Valutazione redazionale, quattro assi separatiEditorial rating, four separate axes

  • AQualità scientifica2/5
  • BUtilità clinica3/5
  • CValore didattico4/5
  • DRilevanza per la specie4/5
Che cosa misurano i quattro assi
A · Qualità scientifica
La domanda è ben posta? I metodi sono dichiarati? La statistica è appropriata? La conclusione sta dentro i dati?
B · Utilità clinica
Serve a chi ha l’animale davanti, oggi.
C · Valore didattico

What the four axes measure
A · Scientific quality
Is the question well posed? Are the methods stated? Is the statistics appropriate? Does the conclusion stay within the data?
B · Clinical usefulness
Useful to whoever has the animal in front of them, today.
C · Teaching value
Does it teach something to those studying the subject?
D · Relevance to the species
Is it really about camelids, or a result borrowed from another species?

Each axis is worth 1 to 5 stars and carries its written reason. The stars in the index are the rounded average of the four.

Commento dell'associazione

Riquadro redazionale — CRS/CRL, 31/08/2026.

Association's commentary

Editorial box — CRS/CRL, 31/08/2026.

The result of this record is a distance, and it is the distance that should be taken away. The reference expert recommendation (record CRL-N-04) says: an annual trim for all at shearing, plus periodic examination, plus two to three times a year for animals on soft ground or with a corkscrew nail. What 53 Hungarian breeders actually do: 43.4 % once a year, 30.2 % twice, 22.6 % every few months, 1.9 % monthly. In other words more than half trim two or more times a year, that is, more than the recommendation sets as a baseline — and neither the recommendation nor the practice rests on a measurement.

Why it does not rest on a measurement: the gap, stated precisely. The queries run for this fascicle found no study measuring the growth rate of the camelid toenail, none comparing trimming intervals against a clinical outcome, and no validated lameness scale for South American camelids. This is not a gap this record infers: the authors themselves write it — «specific European guidelines for alpaca shearing and hoof care are limited». It follows that every «every six months» printed in a popular leaflet is a repeated opinion, and whoever repeats it ought to say so.

On the substrate, the sentence not to exceed. The authors write that concrete «may increase the risk of lameness and injuries if not properly managed», and on the same page declare that they did not analyse any association between housing conditions and outcomes. It is the only substrate-lameness statement in any source of this fascicle, and it is a hypothesis. From the other end, record CRL-N-04 says the apparent opposite — that it is soft ground, not hard, that lets the nail outgrow its wear and demands more trimming. The two statements do not contradict each other and must be held together: soft ground produces excessive nail growth (a trimming problem), hard flooring would produce injury and lameness (a lesion problem). They are two different mechanisms on two different outcomes. Neither has been measured in the species. Anyone writing «concrete causes pododermatitis in the alpaca» is conjecturing — and anyone writing «alpacas do well on hard ground because it wears the nail» is conjecturing the opposite on the same quantity of evidence, namely none.

Actual foot pathology: how little there is, stated with its number. The only work emerging from these queries that examines and classifies foot lesions including alpacas is Swiss and concerns a zoo: Hoby S, Steiner A, Kuhnert P, Furtado Jost R, Guthruf S, Schönbächler K, Alsaaod M. «Foot health and prevalence of Dichelobacter nodosus in 11 ungulate species at Berne Animal Park» (parallel German title: «Klauengesundheit und Prävalenz von Dichelobacter nodosus bei 11 Huftierarten im Tierpark Bern»), Schweiz Arch Tierheilkd 2020;162(11):675-681, DOI 10.17236/sat00277, PMID 33140726 — language of the source: English, in a Swiss journal with a parallel German title; not open access, isOpenAccess: N, no PMCID: only the abstract of this work has been read, and its numbers are reported here as such. In 53 animals of 11 species at Berne Animal Park, over 13 months in 2018-2019, with a 0-5 lesion score and interdigital swabs of all four feet analysed by real-time PCR for D. nodosus: foot lesions in 5 species — 3/5 muskoxen, 7/12 Cretan wild goats, 2/3 dwarf goats (mainly white line disease) and 9/10 European bison (interdigital dermatitis); there were three alpacas, and one of the three had chorioptic mange of the heel area. No animal showed clinical signs of footrot (score 0) and no sample was positive for D. nodosus, neither benign (aprB2) nor virulent (aprV2). ⚠️ Three alpacas, in a zoo, in Switzerland: this is all that exists in the way of classified foot examination in the species, on the evidence of these searches. Anyone building a prevalence of chorioptic foot mange in alpacas on that «1 in 3» is multiplying a single animal by a hundred.

