand citations. The species of those original works has not been verified in this session → to be checked against the full text (primary source not open). The fact that the llama erythrocyte is elliptical and osmotically resistant is well established; from which species the original measurement comes, no.

The primary data recalled in the review have very different sample sizes from one another, and every time this card reports one it declares source, species, and denominator: from 7 healthy llamas (bone marrow cytology, Andreasen et al. 1994) to 859 or 849 South American camelids (FAMACHA© validation, Storey et al. 2017 — the sample size is disputed, field 18).

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

It cannot be formulated in full PICO form, and this is a feature of the genre, not a defect of the card. The question the review addresses is: in an alpaca or a llama with suspected anaemia [P], which clinical and laboratory tools [I] allow one to recognise the anaemia, to establish its regenerative or non-regenerative character, and to trace it back to a cause [O], and in what does their interpretation differ from that of small ruminants [C]?

The comparison term [C] is not a study arm: it is the implicit reference of the entire text, which presents FAMACHA© as a tool «adapted from small ruminants» and flags, one by one, the species-specific features that make the adaptation not automatic.

11 · Disegno dello studio

Revisione narrativa (l'articolo si autodefinisce «this review article» e «this review paper»).

11 · Study design

Narrative review (the article defines itself as «this review article» and «this review paper»). No literature search strategy is stated, no inclusion or exclusion criteria for studies, no risk-of-bias assessment. It is not a systematic review and is not assessed with the main scale (chapter 14 §11).

12 · Level of evidence

Narrative review, with the value of an expert synthesis and not of proof. For the reader this means three things: (a) every number reported in this card is a second-hand citation except for those the authors produce from their own previous work; (b) the selection of the literature is not reproducible, and may have favoured the works of the Hannover group, which is by far the most cited; (c) the final recommendations — the 4-6 week interval, the intervention thresholds — are the structured opinion of the authors, not results.

13 · Standard di reporting pertinente

SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles), come previsto dal capitolo 14 §4.2 per le revisioni narrative.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles), as required by chapter 14 §4.2 for narrative reviews. The authors do not declare any reporting standard, and do not declare SANRA. The raw score compiled by the editorial team, item by item, is in field 23.

14 · Metodo

14 · Method

There is no method, and that is the point. The review does not state: which databases were queried, with which terms, in which time interval, how many works were retrieved and how many included, nor who did the selection. The article is organised by topic — blood collection, classification of anaemia, regenerative anaemia, reticulocytes, normoblasts, erythrocyte morphology, inclusions, automated measurement, bone marrow, non-regenerative anaemia, reference values, clinical diagnosis, FAMACHA©, nutritional status, therapy, transfusion — and each section rests on specific citations.

What the review produces of its own and which must be credited: a comparative synthesis across species (what in the camelid does not behave as in the sheep, the cattle, the horse, the dog, the cat) and an explicit final operational algorithm, reported in field 16.

15 · Risultati (dati)

DatoValoreSpecieFonte primaria citata dagli autori

GradoPCV
Anemia lieve0,25 − 0,20 L/L
Anemia moderata0,20 − 0,15 L/L
Anemia grave0,15 − 0,10 L/L
Anemia fatale< 0,10 L/L

(c) Quanto è frequente, in clinica.

15 · Results (data)

There being no original results, this field reports the numerical data that the review conveys, each with species, denominator, and primary source declared by the authors. Every entry is, by construction, a second-hand citation.

(a) Why Haemonchus contortus drains a camelid, in numbers.

DatumValueSpeciesPrimary source cited by the authors
Daily blood loss per adult female worm in the third compartment≈ 50 µL/day⚠️ species of the original measurement not stated by the review → to be checked against the full text (primary source not open)Clark et al. 1962
Blood loss with 1,000 haematophagous nematodes in the third compartment≈ 50 mL/day, «which normally cannot be compensated»inference on the camelid reported by the authorsArsenopoulos et al. 2021
PCV attainable in haemonchosis in camelidsdown to 0.05 L/Lalpaca and llamaFrahm et al. 2016; Wagener et al. 2018a, 2020

Why the flag on the 50 µL is not pedantry. It is the number that underpins the entire quantitative reasoning about haemonchosis, and the review introduces it with «in the third compartment of the host animal» — that is, with the camelid name of the compartment — citing a 1962 work that the literature on haemonchosis attributes to the abomasum. It is not known, from this article, whether those 50 µL were measured in a camelid or in a sheep. Whoever cites it must open Clark 1962. Until then it is a datum of unknown species applied to a different species: exactly the mechanism that has already produced, in this KT, a renal chapter from a dromedary passed off as an alpaca.

