Il riparo: asciutto, ventilato, con una via d'uscitaShelter: dry, ventilated, with a way out

A camelid enters a shelter only if it finds it acceptable. The three things that make it acceptable are less obvious than they seem.
Alpacas and llamas come from a cold, dry highland. They tolerate dry cold well and humidity poorly: rain that soaks the fleece down to the skin removes the insulation, and wind increases heat loss. In Italy the climate that puts them in difficulty is not that of January in the mountains — it is that of November in the lowlands, wet and windy, and that of July, hot and humid.
Le tre cose che contanoThe three things that matter
Copertura che scarichi l'acqua.A cover that drains water. A sloped roof, made of rigid material, firmly fixed. Light sheets that flap in the wind frighten the animals, which then no longer go in.
Ventilazione.Ventilation. A closed shelter retains moisture and ammonia, and in summer becomes the hottest spot in the field. A generous internal height helps: hot air rises and escapes.
Pavimento che dreni.Floor that drains. Coarse sand, fine gravel, or a grating. Standing urine and water is the most common cause of interdigital dermatitis and maceration. Bare concrete is cold in winter, hot in summer, and does not absorb.
La via d'uscitaThe way out
A detail that escapes those who design thinking of the climate and not of the animals: a shelter with a single narrow opening becomes a hierarchical trap. The dominant animal takes the entrance and the others are left outside in the rain. Due aperture, o una largaTwo openings, or one wide one, e il problema non si pone., and the problem does not arise.
- l'animale dominante, cerchiatothe dominant animal, circled
- il resto del gruppothe rest of the group
Two openings, or one wide one: with a single narrow entrance the dominant animal takes position there, and the others are left out in the rain.
Che cosa vedi. What you see. The same shelter seen from above, twice. On the left, a single narrow entrance: the dominant animal occupies it and the group is left outside. On the right, two openings: everyone gets in.
Perché.Why. A shelter with a single narrow opening becomes a hierarchical trap: the problem is the order of the group, not the weather.
For the same reason the area must be calculated on the whole group, not on the average: if they all fit only by standing pressed together, none of them will fit.
L'estate è la stagione difficileSummer is the difficult season
Un riparo estivo utile è prima di tuttoHeat, for an animal with that fleece and a poorly efficient sweating mechanism, is more dangerous than cold. A useful summer shelter is first of all ombra ventilataventilated shade: gli alberi funzionano meglio dei teli, perché lasciano passare l'aria.: trees work better than tarps, because they let air through.
- Nessun pavimento in cemento nelle zone di riposo estivo. No concrete flooring in summer resting areas.
- Ventilatori a bassa velocità nei ricoveri chiusi, dove c'è corrente.Low-speed fans in closed shelters, where there is electricity.
- I nebulizzatori solo con buona ventilazione: aumentare l'umidità senza ricambio d'aria peggiora le cose.Nebulizers only with good ventilation: increasing humidity without air exchange makes things worse.
Dove si metteWhere it goes
At the center of the grazing paddocks, if rotated: that way it stays accessible without moving it. Away from noisy roads. And at a point that does not become the bottom of a water collection area at the first serious rain — something you discover by watching the field during a storm, not on the map.
Come si capisce che funzionaHow to tell it is working
Why they use it. A shelter that stays empty while it rains is not a shelter: it is a structure. It is worth watching what the animals do during the first storm and adjusting accordingly, instead of assuming the problem is theirs.

Every card states what the study measured, on how many animals, and what it did not demonstrate. If a source was read only in abstract, the card says so.