A methodological remark that concerns us directly. This article declares having used Claude AI (Sonnet 3.5) for targeted literature searching, taking responsibility for it. It is a correct and still rare declaration, and it is the first this fascicle has met. It should be read alongside one fact: the full text of this article was read in its entirety by us, and the four arithmetic problems in field 15 were found by redoing the sums, not by trusting the percentages. An AI-assisted literature search and a hand-checked arithmetic verification are not in conflict: they are the two halves of the same job, and this collection exists so that the second half is not skipped.

What canNOT be concluded from here. That Hungarian alpacas are lame in 5 % of cases — the denominator of that percentage is not 53 and is not printed. That concrete harms the alpaca's foot — the hypothesis is the authors' and nobody has tested it. That trimming twice a year is better than once — no outcome was measured. And that these figures hold for Italy: they are 53 Hungarian keepers, largely peri-urban and hobbyist, in the summer of 2023.

1 · Titolo originale

«Alpaca Keeping in Hungary: The First Nationwide Survey»

«Alpaca Keeping in Hungary: The First Nationwide Survey»

Full, untruncated title, in the form of the Crossref record (queried 31/08/2026; cr-10.3390_ani16081209.json), identical in Europe PMC apart from the trailing period.

Language of the source: English. Europe PMC → language: eng. ⚠️ The language of the instrument is not declared. The questionnaire was administered to 53 Hungarian breeders and is attached as supplementary material; the article does not say in which language it was written. That it was in Hungarian is plausible and is not stated → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT] of the supplementary material. This is not a quibble: the wording of questions in one language and their rendering in another is exactly where a survey loses or gains meaning, and §107.3 of the KT requires declaring the language of what one reads.

3 · Autori

  • Centre for Animal Welfare, University of Veterinary Medicine, 1078 Budapest, Ungheria: Láng, Jurkovich.
  • András Adorján Mobile Veterinary Practice, 2117 Isaszeg, Ungheria: Adorján — una pratica veterinaria mobile privata.

3 · Authors

Complete list, three authors, in the order and form of the Crossref record, identical to Europe PMC's authorString («Láng V, Adorján A, Jurkovich V.»):

Láng Viktória · Adorján András · Jurkovich Viktor (ORCID 0000-0002-6019-3508).

No ORCID is registered for Láng or Adorján, in Crossref or in PubMed.

⚠️ A trap in this record, which this record met. In the PMC13113044 fullTextXML the contributor group contains four names: to the three authors is added Phillips Clive J. C., with the attribute contrib-type="editor" and the role «Academic Editor». He is the academic editor assigned by MDPI to the manuscript, not an author. Anyone copying the <contrib> list without reading the attribute would publish a fourth, non-existent author — which is exactly how the false attributions described in chapter 14 §9.3 come into being. Crossref, which is the prescribed source for author names, returns three.

5 · Rivista · anno · volume · fascicolo · pagine

Animals, 2026, volume 16, fascicolo 8, articolo 1209.

5 · Journal · year · volume · issue · pages

Animals, 2026, volume 16, issue 8, article 1209.

⚠️ As in record CRL-N-02: 1209 is the article number, not a page (Europe PMC pageInfo: "1209"; Crossref records no page range because the journal does not use them). The correct form is 2026;16(8):1209.

Date: Crossref issued 16 April 2026; Europe PMC firstPublicationDate 2026-04-16. ⚠️ The data are from 2023. The questionnaire was administered between May and July 2023, and the article appears almost three years later: the authors declare this as a limitation (field 17).

7 · Journal status

Verified on 31/08/2026. Animals: ISSN 2076-2615 (Europe PMC records the same value for ISSN and ESSN: born-electronic journal); NLM ID 101635614; publisher MDPI AG. PubMed: yes. DOAJ: yes — doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:2076-2615 → 1 result, publisher declared as MDPI AG. OpenAlex: 25,525 works indexed, is_oa: true, is_in_doaj: true.

