Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes

  • AQualità scientifica3/5
  • BUtilità pratica3/5
  • CValore didattico4/5
  • DTrasferibilità ai camelidi europei2/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

3 · Autori

3 · Authors

Complete list, three authors, in the form and order of the Crossref record:

Enríquez Añamuro Carlos · Watanabe Watanabe Raquel · Rosadio Alcántara Raúl

None of the three has an ORCID in Crossref.

Three surnames not to be split, and why KT chapter 14 insists (§9). Enríquez Añamuro and Rosadio Alcántara are Spanish double surnames — paternal and maternal — and must be kept whole: «Añamuro C» and «Alcántara R» would be two non-existent people. Watanabe Watanabe is a Japanese-Peruvian double surname whose two elements coincide, and an index that «deduplicated» it would produce «Watanabe R», losing the information. All three copied from the record, not reconstructed.

4 · Affiliazione dell'autore corrispondente

Nota, perché torna in M-05.

4 · Corresponding author's affiliation

Corresponding author: Raúl Rosadio Alcántara, marked with an asterisk, e-mail printed on the article: [email protected].

Note, because it recurs in M-05. Raúl Rosadio Alcántara is also an author of card M-05 of this fascicle, under the name form «Rosadio A., Raúl»: the same researcher, and the same group, working from 2006 (the works the authors cite date from 2006, 2010 and 2012) to 2024 on the same problem — alpaca neonatal enterotoxaemia as a co-infection rather than a pure clostridial disease. It is exactly the case where an ORCID would let one follow a group over time, and where it is missing.

9 · Specie e soggetti

Somma: 19 + 26 + 5 = 50 ✓

9 · Species and subjects

Species: alpaca (Vicugna pacos), Huacaya breed — the domestic species, not the vicuña.

  • 50 pregnant alpacas, clinically healthy, naturally infected with Eimeria spp
  • Age: 3 to 12 years, in three groups: A = 3-4 years (n = 19), B = 5-8 years (n = 26), C = 9-12 years (n = 5). Sum: 19 + 26 + 5 = 50 ✓
  • System: extensive production on natural pasture, with controlled, calendared management and production records (parturition, mating, mortality) kept by the centre
  • Identification: metal ear tags; pregnancy diagnosed by rectal palpation; parturitions expected in December or January

Site: Centro de Investigación y Producción «La Raya» (CIP La Raya) of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano (UNAP), Santa Rosa district, Melgar province, Puno region, Peru.

Altitude: DECLARED — 4200 to 5500 m a.s.l., humid puna ecological belt. The highest in this fascicle and in the whole series.

Climate for the period, as declared: rainy season, minimum 5 °C, maximum 14 °C, annual rainfall 725 mm, relative humidity 61.83 % (attributed by the authors to SENAMHI, printed in the article as «SENAMI», 2022).

Why altitude changes the reading. The Eimeria oocyst must sporulate in the environment to become infective, and sporulation depends on temperature and humidity. At 4200-5500 m, with maxima of 14 °C, sporulation is slower than on a European summer pasture: the authors themselves incubate oocysts at 15 °C because that is the site's mean daytime temperature. The timings of this dynamic do not transfer to an Italian holding. The mechanism — the dam as a peripartum reservoir — does.

Country: Peru, Puno region.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

In clinically healthy pregnant Huacaya alpacas on an extensive high-altitude holding [P], do the weeks around parturition [I], compared with the two weeks before parturition [C], change the frequency and burden of Eimeria spp oocyst shedding, by Eimeria species [O]?

(Framed by the editors from the stated objective: to «elucidar si las madres gestantes son portadoras asintomáticas y fuentes de infección de especies de Eimeria durante el periodo perinatal».)

11 · Disegno dello studio

11 · Study design

Prospective longitudinal observational study, with repeated measures on the same animals over seven weeks: two weeks before parturition, the week of parturition, four weeks after.

Ethical approval: not declared. The article names no committee and no protocol → [TO BE CHECKED IN THE FULL TEXT]. This is an observation on centre-owned animals with rectal faecal sampling, but KT chapter 14 requires the field to state the reason for the absence rather than be left blank: the reason here is that the article is silent, not that approval is unnecessary.