(b) The severity thresholds of anaemia, calibrated on the South American camelid. Classification by Wittek and Franz 2021, reported verbatim by the review (second-hand citation: treatise chapter, not open in this session → to be checked against the full text):

GradePCV
Mild anaemia0.25 − 0.20 L/L
Moderate anaemia0.20 − 0.15 L/L
Severe anaemia0.15 − 0.10 L/L
Fatal anaemia< 0.10 L/L

(c) How common it is, in the clinic. Of 300 South American camelids presented to the authors' clinic (Wagener et al. 2021 — which is card CRL-L-05 of this same issue): 55 % of alpacas and 49 % of llamas had PCV below the reference interval of Hengrave Burri et al. 2005b; minimum PCV observed 0.04 L/L in both species.

(d) The five things that in the camelid do not read as in the sheep. This is the core of the card.

  1. The erythrocyte is elliptical and osmotically very resistant. Consequence stated by the authors: water intoxication with haemolysis, described in cattle, has no role in camelids, because these can absorb large amounts of fluid at once.
  2. Normoblasts circulate in healthy camelids. «Unlike other species, in which normoblasts are found only very rarely in peripheral blood, in healthy South American camelids they are found regularly» (Dawson et al. 2011; Fowler and Zinkl 1989). Reference values reported by the review: 0-5 normoblasts per 100 leukocytes and 0-0.8 % reticulocytes in the llama (Al-Izzi et al. 2004, variable by age and sex); 0-3 normoblasts per 100 leukocytes and 0-0.5 % reticulocytes in the adult llama, but up to 26 normoblasts per 100 leukocytes and up to 7.5 % reticulocytes in the neonatal cria (Fowler and Zinkl 1989); 0-3 normoblasts per 100 leukocytes in the adult alpaca (Dawson et al. 2011); 12,000-79,000 reticulocytes/µL in the llama (Van Houten et al. 1992).
  3. Therefore the cell counter miscounts leukocytes. Normoblasts can be classified as leukocytes by automated analysers; in the authors' case series normoblasts were present in the smear of one third of the alpacas and llamas presented to the clinic. The review reports the correction formula, which is the most immediately usable datum of the entire article: > True leukocytes (G/L) = counted nucleated cells (G/L) × 100 / (100 + number of normoblasts > per 100 leukocytes)
  4. Therefore even the calculated haematocrit is wrong. «Due to the elliptical erythrocyte morphology, discrepancies can occur between the PCV, determined by centrifugation in a microhaematocrit capillary, and the automated haematocrit measurement on an analyser, since the latter is calculated mathematically from MCV and erythrocyte count.» The authors conclude that in anaemic camelids the PCV should be determined by centrifugation. In the cited case series (Viesselmann et al. 2019a, 25 South American camelids, ADVIA 2120), significant deviations of MCV and MCHC from the reference method were observed in two animals with fatal anaemia (PCV 0.07 and 0.08 L/L).
  5. Physiological erythrocyte inclusions can be mistaken for parasites. Howell-Jolly bodies in 6 % of erythrocytes of healthy adult llamas (Azwai et al. 2007); Cabot rings in 1-5 % of erythrocytes of each animal in 10 healthy adult llamas in the same work. The review warns that Howell-Jolly bodies are easily confused with haemotropic mycoplasmas by morphology, and that Candidatus M. haemolamae infection should be confirmed by PCR because microscopic examination has low sensitivity.

(e) What matters in sheep and is not documented in the camelid. «For other haemotropic pathogens such as Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp. or Theileria spp., which play an important role in small ruminants, there are no detailed descriptions in the scientific literature regarding South American camelids.» Similarly, idiopathic immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia is cited as a differential diagnosis in a species haematology review, but «there are as yet no specific descriptions of this condition in the alpaca or the llama».

(f) Physiological differences between the sexes. Males and females are affected by anaemia to an equal extent, but female alpacas and llamas have significantly lower erythrocyte counts and haemoglobin than males even under physiological conditions (Hengrave Burri et al. 2005b; Husakova et al. 2015). Whoever uses a single interval for the two sexes errs in one direction only.

(g) FAMACHA© and BCS: the numbers the review conveys.