⚠️ A note chapter 14 §7 requires, and it must be written precisely. Animals is an MDPI open access journal with an author-side publication fee, indexed in PubMed and in DOAJ, with very high publication volumes (over 25,000 works). It is not a predatory journal and does not appear on any watch list: it is properly indexed where it should be, and it is the venue for a substantial share of the world's literature on alpaca welfare (the same journal hosts the 2024 Australian national survey and the 2025 welfare review cited in field 26). Publication volume is not in itself a judgement on an individual article, and it is why this record measures this article against STROBE in field 21 rather than trusting the venue.

8 · Licenza dell'articolo

Creative Commons Attribuzione 4.0 (CC BY 4.0).

8 · Article licence

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). Crossref records https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/; Europe PMC reports license: cc by; the PMC deposit contains the same URL. Read in Crossref, Europe PMC and the deposit on 31/08/2026.

This record may reproduce figures and tables with attribution, being CC BY. It chooses not to: this article's percentages need their denominators more than they need images, and the denominators are in field 15.

9 · Specie e soggetti

  • Distribuzione: aree urbane 34,0 %, piccole città 37,7 %, villaggi 17,0 %, ambiente rurale/agricolo 11,3 %.

9 · Species and subjects

⚠️ The unit of analysis is the keeper, not the animal. This must be fixed first, because every percentage in this record answers the question «how many keepers» and not «how many alpacas».

  • 53 Hungarian alpaca keepers completed the questionnaire between May and July 2023.
  • The keepers report a total of 266 alpacas (Vicugna pacos).
  • Type: Huacaya in 69.8 % of herds, Suri in 17.0 %, mixed herds in 13.2 %.
  • No animal was visited, weighed, examined or photographed. There is no veterinarian looking at a foot in this study.
  • Distribution: urban areas 34.0 %, small towns 37.7 %, villages 17.0 %, farm/rural environment 11.3 %. Highest concentration in central Hungary (Pest County); no respondent in Budapest.
  • Purpose of keeping: hobby 54.7 %, supplementary income 32.1 %, animal-assisted services 3.8 %. No respondent indicates alpaca keeping as a primary source of income, and none indicates meat production.
  • For how long: 75.5 % started within the last five years.

⚠️ The response rate cannot be calculated and the authors declare it: Hungary has no register of camelid keepers, and the questionnaire was distributed primarily through Facebook breeder groups and professional networks.

10 · Domanda clinica (PICO)

10 · Clinical question (PICO)

The design does not allow a clinical PICO: there is no intervention, no comparison, no measured health outcome. The article's question:

  • P — alpaca keepers in Hungary.
  • I/C — none: it is a description.
  • O — declared practices of housing, feeding, health management and foot care, and reported health problems.

As a question, for the part relevant here: how often and by whom are alpaca toenails trimmed in a European country, on what substrate do the animals live, and how often do keepers report lameness?

11 · Disegno dello studio

11 · Study design

Cross-sectional nationwide questionnaire survey, anonymous, voluntary and self-reported. Online questionnaire of 55 questions, single-choice, multiple-choice, short-answer and linear scale, in three sections (keeper information; housing and management; health and welfare). Designed on the basis of earlier surveys conducted in Germany and the United Kingdom.

⚠️ The questionnaire was neither piloted nor formally validated: the authors declare it was «reviewed before distribution», evaluated by an experienced alpaca keeper and informally commented on in online groups, with minor adjustments. Analysis by descriptive statistics (Excel), plus Fisher's exact tests, Kruskal-Wallis and logistic regressions (Python 3, scipy, statsmodels) on variables that do not concern the foot.

12 · Level of evidence

Evidence from a cross-sectional questionnaire survey, self-reported, with non-probabilistic convenience sampling and a response rate that cannot be calculated.

Consequence for the reader: these numbers say what 53 people declared they do in Hungary in the summer of 2023. They are useful for knowing how dispersed practice is and which practice predominates, and they are the only European datum of this kind that emerged from the queries run for this fascicle. They say nothing about what is correct to do, because no outcome was measured: not one foot examined, not one lameness diagnosed, not one toenail measured. Anyone reading «43.4 % trim once a year» and concluding «once a year is enough» is turning a description into a recommendation.

