Integratori: pochi, scelti, e mai al buioSupplements: few, selected, and never in the dark

A supplement is a drug at a low dose. It is needed when something measured is missing — not for general caution, and not because the neighboring farm gives it.
The right question is not "which supplement do I give", it is "what is missing". These are two different questions, and the second has an answer that can be checked.
Quando serve davveroWhen it's really needed
Tre situazioni in cui un'integrazione ha senso:Three situations in which supplementation makes sense:
- il foraggio è povero di qualcosathe forage is poor in something, e lo si sa perché il fieno è stato analizzato;, and this is known because the hay was analyzed;
- l'animale ha un fabbisogno aumentatothe animal has an increased requirement — gravidanza avanzata, allattamento, crescita, vecchiaia;— advanced pregnancy, lactation, growth, old age;
- manca la lucelight is missing, nelle stalle e negli inverni lunghi delle valli, dove la sintesi cutanea della vitamina D non basta., in barns and in the long winters of the valleys, where cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D is not enough.
Outside of these cases, the supplement is an expense that adds a risk instead of removing one.
Il sovradosaggio non è teoricoOverdose is not theoretical
In the Camelid Research Studies series there is a fact sheet on calcinosis in an alpaca cria from vitamin D intoxication, with the clinical picture and the outcome. It is the most concrete reminder that can be given to anyone who thinks that «a bit more doesn't hurt».
The same applies to selenium, which is needed in minuscule amounts and is toxic just above that.
A mineral feed for sheep or cattle can contain copper in amounts that a camelid cannot clear. The accumulation is hepatic and silent: by the time it shows signs, the liver has already worked hard. Before buying a bucket of minerals, check the formulation, and if it is not stated for camelids, ask the veterinarian.
The ingredients are listed in decreasing order of quantity: what matters most is at the top.
The chemical form changes absorption. For zinc, chelated forms are more available than the oxide; for vitamin D, cholecalciferol (D3) is the form used in animals.
A product «for ruminants» is not a product for camelids. The digestive similarity is partial, and the difference regarding copper is exactly where one cannot afford to be wrong.
Le cose che circolano e non vanno fatteThings that circulate and should not be done
Garlic, which appears in many home remedies, contains compounds that damage red blood cells: it is not a tonic, it is a risk of anaemia. And generic multivitamins from the shop, formulated for horses or dogs, carry doses that for an alpaca are off the scale.
Come si controlla se sta funzionandoHow to check whether it is working
With blood, not with impressions. One hematochemical profile before and one a few months after tell you whether supplementation has shifted something; daily observation — appetite, feces, fleece quality, gait — tells you whether a problem has appeared in the meantime.
And a log is kept: product, dose, dates. Without it, after six months no one knows any longer what the animal is receiving, and the veterinarian who arrives has to start over from scratch.
Perché qui non ci sono dosiWhy there are no doses here
Why a sensible dose depends on the animal's weight, on what it already eats, and on what has been measured in its blood or in its hay. A number published on a web page knows none of these three things. Doses are written on a prescription, not in an article.

Every card states what the study measured, on how many animals, and what it did not demonstrate. If a source was read only in abstract, the card says so.