12 · Level of evidence

Prospective longitudinal observational study, single-centre, no control group, with a calculated sample size.

Consequence line for the reader: these numbers describe what 50 alpacas at one Puno research centre shed over seven weeks of one birthing season. The comparison is temporal, within the same animals — which is a strength — but there is no non-pregnant group and no intervention: the rise in shedding after parturition is a temporal association, and attributing it to parturition stress remains the authors' hypothesis.

13 · Standard di reporting pertinente

STROBE (studio di coorte prospettico). Non dichiarato dagli autori.

13 · Applicable reporting standard

STROBE (prospective cohort). Not declared by the authors.

14 · Metodo

    • campionati: 50
  • Campioni: feci (5-10 g) prelevate settimanalmente e direttamente dal retto, conservate in refrigerazione fino all'analisi
  • Sede dell'analisi: Laboratorio de Parasitología, FMV-UNMSM, Lima
  • Statistica: Stata® 17.

14 · Methods

  • Period: December 2018 - March 2019, rainy season
  • Sample size, calculated with WinEpi (Universidad de Zaragoza), from a pilot sample of 200 animals of the same population that had found 198/200 (99 %) positive:
    • proportion formula, finite population of 500 animals, reference proportion 0.99, precision 0.03, confidence 95 % → minimum 43 animals
    • mean formula, finite population 500, 95 % confidence, standard deviation 184.6, accepted absolute error 50 → minimum 48 animals
    • sampled: 50
  • Samples: faeces (5-10 g) taken weekly and directly from the rectum, refrigerated until analysis
  • Parasitological methods: qualitative flotation with saturated sugar solution after Sheather (protocol cited as Foreyt, 2002); quantitative oocysts per gram (opg) by McMaster
  • Species identification: morphometry after Guerrero (1967), Guerrero et al. (1971) and Leguía and Casas (1999), as cited by the authors
  • Sporulation, described in unusual detail: oocysts in a sedimentation cup with distilled water, incubated at 15 °C — explicitly the site's mean daytime temperature in the rainy season — with an Oct-50 50 W aquarium thermostat (Ocean-Aqua, India) and continuous airflow from an EHEIM air400 compressor (Germany), temperature monitored with a digital aquarium thermometer (Control Company, USA)
  • Analysis site: Laboratorio de Parasitología, FMV-UNMSM, Lima
  • Statistics: Stata® 17. Kruskal-Wallis for opg differences between weeks and age groups, with multiple median comparison post hoc; Spearman correlation between opg and age; Poisson regression for prevalence ratios
  • Number of sites: one (CIP La Raya)

A detail worth noticing. The sporulation rig is built from an aquarium thermostat and an aerator. That is not colour: it is why this study is replicable on any holding with a minimal laboratory, and it is more useful, to anyone wanting to repeat it, than a catalogue incubator nobody owns.

15 · Risultati (dati)

Specie di Eimeria trovate: quattro. E. punoensis, E. alpacae, E. lamae e E. macusaniensis.

Confronti statistici dichiarati:

  • Fra gruppi d'età: differenza significativa fra A (3-4 anni) e B (5-8 anni), p = 0,0123.

  • eliminazioni doppie e triple di specie diverse — «datos no publicados»
  • «pobre estado de carnes» delle madri, cioè scarsa condizione corporea — «datos no registrados»

E. macusaniensis and E. lamae: minimal burdens before and after parturition. No alpaca shed E. macusaniensis in the two weeks before parturition; 3/50 (6 %) began at parturition, with burdens below 50 opg that stayed at that level to the fourth week post-partum.