13 · Relevant reporting standard

STROBE (observational studies), from the closed list of chapter 14 §3.5, as the closest guideline.

⚠️ It must be said precisely, as already in CRL-I-01 and CRL-N-02: the closed list of chapter 14 contains no guideline for questionnaire surveys. The specific one exists in the literature (CHERRIES, for online surveys) and is not on the house list. This record uses STROBE while declaring that it covers only part of the problem — sampling, missing data, measures of precision — and not the items proper to an online survey: recruitment on platforms, prevention of duplicate responses, partial completion, question order and wording. If the gap matters, it is fixed in the chapter 14 grid, for all records, not here. The authors declare no guideline.

14 · Metodo

  • Trattamento dei dati: «Incomplete responses were excluded from the analysis, and only fully completed questionnaires were included in the final dataset. Missing data were not imputed.»
  • Disponibilità dei dati: «The data presented in this study are available upon request.» Non depositati.
  • Uso dichiarato di strumenti di intelligenza artificiale, nei ringraziamenti: «During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used Claude AI (3.5 Sonnet) for the purposes of targeted search of literature, and Grammarly.com to correct grammatical and spelling errors. The authors have reviewed and edited the output and take full responsibility for the content of this publication.»

14 · Method

Read in the full text (ft-PMC13113044.xml).

  • Collection: anonymous online questionnaire, May-July 2023, distributed primarily through Facebook breeder groups and professional networks, «with no additional formal distribution channels used».
  • Consent: voluntary and informed before completion; no identifiable personal data; anonymous identifiers assigned to respondents.
  • Ethics: formal approval not required (no animal experimentation); the questionnaire was approved by the Scientific and Innovation Committee of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest.
  • Data handling: «Incomplete responses were excluded from the analysis, and only fully completed questionnaires were included in the final dataset. Missing data were not imputed.» ⚠️ How many incomplete responses were excluded is not declared → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]: the datum is not in the article. These are participants who disappear before the denominator.
  • Data availability: «The data presented in this study are available upon request.» Not deposited.
  • Declared use of artificial intelligence tools, in the acknowledgments: «During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used Claude AI (3.5 Sonnet) for the purposes of targeted search of literature, and Grammarly.com to correct grammatical and spelling errors. The authors have reviewed and edited the output and take full responsibility for the content of this publication.» It is reported here because it is a statement of method, not an acknowledgment: see field 22.

15 · Risultati (dati)

Solo numeri, dal testo pieno. Denominatore 53 rispondenti salvo dove indicato diversamente.

Frequenza dichiarata% (articolo)conteggio [redazione]
Una volta l'anno43,4 %[23/53]
Due volte l'anno30,2 %[16/53]
Ogni pochi mesi22,6 %[12/53]
Ogni mese1,9 %[1/53]

Chi% (articolo)conteggio [redazione]
Specialisti professionali50,9 %[27/53]
Gli allevatori stessi35,8 %[19/53]
Veterinari18,9 %[10/53]

Frequenza%[redazione]

15 · Results (data)

Numbers only, from the full text. Denominator 53 respondents unless stated otherwise. Absolute counts in square brackets are editorial calculations from the printed percentages, which the article does not convert into numbers.

Foot care — declared trimming frequency.

Declared frequency% (article)count [editorial]
Once a year43.4 %[23/53]
Twice a year30.2 %[16/53]
Every few months22.6 %[12/53]
Monthly1.9 %[1/53]

⚠️ Editorial arithmetic check, first. The four categories sum to 98.1 %, i.e. 52 of 53 respondents. One respondent is placed in no category and the article does not say whether they did not answer or do not trim at all → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. This is not irrelevant: if that respondent never trims, it is the only datum on absent foot care in the whole survey.

Who performs the trimming.

