Il pascolo si cura facendolo riposarePasture is managed by letting it rest

Rotation is not a luxury for large farms. It is the least costly way to reduce parasitic pressure, and in many cases it works better than one more antiparasitic.
Keeping the animals always on the same pasture is convenient and produces two effects that add up: the grass is consumed where it is grazed and stays tall where the feces are, and nematode larvae accumulate exactly on the ground that the animals keep walking on.
The area is divided into three or four sectors with movable fencing and the group is moved, leaving each sector at rest for weeks. How long depends on the climate: infective larvae survive for a long time in damp, cool grass, much less in dry or frozen conditions.
In the rainy areas of northern Italy and the alpine valleys, a rest of a few weeks does little good: one needs to think in terms of months. In hot, dry areas in summer, the sun does much of the work.
- il settore in uso: il gruppo bruca e calpestathe sector in use: the group grazes and tramples
- i settori a riposo, dove l'erba ricrescethe resting sectors, where the grass grows back
The group moves on and the pasture rests: each sector is left alone for weeks, and for months where the climate is humid.
Che cosa vedi. What you see. The field seen from above, divided into four sectors. The group is in sector 1, the other three are resting; the solid arrow shows where the group goes next.
Perché.Why. Parasite larvae accumulate in ground that the animals keep trampling. A sector left alone loses many of them, even more in dry weather or frost.
Raccogliere le feci è la mossa più sottovalutataCollecting feces is the most underrated move
In small pastures — the real ones, belonging to those with four or six animals — rotation alone is not enough, because there is not enough land to leave to rest. There, regular collection of droppings does more than anything else: camelids defecate in fixed spots, which makes the work much faster than with other species.
La resistenza agli antiparassitari è già quiAntiparasitic resistance is already here
Nella collana di Camelid Research Studies c'è una scheda su frequenze elevate di alleli di resistenza ai benzimidazoli inDeworming all animals on a fixed calendar, two or three times a year, is the practice that has selected for resistant parasites. In the Camelid Research Studies series there is a paper on high frequencies of benzimidazole resistance alleles in Haemonchus contortusHaemonchus contortus nei camelidi, e una rassegna sull'anemia dain camelids, and a review on anemia due to HaemonchusHaemonchus nei camelidi sudamericani.in South American camelids.
There is also a fact sheet on the relationship between body condition score, FAMACHA score, and parasitological parameters, which is the type of tool that a breeder can learn to use with their own veterinarian.
L'erba giusta e l'erba sbagliataThe right grass and the wrong grass
Camelids do well on mixed pastures: fescue, timothy, ryegrass together with other species. Endophyte-infected ryegrass monocultures can cause neurological disorders, and turf-grass mixes are not forage.
Land that stays waterlogged deserves separate attention: standing water hosts the snails that act as intermediate host for liver flukes, and chronic mud produces lameness and maceration dermatitis. If part of the field is always wet, it is fenced off.
Le cose che si fanno una volta e valgono anniThings done once that last for years
Have someone who can identify them point out the toxic plants present on your own land.
Position the shelter and water so that they remain accessible from multiple sections when rotating.
Do not fertilize with fresh manure on pastures in use.
Estimating how many animals one's land can actually support, instead of starting from how many one would like: overstocking is the upstream cause of almost all pasture problems.