Total burdens of the 50 alpacas, by week (from the discussion, referring to Cuadro 2):

Time pointTotal opg of the 50 dams
2 weeks pre-partum6000
at parturition8500
post-partum week 115,600
post-partum week 223,600
post-partum week 318,750
post-partum week 416,150

Editors' arithmetic check, which resolves an apparent contradiction. The discussion speaks of «altas cargas de ooquistes, principalmente, de E. alpacae (2950 opg) y E. punoensis (5500 opg)» at parturition, while the Results give 115.7 and 110 opg for the same moment. The two sets look incompatible, and for one of the two species they are. E. punoensis: 5500 / 50 = 110, exactly the declared mean, so 5500 is a sum over the 50 dams. E. alpacae: 2950 / 50 ≈ 59, against the 115.7 of the Results (115.7 × 50 = 5785, not 2950). The totals agree with each other: 2950 + 5500 = 8450, and the declared total at parturition is 8500 opg, with the residual ~50 opg attributable to E. lamae and E. macusaniensis; with a mean of 115.7 the sum for the two species would instead be (115.7 + 110) × 50 ≈ 11,285 opg. The two figures for E. alpacae do not agree, and the article's tables (Cuadro 1 and 2) are not readable as text: the card does not choose between 59 and 115.7 and reports 115.7 as declared in the Results. The article does not explain the shift from totals to means, and anyone citing «2950 opg» as one dam's burden would be fifty-fold out.

Declared statistical comparisons:

  • Between age groups: significant difference between A (3-4 years) and B (5-8 years), p = 0.0123. Younger dams (3-4 years) shed higher burdens of E. alpacae and E. punoensis than the two older groups
  • Correlation between opg and age: Spearman's rho = −0.0538, p = 0.0468. The authors call it «una correlación negativa muy baja», which is accurate: the sign is negative and statistically distinguishable from zero, but the magnitude is negligible
  • Between time points: difference between the two pre-partum weeks and all post-partum weeks (p < 0.05); between the week before parturition and the week of parturition (p = 0.0313) and all post-partum weeks (p < 0.001); between the week of parturition and post-partum weeks 2 (p = 0.007) and 3 (p = 0.0277)
  • Between species: statistically similar burdens for E. alpacae and E. punoensis in the two pre-partum weeks, and for E. macusaniensis and E. lamae; from parturition to post-partum week 4 a statistical difference between E. alpacae and E. punoensis appears
  • Poisson regression: animals with E. punoensis showed 6.5 times the prevalence of those parasitised by E. alpacae (p < 0.001; 95 % CI 2.33-18.13)

⚠️ A result this card reports and does not interpret. The authors write that «los animales con E. macusaniensis y E. lamae presentaron un 0.1 % de prevalencia en comparación con E. alpacae (p<0.001; IC95 % 0.001-0.003)». The sentence mixes a percentage and a prevalence ratio, and the confidence interval (0.001-0.003) is consistent with a ratio, not a percentage. Cuadro 3 would clarify, and it is published as an image → [TO BE CHECKED IN THE FULL TEXT]. The card neither rewrites the authors' sentence nor guesses its meaning.

⚠️ Contradiction between abstract and results, found by the editors. The abstract (Spanish and English) says the percentage of dams shedding E. alpacae and E. punoensis «se incrementó desde la segunda semana posparto». Pre-partum and post-partum are not the same thing, and in a study whose subject is exactly when shedding rises, the difference is the result. The card follows the Results — consistent with the discussion, which speaks of an increase «desde la segunda semana preparto» — and flags that the abstract, which is what almost everyone will read, says the opposite.

Data the authors cite as «unpublished» or «unrecorded», reported here as such and not as results:

  • 28/30 crías analysed at the end of the study (day 28) were positive, with a mean burden of 446.2 opg of the three small eimerias — «datos no publicados»
  • double and triple shedding of different species — «datos no publicados»
  • «pobre estado de carnes», i.e. poor body condition, of the dams — «datos no registrados»

Why these three must be isolated. Practically, the datum on 28/30 crías is the most interesting thing in the article: it would close the loop between dam and offspring. But it is declared unpublished, hence not peer-reviewed, without described methods and unverifiable. KT chapter 14 (§5) is firm: a reported datum does not become a result because it sits in a peer-reviewed paper. It remains the authors' preview.

16 · Authors' interpretation

Attributed, not merged with the data.

The authors' four conclusions, in full:

Note the conditional — serían, no serían — and the adverb aparentemente: the authors do not claim to have demonstrated transmission, and the card respects their register.

The authors hypothesise that the rise in shedding through post-partum week 4 is due to «un desbalance fisiológico y/o hormonal por el parto», i.e. reactivation of immature stages from parturition-stress immune impairment, citing Roth (1985), Taylor and Catchpole (1994), Kehrli et al. (1999) and Taylor et al. (2010).