Who% (article)count [editorial]
Professional specialists50.9 %[27/53]
The breeders themselves35.8 %[19/53]
Veterinarians18.9 %[10/53]

⚠️ Editorial arithmetic check, second. The three categories sum to 105.6 %, i.e. 56 answers from 53 respondents: the question allowed multiple answers, and the article does not declare it → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The correct reading is therefore «at least three breeders use more than one provider», not «the three categories are mutually exclusive». The clinically relevant datum holds regardless: only about one breeder in five involves a veterinarian in foot care.

Shearing — which is, according to record CRL-N-04, the window in which feet and teeth are examined:

Frequency%[editorial]
Once a year, in spring90.6 %[48/53]
At other times5.7 %[3/53]
Twice a year1.9 %[1/53]
Never1.9 %[1/53]

Year-round free-range with sheltered areas67.9 %[36/53]
Semi-closed systems17.0 %[9/53]
Seasonal grazing7.5 %[4/53]
Year-round closed housingno respondent[0/53]
Year-round pasture access«approximately 68 %»[~36/53]

⚠️ Editorial arithmetic check, third. The three housing-system categories sum to 92.4 %, i.e. 48 of 53 respondents: five are unaccounted for → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT].

Reported health problems — and here the denominator changes.

Reported problemprinted %
Parasitic infections45.0 %
Digestive and respiratory disease16.7 %
Injuries13.3 %
Sudden death10.0 %
Lameness5.0 %
Abortion5.0 %
Fleece-related problems5.0 %

⚠️ Editorial arithmetic check, fourth — and it is the one that changes the reading of the most important line for this record. These seven percentages sum to exactly 100.0 %, which is impossible if the denominator were 53 respondents (each can report more than one problem, and the sum would exceed 100 %). They are instead perfectly consistent with a denominator of 60 mentions: 27, 10, 8, 6, 3, 3, 3 = 60. It follows that «5.0 % lameness» plausibly means 3 mentions out of 60 reported problems, not «5 % of farms have lame animals». ⚠️ The article does not print the denominator of this series → [TO BE CHECKED AGAINST THE FULL TEXT]. The reconstruction above is an editorial calculation based on the internal consistency of the percentages, not a statement by the authors, and this record does not use it as if it were a datum: it uses the percentage as the article prints it, and warns that its denominator is not 53.

Other context figures relevant to foot care. Daily observation of animals 84.9 %; no records kept 20.6 % (as printed in the full text, §3.4; see below); veterinary services locally available 79.2 %, reachable only at a distance 11.3 %, difficult to access 9.4 %; ⚠️ 11.3 % have never consulted a veterinarian. Post-mortem examination never requested by 66.0 %.

⚠️ Editorial arithmetic check. The 20.6 % corresponds to no count out of 53 respondents: 10/53 = 18.9 %, 11/53 = 20.8 %. The other percentages in the same sentence of the article all hold over 53 (memory 15.1 % = 8/53; treatments 50.9 % = 27/53; pregnancies 28.3 % = 15/53; diseases 24.5 % = 13/53; deaths 17.0 % = 9/53). The article does not print the count, so the item either has a different, undeclared denominator or is a misprint (11/53 would give 20.8 %): the full text does not allow a decision, and this card reports the figure as printed, declaring it discordant.

«In addition, the use of concrete flooring systems on some farms (24.5%) may increase the risk of lameness and injuries if not properly managed.»

«May increase … if not properly managed.»

«In addition, no analysis was conducted to examine potential associations between care frequency and housing conditions, which may influence welfare outcomes. Therefore, these findings should be interpreted in a descriptive rather than normative context.»

«However, specific European guidelines for alpaca shearing and hoof care are limited, and the present study did not assess compliance with standardized protocols.»

16 · Authors' interpretation

Explicitly attributed, from the full text, and kept separate from field 15.

On the substrate — this is the central statement for this record, and it must be quoted in full because its form matters more than its content:

«In addition, the use of concrete flooring systems on some farms (24.5%) may increase the risk of lameness and injuries if not properly managed.»

«May increase … if not properly managed.» It is a conditional hypothesis, doubly conditioned, and the authors have not tested it. They write so on the same page:

«In addition, no analysis was conducted to examine potential associations between care frequency and housing conditions, which may influence welfare outcomes. Therefore, these findings should be interpreted in a descriptive rather than normative context.»