  • Validation (Storey et al. 2017): on 859 South American camelids according to this review — ⚠️ 849 according to Wagener et al. 2021, which is the other article by the same authors, and Storey's abstract does not give the total → to be checked against the full text of Storey 2017, not accessible. The review reports: best sensitivity 96.4 % with FAMACHA© score ≥ 3 and PCV ≤ 0.15 L/L; best specificity 94.2 % with score ≥ 4 and PCV ≤ 0.20 L/L.
  • Camelids with FAMACHA© score 5: mean PCV 0.06 L/L (Wagener et al. 2022).
  • FAMACHA© does not give a diagnosis of cause: «it does not provide a diagnosis of the cause of anaemia», and further tests are needed, «such as faecal egg counts».
  • Examination rule: both eyes are assessed and the paler side is used, because reddening can lead to underestimating the score; daylight; examiner at the side of the animal; lower eyelid gently lowered while the globe is pushed into the orbit with slight pressure on the upper one.

(h) Transfusions: volumes, with species and source. ⚠️ All values reported by the review as second-hand citations; none is a measurement of this article.

16 · Authors' interpretation

The authors conclude that anaemia is a frequent condition in the alpaca and the llama but «in many animals it is detected late, because the animals can compensate an extremely low PCV for a long time». This is the sentence that summarises the entire difference from the small ruminant, and the authors write it twice.

The authors recommend — and this is their operational algorithm, reported verbatim because it is what a veterinarian can apply tomorrow:

  1. Palpatory assessment of BCS and FAMACHA© score every 4-6 weeks.
  2. Animals with BCS < 2 and/or FAMACHA© score > 2 should undergo further diagnostic work-up for anaemia.
  3. The work-up consists at a minimum of a faecal egg count and determination of the haematocrit by centrifugation in a capillary.
  4. If anaemia is confirmed (PCV < 0.25 L/L), erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC are performed.
  5. The smear should always be assessed in an anaemic camelid: normoblasts, anisocytosis, polychromasia and Howell-Jolly bodies indicate a regenerative character.
  6. The regenerative character is distinguished on the basis of the reticulocyte count; if there are normoblasts, the leukocyte correction is applied.
  7. In the case of fatal anaemia (PCV < 0.10 L/L), transfusion from a healthy donor is necessary.

The authors hypothesise, regarding the regenerative/non-regenerative distinction, that in the camelid the separation is never clear-cut: «in the case of haemonchosis, blood loss can also lead to iron deficiency, which can delay regeneration». This is a pathophysiological hypothesis, not a datum.

The authors declare a gap worth reporting in full, because it is the reason why reticulocytosis cannot be used as in carnivores: reference values of reticulocytes for the alpaca, and a classification of degrees of regeneration based on the reticulocyte count, «are currently not available for South American camelids». The authors suggest, as guidance, data from the dog (Knottenbelt 2001: > 1 % reticulocytes = weak regeneration,

20 % = strong regeneration) — **and the card flags that this is a dog datum applied to the

camelid by analogy, declared by the authors themselves.**

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations declared by the authors

The authors do not dedicate a section to limitations — this is the typical flaw of the narrative review — but scatter throughout the text a considerable number of explicit admissions of ignorance, which must be cited because they are, in fact, the limitations of the field:

  • «Although reticulocytes can also be determined by automated methods, it is not yet known how accurate these reticulocyte assays are in camelids.»
  • «Little is known to date about the role of Cabot rings in South American camelids.»
  • «Whether RDW is also useful in camelids with severe or fatal anaemia to distinguish regenerative from non-regenerative anaemia remains debatable.»
  • «It was not possible to find in the current literature descriptions relating to variations in erythrocyte indices in South American camelids with cobalt or copper deficiency.»
  • «There is still too little data on normoblasts in alpacas in general, and further research is needed.»
  • «When using reference values, it must be ensured that the method by which the reference value was established is consistent with the method used in the laboratory.»

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

Campo distinto dal 17.

18 · Limitations added by the editorial team

Field distinct from 17.