The authors place the work inside a specific model: alpaca neonatal enterotoxaemia «no sería exclusivamente producto de infecciones clostridiales, sino, de un síndrome asociativo (coinfección) predominante de Eimeria spp y Clostridium perfringens» (attributed to Palacios et al., 2006, and Rosadio et al., 2012). That model is what this group has pursued for nearly two decades (from the 2006 works to 2024), and it is why card M-05 sits in the same fascicle.

The authors stress that the peak shedding period — post-partum weeks two and three — «coincide con la edad de mayor susceptibilidad de las crías» (attributed to Rosadio et al., 2010).

The authors note the absence of clinical signs in the dams despite mixed infections, which for them «corrobora que las madres gestantes son portadoras asintomáticas y diseminadoras de Eimeria spp en el periodo perinatal».

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

17 · Limitations declared by the authors

The article has no «Limitations» section and declares no limitations of its own. The only explicit caution is the conditional mood of the conclusions (§16), which is a real caution but not a limitations statement.

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

  5. Riassunto e Risultati in contraddizione su preparto/postparto (§15).
  8. Nessuna dichiarazione di conflitti (§20).

18 · Limitations added by the editors

  1. The dam-to-cría link is not measured in this study. No cría was followed in the article: the 28/30 datum is declared unpublished (§15). Conclusions 3 and 4 are therefore inferences from one side of the chain only, which is why the authors use the conditional.
  2. Conclusion 4 is the most fragile, and it concerns the most dangerous species. E. macusaniensis was found in 3 dams out of 50 (6 %), at burdens below 50 opg. Concluding that dams are not a source of E. macusaniensis for neonates means drawing a negative conclusion from 3 positives out of 50, in a species that is known to be shed intermittently and whose large, heavy oocysts are recovered less well by sugar flotation than the small eimerias. Failure to detect is not absence of shedding, and the article does not discuss the method's sensitivity for this species.
  3. No ethical approval declared (§11).
  4. One centre, one season, one breed. CIP La Raya is a university research centre with records and calendared management: it is not the average family holding, which the authors themselves describe in the introduction as plots under 100 hectares with 50-100 animals. The shedding measured here is that of a population managed better than average.
  5. Abstract and Results contradict each other on pre-/post-partum (§15).
  6. No confidence intervals on the burdens, which are described with means for a variable — oocyst counts — that is notoriously highly skewed, so much so that the authors correctly use non-parametric tests to compare them. Describing with means and comparing with medians is inconsistent, and both coexist in the article.
  7. The Spearman correlation of −0.0538 with p = 0.0468 is not a useful result. It is a p-value just under threshold on an effect of practically zero magnitude; and on weekly repeated measures of the same 50 animals, the independence the test requires is doubtful. The age-group difference (p = 0.0123) is the solid finding; the correlation is not.
  8. No conflicts declaration (§20).

23 · Valutazione a stelle

21 · What is missing against the reporting standard (STROBE)

  • Design not named (item 4)
  • Sample size: present, and calculated twice, with parameters and pilot source (item 10). The most transparent calculation in the fascicle, and it deserves acknowledgement
  • Missing: handling of missing data (item 12): across seven weekly samplings of 50 animals one would expect at least one sample not obtained; the article does not say. 50 × 7 = 350 samples expected, and the actual number analysed never appears → [TO BE CHECKED IN THE FULL TEXT]
  • Missing: how repeated measures were accounted for (item 12): the tests used treat observations as independent, but they are seven measures on the same 50 animals
  • Missing: measures of precision on the burdens (item 16)
  • Missing: participant flow diagram (item 13): 500 animals in the population, 200 in the pilot, 50 studied — how one gets from each to the next is not shown
  • Missing: ethics and conflicts statements
  • Abstract/results discordance (item 2: the abstract must give a balanced and faithful account)

22 · Association's editorial comment

Anyone raising alpacas in Europe knows the problem from the wrong end: the cría that stops growing, the diarrhoea that will not respond, and the faecal count run on the cría. This article looks from the other side — the dam — and says two things that change the calendar.