On care frequency: «Shearing and hoof care frequency also play a key role in welfare management»; more than 90 % of respondents shear annually, «consistent with animal welfare recommendations and previous studies». And immediately after, the point that closes the circle of this whole fascicle:

«However, specific European guidelines for alpaca shearing and hoof care are limited, and the present study did not assess compliance with standardized protocols.»

There are no specific European guidelines for alpaca foot care, and the study did not measure adherence to any protocol. This is a statement by the authors, and it coincides with what this fascicle found independently (records CRL-N-04 and field 22 below).

On pasture access: approximately 68 % of farms ensure year-round access, «which may support welfare under appropriate management conditions»; but «the present study did not assess pasture quality, stocking density, or seasonal variations in forage availability».

⚠️ Note what the authors do not claim. They do not claim that concrete causes lameness. They do not claim that one trimming frequency is better than another. They do not claim that the Hungarian sector has a foot problem. Every time these numbers are cited normatively — «alpacas should be trimmed twice a year», «concrete causes lameness» — the citation says more than the source.

17 · Limiti dichiarati dagli autori

Citati, non riassunti. L'articolo ha una sezione «5. Limitations» dedicata:

  1. «First, participation in the survey was voluntary, which may have introduced self-selection bias, as more engaged or motivated alpaca keepers were more likely to respond.»
  2. «Second, the data were based on self-reported information, which may not always accurately reflect actual management practices. Furthermore, reported disease data were not diagnostically confirmed and should therefore be interpreted with caution.»
  3. «In addition, self-assessed knowledge levels may not accurately reflect actual expertise.»
  4. «Third, although the sample size (n = 53) is reasonable given the estimated size of the alpaca-keeping sector in Hungary, it may not fully capture the diversity of existing practices.»
  5. «Finally, the survey was conducted in 2023, and management practices may have changed since then.»

17 · Limitations declared by the authors

Quoted, not summarised. The article has a dedicated «5. Limitations» section:

In the methods, three further limitations are declared outside the dedicated section: the response rate cannot be calculated and representativeness cannot be fully determined; distribution via online communities may have introduced bias towards the more active and engaged respondents; and the questionnaire was neither piloted nor formally validated.

18 · Limiti aggiunti dalla redazione

18 · Limitations added by the editorial team

  1. ⚠️ No animal was examined. This is a survey of people. It contains not one foot looked at, not one lameness score, not one nail measured. Any statement about «the foot health of Hungarian alpacas» resting on this work is exchanging what keepers declare they do for what happens to the animals.
  2. Reported lameness is not a diagnosis, as the authors themselves declare in limitation 2, and it is reported by a keeper who in 11.3 % of cases has never consulted a veterinarian and in 66.0 % never requests a post-mortem. It is a perception, counted.
  3. The four arithmetic problems in field 15 — one respondent missing from the trimming frequency, undeclared multiple answers on who trims, five respondents missing from the housing systems, no printed denominator on the health problems — are all solvable by the authors in one line, and none is solvable by the reader.
  4. Trimming frequency is a practice, not an outcome. Nothing in this study links the declared frequency to nail health, and the authors expressly declare that they did not examine the association between care frequency and housing conditions.
  5. «Concrete flooring systems» is not defined. It is not known whether the concrete is the resting surface or only a service alley, nor for how many hours a day, nor whether it is covered with bedding — which is the variable that, according to the species' welfare literature, would make the difference (field 26). The category underpinning the article's only substrate-lameness hypothesis is the least defined in the questionnaire.
  6. The geographic sample is skewed: highest concentration in Pest County, no respondent in Budapest, and 71.7 % of keepers in urban areas or small towns. A peri-urban hobby sector is not a livestock sector, and its surfaces are not the same.
  7. Three years between collection and publication, in a sector where 75.5 % of respondents had started within the last five years — that is, a sector whose composition changes year on year.
  8. No data deposited: available «upon request».
  9. Two of the three authors belong to the institution that funded the work (field 19). It is declared and entirely ordinary for an internal research fund; it should still be read.

19 · Finanziamento

Dichiarato. Il deposito PMC contiene un funding-statement esplicito: «VJ was supported by the Strategic Research Fund of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest (grant No.: SRF-003).»