  1. No search strategy, and therefore no reproducibility. This is the structural limitation of the genre and the reason for the four-star ceiling on axis A (chapter 14 §11).
  2. Very dense self-citation. The Hannover group — Wagener, Ganter and coauthors — appears as the primary source in a very high share of the quantitative statements on camelids (Wagener et al. 2018a, 2018b, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023; Wagener and Ganter 2020; Neubert et al. 2021, 2022). This is not in itself a flaw — in this field that group is the European literature — but it means that the review and its sources share the same limitations, and that an independent review does not exist.
  3. A numerical discrepancy internal to the group, on the Storey 2017 sample size. This review writes 859; Wagener et al. 2021 writes 347 alpacas and 502 llamas, which makes 849. Ten animals of difference between two articles by the same authors on the same study by others. The card does not choose: it reports both and marks the true total as to be checked in Storey.
  4. No evidence summary table. The article is dense with numbers but never gathers them into a comparative table: the reader must extract them from the prose, and this is precisely the point where wrong citations arise.
  5. The distinction between alpaca and llama is kept only where the source keeps it. In several passages the text says «SAC» where the original datum concerned a single species. This card has reconstructed the species entry by entry where possible, and where it was not possible it declares so.
  6. The final algorithm is not validated. The 4-6 week interval, the BCS < 2 threshold, and the FAMACHA© > 2 threshold are expert recommendations: no study has measured their diagnostic yield in Europe. Field 16 reports them as recommendations, not as results, and CRL-L-05 shows how fragile the FAMACHA© component of the algorithm is in alpacas.

19 · Finanziamento

Dichiarato testualmente: «This Open Access publication was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) within the program LE 824/10–1 Open Access Publication Costs and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation. Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.»

19 · Funding

Declared verbatim: «This Open Access publication was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) within the program LE 824/10–1 Open Access Publication Costs and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation. Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.»

Sponsor's role: none on the research. The funding covers only the costs of open-access publication, not the work. This is a distinction that chapter 14 §5.4 requires to be made explicit, and here it is: there is no research funding to declare, because there is no research — it is a review.

20 · Conflitti di interesse

«The authors declare no competing interests» — dichiarazione testuale nelle Declarations.

20 · Conflicts of interest

«The authors declare no competing interests» — verbatim declaration in the Declarations. The ethics declaration reads «Ethics statement: Not applicable», consistent with a work with no data collection on animals. No author appears affiliated with a manufacturer of anthelmintics, blood products, or haematology analysers: the three affiliations are the same university clinic.

Nessuna banca dati, nessuna stringa, nessun intervallo temporale, nessun criterio. È l'unica voce a zero.

21 · What is missing relative to the reporting standard (SANRA)

SANRA has six items; the raw score is in field 23. What is missing in the strict sense:

  • Item 3 — description of the literature search: entirely absent. No database, no search string, no time window, no criterion. It is the only item with zero.
  • Item 2 — objectives: stated, but in generic form («this review paper will explain causes and diagnosis of anaemia in alpaca and llama»), not as defined questions.
  • Not missing, and to be credited: the justification of the importance for the reader is explicit and quantified already in the introduction; the referencing is precise and verifiable line by line; the reasoning consistently distinguishes what is known in the camelid from what is transferred from other species; the data are presented with the species and, where the source allows, with the denominator.

23 · Valutazione a stelle

Quattro assi indipendenti.

La trasferibilità all'Italia è diretta.

23 · Star rating

Four independent axes. Axis A is assessed with the SANRA sub-scale required by chapter 14 §11 for narrative reviews, and the raw score is published item by item so that whoever does not share the conversion has the original data.

SANRA compiled by the editorial team — 9/12.

SANRA itemScoreReason
1 · Justification of the importance for the reader2/2Explicit and quantified already in the introduction: growth of camelids in Europe, frequent anaemia, PCV < 0.10 L/L a life-threatening condition.
2 · Statement of concrete aims or formulation of questions1/2Aim stated but generic: «to explain causes and diagnosis of anaemia in alpaca and llama». No defined question.
3 · Description of the literature search0/2Entirely absent. No database, search string, time window, or inclusion criterion.
4 · Referencing2/2Every substantial statement carries a specific, verifiable citation; statements about species other than the camelid are explicitly attributed.
5 · Scientific reasoning2/2Consistently distinguishes what is measured in the camelid from what is transferred from dog, horse, cat, cattle, or sheep, and repeatedly declares the gaps instead of filling them.
6 · Appropriate presentation of data2/2Numbers reported with species and, where the source allows, denominator; figures of real smears with instructive captions. Penalised in field 18 for the absence of a summary table, which SANRA however does not require.

SANRA → stars conversion per chapter 14 §11: 9-12 → ★★★★☆.