First: dam shedding does not peak at parturition, but in the second and third weeks after. Across the 50 dams in total: 6000 opg two weeks before parturition, 8500 at parturition, 23,600 in post-partum week 2. If you reason the usual way — «I clean the birthing paddock before they give birth» — you intervene at the wrong moment. The moment the environment loads is afterwards, and it coincides, as the authors note, with the age at which the cría becomes most susceptible.

Second, finer and more useful: the eimerias do not all behave alike. E. punoensis and E. alpacae — the «small», less pathogenic ones — are everywhere and increasing. E. macusaniensis, the one that kills, is barely shed by the dams in this study, and none shed it before parturition. If that holds — and §18 explains why it may not — it means the source of E. macusaniensis for the cría is not the dam, but the pasture, the pen, the oocyst surviving in the environment from one season to the next. Those are two completely different control strategies: treat the dams, or manage the ground.

Chapter 20 of our KT covers E. macusaniensis and the limits of protocols borrowed from sheep. This article adds the piece missing in English: the temporal dynamic, measured week by week, in dams on extensive holdings, which nobody in Europe has measured because nobody in Europe has 50 pregnant alpacas on natural pasture available for seven weeks.

One caution worth saying aloud: the abstract of this article contradicts its own results on pre-/post-partum (§15). Anyone citing it from the abstract alone — that is, almost everyone — cites the opposite of what the authors measured. It is the best argument we know for the house rule: you read the full text, or you do not write the card.

23 · Star rating

A · Scientific quality: ★★★☆☆ — Observational study with a declared sample size justified by two explicit calculations, clear selection criteria, parasitological methods described down to the thermostat model, appropriate non-parametric analysis and Poisson regression: a full step 3. It does not rise to 4 — reserved for controlled or ARRIVE-consistent designs — and does not fall despite the abstract/results contradiction, because the body of the article is internally coherent and verifiable.

B · Practical usefulness: ★★★☆☆ — Offers a replicable procedure (Sheather + McMaster, sporulation at 15 °C with aquarium equipment) and a precise management pointer about when the environment loads. It does not rise to 4 because the most useful conclusion — the dam as source for the cría — rests on data declared unpublished, and because no intervention was tested.

C · Teaching value: ★★★★☆ — Explains a pathophysiological mechanism clearly and verifiably: peripartum reactivation, why the cría's susceptibility window falls where it does, and the behavioural difference between the «small» eimerias and E. macusaniensis. And, inadvertently, it teaches why one does not trust an abstract.

D · Transferability to European camelids: ★★☆☆☆ — Data on alpacas — the right species — but in a setting far from Europe's: natural high pasture at 4200-5500 m, rainy season, 5-14 °C, research-centre herds in an extensive system. The temporal sequence of shedding is plausibly general; the burdens, dates and sporulation speed are not.

24 · Bottom line

You may conclude that: in 50 pregnant Huacaya alpacas at a Puno centre at 4200-5500 m, dams reach parturition already infected — E. punoensis 49/50 (98 %), E. alpacae 43/50 (86 %) — and oocyst shedding rises significantly from pre-partum through every post-partum week, peaking in total across the 50 dams in post-partum week 2 (23,600 opg), i.e. when the cría is most susceptible.

You may not conclude that: dams infect the crías — no cría was followed in this article, and the datum suggesting it is declared unpublished. And above all you may not conclude that dams are not a source of E. macusaniensis: that conclusion rests on 3 positives out of 50, with a flotation method whose sensitivity for this species' large oocysts is not discussed in the article.

Written 31/08/2026 · version 1.0. Full text read on the SciELO Peru version (S1609-91172024000100017). Not read: Cuadro 1, Cuadro 2, Cuadro 3 and the three Figures, published as images. The Cuadro values reported in §15 are those repeated in the body text; those existing only in the Cuadros are flagged.

What was not searched: whether the data on the 30 crías, declared unpublished in 2024, have since been published; studies confirming or refuting the low E. macusaniensis shedding in dams; literature on the sensitivity of flotation techniques for E. macusaniensis oocysts, which would be decisive for assessing conclusion 4 and which this article does not address.