19 · Funding

Declared. The PMC deposit contains an explicit funding-statement: «VJ was supported by the Strategic Research Fund of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest (grant No.: SRF-003).» Crossref consistently records the funder University of Veterinary Medicine (ROR 03vayv672) with award number SRF-003.

⚠️ The funding concerns a single author (Jurkovich), not the study as a whole. No separate «Funding» section appears in the article's text: the declaration is in the structured metadata of the deposit and in Crossref. Read there, not inferred.

20 · Conflitti di interesse

Dichiarati: «The authors declare no conflicts of interest. The funders had no role in the design of the study; in the collection, analysis, or interpretation of data, in the writing of the manuscript, or in the decision to publish the results.»

20 · Conflicts of interest

Declared: «The authors declare no conflicts of interest. The funders had no role in the design of the study; in the collection, analysis, or interpretation of data, in the writing of the manuscript, or in the decision to publish the results.»

⚠️ This is the standard MDPI formula, and the second sentence speaks of «the funders» in the plural while the declared funder is a single body funding a single person. It does not change the substance; it is, however, the kind of pre-filled formula that makes a declaration less informative than it looks.

21 · What is missing against the reporting standard

Against STROBE (cross-sectional studies), with the caveat of field 13:

  • ⛔ No participant flow diagram (STROBE 13): how many opened the questionnaire, how many started it, how many were excluded for incomplete completion. That last number is declared to exist and is not printed.
  • ⛔ No measure of precision (STROBE 16a): no confidence interval on any percentage. On n = 53, a 95 % CI around 43.4 % would run roughly from 30 % to 58 % — an editorial calculation, to give the scale of the uncertainty, not a result of the article.
  • ⛔ Denominators not printed on at least one results series (health problems, field 15), and the admissibility of multiple answers not declared on at least one other.
  • ⛔ No analysis of the associations the article itself relates in its discussion (concrete and lameness; care frequency and housing): the authors declare this, which turns the omission into a declared choice rather than a hidden gap.
  • ⛔ No statement of adherence to a guideline, no registered protocol.
  • ⚠️ None of the items proper to an online survey is addressed (CHERRIES, outside the closed list): prevention of duplicate responses, partial completion, question order and wording, language of the instrument (field 1).
  • ✅ What is not missing, and it must be said: a dedicated, explicit and honest limitations section, declaring self-selection bias, self-reporting, the absence of diagnostic confirmation and the ageing of the data; the declaration of the use of an AI tool in the literature search; and the explicit invitation to read the results «in a descriptive rather than normative context». These are three things many more solid papers do not write.

23 · Valutazione a stelle

AxisScoreOne-line justification
A — Scientific quality★★☆☆☆Voluntary non-probabilistic survey with an unvalidated questionnaire, uncalculable response rate, no CIs and four denominators that do not add up; it recovers something for an honest limitations section and for inferential analyses done where the data supported them.
B — Clinical usefulness★★★☆☆It tells the veterinarian what to expect on arriving at a European farm — and above all that in four cases out of five foot care does not go through them.
C — Teaching value★★★★☆It is the textbook case for teaching the difference between declared practice and measured outcome, and for showing what turns up when four sums are redone.
D — Species relevance★★★★☆Entirely alpaca and European, but the unit of analysis is the keeper: it speaks of the species through an intermediary.

24 · Bottom line

24 · Bottom line

One can conclude that among 53 Hungarian alpaca keepers who answered an online questionnaire in the summer of 2023, reporting 266 animals in total, toenail trimming is carried out once a year by 43.4 %, twice a year by 30.2 %, every few months by 22.6 % and monthly by 1.9 %; that it is performed by specialists in 50.9 %, by the breeders themselves in 35.8 % and by veterinarians in 18.9 % of cases (with multiple answers allowed); that 24.5 % of farms use concrete flooring systems and 54.7 % straw with wood shavings; and that the authors hypothesise — without having analysed it and while declaring so — that concrete may increase the risk of lameness and injury if not properly managed.

One cannot conclude anything about the foot health of the animals, because no animal was examined; nor that one trimming frequency is better than another, because no outcome was measured; nor that lameness concerns 5 % of anything, because the denominator of that percentage is not printed in the article and is not 53.