AxisRatingReasoning, with one fact inside
A — Scientific quality★★★★☆SANRA 9/12, with a flat zero on the item that matters most for reproducibility (the literature search). The stated ceiling of chapter 14 §11 applies: a narrative review does not reach five stars on this axis, and this one is no exception — the selection of the literature is not reproducible and the density of self-citation is high.
B — Clinical utility★★★★☆Result applicable with reasonable confidence, with explicit conditions of use: the leukocyte correction formula, the requirement for centrifuged PCV, the severity and transfusion thresholds, the seven-step algorithm. Does not reach five because none of these recommendations has been validated prospectively in Europe, and the B ≥ 3 score here is not based on doses the article does not report — it is based on procedures the article reports in full.
C — Educational value★★★★★It is the text that teaches the thing this issue considers central: which sheep competences transfer to the camelid and which produce error. It does so on five documented physiological points, with images of real smears, and declaring each time the species of the source. For a veterinarian seeing their first anaemic alpaca of their career, it is the right reading.
D — Species relevance★★★★★Review entirely dedicated to alpaca and llama, written in a European university clinic on a European case series, with European reference values (Hengrave Burri, Swiss). No Old World datum is passed off as South American camelid. Transferability to Italy is direct.

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

It can be concluded that: in the alpaca and the llama, anaemia from Haemonchus contortus presents a picture that cannot be interpreted with the thresholds and tools of the small ruminant — the animal compensates for a long time, normoblasts circulate even when healthy (0 to 3 per 100 leukocytes in the adult, 0 to 5 in the llama according to Al-Izzi et al. 2004, up to 26 in the cria), the analyser mistakes them for leukocytes and correction with a formula is needed, and the calculated haematocrit may diverge from the centrifuged PCV due to the elliptical shape of the erythrocyte; and that severity thresholds calibrated on the species exist (mild 0.25-0.20; moderate 0.20-0.15; severe 0.15-0.10; fatal < 0.10 L/L).

It cannot be concluded that: this article demonstrates anything — it is a narrative review with no stated search strategy, and every number in it is a second-hand citation for which this card reports the primary source. In particular it cannot be concluded that the blood loss of 50 µL per day per female worm is a camelid datum: the species of the original measurement is not stated. And it cannot be concluded that the final seven-step algorithm has a known diagnostic yield: it has never been validated.

  • Contesto verificato ma non schedato, sulla patologia dell'emoncosi camelide: Edwards EE, Garner BC, Williamson LH, Storey BE, Sakamoto K. Pathology of Haemonchus contortus in New World camelids in the southeastern United States.

  • ⚠️ CRL-A-01 — this same article is already cited there as a second-hand source, for the sample size (25 South American camelids) of the study by Viesselmann et al. 2019a on the ADVIA 2120, which the article catalogued in A-01 did not state in its own abstract. Citing and cataloguing are two different acts: in A-01 Wagener 2024 is a witness, here it is the defendant. It is not a duplication, and it is declared here so that no one has to discover it on their own.
  • CRL-L-01 (this issue) — Hinney et al. 2024. L-01 demonstrates that the worm is resistant and genetically identical to the ovine one; L-02 explains why the host reacts differently. Whoever reads only the first concludes that camelid parasitology is the same as ovine; whoever reads only the second does not know that the anthelmintics are running out.
  • CRL-L-05 (this issue) — Wagener et al. 2021, by the same first and last authors. It is the primary datum on which this review rests for the frequencies of anaemia in the clinic (55 % and 49 %), for the minimum PCV of 0.04 L/L, and for normoblasts in one camelid in three. Whoever cites those numbers must cite L-05, not L-02: here they are second-hand even though the authors are the same.
  • Verified but not catalogued context, on the pathology of camelid haemonchosis: Edwards EE, Garner BC, Williamson LH, Storey BE, Sakamoto K. Pathology of Haemonchus contortus in New World camelids in the southeastern United States. J Vet Diagn Invest 2016;28(2):105-109, DOI 10.1177/1040638716628587, PMID 26965230 (Crossref and Europe PMC, 31/08/2026; full text not accessible — no PMCID). From the abstract: retrospective review from the University of Georgia 2002-2013; ante-mortem egg counts on 30 alpacas correlated negatively with haematocrit, haemoglobin, and erythrocyte count, while total protein was not significantly correlated; at necropsy 55 of 198 camelids infected with H. contortus, with llamas (42.6 %) significantly more affected than alpacas (22.2 %); in 15.7 % of total cases the parasite was the principal cause of death. ⚠️ This is a datum from the southeastern United States, where H. contortus dominates: it does not transfer to European prevalence.
